Thank you for this 🙏 I noticed after expanding the photo I'm working with (similar to the rose photo you used), it created a bunch of white behind the image as if there's very tiny gaps between each colors/paths that AI created when expanding the image trace. Any suggestions for that or is that normal?
Great video thanks. Do you have a link to your video that shows you completing the XSite logo? from Drawing the fonts to sending the files (types) to your client? Im having issues with Cutters getting pixilated lines and cutting every pixel angle. UGG. Thanks in advance.
Yes, here's an article showing how: redstapler.co/convert-svg-to-png-photoshop/ I wouldn't do it this way though - you have much less control and Photoshop has to guess where you want anchor points.
I can't seem to make the step from having created all the outline points of my drawing and converting the color within the strokes from white to color. I did go toColor and select RGB. The tiny image of shape selected in the layers shows it in the color I chose, but in the big picture it remains white. Thanks for getting me farther than I ever have gotten before!
Thanks for the tutorial! What is the proper way to save or export your file to make it a vector file? I always get confused if only EPS, SVG, and AI are vector file formats or what the difference is between them. Are PDFs vector file formats??
It all depends on how you need to use the file, but in most cases I would just use AI. EPS is outdated and not really used anymore, except on older versions of the software. SVG is used for web and cutting machines. Yes, PDFs can be vector too!
Great tutorial. Thank you for taking the time to explain it clearly and thoroughly! It just shows me that Illustrator's Image Trace function is really not as good as tracing by hand with the pen tool. As designers, we all learned that the cleanest curves were made with the least number of points. Illustrator's Image Trace uses way too many points to make curves that don't look very good. I trace with the pen tool. The curves are clean, it's good practice for my pen tool skills and doesn't take that long to make a sharp image that's right forever after that.
Thank you! Yes, it's true that the pen tool is usually better. But in my opinion, if you can have someone examine one tracing made with the pen tool, and one made with image trace, and they can't tell them apart, there really is no reason to use the pen tool. The time it takes just isn't worth it to get nearly the exact result (I'm talking about image tracing a very high res, clean image, which gives a very good image trace outcome).
I work on a software wich require a photo bmp 256 and vectoriel so i have to go to adobe to vectorize the photo for example i have to vectorize the face of human but the image change because i have to work on 5 colours maximum and the original photos of faces contains much of colours so when i vectorize it it go far from the reality and after that i have to save it us bmp 256 it changes again. What can i do please
Generally speaking, realistic faces are very hard to rasterize, especially in 5 colors. I'm not sure why you would need to vectorize a face (unless you want to cartoonize it; in that case, I would draw it with the pen tool, not image trace). Can you leave it as a raster image (JPG, PNG)?
Thank you for a very helpful tutorial, Anne - I learned a lot! I wonder: Could you have avoided the B&W→RGB protocol (~7:37, ~7:53) with the rose image if you had used either the Auto-Color or High Color options in the Image Trace panel (2:58), rather than the B&W option?
Yes, that's probably the best way to go about it - start out with one of the color presets, and then change # of colors to the lowest possible, 2. That way you don't have to worry about the grayscale aspect, but you also don't have tons of colors to work with/reduce! Thank you - I hadn't thought of doing it that way!
Thank you I’ve been searching for an easy to follow video and finally came across your tutorials, I’m a beginner and just purchased Adobe illustrator you’ve really helped me. 😊👍

Hello, I love this video. It's helped a lot. One thing am having trouble with is spaces like the stem of the flower. Around 8:30 - 9:10 minute mark. I have many open places on my doodles. If you are looking for another video to make, please make one to explain how to add a shape in the stem. I have a lot of white inner spaces that connect to the white background.
Thank you! I might do one with several examples...although I don't know how to explain it better than what I did in this video. Maybe a lot of different ones will help. :)
Maybe more examples. I can send you some of my 'doodles' they all have the same problem. Some areas are white but the river of white flows into the background. When I make the small area with the pencil tool I do get that far and then I make the area white, but it makes all the black lines transparent? I am also crashing illustrator every time I do this. UGH.
I know this video maybe a bit older but I wanted to know if you have any videos explain how to fix the little imperfections that may happen like it did on the fox image. Those little imperfections can be a pain if trying to cut the image on a cricut. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you

I've been trying to place a gold gradient with text onto a cube using the perspective tool, but it's just not happening. It won't even move the image if its in perspective, even after trace image etc... this is a problem I've been trying to solve for almost three months. Any ideas?
I do have a video about that tool: ruclips.net/video/IgFuzvIF6rA/видео.html but it's hard to know the problem without seeing the design itself. You can add your question with images in our FB group if you'd like: facebook.com/groups/adobeillustratorusershelp
The points and paths that are created are the same, but Trace will kind of 'guess' where to put them, and with the pen tool, you are precisely placing each path and point. It takes much longer than tracing, but the result is usually much nicer!
Thanks for uploading this video. Any suggestion on how to trace quickly a digital photo of a chair to put in a user manual? The vector image should be just the outline of the product.
Unfortunately, that's not really possible with Illustrator's capabilities. The vector drawings you see in user manuals are drawn by hand, usually with the pen tool.
Hey, Can anyone recommend a few schools to get a certification in graphic design? I don't want to go to a college to take classes of a subject that I will never use. All I want is graphic design. Thanks
You could do Udemy courses, if they're highly rated, that's a pretty good indication they are great classes! As far as an actual certification, I don't think this would help too much to get a job anyway. The big companies are looking for great work (portfolio) + a 4-year degree in an accredited university/college. The small companies are just looking for great work (portfolio). They don't care about whether you have a degree (generally speaking) or certification.
Mine doesn't show little preset icons under the image trace and when I open my the image trace and under preset i don't have the high fidelity photo option available can you pleas help me out..thank you very much.
QUESTION... I'm using Illustrator CS5. I've noticed when vectoring JPGs, the Auto Trace option happens to "double stroke" the image. So before I run the image on my vinyl plotter, I have to delete the top line art, otherwise the plotter will trace the image twice. Is there a way to disable that feature? It can get annoying when I have an intricate image and I have to go over all of it and remove the double-trace. Thanks
I'm thinking what you're seeing is the white part meeting the black (or other color). You can choose Ignore White in settings - that should remove the problem. If you mean where two colors meet, say black and yellow, this would be normal behavior for Illustrator - they would abut in that case, giving the appearance of a 'double stroke'. If you want me to take a look at your file, you can send to howtographicdesigner@gmail.com
So what are the problems with this kind of vectoring (I think that is the right word). Does it cause any problems in Adobe Animate or in After Effects ?
No, it's just an automated way of doing what you would normally do yourself with the pen tool. The main problem I see is when people try to image trace a photograph or a low-res image. The result is pretty terrible. You want to shoot for smooth, beautiful lines, and sometimes you just can't achieve that with Image Trace.
@@GDHT I am asking this because Flash had been notorious in not handling a lot of points. It used to crash. I do not know if they had fixed that issue or if After Effects has that problem. I am asking this because I do not know should I invest a lot of hours in vectoring by hand or just use this method. Is vectoring by hand even a must have skill today?
@@maxmagnus777 Oh ok, I'm not sure about the points in Flash. I'm pretty sure Flash is considered 'dead' these days. The less points, the better, but Image Trace has been getting better about not adding so many. Vectoring by hand is absolutely a necessary skill today! My process is: start off with Image Trace, which just takes a few seconds. If it doesn't look good or is adding too many points, even after adjusting settings, scrap it and build by hand. :)
@@GDHT I was thinking about Adobe Animate. I used the name Flash as synonymous (my bad). So After using Trace method do you fix it by hand. I mean remove points redraw some curves? Is it a method that you use and if it works works and if it doesn't do it by hand?
@@maxmagnus777 Oh ok, I see. If the trace method works pretty well, sometimes I'll fix by hand. Yes, generally, if it works I'll use it, and if it doesn't I do it by hand.
hello , could you make it more clear how to select the white area then select different groups and color them? idk what im doing wrong but i try to select it and it doesnt work
@@jimin4life797 First you'll need to Expand the image trace. Then get your direct selection tool (hit a on your keyboard to select that), click on the white outer area, and delete it. Then with that same tool, you can select different pieces and color them.
Hi, I m new to AI and I have scanned PDF ( scan drawing via printer scanner) and want to covert in to SVG file that I can cut via Cricut machine using cricut design software. I loaded PDF in AI 2024 and I press Ctrl +Y & see blank page .I heard about image trace but not sure how to use to adjust diff. factors to maintain the accuracy of drawing (for card making) and keep some line (dotted) in diff layer so I can change in Cricut design space software for score vs cutting.
@@GDHT thank you for reply and time. 1) during image trace process can I put diff. drawing part into diff layer instead of one single unit & also adjust or change the drawing? 2) other than image trace is there any option?
You're welcome! 1) You can do that after the image trace part...basically it will become a regular, full editable vector after the image trace. 2) You can trace the design with your pen tool if Image Trace isn't working well.
Hi, what is the proper size of the raster image when I convert to svg? for example, the 1000px width image is a perfect size for the high resolution screen, then should I convert 1000px width raster image or 500px sort of width raster image to SVG?
Generally speaking, a large file is better than a small one. So if you have access to a larger image, use that one - it'll give a cleaner conversion. Don't increase the size of a small image to a large one, though. That won't help - you'll get the same result, if that makes sense.

Update: I've just realized the Pixel Preview (View) was checked, for last couple of days! 😳 Now everything is sharp 😊
That's that out of the way, now it's back to getting rid of the infill's@@GDHT
Yes, they can! Here's my video on making your own brush; hopefully it'll apply somewhat to what you're looking for: ruclips.net/video/nVwvw30LE2w/видео.html
Thank you for such a great and thorough video. I knew about image trace but didn’t know about the menu and different tracing options.
Thank you so much - I'm glad it was helpful!
I was in need of a tutorial like this urgently and your video came in at the right time. Thank you so much.
You're welcome!! I'm so glad it helped!
Thank you for this 🙏 I noticed after expanding the photo I'm working with (similar to the rose photo you used), it created a bunch of white behind the image as if there's very tiny gaps between each colors/paths that AI created when expanding the image trace. Any suggestions for that or is that normal?
I think this is normal for Illustrator. If you export as a jpg, are you still seeing them?
I’ve used image trace a lot, I never knew how to solve the grayscale issue thanks!
You're welcome! :)
I am new to Illustrator, and you have explained it very well. Thanks a million...
You're welcome 😊 I'm so happy the video helped you!
Thank you so much. I've been having trouble vectoring images with over 10 colors. U showed the way! So thankful
Awesome - I'm so glad I could help!
Thanks so much !! Haha been using illustrator for lines in architecture for 4 years just learned this
You're welcome! If you're making lines for architecture, it would probably need to be more precise than this, so that makes sense!
Great video thanks. Do you have a link to your video that shows you completing the XSite logo? from Drawing the fonts to sending the files (types) to your client? Im having issues with Cutters getting pixilated lines and cutting every pixel angle. UGG. Thanks in advance.
I didn't actually redraw that one, but I do have another video that shows a similar process: ruclips.net/video/d7z14tgWrfE/видео.html
omg thank you. i was missing the window dropdown step. been a long time
You're welcome!! :)
This is incredibly helpful! Thank you. A novice like myself was able to follow the instructions and get the results I wanted.
Thank you so much! I'm glad it was helpful!
This was actually helpful been a while since I used illustrator glad to be getting back into it
Thank you!
That's exactly what I need right now. Can one create high-quality SVG files in Photoshop just like the ones in Illustrator?
Yes, here's an article showing how: redstapler.co/convert-svg-to-png-photoshop/ I wouldn't do it this way though - you have much less control and Photoshop has to guess where you want anchor points.
@@GDHT Thank you Anne, I really appreciate it.
You're welcome!
You'll need to cut and paste in front, then recolor that. Or, you can also use the Paint Bucket tool.
Why do I get rough edges and blotted tiny colors around the egdes? can you make a tutorial for it? Will be a big help ♥
It sounds like you either have a low-res image, or you have too many colors in your color settings.
Hi..this is great work, may I ask you to make a video how to create a collaborative poster in Adobe illustrator
Thank you! Unfortunately I don't use the collaboration tools Adobe offers, so I don't actually know how to use them.
Excellent tutorial! I will be following you. Thanks so much :)
Thank you so much - I appreciate that!
You are a genius. You saved my time and i have no words to thank for this solution. Much merrits 🙏🙏🙏🙏❤❤❤❤❤
You're welcome 😊! I'm so happy it helped!
Awww thank you so much!!!
This works. Recommended to try this out. Thanks a lot for your help
You're welcome!!
Al fin alguien explico de buena manera la conversión de un PNG (transparencia) a vector. Todos explicaban la conversión de PNG (con fondo) a vector ...omg
¡Muchas gracias!
i never see something beautiful and helpful like your tutorials thanks a lot
Thank you! I appreciate your comments!
Thank you so much for this tutorial. It was just simple an understandable. i've Learnt so much
You're welcome...and thank you!!
UGH.
Feel free to send a few over! howtographicdesigner@gmail.com
I know this video maybe a bit older but I wanted to know if you have any videos explain how to fix the little imperfections that may happen like it did on the fox image. Those little imperfections can be a pain if trying to cut the image on a cricut. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you
You can use the Smooth tool to smooth out any rough areas.
Hi. Great video. Thank you for sharing. May i please make a request? I would like to see how and what the finial image would look like in order to engrave a picture with a laser engraver. If possible maybe like a check list of things that need to be done before engraving an image onto a item. I apologize that I don’t know the correct terminology to frame the question. Also, is it possible to show how we can add more fonts to AI? Thank you in advance.
I've never done laser engraving, so I don't think I would be much help there. But I can show how to add fonts to AI - I'll add it to the list. Thank you for the suggestions!
Thank you for this tutorial. It really helped me with the conversion process. The last time I converted an image to vector I was still using Adobe Streamline!!! LOL Thanks again. :)
Ugh, Streamline was the WORST!! I feel like Image Trace is so much better.
It was tough to work with, but there really wasn't any other options out there at the time (that I knew of). There was a learning curve for me when I tried to use Image Trace until I came across your video!!! Now I am a happy camper and all worked out great with my project!!! Thanks again. :)@@GDHT
Yes, I remember it being pretty much the only option. Thank you so much - I'm glad the video helped!
Thank you so much! I was trying to learn a few different things in Illustrator since I was using it for the first time and this helped a lot!
You're welcome! :) Glad I could help!
I love how you teach. will this work even with a texture inside the clip art?
Thank you so much! It definitely won't work as well, but give it a try and let us know!
Your illustrator interface is so awesome how do I get that on mine 🤯
Do you mean just the 'light' version?
super good tutorial really easy to follow, thank you very much
Thank you so much!!
i am getting a bit ambiguous, actual i wanna ask that if using trace and the pen tool for tracing any image kinda works the same right?
Thx so much 🙏 you are an angel. I needed this tutorial so desperately. May you always have good days. Thanks again
Wow, thank you! I really appreciate your kind words!!
Hi Anne, thank you so much for this video, full of information based on your experiences! It helped me a lot ❤❤
I'm so glad it was helpful! And thank you so much!
Thank you for this wonderful tutorial. Great job!
You're welcome...and thank you!
Thanks. Would have liked to see the high resolution photo of the colored rose be cleaned up a bit though - reducing the number of paths, for example.
Maybe in a future video - thanks for the suggestion!
You are such a great teacher! Great video!
Thank you so much! ♥️♥️♥️
Mine doesn't show little preset icons under the image trace and when I open my the image trace and under preset i don't have the high fidelity photo option available can you pleas help me out..thank you very much.
What version of illustrator are you on?
Thankkkk u so much
..do u have any video of hair illustratorn where u explain plzzz make new maybbb😩
I don't have a hair tutorial yet! Sorry about that!
@@GDHT can u make one soon plz
@@ennatim479 I'll see if it is something I can do! It will probably be in a month or more, though.
Thank you so much. Very easy to listen to and you didn't go crazy fast. Explained things very well.
Thank you so much - I'm glad it was helpful!
@@GDHT Thanks for the response. I'm not sure I completely understand. I'll send you an image so you can see for yourself.
@@GDHT Just sent you an e-mail. Thank you.
For anyone else with this issue: we determined this must be a CS5 issue (image trace behaves differently in more recent versions of Illustrator).
God bless you my sister! Thank you so much for this wonderful information.
You're welcome!! And thank you!!
Thank you soo much for this I was struggling with a graphic design assignment 💗
You're welcome! Glad it was helpful!
How did you do a paste "infront" for the stem, when i do it the stem curve thats pasted does not comeup in the same place
Ctrl F or CMD F :)
hello , could you make it more clear how to select the white area then select different groups and color them? idk what im doing wrong but i try to select it and it doesnt work
Sure, but it's a little hard to tell what you're having trouble with. What min/sec in the video is giving you issues?
omg thank you so much 😭 its between 7:02-7:04
@@jimin4life797 First you'll need to Expand the image trace.
This video should help with that! Although, the dotted line might not work too well with image trace.
@@GDHT thank you
You're welcome!
Thank you! Love the detailed explanations and examples!
You're welcome! I'm so glad you enjoyed it!!
