For graphic design - I've learned technical things from school, more creative things from videos, quality from work, and efficiency from myself. A little of everything from everything too. Kinda cool now that you make me think about it.
Your are one of the best teachers in the Illustration and Design world to me. Thank you for all your great work. I nearly inhale all of your videos, starting out Inkscape and Gimp and now kind of professional as I study graphic design, Adobe lessons of you. Wow. Really. You are great and your explanations are perfect for studying.
Some extra tips: To drag the canvas around, use the *_SCROLL WHEEL BUTTON_* For Pen, press *_P_* For Ellipse, press *_L_* For a quick, manual selection Pathfinder, press *_SHIFT+M_* (you must already have your shapes pre-selected with Shift+click) For the Curve tool, to manually create curves from straight lines, press *_SHIFT+C_* To mirror+rotate+changing the center point of shapes, press *_O_*
I’ve struggled to get my head around imaging tracing correctly or how I want it to trace in my head, and within 5mins watching your video I’ve finally cracked it! Thanks for straight forward easily explained video!
I think this is a the best tutorial that I found for tracing Images and have a basic knowelage, all is explained and that a good strat for some one who tries Illustrator first time
Thank you for your help, this days it's difficult to come by people like you, i want you to know that my heart will never stop appreciating your generosity..
thanks for this! I've written down my notes for easy reference image trace feature window > img trace select logo check preview in dialog box mode > black and white or color(takes longer) uncheck preview when done click trace button when happy object > expand > ok object > ungroup - do this twice delete the white stuff
normally i dont give reviews but maam youre amazing like i tried 2 videos on 2020 and one on 2022 but it wont work but i saw yr video today and it worked as being both content creators i respect your hard work and keep it up
In this particular case you could just trace a straight line on the middle of logo. Making only one side, then reflecting it on vertical and creating the another side. It's twice faster.
Thank you, you have no idea how unintuitive it is to be able to get an auto trace to not be a filled polygon because of the expand button. I really appreciate this video!
uhm, how do I express my gratefulness... uh... maybe this will put it on point: I LOVE YOU!? ♥ Your voice is super nice and soothing, the way you explain things is absolutely easy to understand and what can I say? I AM IN LOVE!! Big THANK YOU to you, Sir.
You are wonderful! I've been trying to figure out how to turn a logo I created on Canva into a Vector for months now. Thank you so so much for this video! You absolutely just made my year!
Thank you so much this video was SUPER helpful! I had asked a coworker to send a logo for merchandise and they sent a super low resolution jpg. This makes my life 1000 times easier
How do I save a copy of my vectorized PNG after using the image tracer (which worked great), and in what format so I can use it without having to open a SVG copy in Firefox, or Illustrator ESP file?
Im here for the same qouestion - can I open this vecot file only in Ai? Or this is like a "basic'' (tamplate) and I can resize the vecor file in Ai and save as pgn file in any kind of size I want and the file dont lose the quality? Is it works like that?
A 2nd shortcut for this logo is to notice the symmetry in the left & right hemispheres. This would cut the tracing time in half. Copy. Transform/Reflect. Position/Join. Also, this would insure consistancy.
This was absolutely brilliant, but it got to the end and I know nothing about illustrator, so now I need to figure out how to resize the canvas to be the same size as the image was originally, and how to save it and alls sorts 😅
Hi I am new to your channel thank you vey much for a good tutorial. could you tell me if i am to draw a pine cone, after drawing it how can i add different tones in it? will appreciate ur reply
Your instructions were brilliantly simple to follow. Worked on the first try (which isn't always the case with youtube instructors 😅). Thank you for sharing your skills.
Thank you for the great tutorial ! May I ask you why we need to ungroup twice please ? I have tried to ungroup a simple logo and sometimes it doesn't ungroup or group well.... Not too sure why. Thank you !
hey Nick, i found this tutorial very helpful since i'm a beginer with Adobe Illustrator, i pretty much got almost eveything around the image trace thing .. what i didn't get is around the " ungroup twice " thing after automatic trace .... i guess that's about seperating the traced area from it's background ... but why twice ? i'd be grateful if you could clear that up for me . thanks
We need to ungroup twice just to be sure that everything is ungrouped. As sometimes some vectors arent ungrouped, so just to be on the safe side yk. Hope it helps, have a good day :)
How to design in larger sizes save it in a smaller size so it won’t take up hard drive space and store it without lose the resolution and printed it or send it to a printer to be printed in a larger size without compromising to resolution. What size to create in as a standard format with the ability to increase it to a large size such as 50x50 or 96x70.
It is really interesting how it can be traced quite easily. I wish to know if there is a way how to trace half the image and then reflect it, since it is symmetrical shape. Thanks
Hey George, yes, there is a way to trace half and then reflect it. Within Illustrator, click on the half of the object that you made and then right click, select Transform, Reflect, select Vertical, Angle should be 90 degrees, and then hit the Copy button at the very bottom. If you need to join both halves, first move them together so that they're next to each other, then select both, go to the Pathfinder Palette (Window, Pathfinder), then click on the Unite button. The two halves will now become one object. That's it! I know it seems like a lot, but if you keep doing it, it'll be second nature, like everything else. Hope this helps! Cheers!
This has just saved me from insanity, why Trace wasn't working I've just realized the Pixel Preview (View) was checked, for last couple of days! 😳 Now everything is sharp 😊 Tip; The curvature tool: you can drag around the anchor points with same tool, really good
can i use auto trace and manual trace for one pic at the same time. For example, use auto trace to trace the lines first, then for the line that auto trace that cannot trace , I finish it with manual trace?
I'm getting the Academy after watching this video. This video actually made a whole lot of sense and I was actually able to see myself move forward as compared to other videos that just had me scratching my head wondering what to to next even after seeing them explain it. So this is a no brainer for me. Love the simplicity. Thank you for this awesome tutorial. Looking forward to join your academy.
Many thanks!! Do you have any video on how to edit emf file in Illustrator? I export some graphs from Stata, but I don't know how to edit them. Thanks!
Hi, i am absolute beginner and one question, after you do all the manual or the first method, you just continue with Save as and pick the SVG format upon the Save operation or you need to disconnect the vectored and recolored picture from the original one and delete the original one before? Many thanks, great video!!!
This has taught me more than what my professor in college is teaching me right now, I highly appreciate this!
For graphic design - I've learned technical things from school, more creative things from videos, quality from work, and efficiency from myself. A little of everything from everything too. Kinda cool now that you make me think about it.
Correct! In my college they didn't taught me this. Now i required this
word

I need to do this every 90 days or so and I re-watch this tutorial. At some point it'll sink in but until then, I'll keep watching!
Hey, that's what it's here for. Our external brains at work.
Best tutorial I've ever seen. You're actually a teacher.

Can you tell me how to scale
How to make a selection from a pentools shape?

Probably one of the most useful videos in my design career. I cannot thank you enough
Your are one of the best teachers in the Illustration and Design world to me. Excellent thanks!
Blakey Don't stop making soft. I wished I started as early as you. You have a lot of years to learn!
So easy to understand and follow, one of the most comprehensive teachers of these tools ive come across
You did an excellent job explaining the difference between these two approaches. Thank you!
GREAT THUMBNAIL. Just perfectly illustrative, yet clever.
I think this is a the best tutorial that I found for tracing Images and have a basic knowelage, all is explained and that a good strat for some one who tries Illustrator first time

thanks for this! I've written down my notes for easy reference
image trace feature
window > img trace
select logo
check preview in dialog box
mode > black and white or color(takes longer)
uncheck preview when done
click trace button when happy
object > expand > ok
object > ungroup - do this twice
delete the white stuff

Making only one side, then reflecting it on vertical and creating the another side.
It's twice faster.
The starbucks logo istn't perfectiy symmetrical though. I would however, provide a great base to adjust and probably make it faster either way
As a newbie kindly asked:
How to so?
Getting a line in the middle and make a "copy" to the other side?
the only video that was and informative for those that already have the basic knowledge THANK YOU!!
Thank you, you have no idea how unintuitive it is to be able to get an auto trace to not be a filled polygon because of the expand button. I really appreciate this video!

THANK YOU! I was struggling and couldnt figure out how to take out the white background for the longest time!
You are wonderful! I've been trying to figure out how to turn a logo I created on Canva into a Vector for months now. Thank you so so much for this video! You absolutely just made my year!
Same here! And it's a video from 2020 but it is the most helpful! Thanks a lot ;)
Very calm and easy to understand, easy to digest from a pedagogical aspect.
Thank you so much this video was SUPER helpful! I had asked a coworker to send a logo for merchandise and they sent a super low resolution jpg. This makes my life 1000 times easier
FINALLY, someone demonstrates it quickly and clearly. Thank you!
You are awesome! I was able to follow along and convert my png to vector. Yours is the best tutorial out there! Thank you!
How do I save a copy of my vectorized PNG after using the image tracer (which worked great), and in what format so I can use it without having to open a SVG copy in Firefox, or Illustrator ESP file?
I have the same question

Gee, I might actually be able to learn Illustrator with your videos. Thanks so much for your clear instructions.
Not to overstate things but you just changed my life
Wow the most informative illustrator video I've ever watched THANK YOU

Yes, trace one side, copy, paste and flip horizontal
it didnt look perfectly symmetrical to me
Yes, her eyes are not the same, and the shadow on her nose

can i use auto trace and manual trace for one pic at the same time. For example, use auto trace to trace the lines first, then for the line that auto trace that cannot trace , I finish it with manual trace?
Yeah there's no reason you can't do that.
Do auto trace on layer two. Manual on layer three then when you're happy merge layers.
