Exactly, usually no one goes to this place in winter, they were lucky to meet locals that happened to drink vodka and eat shashlyk there with a proper vehicle for this road. If he didn't stuck at that place he would stuck in another for sure and there would be no people around, lucky man. The road gets really bad further, you need a 4wd vehicle like the locals had.

This video was a hell of a comeback. Not even CNN would give two shits about showing this place, so Bald is doing something genuinely important I feel even if he doesn't know it - if not for our entertainment watching a British man stumble around the USSR and do crazy things but also for the people that live in these places to get some worldwide exposure. We rather not talk to each other fearing that person may be there to harm you. In this video, it's the complete opposite. They are not poor in the way you understand. The Czech Republic once built a complex with the latest things very nice apartments for the Roma Senti gypsies, they're ethnically from Rajasthan in India, but most of them live strange lives on the street for whatever reason and in caravans and under bridges and in crime. That's not me exaggerating that's the truth fact. They will give birth to a bunch of children in order to have more of them begging. I was once driving somewhere in Europe I don't remember where and suddenly I'm getting off the highway ramp at a pretty high speed there's a little baby in the middle of the f****** road. So I break hard barely avoid running it over and the moment I stopped all of a sudden like Invaders in a Roman movie, I'm swarmed by maybe 50 of these Romani gypsies who demand I pay them otherwise they're not going to move to let me through. So me being an idiot I go to pay them, when right behind me some locals witness this, and this large Eastern European man starts swearing and yelling at them and they storm off dispersed like they had seen a vampire or something. It looked to me like the locals were more lenient with them then we would be in canada. If this happen in Canada that those parents would be in jail for child endangerment in hours

I travelled to Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan in 2019, mostly touristy places of course. Before I went, for many years, I was very interested in those exclaves and did many internet research regarding them. All the internet sources say "avoid them" , so I didn't even think about putting them on my list. Surprised and also very happy to see you take us to them. Although being former soviet countries, I can see the progress made by them. The behavior of the border guard in this film matches my experience with authorities in those two countries. They generally still follow the rules, and will give you a reasonable explanation (at least that is what happened to me). Small bribes can still help to make things easier (our local driver did that very occasionally), but they do not openly ask for that, which I think is a good step toward. Thanks for this again.

Nice to see Alina again. When I was in Kyrgyzstan about 15 years (or so) ago, I visited Osh and was able to fly there from Bishkek. Seems like a much easier way to go than by car in the middle of winter! There's a world of difference between Bishkek (northern Kyrgyzstan) and Osh (southern Kyrgyzstan), so if you travel to Kyrgyzstan you should be sure to travel to both places. The people seem very friendly. One of the taxi drivers in Osh invited us over to his homestead for tea to meet his family and see his small farm. The residential architecture in Osh seems more "compound oriented" with a walled property inside which are several buildings around the perimeter where different generations of the family live. Where I stayed, the middle courtyard was covered and shaded with grape vines (suspended overhead by wires around which the grape vines were trained) and there were several pomegranate trees. In general, the south is much more Muslim feeling where as Bishkek seems more Russian feeling.

@@RobertowNL I traveled with a couple of friends, one who was a native Kirghiz who spoke Kirghiz, Russian and English (and Korean and Chinese (Putonghua)) and another American friend who spoke Russian and English. I had a little Russian in high school, but not enough to be considered "survival Russian". Most of that was buried under my survival Chinese, so usually my best "real time" Russian is a mix of Russian and Chinese words. It was best that I not even try! In Bishkek, you can usually find someone who speaks English (especially those people who look less than 30 yo).

@@SrinivashM29 Russian is recommended; but if just visiting Bishkek, you can usually find someone who speaks English. For more info see my reply to RobertNL above.

I love this evolution in your format. It’s great to see the research, history and B-roll. It feels much more polished than randomly walking about in hopes of finding interesting conversation with reluctant locals. There’s still a bit of that to keep things interesting, but the extra history about the region adds context. I hope to see more of these types of videos and more polish as you continue to evolve.

Meh... I liked the old videos more. This video is still grade A content but we all have preferences I guess.
