    I'm from Perm and live near that bus station. I'm very pleased that Bald visited us and walked along the streets that I walk every day. I always thought our bus station is terrible, but Baldy said it's awesome. It makes me look at things around with a new look.

    My grandfather Vytautas Cekanavicius spend 5 years in gulag in Belarus in Babruysk. After all that terrible experience of hard work, hunger he was released and walk on he's own feet all 500 km back home to Lithuania. He was starving all that trip stopping in some houses asking for a piece of bread. He died 1997 age 75 in hes own bed at home. I proud him very much.

      "GULag" is the main administration of the camp's network. Nowadays FSIN's main office is still situated in the same house, in the same building as it was before. The same things are in action yet no one cries about "modern «goolag»". Because there's no paid money for those cries.
      If you fear that, then you are a moron. I just state that. There's enough of your kind people here without you - do not accompany them.

      totally agree. The collaborators haven't got much to say that's interesting and they don't add much at all, content-wise. Alinka is cute, but that only goes so far. Baldy's commentary carries the whole show, even on excursions where nothing really happens.

    I love how this guy SEEKS adventure. He well knows that "tourist Europe", from Kerry Ireland to Perm Russia, is closed on Mondays, but he goes to an out-of-the-way site anyway, knowing he'll have to find a place to sleep somewhere, meet people, etc. It's why I love the channel.     You have made my wife very happy as she has got to see where her grandparents were taken when they were removed from the Polish border. Fortunately they survived and eventually made their way to the UK via Africa.

      Same story for my grandfather, he was taken from East Poland, then post gulag to Iran and then Halifax. Its amazing what these people survived

      @@erichamilton5932 East Poland then, was actually part of Belarus now. My great grandfather was a volunteer police officer, so the communists took him to a police station, put him in a soundproof room and shot him. This was part of the Katyn massacre.

If you look, you see it every where. And to think that a lot of history wasn’t written down or recorded in any way… scary stuff

    It was interesting to watch. Thank you for travelling to this part of the world. My both great grandparents lost their lifes in Gulag ( Altai Krai ). Nobody knows where their graves are. In my country we have this voluntary mission to go to places where lithuanians back in the day were sent to the concentration camps. Volunteers try to find places like these, tidy and clean all these massive graveyards, remember people and their stories left behind...

    I am always amazed by how open Russian are to personal questions. You ask a random lady about her opinion on a former president, and she gladly tells you all about her life in college and so on. They always seem eager to have a nice chat with a complete stranger.

    I was at that very gulag a couple of months ago when I made a short video about it as well, it was cool to see the same places that I've visited from your perspective! That very same bus stop, those buildings...good stuff on walking that path from the main road to the gulag camp, it definitely was NOT just a couple of kilometres!

    I know there are countless posts saying great things, but this man has changed my view of the world and improved my life more than anyone on YT by far. He doesn't just go to the most famous tourists sites (he does some of that and I am glad for it too). But this video perfectly shows how he often ends up in the most random, generic towns meeting the most ordinary people. This is real travel. Going to the Kremlin honestly tells me little about life in russia. Going to a small town and staying in an average hotel and hanging out with local people and showing food available- those things honestly DO help me understand what life is like there. Thank you.

    As someone who is from Russian descent and can speak/read the language, I really appreciate this documentary/vlog. It truly shows how the Russian people are friendly, accommodating, and welcoming. They always want to show the outside world what's really going on and want to help you along your journey. Besides all of the politics and hardships they face, they truly want the best for themselves and everyone around them. I only really visited Russia while I was 5, but my mother was from that background. Always hard working, diligent, intelligent, and fun! Russians really know how to take advantage of their surroundings, make fun of it and have a great time. You really enlightened me on my understanding of Russia as a descendant of these lands, and I truly appreciate it.

    My wife is from Perm. When I was there I noticed that There are some areas with houses with German Architecture. In fact these were built by nazi prisoners. It is a moment when you feel in some place in Germany. I ve not visited the Gulag. My wife says you have a weird vibe when you get there. For sure it was a place in the middle of nowhere at the time. Great video. The Urals is for strong people.

      Russians commonly say this, such and such was built by the Germans but a lot of Russian architecture does look somewhat teutonic. Bit of a myth. I'm sure German POWs built some things in Russia but not to the extent people often say. Also, I think when people saw prisoners building things they may have assumed they were German POWs, but in reality the vast majority were GULAG prisoners.

      @@steven-k. You may be right. Just to notice, Soviet architecture was a standard and quite different since Bolshevik s took power in the early 1900. from street traces to house plans. It is quite different in some areas the way rooms and distributions are built in an architectural manner. The ones I make reference are old town areas around Perm. A well known weapons and missile manufacturer city since imperial days. That even was not specified in maps nor allowed outsiders in and out.

      1. 1920-1933 - "constructivism" something similar to german "bauhaus"
      2. 1933-1955 - "staliance" stalinist pompastic architecture which as well divided to pre WWII and post-war
      3. 1955-1964 - "primitivism" of Khruschev era
      4. 1964-1990 - "brutalism"
      All these typical and looking absolutely the same 5 stories flat roof white bricks either reinforced concrete modules ugly "khrooschovkas" were built in 1957-1968. Since approximately 1966 they started to built mostly 9 stories blocks of flats. Greedy commies was always trying to cut the cost - there for in 5 stories blocks of flats you`ll never find elevator and in 9 stories has only one small elevator.

      @@roach7616 I ended up here as most foreign nationals do - It's called the Slovak trap, I married one of them :) - It was the best thing I could have done (moving here), Bratislava is a great place to live and raise a family. Central Europe is just fantastic in general. Hungary, Czech, Austria all within a very short drive and it's safe everywhere. No better place to live for me. Just do it. Hungary is awesome, get somewhere around Lake Balaton in Zala county, you wouldn't regret it.

      In the military, we learn to not use acronyms when honoring the lost and the dead. We take the time to note Prisoners of War and those who've been Killed in Action. And of course, we pray they Rest in Peace, and that God has mercy on their soul.

    Truly love your content. You inspire me so much and I wanted my own adventure so this summer I took a roadtrip from Norway to Croatia and stayed there for 2 whole months. Went to villages, drove all over, walked all over. Never in my life have I recived more hospitality from total strangers. You learn a lot by doing «nomadic» adventures like this. Next trip is next year after I save up more money and get vacation from work👍🏼maybe I will even vlog about it!

      Sounds amazing! I'm young right now, not even old enough to legally drive just yet (in most of my states- I'm in the US) but I really want to do something like Mr. Bald's content one day! I'm learning Russian bit by bit so I can visit Russia one day, it has such a beautiful and vast culture. I would love to explore the eastern portions, as well as less tourist-y places like Mongolia. Latvia or Kyrgyzstan. However I'm a girl so this might be harder for me, but it won't stop me from doing what I love to do. Good luck out there!

    Go to Tomsk, great little town with rich history, my great grandparents were sent there from Lithuania. I did the same trip you did, but in the winter, the Russians are amazing people

      Mine were sent from Eastern Poland to the gulag at Arkhangelsk (Archangel) near the Arctic Circle in April 1940.

    I enjoyed yr channel. The university I went to back in my college days, had a Japanese professor who was a POW captured by Russia and sent to the gulag. He survived it. I tried interviewing him back then but he didn’t want to talk about it at all. I’m sure it was too painful to reflect on. Thanks for providing a glimpse of what it may have been like.

      @@dant.3505 It's a monthly magazine with gossip, home remedies, cooking recipes, horoscopes, old sayings, et cetera. Stuff babushka's in the Russian provinces deeply care about. Actually it's very hard to find online. I guess they only sell it at old-fashioned kiosks and bookshops. For learning the Russian language it might be a very nice magazine.
      Bald has turned me into a Soviet nutcase. I started collecting old Soviet books and postcards. When I have time and funds I want to go Soviet adventurising myself.

      Happened to my old girl and myself, travelled to Auschwitz on a bitterly cold day by service bus, arrived in the snow, to find the memorial closing for the day. Goes to show, need to plan ahead on occasions
