Solo Through War-Torn Donbass 🇺🇦

  • 🇺🇦 In 2014 the Ukrainian part of the Donbass erupted into war. Separatists from the Lugansk and Donetsk regions took up arms and took control of Ukrainian towns all along the eastern region of the country. Eventually they were pushed back until they controlled just the cities of Lugansk and Donetsk and some surrounding villages. I went off to visit some of the towns that the Ukrainian army had re-taken along the front lines to see how life was progressing and to hunt for the ultimate Soviet mosaic...

The mural on the destroyed building on 18:05 isn't a random lady. She's a local teacher of Ukrainian literature, she used to teach it for years. Her husband's got injured 20 meters away from the building, and their flat is just in the building nearby, facing the frontline. I think this gives a strong symbolic message, especially considering her profession.
P.S. Mural was made by Australian painter

Think about this, regarding the little girl on the bus filming herself: she is close to, if not living in a war zone. It's the dead of winter in North East Ukraine, probably 15 degrees F, every plant life is dead, the sky is gray (likely has been for months), ground covered in inches of snow ... yet still she smiles bright and finds beauty in her environment. Pretty powerful stuff.

We moved to Czech where I grew up very long time ago but I was still visiting my relatives in Antratsyt fairly regularly right until the war started. I've lost contact with them ever since. Now I have a decent job living in Sweden which makes it easy for me to get cocky sometimes.. but watching your videos humbles me very much.. I wish I could go there and reconnect with my roots again. @Sad snake baking sand cake The one I can remember off hand is a guy names Andrew Princeton (Possibly misspelled the name) getting a head massage in India. The video may be called The Head Massage, but I'm not sure. The video is grainy and rough, with little in the way of nice presentation. The challenge is that finding those older videos now is getting tougher. The way RUclips organizes videos, it seems that the older ones get buried. I've noticed a lot of old videos I used to see are impossible to find, if they're still on here at all.

For somewhere that gets barely 3 minutes of screen time and is relatively glazed over in this video to be basically the focus of the entire world right now is crazy..
Also extremely eerie to know that everything we are seeing is rubble now. I hope that everyone we see and meet in this video is safe xx

They just wanted to hear the stats. When did this country exist, who ruled it, what type of government and did they have or the war history.

Привіт) What did the man at 27:42 mean, who are they who renamed the city into Бахмут?)

@@user-mb4ux7xv4j From what I've gathered, the name Artemivsk came from the nickname of a Bolshevik leader , Artyom. In 2015, the Ukranian government under Poroshenko signed a law that forced towns with Communist names to get renamed. Apparently, Bakhmut was the original name, and Artemvisk came up in 1924. Correct me if I am wrong, though.

That's a bit complicated... He speaks about people or goverment with anti-soviet / anti-communism views. In Donbass region quite many people would agree with him. At least 30%. Espessially old generation.

@@user-mb4ux7xv4j No idea what he meant. Bakhmut is a name of a river, and the town was called after it.

@@user-mb4ux7xv4j pretty sure he meant the Ukrainian government that renamed all these cities and towns named after communist party leaders etc. To be fair, I would not expect much historical knowledge on the original name of the town from this kind of folks.

This episode should be shown on BBC One at 7.30pm instead of the diarrhoea that people in the UK get served on their TVs. I don’t think I’ll ever forget some of the exchanges Ben had in this video. Just brilliant travel reporting. Give this man all the BAFTAs.
