I never knew I needed an ES 335 until I just now watched your video - 26 May 2022. Sorry for being late to the party. Your content is great. Please keep releasing them.
you guys are great to me you are pure late 60s and 70s guitar rock guys and thats cool im 54yrs old and that time was my era rock on guys you are way the best guitar based profile on you tube you dont bitch about other people and keep it light and all about guitars so from me thankyou.
Just stumbled across this video of the mighty 335. I have an original '84 with Shaw PAFs, and it is just the most beautiful playing and sounding 335..sounds a lot like that '59. Good video thanks Doug and Pat.
Pat, your playing is fanastic on this video, the best i have heard so far... i loved the more vintage models, but they all sounded very good in your hands, and with that Vox. Please do never buy a lighter to Pat, I love seing him trying to light those matches while you are trying to demonstrate gears :) Love the show... please keep it going for a long time :) PS: i would love to see you guys compare the 58 or 60 to replicas from high-end builders
+The Doug and Pat Show I'm usually a strat guy that dabbles in ES land. I'm moving more to the ES land these days though and must say that the '59 you played was the best isolated guitar sound I've ever heard. All of the guitars sounded great, but that '59 wow! I dig the show, almost feels like I'm hanging out too. Keep up the good work.
I liked the neck pickup on the 65 best and then the bridge pickup on the 59 335. But yeah that there PAF on the neck of the 65 335 was howling....killer!
That '59 through that Vox is SO killin'! Love 335's and your show! I take it, you guys are around my age (60 ish?). It's always nice to hear players with that great "old school" vibrato and bluesy chunk leading into it, especially on those guitars through that amp!
We mic the cabinet with an AT 4040 condenser mic about 18 inches away through Pro Tools totally dry and flat, no eq or compression. We put in a little of the camera mic for ambiance and edit everything in the video program Power Director. It ends up sounding the way it sounded in the room to us. D & P
My grandpa smoked a pipe (with tobacco) This video was awesome. It just shows me people who are passionate. 335's are the greatest guitar ever made. They can do anything.
This was really a lot of fun guys! The 335s are magnificent instruments. You checked out some real winners there. If you wanted to, you could really explore the unbelievable variety of 335s. This could be a one hour special, if you checked out one from the 1950s, 1960s 1970s, etc.. My 335 is a 1973 model with T-Top humbuckers. Quite a beautiful growl from these pups. The 335 pups started out with the pafs then moved onto the patented pups, then to the chrome and T-tops to the later ones, which have their own unique qualities. If you diid that special, I'd be glad to come out and see you with my 1973 model. Bring a bit of Bourbon too, if you please. Cheers!
The 65 must have the pickups set closer to the strings... the neck seems to be fighting the left hand moreso than the first one. Killer sound on the 65. The sound on the 65 sounded best to my ears. Had both bight and honk as well as some nice sweet tones.
You guys are very entertaining!! You do great reviews and you don't take yourselves too serously. The match that never lights always cracks me up. This is one of my favorite youtube channels. Keep it up.
We use D'Addario XL 120+ .009.5-.044 on our Gibson and Gibson scale guitars because for us they just feel right but that's just us. We haven't tried anything else brand wise mainly because we can't find any other brand in this gauge in the local stores. Oh yeah, and we're kind of lazy too. D & P
Hey fantastic video! Which is the first guitar your playing, it sounds awesome! I love that overdrive sound? Please tell me which Guitar is that and amp you are playing through. Are you using an overdrive pedal? Sorry if I am asking too many questions. Thank you. I have an Epiphone Dot, but I know pickups are different. Mine has an Alnico Classic in the Neck and an Alnico Classic Plus in the Bridge. I was wondering if I upgrade my pickups to PAFs can I get the same sound.
You just can't beat a good 335. I currently own 25 guitars, and my 1990 Dot Reissue 335 is my favorite of all of them. These guitars are so versatile I don't need the other 24 in my collection. The 335 can do it all, and in all genres.
I like the 65 the most. .. it has the most character. ..the neck is full n very woody. .. the bridge is fat ballsy n has good definition. .... sounds better than the 59 even though they both have pickups from the same year
Oh my god!! This just made my day!! I love BB King and Freddie King and Eric cCapton and they all play gibson ED 335's. my dream guitar. Plus I know John Koonce and I'm from Portland. This is very personal for me.
To me the 1959 sounds the best! The modern ones sound a little too "creamy", kinda dark and muddy, on clean sounds, especially on the neck pick-up. Better when you crank it up and add a little distorsion, then they all cut through. But the PAF's on the '59... those are the real deal! You can hear that well on while you're playing some Crossaroads in the outro
ilcobradiravacciano I think Seymour Seth Lovers have that PAF sound. I put them on my wife’s guitar an she has the best sounding guitar in the band. No, I don’t work for Seymour Duncan.
Should be '57 Classics in the '95. Did you guys by chance check the difference in body thickness between the 335's you demoed? I've noticed they are all over the place. My '85 Dot is on the the thinner side w/ a steeper than I want neck angle, but still sounds good. :>) Great stuff guys...THX!
For those of us who wouldst still smoke but cardio forbids, the "almost" light up wuz a dark riot... So will folks now send in matches & lighters? Also, was the '59 lighter weight than its mates & Doug, did/do you have a favorite? Thanx for the vid and... cheers from Koreatown, Los Angeles
That '65...with essentially a trapeze tailpiece. Those are some really cool ES-335's with that format, get kind of a rockabilly bounce going on with that extra string length back there. Just wish the necks from that era weren't so skinny and narrow at the nut. But that's my favorite sounding one out of the ones you played, with the '59 being a close second.
that vox has a tone to die for. It is so dinamic and powerful with the exactly right ammount of compression. The downside is that it is certainly too loud for bedroom. Is it?
Hi Doug and Pat - question for you - I have a Gibson custom memphis figured dot cherry 2013. How can I tell if it is a standard or a reissue or a traditional. I called Gibson and all the guy could tell me was it was a dot. How do I know what it is modelled after? It is great but what is it.
Does Pat ever get his cigar or pipe lit? I watched him struggle in another vid as well as he must have spent a good 10 solid minutes trying to strike that match! LOL.....I'm pulling for him! Love the channel guys! Keep these vids coming and the longer the better!
59 and 65 have killer sound, the others not dissapointed (in general 335 line never dissapointed to me, ha, ha), excellent demonstration, greetings from Argentina!!
the hollow bodies are made in the Memphis shop (335s/ES175s) not sure the big jazz box , the L5, though. Nashville turns out different varieties of Les Pauls these days. . The 335s are pressed plywood and the forming presses are in Memphis..at least what I was told in my factory tour in 2007.
I think there's more overdrive in the first one, other tan that they're pretty similar, vintage ones sound more focused, new ones have a more open sounding, a bit more bassy, I prefer the focused tone.
malcocreative, Food for thought: Over the decades, since the 70s, I’ve only seen Lee Ritenour play one ES-335 - the same for Larry Carlton. Once a great player has a serviceable guitar, it’s all over.
Gongrats on another great video! Question about 335 guitars. What type strings do you think work best with these guitars? Pure nickel, or nickel plated steel?? Or does it depend on the individual guitar's tone?
The USA stamp and volute on the back of the headstock is 1970 or later, white Norlin tag in the sound hole, stamped or decal serial number. There are a lot of great web sites for dating guitars or you can send us the serial number and some photos at thedougandpatshow@gmail.com and we'll help. D&P
Howdy guys. I've seen many of your pickup and "Les Paul" videos, with a Heritage. Have you tried any of the 535s, in comparison to the Gibson VOS guitars? Just curious, since the Heritage stuff is coming out of the old Gibson factory, how that stack up?
Im having trouble dating my es. The serial code from Gibson's pdf download matches a 60 something(can't remember right now) but I've been told by a local guy here in WV that its probably a 71. It has the USA stamp, but the code matches 68. Any advice?
NoyzyBoyZ3 The Vox head is a 1965 AC10 Super Reverb Twin which is a different amp than the AC10 combo. We run it into two Celestion 12 inch silver alnico speakers also 1965. We find this combination brings out the personality of each guitar and pickup better than anything else we have used. With the exception of the amp shows we use it all the time. D&P
The Doug and Pat Show Man you're not kidding, what a tone from thing, the kind of sound that would make me play it all day!! This is the first video of yours that I've seen that's why I was asking. If you don't mind, may I ask you about a Gibson Midtown that I had recently?Since you guys seem to be knowledgeable on the 335.I was very disappointed with that guitar, and please tell me that I was correct.I can't believe that a 335 would play as shitty as this did.If I didn't know better,it felt like an Epiphone made Korea! If you're familiar with those, just let me know briefly if you have some time.I no longer own it bytw.. I'm enjoying the videos, and I'll be looking for some more! Also, some good playing there!
According to Gibson that is true but there are cherry 335's that go back to 1958 (at least one) and about six from '59. We read the amazing blog of Charlie Gelber at OK Guitars because he deals them more than anyone. Custom order? Don't know but he would, go to his site and ask him, he'll reply. D&P
Great to see those classic guitars. You did make a huge mistake though. Play both pickups. That is what gives you that kick in the stomach feel to your chords. Nice show though.
I know this is an old video but I still can't believe Gibson settled on the 57s and put them on everything. To me they are a muddy piece of but Gibson was probably trying to sell some pups after the fact.
By the way Pat...I bought my 1967 335 from you back in 1977 for $275. Best guitar I ever bought. Thanks man.
Nice to see you both playing at the end of the video.
I met Doug at a Guitar show once and he is such a nice guy. Very friendly and a great guitar player! Great show guys! Keep it going!
I never knew I needed an ES 335 until I just now watched your video - 26 May 2022. Sorry for being late to the party. Your content is great. Please keep releasing them.
Those are some great sounding 335s. This episode inspired me to pick up mine, which is a 2009, and play it for the weekend.
The Cherry Red 59..just sounds SICK!! hahaha..PAF's baby..love it..that baby has TONE!
Always a great show from Doug and Pat. 335s are the greatest electric guitars ever imho. Mine are 59 64 and 68 and all brilliant.
Some of the best sounds are from underwound, un-potted alnico 2 pickups. Especially through semi hollow rigs.
you guys are great to me you are pure late 60s and 70s guitar rock guys and thats cool im 54yrs old and that time was my era rock on guys you are way the best guitar based profile on you tube you dont bitch about other people and keep it light and all about guitars so from me thankyou.
Sweet Jesus, Pat, come here and let me light that friggin' thing for you!!!!
Wet matches?
He still hasn't got it lit.
Hey guys let's remember to demonstrate the sound of both pickups together.
A Deluxe Reverb would be a nice amp to hear the sound on.
Just stumbled across this video of the mighty 335. I have an original '84 with Shaw PAFs, and it is just the most beautiful playing and sounding 335..sounds a lot like that '59. Good video thanks Doug and Pat.
Been rockin' my '61 355 Mono since 1996. That Vox rox! Thanks guys, new viewer here.
Pat, your playing is fanastic on this video, the best i have heard so far... i loved the more vintage models, but they all sounded very good in your hands, and with that Vox.

335s bring out the best playing in everyone. 😜
"please do never buy a lighter to..."???
i bought a epi 335 sight unseen. i owned the big brother 1974. miles apart i know. nice video and great licks, bonamassa-ish. see you again real soon.

95 sounds best to me! Thanks for sharing guys.

Now if I could just afford one! lol. What a greatw sound. Hands down my favorite guitar sound. Woody, throaty , balsy. it does not get any better.
We mic the cabinet with an AT 4040 condenser mic about 18 inches away through Pro Tools totally dry and flat, no eq or compression. The sound on the 65 sounded best to my ears. Had both bight and honk as well as some nice sweet tones.
When I played a 335 I was playing Les Pauls. 335s have that extra dimension. I don't like any Norlin era Gibson's I tried.
All these sound good!
You guys are very entertaining!! You do great reviews and you don't take yourselves too serously. The match that never lights always cracks me up. This is one of my favorite youtube channels. Keep it up.
I really dug the jam at the end , Is there any way to hear you do more of that ?
335's are the Holy Grail....... and if lucky enough to have one with some old PAF's...man - you're in Heaven on Earth..

I just LOVE that Vox amp!

B. B. King played an ES-355, with no F-holes and a special tone control, but aside from that you might be right :-)
One day I hope to have the kind of pick attack technique that Doug has. Holy shit..... such confidence and experience in that attack
To me the 1959 sounds the best!

Could you post a link to the Bonamassa video about neck angle you referenced? Thanks!
how COOL you guys are!

Hey guys are you in the Portland area? If so you should hook up with Andy Martin Pgs &reverb .that could be an epic show guys.
the hollow bodies are made in the Memphis shop (335s/ES175s) not sure the big jazz box , the L5, though. Nashville turns out different varieties of Les Pauls these days. . The 335s are pressed plywood and the forming presses are in Memphis..at least what I was told in my factory tour in 2007.
+SuperCarver2011 The 335 referred to in the show is a 1996 made in Nashville before the Memphis plant opened around 2000. D&P
+The Doug and Pat Show Have you seen the new 2016 Gibson ES-335? That ES-335 is one terrific guitar, don't you think so?
Compare 7:15 to 13:20 is there really that much difference? Would that difference be down to pick ups or nut/saddle material?
I think there's more overdrive in the first one, other tan that they're pretty similar, vintage ones sound more focused, new ones have a more open sounding, a bit more bassy, I prefer the focused tone.
I hope that I can rock out one day I'm retired on RUclips or some future channel! Nice work guys!
Cool old guys play cool old guitars.
Hy Guys.....the Voc AC 10 you played at this video....is this an old one or a new version?
I guess the ES335TDN I just got is a keeper. A great guitar. Perhaps the custom shop's last hurrah prior to restructure.
The best, most perfect guitar of all time. And you're right. Every one is different. So why not buy up nine or ten of em!!!
malcocreative,

Top wrapped!?
Did the guy with beard manage somehow to light that match until the end of video, well, let me know I gotta go.
Oh shit, you missed it! He burned that fuckin house down and all the guitars. Wish you could have seen it.
I've got two. The '74 is sweet and bluesy and the '95 is more aggressive. Great guitars, both !
great show love it
God that second one sounds just unbelievable
looks like that reissue had short rings on it, could just be an optical illusion. but if so, thats not original spec, correct?
Does he ever get the match to light? ;)

You guys are great! Ever checked out the Gibson B. B. King Lucille Guitar? Or the Gibson LPJ & Gibson SGJ Guitar?
+The Doug and Pat Show Heavy Playing, Doug! Heavy Playing!
Those guitars have something worth listening to.
What is the difference between Nashville and Memphis made 335s?
Howdy guys. I've seen many of your pickup and "Les Paul" videos, with a Heritage. Have you tried any of the 535s, in comparison to the Gibson VOS guitars? Just curious, since the Heritage stuff is coming out of the old Gibson factory, how that stack up?

I'm diggin' the pipe too..

The first 335 sounded amazing. A beautiful thick chuncky sound.
The first es335 PAF sounds amazing!
That Vox sounds great, what model is it? My first time here, not familiar with the gear onhand.
NoyzyBoyZ3 The Vox head is a 1965 AC10 Super Reverb Twin which is a different amp than the AC10 combo. We run it into two Celestion 12 inch silver alnico speakers also 1965. I just like to hear Pat play.
Doug, what kind of strap is that? Very nice
It's a Gretsch, reissue of a vintage one and yeah, it's nice. D&P
Thanks, Doug.
2007 Classic 57s 👍🏾
Cherry wasn’t a finish option until 1960. Was this a custom order?
According to Gibson that is true but there are cherry 335's that go back to 1958 (at least one) and about six from '59. We read the amazing blog of Charlie Gelber at OK Guitars because he deals them more than anyone. Custom order? Don't know but he would, go to his site and ask him, he'll reply. D&P
Man...that '59 is a benchmark all around.
Nothing like the tone of a 335. Dammit one day I'll be able to afford one.
you guys need to allow adverts on this channel. i wouldnt mind helping to support what youre doing, just by watching.
thank you. -thumbs up-
You guys are great!Woof!!
tidepoolbay I see you, like, on a lot of es 335 vids, seen you on the Luther Dickinson es 335 vid
Is your web site up and running?
this is awesome, wish you guys would mic the amps better if they are mic'd at all!
The 65 sounds fantastic the newer with the 57 classic not so good
Great to see those classic guitars. You did make a huge mistake though. Play both pickups. That is what gives you that kick in the stomach feel to your chords. Nice show though.
That Vox is a little beast.
No Heritage 535?
what is with that VOX my goodness a Banjo would sound bluesy thru it
Obviosely first one is the best on the bridge
Amen! This is the truth of the matter. P.A.F.'s have that sound because the wax hasn't killed it.
I know this is an old video but I still can't believe Gibson settled on the 57s and put them on everything. To me they are a muddy piece of but Gibson was probably trying to sell some pups after the fact.
A match please !!!!!
That's another show so stay tuned. D & P
The fix for that 95 is just change the wireing to 50s spec. It cleanes the hell out of that muffekd sound.
When you have the tone controls on full, it doen´t matter wich wiring scheme you use.
