In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 6,000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 20 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next? ecstasyoforder.com thectwc.com - Игры
Man I wish I could watch this live! :(
You cant both watch and play, choose one.
What do you mean? looked like you were watching Danz screen half the time, and playing the other, seems to me like you got front row seats!
Well, i for one wish i could have watched the audience live from your point of view. :D
Isn't that why you looked up and behind you at one point in this match? To catch yourself on the big screen?
keep going to the champ 2019 my idol .... !!! Just go to beat seven times champ of Jonas ! You can make it !
I kinda faceplanted two games in this match, but it's not every day you play the world champ! It was great playing you, Joseph, you deserved this win!
Well done dude! I envy your skills.
At least you did better than the seven time champ, not getting sweeped! you have proven that you have great potential, i think i heard you only picked the game up for a year and look where you are! I cant wait to see you next year, and thanks for the show!
See you in a future CTM! Hope to see you against Final Boss!
@DanQZ what did you say at 19:38?
You got a brilliant future ahead of you, Dan! I'm pretty sure we are all waiting to see so much more from you.
14:30 Joseph big brain
Was wondering if anyone else noticed since the commentators didnt :D
80% of Joseph's losses happen because he peeks at the opponent.
Mauri Sombowadile what no
That or him overestimating his hypertapping ability. He have a lot of losses where he scored less than 300k because he built too high
I think at this point Joseph is my favourite player to watch, he does crazy things and still manages to respond to commentators, making it incredibly fun
Joseph seems much more chill when playing now haha
Ikr! Last year he was so focused and too intense but now he's more relax and unstoppable.
He's streaming more I guess?
It looks like his decisions are much better now that he's relaxing and enjoying himself a little more, rather than trying to be laser focused
Last year: (In tears) I came here to qualify and now I got to beat all those legends
This year: *taunts in semifinal
yeah, he's becoming a bit too overconfident
@@netcrns and he has the right to!
if he has the skills to play tetris to a professional level, pay attention to the commentators AND do some risky plays just for the viewers' sake, that's pretty damn impressive
You're to insecure.
@@Looooren And Tetris has never been so much fun to watch!
@@netcrns Ah... here come the haters. (Familiarity breeds contempt).
Now that Joseph plays with confidence, it's almost unbeatable. With Green Tea was the advanced finals I think
Diego Saint Esteban the confidence is key. Next year when Dan has calmed the nerves he’s going to break out with something special. Just watch
Diego - I was about to make almost the exact same comment!
Joseph has been able to look at his opponents screen so frequently, and able to interact with the commentators, he may as well be part of the audience, just with a super front seat row.
I feel like the real final already happened with greentea vs joseph
MegaBetch soooo true
nah koryan still top greentea, but still joseph is the beast
I'm sure MANY players share that sentiment!
@@souleymanediawara7714 meh the match with greentea was way better than the one with koryan
The finals were great tho too. I watched live. You won't be disappointed
I feel like DanQZ has some serious potential, give him another year to practice and he might just take it next year.
He's only played for a year anyways to make top 4 is incredible
@WARRIOR FIGHTER PAHLAWAN "Mark my word" some popular opinion you got there
Loving Joseph's confidence and good sportsmanship, he was so nervous last year so its good to see him be confident and enjoying the camera
17:22 - 17:51 Joseph turns a 12k point lead into a 100k point lead in 29 seconds
Absolutely amazing how Joseph is practically spectating DanQZ while playing in the 3rd game, he's enjoying all the drama on the other screen while still winning pulling 75% tetris rate. what a beast...
Dan QZ: "What I do is, I, I just try to take my hat. And I turn it around. And it's like a switch that goes on."
Preemie Maboroshi didn’t work lol
@@DanQZ lol. Still, you did awesome!
Ash ketchum mode
@@DanQZ *makes top 4 first year* "It didn't work"
Over the top. Great movie!
I first wondered why the videos are so long, but it is just to prevent spoilers.(in a 2-0 when there is only 1 minute left, it isn't hard to guess who will win)
I was wondering the same, thanks for the answer to that. Actually a very good thing cause i often accidently look at how much time there is left and then getting spoiled.
It's a good start for getting rid of spoilers. Obviously commenting on what's happening on the other stage and this way spoiling upcoming matches is even worse. So cutting those commentaries or just don't make them in the first place would be an even better method of spoiler avoidance.
@@spacecomplex7180 they are made to be live though so they shouldn’t have to optimise for RUclips so much
I think Green Tea and Joseph are top notch players. Exciting matches and game play..
Including Koryan these 3 same level
@@yuanfeng7266 Only one of them can still play past the kill screen. Joseph.
@@RevengeFNF not consistantly, otherwise greentea wouldn't have taken that first round.
@@Jack_80 No one can play 100% perfect every game. But on the big picture, he is by far the best. But like i said, he is the only one that can play the Kill Screen and he have the World Record of reaching Level 33. All the other players, once they reach Level 29, they simple stop playing, and that includes Green Tea.
Their match in the Round of 8 was at the same level as any finals in the past. Perhaps they should go to dual elimination and add a losers bracket as well to let us see more games from the amazing players that get knocked out in their first match. Importantly the seeding does not seem to reflect the player skill as well as it had in the past with the bracket filling out with all the new top level players.
its so interesting to see the weirdly twisted controller grips of these guys
I can't get over how both of them hold their controller.
If Joseph ever loses in this, it's because he listens to the commentary in the background & responds to it too much. Granted he does make watching this more interesting for spectators, it's apparent he's not 100% zoned in on his game. That said, it's also a testament how good he really is that he is performing at such a high level with something like 90% focus.
Everybody does what helps him the most. Maybe he plays better when he isnt fully zoned in
If you thought that was bad, watch him stream. He reads the chat while he plays. This was nothing
legit this year joseph has been as fun and joyful to watch as green tea and that's saying something. now that he has the confidence he really lets his personality peak through
That moment when the commentator makes an "Over the Top" reference and then you realize both contestants wheren't even born when that movie came out.
Almost feels like once Joseph topped out he was genuinely rooting for DanQZ. That right there is some grade A sportsmanship.
27:02 LMAO
👀 oops
don't make fun of badfoy :-D
13:50 they started with different piece placements butsomehow ended with the same setup
It's unfortunate how early Jonas went out because new viewers won't get to witness how good he really is. I believe the top four in the world are Joseph, Koryan, Jonas, and Green Tea. Aside from Jonas going out early this year, I haven't seen anyone defeat any of those four players apart from each other since 2017 when a jetlagged Koryan lost to Alex Kerr.
I definitely agree here. Nothing against DanQZ but there were definitely a few players better than him that didn't make it as far in the tournament this year. Green Tea is my favorite of all to watch, but I was also really impressed with Josh this year and Terry. Looking forward to seeing Koryon and Batfoy
I like Joseph's smiling, he is so cute.
gay?
@@abemulligantralz8806
No, I'm straight.
righttttt
Yeah, it's entertaining to watch him because of that
Thanks for the view of their hands! It's interesting to see different techniques of hypertapping. Hope you guys keep that in future tetris videos!
23:20 that well shift by joseph blew my mind cause i didn't even realise it was happening til i rewatched it twice
4 hypertappers in the finals, and people still question if its the future. It's the now
3,Batfoy isnt but non hyper tappers will still be able to hang anyways, even if knowone can probly beat Joseph and Koryan from here on out.
Considering the match between greentea and joseph compared to this match here, greentea performed much better without hyper tapping. Seeding and single elimination brackets decide who is the best, but not who is the second best.
But will hypertapping lead to Repetitive Strain Injuries in the long run? Something to keep in mind.
@@BucketCapacity Not necessarily, BubbleRhapsody invented a new technique that mitigates that. If you use a modern controller and adjust the sensitivity you can register button presses by vibrating
@@DanielSong39 Are those controllers allowed at the championship?
Dan: *gets a favorable tetris-ready field*
I's: ima finna head out
Z's and O's: Let us intoduce ourselves
Lol\
happens to me a lot
I love the way Dan holds the pad. Taking that hyper tapping to the next level
14:30 crazy back to back adjustments for joseph
16:50 that adjustment tho 😂
Getting to be in the room, live, was PRICELESS! The energy of watching these matches, with people is so different than watching on RUclips! 👌🏽 11/10 would recommend haha
It's unreal how Joseph can play Tetris while literally spectating his opponent's game as well:
17:45
Gives the "alright good set-up" head nod, followed by the immediate "oof" face once Dan couldn't quite profit from it. What a nutty player.
right shows how much hes in control of his game he wasnt even worried
Every time i watch these it gets me fired up to play some tetris and then i remember it takes hundreds of hours of practice to get this good haha
Alright, its 3 times RUclips recommend this ever in my life. Let's go !
Joseph’s famous last words: “batfoy please win”
Omg, i watched it live but i totally forgot it even happened because of how intense the Greentea one was
Would love to get eye tracking on these sometimes, just to see what they players are looking at during the games.
Tetris is the perfect metaphor of life
You make mistakes, hate yourself but have to deal with it and fix it
And no matter how good you are,
it can always manage to screw you up.
YOOO this is the most BM I’ve ever seen in Tetris. I love cocky Joseph.
Cocky Joseph is oddly nice to see compared to his shy and tense attitude last year-
Tetris community is so wholesome......love it
Joseph is singlehandedly the best Tetris player I have ever seen before!
There just isn't anyone at Joseph's level. GG Dan and GG Joseph
Joseph seems to have caught Green Teas wholesome reactions, love it
I feel like one of Joseph’s most charming attributes is that he’s able to interact with the commentators and audience in a way while he’s in the middle of a game. Really adds to his character, and I think it’s one of the reasons (along with him being an extraordinary player at such a young age) that so many people root for him
Levels of Tetris:

@9:52 Joseph made the face cuz he foresees a potential perfect clear
Joseph is just on another level
Yes, level 31
@@moetthepoet 32
why is this so fun to watch
When you simultetris but you somehow end up 100k behind. Rough day to be facing Joseph.
Boom Tetris for Joseph!
I never tire of hearing that.
They do right-sided wells because the pieces drop with a right side advantage. There are 10 columns on the play field, the piece cannot drop right in the middle, so the pieces generally favor dropping to the right. When an 'S' piece drops, for example, there are four columns to the left, where there are only three to the right.
Joseph casually with over 4 tetrises ahead LOL that 2nd game pace... Sick
James Chen is offically a legend in my book, the omni-commentator
„In the Future everybody will be famous for 15 Minutes.“
I said it already shortly after 2018 tournament: Joseph will mark a new era - with his young age (quicker reaction times) and his hypertapping-technique and of course his talent, he will dominate the next years. I don't see anyone better than him. The only one who can defeat him is he, himself - when he goes too casual and over-confidenced into a match (like game 3 vs Dan).
I just come here every year to hear the casters say "Boom tetris for *Insert player name*"
2018: Underdog -> Champion
2019: Still got it!
9:54 look at Joseph here he knew if an I piece was next he would have totally cleared the field. But no :(
Joseph is such a fascinating player to watch. The way he's able to glance at the upcoming piece and make last-minute adjustments with the current piece to create an optimal field is truly next-level. I was a little sad when Joseph ended Jonas's domination of the world championship a few years ago because Jonas was my favorite player, but Joseph has really won me over. An incredible competitor.
Also, imagine being so far above everyone else in skill level that you can afford to style on your opponents like Joseph does with that dirty Tetris at 23:56, or when he deliberately burns a line suboptimally at 9:50-9:56 just on the off-chance that he'll get a long bar two pieces later for a field-clearing Tetris. Wild stuff.
Goodluck to both of youuuu
Joseph is such a good sportsman and Tetris seems like a great community.
Its great watching joseph have so much fun
Where's the final? Only just discovered pro tetris and now I wanna see if Joseph can repeat
I'm so happy to see the hyper tapping handcam. boom tetris joseph!!
Love the Schnittke music in the background ;)
Final was already happened with geentea... It was amazing...
I love the terms "simultetris" and "simultransition" 😂
Bet you guys next year joseph will win as well, as well as the year after and the other year after and you get the point
Night Raid Okay Jonas Neubauer
Green tea has a really good chance if he puts more effort in preparing for the tournament
@@navidhasan7556 *if he doesn't spend as much time peeking at the other screen and does something about his misdrops^^
@@ParadoxDelta Didnt Joseph Saellee do something like that during the 2018 ctwc tho? He peeked and misplaced two line blocks
With how fast new players are emerging as top tier players, and as this event brings in more competitors then we may get many more new champions instead of a repeat Jonas
I got a recommendation for tetris 2018 championship today and bam!, I'm gonna watch 2019 championship too which is gonna be today
Who else always ends up rooting for the underdogs in those matches?
They should have continued showing the commentary at the end. Those guys are funny as hell!
Nobody can beat this man!

A Joseph Saelee vs. Koryan rematch...?? Saucy!! 😁😁✌️✌️
It astounds me how Joseph is able to interact with the commentators, peek at his opponent's screen, and play like that at the same time. Like, hotdamn.
That's what competitive game ought to be about: cheer each other on. Joesph shows that like no other 👍
Joseph is the reason most pvp games have a surrender/forfeit option. Sometimes you really do have a 0% chance of winning.
Can we get a ‘boom Tetris for Joseph’ count?
let's win again joseph

You have on internet who won :D
@@mpetkovic26 more interesting to find who win was watching the livescream, the game in finals is just... Wow
Dan here really improved alot these past 6 months, great tournament as always but seems like alot of the vets didnt lose because these newer players are better just a bunch of random circumstances over aggression a little bad luck and some bad choices.Theyl be back and do better next year especially Jonas, but everyone whos got this far 100 percent earned it obviously regardless.
at 17:44 u can see Joseph looking at Dan screen while still playing his game, i found it really impressive !
while streaming he reads the chat while playing
Coming back to watch this for the millionth time right after the finals from the year before, but all I can say is
I only just realised that Joseph got his braces removed
I really wish the players were mic'd up. I'd like to know what DANQZ said that made everyone laugh when the Commentator mentioned the 130k lead for JOSEPH.
I sadly missed this years Tetris worldchampionships. Do you know what is with Jonas this years? Wasnt He playing?
He got eliminated in the round of 32, sadly

DanQZ has only played for a year and he did something that even Jonas can't do.
Beat Joseph at least once.
I'm proud of DanQZ. Good showing against the monster 😋
joseph is legit one of those anime characters i swear just plays with ease
