    In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 6,000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 20 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next? ecstasyoforder.com thectwc.com

      Their match in the Round of 8 was at the same level as any finals in the past. Perhaps they should go to dual elimination and add a losers bracket as well to let us see more games from the amazing players that get knocked out in their first match. Importantly the seeding does not seem to reflect the player skill as well as it had in the past with the bracket filling out with all the new top level players.

    If Joseph ever loses in this, it's because he listens to the commentary in the background & responds to it too much. Granted he does make watching this more interesting for spectators, it's apparent he's not 100% zoned in on his game. That said, it's also a testament how good he really is that he is performing at such a high level with something like 90% focus.

    They do right-sided wells because the pieces drop with a right side advantage. There are 10 columns on the play field, the piece cannot drop right in the middle, so the pieces generally favor dropping to the right. When an 'S' piece drops, for example, there are four columns to the left, where there are only three to the right.

    9:54 look at Joseph here he knew if an I piece was next he would have totally cleared the field. But no :(

  • @HarbingerOfDuh
    @HarbingerOfDuh 3 года назад

    Joseph is such a fascinating player to watch. The way he's able to glance at the upcoming piece and make last-minute adjustments with the current piece to create an optimal field is truly next-level. I was a little sad when Joseph ended Jonas's domination of the world championship a few years ago because Jonas was my favorite player, but Joseph has really won me over. An incredible competitor.
    Also, imagine being so far above everyone else in skill level that you can afford to style on your opponents like Joseph does with that dirty Tetris at 23:56, or when he deliberately burns a line suboptimally at 9:50-9:56 just on the off-chance that he'll get a long bar two pieces later for a field-clearing Tetris. Wild stuff.

    Dan here really improved alot these past 6 months,great tournament as always but seems like alot of the vets didnt lose because these newer players are better just a bunch of random circumstances over aggression a little bad luck and some bad choices.Theyl be back and do better next year especially Jonas, but everyone whos got this far 100 percent earned it obviously regardless.
