Jonas (3) vs. Greentea (2)
One of the greatest matches in CTWC history! With commentary by James Chen and Chris Tang.
In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 9000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 30 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next? ecstasyoforder.com thectwc.com
I will never forget this match. I miss you, Jonas.
He was such a positive human being, you could feel it even through only watching him...
The man was a legend and he revolutionized tetris. He will always have a place in our hearts
Rip
It's crazy that I'm so sad about someone who I never met, who I never even knew existed until about 2 years ago. He really had a special personality and was phenomenal at tetris, to say the least. RIP Jonas.
Wait he’s dead?
I had no idea this was a thing and now I'm addicted.

Greentea is the type of guy that would smile and laugh while getting a speeding ticket. Such a fun player to watch.
I know greentea is still smiling when he lost even if he lost by a lot. He's a very fun and entertaining player, you have to love him!!!
once his controller malfunctioned and he still smiled the whole way
Máté Bősze yeah during the level 19 race part 1, his controllers down button was broken and trey had to get him a new controller, they could redo the match tho and he ended up losing because of it

@Tim Dennett i wrote that 2 years ago homie.
Just wanted to come and watch some of jonas’s best games again. A sad day for tetris but the memories are archived forever.

they do amazingly well considering the level of focus they have to have on gameplay on top of being good communicators.

You are an amazing player with great energy! It's a joy watching you play, congrats on making top 4!
I'll second JSkunk - it's a pleasure to watch you play.
You have nothing to be ashamed of. So much genuine joy, energy and love for the game that it's contagious!
You're too fun to watch dude
How? Ur easily the handsomest CTWC player.
RIP, jonas. You helped build the ctwc, you helped get me into Tetris. I was rooting for you at the last ctwc. I didn't think it would be the last time is get to see you play. We've all lost something with your passing, but your legacy will live on.
He really passed out? for real?
@germanandres24 yeah, very suddenly. We still miss him to this day.

"Now Jonas, though, look at him" *greentea looks at jonas*
lmao
Hahaha nice
I honestly think if Greentea hadn't been constantly looking over at Jonas during this matchup that he probably could/would have won it.
Oof
He was following orders
That last play by Greentea..
After the tetris at 29:47, he's on line 227 and 35,820 points behind. A tetris will put him into the kill screen and give him 36,000 points (thanks, Quetzalcoatl :)) for the lead. Even with some clutch burns on the kill screen, he may get a couple of thousands more points max, but he knew Jonas has a few more lines to play with after an earlier glance he made at 29:41.
Assuming Jonas would be able to get at least 1 more tetris (which he did responded with almost immediately after) and increase the score gap to 70,620, his best remaining play is to NOT execute his "last" tetris on line 227 until he prepared TWO tetrises, 1 for line 227 getting him into the kill screen, then another at lv 29 to close the gap:
- He still loses if he score the last tetris, THAT is why he put the I-piece on the side even though the well is already 4 rows deep.
- After the 29:47 tetris, he already had this crazy plan in mind and knew that if he can clutch it, his best chance at level 29 speed would be an early I-piece post-kill screen into a prepared centre well. THAT is why he immediately put the O-piece on the far right even though the board was relatively empty in order to make that shift.
- The two tetrises will give him 72,000 points, just enough to put himself ahead, then the remaining battle will be between the last few lines Jonas has vs how many lines he can clutch by burning at level 29, given that Jonas don't score any more tetrises (which he couldn't).
- This requires extreme timing on when the I-pieces should appear. At 29:57, he's still at least 4 pieces away from 8 rows deep centre well but there's another "early" I-piece, which would create an I-piece dependency on the right side of his board so he used it on the tetris instead, THAT is why he's not happy with his "last" tetris, hence the head tilt.
The execution requires too many correct I-piece timings and building up for 2 tetrises on level 28, but the effort is there, and overall a superb match.
sllnJin great analysis I didn’t notice that at first. Thanks for pointing it out!
Okay but damn
Actually, greentea does have a way to set the 8-high up. At 29:58, the T piece should go in rows 4-5, considering the long bar comes next. That is extremely difficult, but idk, for these people, they might get a last-second adjustment. After that, he should be able to build out the well before the 2 long bars come on levels 28 and 29. He did get 2 long bars close after he got to killscreen, so that strategy is possible.
Edit: he got 3 long bars at killscreen. He can set it up by using the first long bar at the 9th column and a few last-second taps to the left or right might have saved it. He also has 2 lines to burn.
@@jatloe very good. But Greentea often loses concentration at the end. In this things, he is not so good, than other top player. For exampel his double maxout agains Joseph, he made similar mistakes.
But he is maybe the best Quick-Tap-Player
Lero Ok
New Tetris goal: Instead of cursing at level 19 speed misdrops, laugh instead like Greentea lol

@@lamjoe529 asking the real questions
30:05 LOL at the look of horror on Jonas' face when Greentea appears to be surviving the kill screen for a time!!!!!
😂
It's one thing to be defeated because you made too many mistakes, but so far level 29 is a hard barrier in tournament level play. Imagine how demoralizing it is to go down to someone because they have a skill that you don't have in a game you've been dominating for 7 years.

Guy in backround: *BOOM*
my favorite part of the tournament every year is quaid bullying everybody
My friend recently introduced me competitive Tetris. After watching this match, I completely understand why she enjoys it so much. Such a fun and playful atmosphere while at the same time being extremely tense and nail-biting.
Never thought competitive Tetris was a thing until these videos started showing up in my feed. It's definitely a hell lot more difficult than it looks at first appearances.
10:22 Greentea sliding that i-piece over the one he just missed was great, and his reaction was even better. It also seemed like Jonas used the dirty Tetris to transition his well back to the right side more frequently rather than burning singles and doubles. Awesome match, excited to see how the finals all played out.
That was master level right there
What greentea did is what some tappers should do, only reserve tapping on moments where needed, else their fingers will deteriorate faster.
I don't think I've ever seen a professional gamer that's as happy and enthusiastic as GreenTea haha.
greentea smile made my day better :)
He is just one of the friendliest people ever, not only a Tetris god but also humble
RIP Jonas. Legend of this community!
Greentea is such a happy camper!

Passing the torch to the new generations.
Thanks for everything Jonas!
Will remember you the most in October during CTWC....
He played so amazing to in 2020, even beat Eric man whose probably the fastest hyper tapper aropund today. Just not right man really bloody sucks ya know...
Man, all of these ctwc recommendations reminding me of what happened... Jonas had a huge impact on my life as a tetris fan, I loved watching his streams and YT content.
His departure really hit me.
Wow, I am legit addicted to this, like shove all that football noise aside, I haven't been this on-edge for a sport ever. Mad respect.
I agree, I'd like to attend one of these
I don't know any sport with such positive attitude. They should play to 3 wins at this stage however.
WCT
ultimate frisbee has pretty good attitudes
I see what you mean, but it’s a lot of tetris. Almost all the post-qualification games happen on the same day. Playing so much tetris takes a real mental toll and more tetris would make it even harder
It doesn't really seem like a competition to me, but more like a teambuilding activity where both players encourage each other to do their best.
As a pro would say, if you are about to be defeated, make it a graceful one. It can help in the long run
rest in peace the best tertsi player to ever touch the game
This was a beautiful match. Simply glorious. From what I've seen, this one might just be my favorite.
24:33 "oooooOOOOOPS"

Lmao i love it
I bet greentea is soon going to be one of the best players in the world
Hydra already is, top 4 at least
If Greentea played super tryhard with 100% focus he can definitely win the champtionship, I think this was more of a fun event for him
Excuse me ? This is the championship...
Yeah but he didn't take it that seriously
Oh really? How do you know ?
This is my favorite match ever. RIP Jonas Neubauer
Such an entertaining match from both players!

25:23 Greentea gets excited because he might see a clear board. What a loveable character.
Oaksin It's too bad NES Tetris doesn't reward anybody for perfect clears... 😣😣
Greentea got the skills but it seems he's too laidback and his desire to win is not strong enough.

This green tea kid. Love him.

RIP Jonas Neubauer.
Someone in the live chat suggested Jonas start Hyper Tapping.
I replied, "Are you trying to destroy the universe? Jonas Hyper Tapping would overpower Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet."
i think everyone should start hypertapping, its simply optimal
so in this case jonas is literally competing with a physical disability, which in my opinion will stop him from being able to win the coming CTWCs simply because everyone has progressed so much and the difference in ability will overtake the previous difference in wisdom
It's not optimal. You lose precision for that extra speed.
Samurai Jack Understandable that he wouldn't consider hypertapping. To tap a button that much in a second...that's gotta cause some finger/thumb strain. It's only a matter of time before the hypertapping method becomes too much to sustain.
@@zzzpoma9961 I'm not sure about this, I play with keyboard and it's not really a difference, but maybe with a controller it's different because you have no solid ground
The reason I first found enjoyment in Tetris head to head competition. Never thought I would. Rip Jonas

For once I watched Green Tea's board instead of Jonas most of the time. This kid is a really good player! Hope to see more of him in the future! :)
It blows my mind that a game made in 1984 is more complex, competitive and more interesting than 99% of games released today. Not to mention how easy it is to understand and consumable it is to watch while also being incredibly deep to learn. The perfect esport game. What an amazing game.
