    At the 2018 CTWC, we decided to hold a 0-19 Speedrun tournament. The objective is to be the first player to reach level 19 starting from level 0. Four groups of four were randomly chosen, and the winner of each group advanced to the Final Round. With commentary by Arda Ocal and Adam Cornelius. (NOTE: please ignore finishing times quoted by commentators.)
    In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 9000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 30 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next? ecstasyoforder.com thectwc.com

    The commentator seems to periodically forget what the players are trying to do. He keeps talking about their tetris rate and the risk of building high. The whole point is to build high so you can get lines faster. Tetrises are completely meaningless.

    • @sorenschrag
      @sorenschrag 5 лет назад +30

      He honestly kinda annoys me

    • @rahcassi5416
      @rahcassi5416 5 лет назад +100

      Tetrises are not meaningless. They talked about it at one point but the animation for a Tetris is the same speed as a single line clear. This means that clearing 4 lines individually is 4x as slow as getting a Tetris (in terms of animation length, which in a challenge to clear 200 lines, it definitely adds up.) Of course TRT isn't as important as playing high, but it's still a factor and definitely not meaningless.

    • @HannesW123
      @HannesW123 5 лет назад +9

      @@rahcassi5416 If this was TAS then yes, would have to consider those frames lost. Now it means nothing compared to the drop time they lose.. Minutes!

    • @deliro8758
      @deliro8758 5 лет назад +3

      @@HannesW123 Well now with the video in front of our eyes we can see that drop times are significantly lower when you are building high, because you are pressured and need the time to not make bad decisions.
      Even though Joseph hypertaps he never went as high as most and he smoked everyone with a high TRT

    • @EebstertheGreat
      @EebstertheGreat 5 лет назад +7

      I mean at the end of the day, the overwhelmingly most important factor is the percentage of time you are holding down. My point is just that the commentary was totally unhelpful, on this point or any other.

    Does a tetris give you more points the higher up your screen is? Is a tetris at line 1 worth less than a tetris at line 5?

    I notice Joseph had to dumb down his play so he doesn't get too far ahead too quickly starting around 10:07

      ikr, i've been looking for this version but seems like the only way i'll get it is if i get on ebay and get an nes and tetris cartridge. with it being so popular, you'd think they would have the original tetris available on modern consoles.

    Is there a way for normal players to get access to custom tetris UI that you see in these tournaments?

    Would a high stack not be favorible as you can create lines faster and thus level up faster?
