At the 2018 CTWC, we decided to hold a 0-19 Speedrun tournament. The objective is to be the first player to reach level 19 starting from level 0. Four groups of four were randomly chosen, and the winner of each group advanced to the Final Round. With commentary by Arda Ocal and Adam Cornelius. (NOTE: please ignore finishing times quoted by commentators.)
In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 9000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 30 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next? ecstasyoforder.com thectwc.com - Игры
Classic Tetris Speedrun Facts: Players stack higher so that pieces can drop down to the stack faster. Players are also going for Tetrises because the line clear animations add up! The most important factor for faster speed is piece movement execution.
Placement pieces.
basically every tetris champion player
YEY
Where i can go to Challenge one of him, i want to try my abilities.

2:45 Joseph playing tetris sideways.
Low Mike lmao
Bruh😂
Anybody could do that
@@Jasdewisafarmer You should go and beat Joseph next month then, we'll be watching
Josey Stylin yes we will
Just give Joseph the trophy for everything next year.
well he didn´t win the no box challenge
@@andres22jmzo And wouldn't have won this one if koryean didnt top out, and alex was right behind.
@@jeffbyrd6003 Well, he can't be the best in everything. It's simply impossible for literally anyone.
@@lanthiandokenhennes1805 for me he isn't the best yet. Altough he beat Jonas he need 6 more of those
Plus dont count out greentea. Remember. Greentea transitioned from tetris the Grandmaster to nes tetris. He was only one year into nes tetris when he went against Jonas in semis. Meaning he improves damn fast. We dont know how good he could be.
All that lag at the start for him and he still won it.
Joseph
JOJOseph's Bizarre Tetris Adventure ya mean
@@dio9680 That explains everything
He is a Joestar
6:10 AND THE MULLET IS OFF
WAIT NO WAY! KAUSER WAS KORYAN ALL ALONG?!?!
The wig was limiting his playing strength, so the others would have a chance. What a sportsman!
I swear he looked like a kid with the wig
That shook me
I was looking for him too! Didn't realise it was a disguise.
Congrats Joseph, here's your cheap Emulator Handheld.
^
Lol
Yeah, it was cheap, but the system is actually decent
Right!!?? I was thinking the same thing!! Generic off brand prize for putting yourself through unneeded stress.....
Lmfao 😂😂😂
Joseph: Lol this was so different and I’ve never practiced this kinda play before :D
Also Joseph: *Wins*
We need to see Koryan Vs Kauser, they would make an amazing match
Hahaha got me in the first half
The commentary makes this 10x more interesting to watch
Alex was 8 seconds away from Joseph's timing and even improved on his round 1 timing. He deserves some praise too 👍🏼
We all just gonna ignore that Joseph was clearly having technical issues at the beginning?
I think he doesn't get used to the slow motion.
He always like that.......
Those weren't technical difficulties, he was just pressing before the piece set.
Mistakes due to impatience.
@@PhilBushay but are the pieces supposed to just stop for a second on their way down? I mean it doesn't seem like that's supposed to happen
@@IINEXUSGAMERII joseph just let go of the down button too quick.
I'm all for Joseph but I can't help but feel Koryan should've won this one.
Also the person with the fastest time overall should have won.
@@meditalisoo7 no definitely not! Qualifying scores should not determine the winner in a tournament.
@@nils1953 This would only be true if they were actually playing each other. But they just play against time. Why doesn't just everyone play simultaneously, get like 3 tries and the fastest time wins. It would still be a live competition but much fairer. y
Risk, reward, Koryan reaped what he sowed. Somewhere in-between there’s a sweet spot to win this tournament.
@@meditalisoo7 how is that fairer?
That's literally qualifying. Before the main ctwc they all have to go through qualifying, which determines the seating for the tournament. In 2018, they had something like 8 maxouts. Now if everyone just went for the max score there is a fraction of the tension we have now. There is no vs. They would essentially be hosting a world record testing station.
There is a reason why competitive sports don't determine the winner based on the fastest time they did during the whole event but during the race the held.
You completely eliminate the versus effect of the championship doing that. There is no side to side looking, to check how fast your opponent is, thus removing the ability to adjust your game accordingly to the added or reduced pressure.
Which btw Joseph did, multiple times during this video. It even got picket up by the commentators.
If you want to see who is the fastest, Joseph takes that title, who has the highest lvl18 score, i think korean owns it atm (or harry, idk). Highest lvl19 goes to Joseph again. And the best competitive player is atm Joseph, having beat Jonas. Now for this speedrun type of play, idk of Korean actually has a WR but he was the fastest this tournament, but couldn't handle the pressure during the finals thus losing and ending up worst of the 4.
Am I the only one who watches just Joseph's screen.
It feels like a sports anime, and Joseph is the main character.
I only watch him coz I want him to win 😀😀😀
yeah. when i first started watching these videos i couldnt help but only watch joseph’s. his playstyle is so entertaining
same,he’s like the main guy
I was literally just about to comment that... I don't know what it is I just always find myself watching JUST Joseph's screen.
I get so happy when I see a new Tetris video
UwU
I'm a Level 2 Banana
It's so funny that seeing these pro Tetris players misdrops because of slow speed lol
6:10 Woah, where'd Kauser go?
I was fooled by that the entire time. I was so confused why they kept calling Koryan. I can't believe I fell for that.
@@Rose-pv8gr You aren't the only one. Master of disguise.
Xddddddddddddddddddddddddddd equisde lmao
BUT IT WAS I, KORYAN
Fun fact: This guy went from never having played tetris to world champion in less than one fucking year. He's absolutely insane.
is there a championship this kid doesnt win
Yes, the no-next piece championship
@@ZdzichuWiertara96 Unfortunately :[
In the first rounds kauser had the best time overall.
@@danatronics9039 I'm not complaining, I love Koryan and Kauser
It's the championship "how long will you stay virgin?"
10:04 "how excited are you for the tournament (CTWC 2018) this weekend?"
He has no idea he's about to win it two years in a row
The controller held back his potential tbh
was he using a controller he doesn't normally use here?
@@Fopenplop it's a meme, in one of the times he broke a wr, before he set the record he said the controller was holding him back lol
@@Fopenplop It really looks like his controller was having problems, you can mostly see it in the early game where he struggles to accelerate his pieces causing severe misdrops
@@tomodachingu oh lol. i watched that clip
Imagine the upcoming VR eye tracking Tetris. This will be epic.
I love watching classic tetris so much.
Thanks! We appreciate the support.
I only just discovered this channel a few days ago and I love it! Amazing Tetris skills!
Been waiting for this vid, thanks!
Joseph won the Soulja Boy Console =D
still nice to have i guess =)
Not quite. The "GoRetro Portable" that he won has licensed games and is sold through mainstream retailers like Best Buy and GameStop.
apparently it's worth around 30 dollars ... so, yeah.
@2Handsome i wouldn't be either. That's like a 2 euro game lol
I really like the speedrun format it would be great to see more of this.
Joseph is struggling so hard on slow speed :D The man is just built for hyper-speed!
Joseph's young ass causing these early topouts
This was amazing to watch.
Great job Joseph!!!
watching tetris on youtube and twitch has become my life.
You really have to feel for Kauser. He had such a strong lead and was really pushing his own time. I love to see him going for WR.
6:08 30 years
6:10 60 years.
I love seeing Joseph play Tetris just awesome stuff!
00:00 The New Legend Has Born
I love how Joseph's so casual about everything. "Yeah I didn't really prepare for this. These competitors are really great. Yeah."
wow
loved it right away
8:07 When a hyper tapper is surprised on how fast you're moving your pieces you're definitely doing it right.
This is so entertaining 😁
Good win by Joseph, but Koryan proved that he is a dangerous man. I want to see Koryan win next time!
I feel like watching this video 4 times so I can watch every player play one at a time
I feel bad for Alex. I feel like he is a great player, but always just misses out on the top spot.
Didn't he win the Tetris Experience tournament, though?
Tetris Effect, yes.
@@danielkim6304 Ah yes, I couldn't remember the name anymore. Thanks!
Dizzy Jajko then he’s not best of the best
Sad now he can't pay for a shower
Some SUPER close calls towards the end there.
Nice! Congratulation!!!
Next year I'd like to see all the side events before the championship.
Maybe that's how it was done but it'd be nice if they post them in that order.
I think we are in a golden age of tetris right now. As close as many of the game were, Jonas has run away with the competition for nearly a decade, and as large as the tetris community has grown, it almost gets "boring" to see someone dominate for that long a stretch.
But now with Joseph in the mix, I think that this years CTWC will have some of the best games ever. Really hope that one day Thor unretires.
Dizzy Jajko original Tetris god, first guy to max out, and figure out hypertapping.
He was like 12 when all this happened, so he burnt out, and stopped playing.
2:45 lmao those tucks 😂
Joseph is amazing!
WHEN HE SAID “OMG IM NERVOUS” I DIED HES SO CUTE 😂😂😂
I thought Joseph would lose for a moment. Great game, man!
As someone who does not watch this stuff a lot. This is fuckin entertaining.
almost noone realizing that Josephs controller was basically refusing to work and yet he still won... INSANE
I realize that since the players get used to playing dropping down on slower levels, they push down on 18. Kind of cool to see
"Damn, I didn't even practice for this, kinda crazy how I won without even trying" - Joseph, basically
Joseph is amazing. I love this guy!
OMG THAT REALLY WAS KORYAN WTF
okay this speedrun is GG
Why do they keep calling Kouser "Koryan?"
They are saying Korean because hes from Japan
@@telesphoros NO
isn't Koryan the Japanese guy? I super confused why they are doing that.
ooooh that is Koryan. He had a wig on to look like Kauser, and he put his name in as Kauser. I can't believe I got fooled by that.
They called him « kauser » because there were a player named « Hauser » last year
I LOVE TETRIS
While Joseph was talking, I couldn't help but look at the Tetris plushies in the background and want to squeeze them.
Only clicked because Svavar was smiling in the thumbnail
Yup , million dollars smile .
Still nothing compared to Greentea
It *has* to be Photoshop'ed!
This was foreshadowing
Awesome game!!
You got me Kauser i don't even see that guy a young being to oldman in seconds i can't belive
What a game,wow
I was very upset last year when Joseph beat Jonas but watching him play more is amazing, he´s our true champion.
Amazing
Poor kid really didn't know what to say at the end
Wow so intense
Koryan played like a mad man! Big ups to JDmfx on that win tho! Check out other tetris speedruns from Koryan if you want more content like this
I don't even like Tetris (haha I suck at it!)...but thank you for suggesting these videos for me youtube! I'm like 4 or 5 videos into watching Joseph dominate!
9:59 It was necessary to censor that?
lol
The what ???
what joseph say
Up the -consistency-
I think someone still playing Tetris while Joseph talk
i kinda want tetris 99 come to CTWC and see many crazy T-spins and tetris clash
hahaha
just my daydream
Nice job Alex barely losing out to Joseph and thats with quite a few more mis drops as well.but nice win yet again Joseph, guys got a resume like Cassius Clay already at age 16 dang man.
Do I know A N Y T H I N G about Tetris? Nope.
Will I keep watching these? Of course.
These athletes are insane!!!
YEEAAAHHH!! Way to go Joseph!
I don't even like Tetris but I like it when Joseph wins. Ever since he won last year.
8:35 When even Svavar has a "wtf are we gonna do with this kid" look on his face.
They’re all incredible 👍 This is a nice way to have more Tetris, but I like the normal mode most.
Is there a place where you can go read the rules for the different modes?
C'mon Koryan, wtf! This should've been yours
@Ran Ng What? This isn't the NHL or NFL...
Bruh he didn’t care about winning ... he wanted to beat his own record
I'm addicted to this now ._.
Oof, the pace that Koryan had until the mistake was incredible.
each time i see joseph in a newly uploaded vid i already know who’s gonna win 😂
Koryan is extremely fast because of Tetris The Grandmaster
What a great prize for the winner :D I bought the same game console for 5 USD
Man Joseph had many mis-drops in the beginning and he still wins. Almost thought he had a faulty pad like Greentea did.
Oh damn! I can't believe he's out, he was so far ahead :(
He’s going to smash so many Tetris groupies.
Joseph tried his trap to himself at the beginning but he did come back!
Honestly wanted to see Alex win, thought he had a good chance considering his TGM skill.
You won this really cool thing from the $1 store
Clicked so damn fast!
...over 10 times a second?
1:24 Joseph made a t spin set up XD
That prize is just insulting
These people make me realize how much depth there is in tetris lol. And then there is me thinking im good playing HS computre room
