In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 6,000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 20 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next? ecstasyoforder.com thectwc.com - Игры

@Icy Flame Haha, yeah I loved that, great confidence.... which lets face it, he'll need in abundance against Joseph!
Can I just take a second to say I absolutely appreciate the extended time at the end of these videos so it never gives any clues as to who could win at a specific moment, really appreciate that.
Oh is that why they extend it? That's pretty cool.
How would just cutting the video off give hints to who the winner is?
@@benneb4113 The score. If it's say, a match between Dog and Joseph, if Dog is up 2 - 0, and the video ends soon, you can assume Dog wins. not hard
@@fooldiamond5452 but now its just the same with around 20 minutes extension. If Dog is up 2-0 and the vid ends in 30 minutes, its a win for Dog

Batfoy's spins and tucks are just insane. He's definitely gonna be a big shot in classic tetris
His technical ability and foresight reminds me of Jonas and Koryan. Another of my favourites to watch play. High level Tetris is mesmerising to watch anyway but the cerebral choices just makes it that little bit more amazing.
@@byz88 Yep he has potential. I just think right now, or at least in this matchup, he made a few bad decisions, and played too conservatively. That allowed Koryan to increase his lead every time. That can change with experience and growth.
Son of tucks.
@@byz88 His style and technical play are definitely closets to a Jonas at about 80 percent his best/prime, which I still think Jonas is I dont expect what happened this year to ever happen to Jonas again like ever it was a fluke, a legit wein by retroman no doubt theres no cheating or excuses here, but just a likely fact is all for Jonas this year.Batfoy is very good playing monthly tournaments has helped him get better and better this past year.

Holy that was phenomenal
it took way too many replays to notice that holyy
Damn, one u notice it, u can never unsee it... sounds like a sick combo move btw
It is very clear koryan is comming for blood. The way he kept playing level 29 even after batfoy topped out shows he is prepping to take on Joseph.
True, it's like he's telling Joseph that two can play on level 29
Koryan knows the battle will go on to lvl 29 and on
And he lost
Koryan deserves to win a championship. He's very persistent. Joseph is very good and has an enviable technique. But I'm going to root for Koryan.
He doesn't win :l
@@ichikasimp6479 It's really a difficult task. I have nothing against Joseph, is that I really admire Koryan's position in all these years. Koryan is persistent and loyal. Another I really liked in the last championships of 2018 and 2019 was Greentea. He made some exciting recoveries. First let's see if he goes through Batfoy...

batfoy has an interesting style of stacking high on the left instead of keeping the field more leveled like most players
I was just thinking about how he seems to be really comfortable with getting the playing field really dirty. He doesn't mind doing cleanup at all in setting up his Tetris. And he doesn't seem to care _where_ the cleanup has to happen in his stack, so long as he has a Tetris set up. I can see how he got this far. He's bold, but I can see how it could really not work in the future, too. Very interesting to watch.
It’s Xerxes it’s actually really good because you don’t have to worry about getting stuff over
@@SodiumOverdose true its very conservative style but it kinda shows in his points when he was behind almost the whole time since he wasnt tetris ready most of the time
@@itsxerxes6754 His system looks like it was optimized to prevent the most early top-out RNG outcomes for a DAS player of his skill set. It honestly looks quite rounded. But it also seems to make him use a lot of single lines to burn instead of mixing in doubles and triples, and looks like the system has low tolerance for mistakes.
koryan finally got there, sadly it took batfoy as sacrifice
Koryan is a great player but I feel like I'm constantly learning new things watching batfoy play. His stacking strategy is just so different from all the other players like Jonas and Joseph.
my eyes: batfoy
my brain: *malfoy*
back after a short five days break
Batfoy plays with a ton of emotion 😎, he should think about becoming a pro poker player.
I was 100% expecting to see the final match today. Been following this series all week. And sure enough, it ain't there. What's up CTWC?!?!?
What a match-up
Youngest vs oldest player
been waiting all day for this
I’m watching this completely wasted, so much fun! Thank you guys!
Batfoy is really interesting to watch, his moves and set ups and tucks and spins are quite unique. I think if Koryan learned added these to his repituor he'd be unbeatable. But that said batfoy makes more mistakes, and even early on in each round Koryan ends up with a 60000 point lead because he's Tetris ready again before batfoy so often
Much respect for Batfoy. Hope he continues to play and come back next year.
My body is ready for this final! Awesome match!
Koryan is so comfortable now, Completely in the zone!
Going to be some records broken in the final!

@@jundies171 why did that make me laugh
Naw What about harry?
Yo BoZo pfft
Kauser has it for sure!
You can just tell how skilled Koryan is. You can see many instances of him changing his mind on where the piece is going to go judging on the next piece; he has a good ability to think ahead with the next piece and execute his last second change. Not many players can do this the way Koryan can, at least not that I've noticed.
Love watching these videos and the energy of the commentary is awesome “BOOM TETRIS FOR BATFOY/KORYAN!”
incredible performance from both. crazy overall performance this year
20:02 i think koryan wanted a high five but batfoy just ignored it lol
it was a thumbs up, you can see it when his hand comes back down
Gotta love how (when using headpones) the sounds of the right screen comes from the right earphone and the right from the right!
Amongst the cutest and the most wholesome ☺️ BATFOY!

"Koryan got Teturisuu!!"
I hope Koryan takes this one. He deserves to win one of these..
I'm looking forward to see more of Batfoy. I love his tucks.
3:25 you the man batfoy
That dig from batfoy in the first game, that was absolutely rough, and he managed to handle it so well
And seeing him smile could make anyones day
Batfoy need to work on his piece placement. Seems like he's always digging instead of getting the tetris's he needs to win
yes. but its a function of experience in time play, mostly (exceptions of amazing spatial intuition to see the patterns) which means time - and he is still so young. I agree, and it will improve. you can see double side well that can be plugged sooner by the next long bar, that he doesnt fill up, and keeps left stacking a lot.
I feel like his biggest problem is that he doesn't play aggressively enough to compete with players like Koryan. That's how I felt watching the match.
@@micahman10001 yea but to do that you still need a more solid foundation of moves to make a stack full as fast as possible, so it'd the same situation and issue to improve
The issue seems that he covers the right well and places some pieces on top of it. And then doesn’t go for centre or left wells even if the the opportunity is there. This is when he starts to stop catching up.
@@AbhishekPatelab9 he's also too tuck reliant, he sets up tucks too much like he is going for a pb, not good in a tournament setting
Man I'm so amazed at this community how friendly and positive it is.
That was the quietest semifinal of a CTWC I've ever watched. Both semifinals at the same time like back in 2017 should be better...
the commentators were like they wanted to sleep after the best match ever Joseph vs Greentea.
That was a quarterfinal aswell too bad they had to play so early
It's not the commentators' fault. Joseph-GreenTea was the kind of battle you reference years, if not decades, later. It takes a special kind of mutual skill, in ANY sport, for any two competitors to jump up and hug each other after a round/set/period because they both did something so awesome it had never been seen before.
By contrast, each defeated semifinalist never really felt like they had much chance after the first five minutes. They're both really good, don't get me wrong, but Koryan was a bit of bad RNG away from a sweep, and Joseph led Dan by absurd margins.
Frankly, I'm surprised the commentators didn't both immediately reach for a smoke after that match.
but the final was really good
it IS inspiring to see TWO teenage semifinalists making their debut in the CTWC. great games from both of them.
6:20 damn that perfect staircase on koryan's side
Seems like stacking technique has most to do with who plays better. Things like DAS vs hypertapping are of secondary importance
True, it doesnt affect who plays better, but hypertapping lets players move more quickly so they can last longer, and higher on the board. But with that said DAS and hypertapping lead to different staking techniques
Agree. Joseph beat most of his components when they got trapped by bad RNG while his layout welcomed all different possibilities. Although DAS players need to burn earlier, Batfoy was too conservative, burned too often, and frequently blocked his well or stacked upon a hole, leading to more cleaning. If he improves on the stacking, he will become the new audience favorite with his composure beyond his age and the flamboyant spins and tucks.
The thing is, stacking looks visually important while hypertapping and DAS are going on behind the scenes and may not be noticeable unless you look closely; despite there importance.
@@mkboss6144 Yeah you are right but also Greentea for example, who is a DAS player was very tough competition for Joseph while some other hypertappers didn't do as well.
But yeah maybe in the future when the competition gets tougher and the edges narrower there will only be hypertappers and maybe a few odd DAS players who are very skilled stackers...remains to be seen I guess.
So much this. I've been saying this over and over again. Hypertapping is only useful for last second decisions, or for playing with a higher stack. It does NOT determine who will win a match. Joseph is so great at this game because he's good at building and maintaining the stack, being Tetris ready almost always and under pressure (ie when his stack gets dangerously high) he almost always finds a (near) perfect solution to burn down the stack.
Look at Richard, for example. Imo he taps even faster than Joseph, but he's too inconsistent with his stack building, constantly runs into line dependencies and building spirals, whereas Joseph manages to get his stack free from such dependencies (most of the time).
Not to mention that hypertapping is very stressful for your hands. So, the longer a tournament lasts, the more tired hypertappers will grow. Might(!) become a problem if the field gets even bigger, or they start doing best of 5 a round earlier.
30 seconds into the first match and it was already more exciting than the previous match between Joseph and DanQZ
The legendary battle again, Joseph vs Koryan
Where's the video of the final match!? I can't wait!
I love NES tetris! But this tournament should be open and double bracket (you need to lose 2 times to be eliminated). Ask James Chen about this, he is part of the fighting game community and they use open, double brackets in their tournaments. The tournament will have to be spread out over the entire weekend but this will help the CTWC grow even more!
Batfoy's burns are galaxy brain
Love this so much
KORYAN seemed like a proud papa after BATFOY beat him in the second round!
i like how everyone in this Tetris community is so friendly and respectful
Lol watch when someone unknown gets WR. It gets toxic too

In case anyone was wondering, they didn't make it very clear in the stream.

Yes!! Joseph vs. Koryan rematch for all the marbles!! Oh, this is gonna be a great championship match!! 😁😁
Koryan is definitely my favorite. But Batfoy is very entertaining to watch his spins are some of the best
Kinda annoyed the final is not up yet
Yo, where is the final?
Batfoy is a model in why smart, safe, and consistent play is the best strategy in the early rounds.
His early round opponents pressed for big scores and topped out early, and Batfoy just said "thank you very much" and advanced without taking any chances.
It didn't work against a player at the top like Koryan though. I can't blame Batfoy though, his only real chance was for Koryan to make some unforced errors.
Can't wait to see what Batfoy does when he gets more experience under his belt.
GO KORYAN
Batfoy made such a show, i love it

WTF...It's 26th of november(EVENING) (in europe) and the final is nowhere...
Just one question. What if Batfoy takes it serious next year and trains more than 2 weeks? ... Amazing talent...
Koryan loves to play on that first round on level 18. It was a nice way to play too with Batfoy on their first round
Batfoys antics are bad for the game. He is just too wild and all over the place.
EDIT: Just look at 19:23 Batfoy is going crazy with his reaction!!!!
Yeah, he really needs a lesson in tournament etiquette from Quaid.

Does anybody know the music playing in the background during the end of the last round?
Gotta love seeing a guy who lives less than an hour away from me making it to semis
I honestly want James Chen and Chris Tang as the announcers for everything now. They seem so good at it
Also, Koryan is a hybrid DAS-Tapper! That’s awesome
where is the video for the finals?
Turn captions on 2:00
earn it looks like and there it is boom hoodie on got Julia soon
Finals will be a high scoring game. It must be.
Batfoy kind of reminds me of Jonas's play two+ years ago. Maybe his builds are slightly less clean but Batfoy just plays safe, burns early, only goes for tetrises when it's completely safe and basically never dies. The problem is, in the era of Joseph that's not good enough anymore. In the final game, after he realised that he's playing too passive to match Koryan, he tried to ramp up the aggression and topped out.
rare to see young DAS players
Are they going to upload the finals?
please post finals.....
I love tetris!
