In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 6,000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 20 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next? ecstasyoforder.com thectwc.com - Игры
the match referee doesnt get enough credit for his tetris countdowns what a cool guy
Made it a point to tell Dorion how I appreciated his good countdowns. Kept me on my toes to make sure I did as well with mine for top 8!
@@CRISHTANG great that they get the appreciation they deserve !!
It must have took years of training.
Heather and Vandweller are excellent commentators, their tetris love and knowledge really elevates the commentary. I love how insightful it is, like when they comment on how the pieces the players are getting affects their stack, what pieces the players are looking for, piece dependencies, background information about the players, etc.
Heather is the best commentator hands down. Vandy is too lovable. These guys deserve main stage next year.
Couldn't agree more. I also like that they didn't describe the specifics of what was going on over on the main stage match ups.
@@IvanEedle They really are, unfortunately because of the beyond horrible tragedy that happened in January I have a feeling Heather will not be returning to the scene for a very long time if ever again, and if so I cant blame her yah know, cant even imagine what she's going through this year.
I’m loving how deep the talent level is at this year’s CTWC. That said, the quality of play in some of the matches has been underwhelming, considering how good these players are. Everybody seems fixated on maxout pace, and it’s leading to lots of overly-aggressive play, precarious stacking, and early top-outs.
Chad-Trey is a clear example of this: a match between two tournament veterans that ended before it really had a chance to start.
Exact comment I came to make. 100% spot on.
Your right, that explains it, all of them arent even beat by "hyper tappers" and etc, there changing there styles and beating themselves, hope they learn next year to just be themselves cause the vets are just as good as they ever been ya know.
I guess it's just a consequence of tournament play and the overall quality of players this year; players obviously feel they need to score big and that is only exacerbated if they end up losing the first game.
Jeff needs to bring his lucky headphones next time.

It's quite discouraging, all the veterans getting knocked off...
I think they should divide the players like the football leagues. Under 18s or under 21s etc.
@@VintageExplorer666 no way
Yes way :-) imagine the veterans league, the over 40's lol
@@VintageExplorer666 yes but Koryon is over 40. So if your divisions were in place the amazing world championship finals matchup we had this year wouldn't take place.
I assume Jonas is over 40, you mean to say he wouldn't get a shot at dethroning Joseph? The majority of vets are over 40. They wouldn't get a chance to compete with the young guns?
Very true. I didnt think this through at all lol.
Does Jeff get a cut of those shirts? I've always been curious.
I'm curious too, but probably not, after all Jeff isn't a trade mark or something like that.
@@vladimir4614 Someone's face doesn't need a trademark, it already belongs to them. You could say faces/voices are automatically trademarked to their owners. He would have had to approve the use of his likeness and at that stage would have had a chance to negotiate any cut.
@@IvanEedle this makes me wonder about all the celebrity memes that come out, wouldn't that also beg the question as to who actually owns the rights to those? Like someone else made them but are using their likeness too. Holy hell this can o worms...
Either he gets a cut or he could have a good lawsuit to file.

I actually wanted to keep track of this simul-build streak so we have a starting point for finding the record but I'm immediately faced with the question of does it count if two pieces are the same and they go in the same place but in a different order? Cause technically this one is broken immediately
May I ask, please?
In top 8 round, are the players will still play against their left or right side players? Or cross over the other side?
Suppose Joseph in the next round and Green Tea win in the next 2 rounds and become top 8. Are they going to compete with each other or cross over to the right side players?
I wish they show more detail on the bracket chart. Or maybe I missed this information that the commentators already talked about.
I think the bracket is clear. Joseph 'could' play in the last 8.
Don't think complicated.
Don't recommend channel To answer your question, yes, Joseph and Greentea would play each other in that scenario. Players only play the player across from them in the bracket once it’s the top 4.
I see Jeff, I click
BOOOOOMMM, tetris for Jeff!!!
Glad to see some modern tetris rep from microblizz
Jeff forever and ever the king of tetris
There aren't any tetris players just people Jeff allow them to play the game

We want to hear: BOOOM TETRIS FOR JEFFF, BOOOOM BOOOOM...
that first match was just incredible.
What does the blue graph at the end of a game mean?
Drought statistic
I am not sure but I think it’s the height of the player’s stack at each level transition up to level 18. At 19, each level is a different color.
I think it’s the number of points they scored at each level? Not sure though.
@@chrisray1567 i think youre right. Drought statistic already show on the text above the blue box..
It's points scored per line clear. You can see Trey's blue bar getting smaller and smaller to the right in the first game? That's where he tried to survive and only took singles.
They use different colors for the other levels.
Boom
Hi, why is this done on score? I hopped into the Twitch channel as an outsider to this stuff when it was live and it was unwatchable because I had no knowledge of what to look for or what was going on.
Hi! The players get the exact same pieces, play the game at the same time, and the higher score wins. Usually one opponent will top out and the other player either has the lead already or tries to chase down the required points to win. It's best of 3 games until the quarterfinals, when it changes to best of 5 games.
Lol you didn't answer my question though, why is it done on score and for example not on tetrises?
@@aBetterMove It kind of does come down to who gets more Tetrises, since those give way more points than single, double, or triple line clears. And the basic reason why it's based on score? NES Tetris doesn't have a built-in versus mode. In versus Tetris, your line clears will send garbage to your opponent's screen - Gameboy Tetris, SNES Tetris, and Puyo Puyo Tetris are examples of this. But NES Tetris doesn't have that mode, so this tournament is based on score.
3:02 I wish I still lived in a time when I didn't knew what an "upper decker" was. :(
Im..scared to ask lol.
jeff game 1 had me sick

why do they leave the endscreen up for like half the video

Jeff lost because his post transition game is lacking. That's why he is keeping the stack so low with all these burns. If he holds out for a Tetris like is he supposed to he will top out quickly like we saw in game 3.
Work on your post transition game Jeff.
I think it's because he didn't have his lucky headphones
does anyone else get the vibe that heather is lowkey annoyed by vandweller?
Vandweller was a great commentary partner, and he was 100% the stream overlay hero.
Real talk? I was getting more and more anxious about Jonas's upcoming match... and then I was super shook when they put his match on the main stage. Last year they had promised to send his early matches to the side stage so that I could see them, and I assumed that would happen again. And then knowing that Jonas also expected the side stage, and would also be caught off-guard...yeah, I just did my best to keep it together. Sorry, lots of words. TL;DR: Vandweller is great.
Heather Ito Didn’t the side stage stream on Jonas’ channel last year?
@@fishflake1209 Yeah, it was their first year with the capabilities to stream/record the side station matches and they didn't have the ClassicTetris2 account yet so they asked if they could use our channel.
Not even a little actually no.
