In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 6,000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 20 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next? ecstasyoforder.com thectwc.com - Игры

Seriously dude making us wait an entire month wow sad
Nice Split
WTF, is this a joke? You would deserve all subs unsub..
And this right here is why I made sure to watch it live this year. Ugh.
This is a terrible schedule.
Note: Chat is full of spoilers. If you don't want to know the result until the end, I recommend you keep it closed.
Edit: I didn't even talk about my own thoughts, oops. So many of these Round 0 rounds went down to the wire, and it's becoming even more difficult to keep up now. It's great to see even these early rounds go the distance. Double kill screens in Round 0? Before, we wouldn't see that happen! Amazing how much changes in a single year of preparation.
Joseph was the Champion, right ?
I dont understsand why they didnt make It Go live on RUclips before
@@humbleman9 Wish I had an answer for why the uploads aren't done immediately.
And yes, Joseph did win it all last year. This year is his battle to retain the crown.
THANK YOU!
@@skylar9046 I think that they release it bit by bit so maybe people who did not watch it live can watch and enjoy it slowly? But I suppose they could choose that themselves, maybe they want to edit the videos somehow.
Where is Jonas you noob.
Credit where it's due: MegaRetroMan called out Jonas, and walked the walk.
With so many players from all over the world at CTWC, I feel it would be great if Trey or whomever can get nationality flags on the heads-up-display for each player. And when we see the brackets with all the players, having the flags there as well. :)
I am unsure how the social response is to this idea. But most sports do feature nationality flags beside player names. :)
Michael Compton I was wondering that same thing during the tournament. I’ll make sure to bring it up to Adam/Trey/Vince.
That's a good idea
USA will be overrepresented, unfortunately. It will be like baseball's "World Series."
Then what if they added in state flags to try and divvy up the representation of the USA and get some state pride for CA/NY/wherever else?
They already do that in CTM, it has a high level of competition too. First Saturday of each month. You'll get to see many of the stars from CTWC, plus many players you won't see there.
OMG, I don't know what it is about Jonas rooting for Michael at 14:46, but it made me feel as if I were right there, among the crowd, rooting for him as well. That was incredible, heart-warming sportsmanship.
It was insane dude!! I loved it. I’m Michael btw
@@Shallowweb Having someone like Jonas rooting for you isn't something that happens every day... Man, you were so close! I'm looking forward to seeing you on the top bracket next year, go for it! ;D
Adrián González I really hope so! It was an absolute blast.
Great Job MegaRetroMan!(I’m Michael) This CTWC was off the charts!!
Great play in the second game man! I was clenching my cheeks at that finish. It's unfortunate that the win didn't happen, but I'm eager to see you play more!
Wasabi Junior Me too! The nerves definitely got to me a bit 😅 I just want to finally get in a maxout sometime this year. My highscore is 837k, so I think it’s possible.
You did fantastic. This year was definitely something else. Keep it up, and hope to see you again next year.
Paul 'Mega RetroMan' Tesi Yeah you too! I’m after you Paul ;)
Hey wassup I was rooting for you fyi
I'm glad I got to watch this live on Twitch. Jonas brought a lot of hype for the start of the 2019 CTWC. I wish I could meet him in person.
Jonas brought so much joy in my life and he will be missed.
That little girl shouting "BOOM" each tetris was so cute
It got real annoying real fast...
@Mind Control Experiments ok
@Mind Control Experiments be nice
This year I am cheering for Jonas, seeing all the work he puts in and his attitude towards the game, he deserves to be the eternal Tetris champion. Green tea's positivity is also super infectious.
@@TCYlol yeah go ahead and just spoil it for him
@@Heppsxd It was already spoiled on their website.
Well considering not everyone reads the website and waits for the RUclips videos, yeah that was a dick move and you know it. I feel sorry for you.
Oh my god my heart goes out to Michael, he was doing okay but both times the stress of everyone watching him I think got to him
MegaRetroMan is the heel that Classic Tetris needs
Jonas puts MegaRetroMan over by jobbing to him. What a class act.
"Heel-Face Turn" next year confirmed!
Note: if you see the ad saying to go to Tetris.com, there is a CTWC spoiler on the frontpage
With this ridiculous YT release schedule, you will get the results spoiled well before they air.
4:35 best moment of the round. That guy in the audience is a hero.
Quaid’s usually the one who shouts things, but that doesn’t sound like him.
I love the new music. Perfect fit! Well done guys!
Arda Ocal and Chris Bidwell are the BEST Tetris commentators EVER!!!
15:40 BUUUUUCOOOOOOOO!
Why does that never get old lmao
It's crazy watching the zero matches. They'd beat me up and down for sure. But it gives you a true sense of the gap between them and Koryan, Joseph, Jonas, etc.
Rooted for Stacy, but then noticed Chris's next competitor... :) Leave behind every hope, you who enter!
Damn the competition is incredible and this is just round zero.
I'm a new sub as of today. I absolutely love Tetris!
I may be half an hour late but it’s time to kick back and relax and watch some Tetris
Awww, yeahhh...!
This is exactly what I was waiting for. Now, let the "blockbath" begin...
Yes! Finally I get to (re)watch the matches. I try to not spoil anything, but it's going to be very intense! And I also will give out a spoiler warning for all my comments (or at least I try to), so don't read them if you don't know the outcome yet. I will also try to hide the rest of the comments behind the "show more" button.
Don't know if this will be mentioned in the video (I'm typing as I watch it) but you needed over 690k to even qualify for round 0. Gin Morgan had a score of like 660k and didn't make the cut. Stacey had a score of 7xxk and had to play in round 0. This is insane!
I absolutely enjoy how much fun the players have on stage. Megaretroman playing with the audience, reacting to the commentary, Quaid just chatting away up on stage (he also had a nice chat during qualifiers with Jeff, seemed like both did concentrate more on the talking than on the game, lol). Maybe they should just equip him with a microphone next year, haha.
Too bad match 3 between Chris and Stacey ended so early. Stacey with a few unfortunate mistakes (not trying to sound condescending here, I can't even reach level 19 consistently from a level 18 start, my PB on NES Tetris is something like 260k, so there you go). At 34:44 that line piece needs to go in column 7, so the T piece can clear two lines, OR the T piece needs to go in column 5, so the L piece can be placed better. But again, this is easy to say if you are just a spectator, it's a whole different thing to see this when you are up on stage. If I had to play in front of an audience I propably wouldn't even manage to get a single line in level 18.
Alex looks younger every year. If he came up to me and told me he just turned 18, I would believe him...
If i'm not mistaken, Stacy was the player to rotating the pieces only one way at the last year's world championship, right? Looks like she practiced to rotate only the correct direction.I was in the same shoes BTW, and when i decided to get used to the correct rotation ,i improoved like crazy.
I have the same ploblem. Always make triple flips. And it's now very hard to stop doing that.
Nightcore what made it easy for me to change from one direction to two directions is that one makes it spin left. One makes it spin right. Might sound obvious but after I figured out which button spins the piece which way, it was easy to play that way
@@TheWerar08 I can play correctly on my calculator, but I can only spin 1 way on PC
Yeah! She was like Dana Wilcox, also an early ctwc competitor, but when she switched to both buttons and after 5 years of practice, Dana got her first maxout in 2015. Heard Stacy has also maxed out but not sure though?!
Maxouts are cool, but Brady’s game 2 post-19 dig was one for the ages. Epic.
16:11 me at 3am walking over to the fridge for some shredded cheese
This is round 0 and we have seen kill screens already. No wonder why David will say this will be the toughest year in his video.
btw to the comment reviewer I sincerely suggest a discord server so it will be convenient for players to stream and audience to enjoy and engage in the community
I just learned that Arda Ocal is a popular announcer! No wonder he is so great!
Joseph Is The 🐐 ™️
I watched most of this streamed, but the stream kept going offline, so it's nice to be able to set some of these matches after all :)
16:10 "
I'm going to go to porridge so that nobody sees me ..."
QUAID!! It's so beautiful!
Here we go... Tetris for Jeff...
Jeffris for Tet
Booooooomcoooooo!
I dont remember who did the perfect clear. was it round zero or was it one of the qualifier rounds? If anyone could remember, please let me know! thank you so much in advance!
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what exactly is "Round 0"? What does that mean?
So due to the sheer amount of people qualifying, they extended the bracket to 48 instead of 32. Those who got top 16 in qualifying automatically go to the top 32 bracket held the following day. Those who did not make the cut must play in a round 0 which happened the same day as qualifying. The winners move to top 32. Hope that helped. I was one of the refs at the event.
Bottom 16 seeds have a chance to move into the top 32. The first match of top 32 is the "official" Round 1.
@@bballer99133 🙌
Eris didn't have time to rest and prepare. He's one of the last batch in qualifying and he had to play immediately for round 0
Matthew Bluefox your mean comment was still unnecessary. you could say that about many players in the tournament, jonas included. you can‘t play perfect games all the time
Matthew Bluefox but you‘re saying it like eris would have to excuse his perfomance.
Who did the perfect clear ? And it was in qualy or round zero? Dont remember
I remember that too. Wasn't it even both players getting a perfect clear? Was it on Tetris Mind Meld? Hmm....
the music choices this year are absolute rippers
12:03 Smooth!
why four players one screen? very difficult to keep track of one match when you have to monitor four players at same time.
The hype!
2:12 code word for danger, if you know you know
wow michael is really good, the pressure definitely got to him
15:36 Loudest ''Bucoooo'' ever?
Me at the beginning: Ugh, random hell...
Me at 1:12: Woah, hold on, you REALLY listened to fans and abandoned that idea of randomized gameplays? Nice.
Yeah, that round 2 match between Stacy and Chris was amazing. You can clearly see how much Stacy upgraded her skills, to be able to hold onto kill screen, DAMN!
Excuse me, but what happened with the end of the Alex-Reed duel?
Can anyone tell me what the title of the endscreen music is? :x From 35:35 to 37:50 It sounds so nice :D
WHOOP TETRIS!!
13:30 the way Michael was building he would've topped out if you didnt warn him about a 40 piece drought, playing slow like that is a good strat
Hi to all. We know for sure these videos will go viral in a couple of days.
can anyone tell me if they can see each other's screens and points during these games?
7:08 jake is such a poker player lmao
Stacy is a baddie and sick at Tetris *phew*
I watch these vids almost daily to try & improve
You would only have to hit up to 11 cards if it were all aces, right? Not 21 since aces can be 1 or 11!
Jeff Moore 🤩
What does it mean that Jonas is his last time on the microphone? IS HE LEAVING???????
Carelessness is the way to death.
Joseph is the new king of NES Tetris
Felix Hild if he’s the god, why did he lose in round 1?
Felix Hild jk
@@ottovonbismarck7779 Because he choked, from spending the entire year not competing in tournaments. He can play amazing tetris in his living room, but it means nothing under pressure.
@@Ayatron34 Joseph competes in the Classic Tetris Monthly events to keep his skills sharp, so you're not exactly right. He goes up against the likes of Koryan still, and I think their two Best of 5 rounds were split between them.
@@skylar9046 I was talking about Jonas.
21:37 Stacy needs a what now?? xD
What are the people with notepads taking notes on after games? W/L?
The judges were writing down the scores of the games. The losing scores are used to determine the final ranking at the end of the tournament.
Do not scrolleth further, only spoilers fill yonder.
was there a live stream? i didnt see it...
Yes but I heard they removed the videos on Twitch. I watched them a while ago.
Im coming in late as I watch this on RUclips but im curious to see how mega retro handles level 19 against Jonas as his 18 game is on point but 19 seems to possibly be nerves. Interesting considering he presses down.....Im rooting for the guy in the past from my DeLorean. Jonas is awesome too. Cant wait to watch it.
Quaid! Quaid! Quaid!
Commenters missed this amazing moment from Lars 30:10
I missed it the first time, too. Can't watch 4 screens at once. Had to back and watch again. Great effort there.
Has anyone else here been practising NTSC Tetris?
I dont find time to play every day but so far my personal best is;
Lvl 15, 244800,
Lvl 18 139080,
Im still very inconsistent.
where's hauser?
I miss the days of watching adults play Tetris.
Jake looks like Jon Favreau when he was a bit younger.
It's so annoying that the commentators spoil the other matches...they do it every year too!
im not homo but michael look so clean
For real tho
31:20 quiad is so bully
So...nobody gonna say anything about 47 lines drought on Eris...okay...6:34
Lezgooo
heather is so much better at commentating tho
stacy has gotta be the best female player in the world
@Matthew Bluefox Does she have a stream as well?
ChrissyFordTwitch is much better (if the player is female). This player qualified this month's CTM, let's see how it shakes out!
@Matthew Bluefox I hope he makes people pay for being able to say "BOOM! Tetris for Jeff" in the chat. :D
Stacy seems like the type of person who gets pissed if you make a joke
... I kind of miss the drunk European Championship crowd.
15:20 who else thought micheal was raging 🤔
He thought he won, but he realized he barely lost and then gave MegaRetroMan a handshake with good sportsmanship
If MegaRetro can play level 19 to 28 well, I think he Will be the Strong competitor.
Stacey could have done so much better on 19+ but she had constant unnecessary burns, like she was afraid to go higher than 3-4 lines.
Thing is, one mistake can mean you top out early on that speed. If you are not going for a maxout, it's best to play defensively.
@@wohlhabendermanager - i agree, it's almost impossible to recovery from a 19+ misdrop. It doesn't matter though because she would have been up against Joseph anyway 😂
@@mikea5205 Maybe Joseph would've been distracted...? 😏
Don't want to come off weird or harass-y but Stacy's got the hot librarian vibe on lock
Where’s the part where Jonas gets eliminated? Or is that round 1?
Yes, that was Round 1.
they're surprising the players!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the commentators are so distracting and they're not even helpful with making descriptions
Eeezzzz
Little girl now, future Tetris champion
Jesus Stacy is a beast
She's average at best. Doesn't really deserve even the 32nd seed.
@@kjohn5224 What do you mean "doesn't deserve"? She qualified for the 32nd seed. How can someone who qualifies for the spot "not deserve it"? That doesn't make sense.
@@wohlhabendermanager K John is just still pissed off she rejected his invite to the Fall Formal.
WoW, i just wanted to ask, why the h*ll takes weeks every year to start upload the world championship vids?! Slow uploading speed?:)
MrKelso82 why can’t it be streamed live? Probably would increase interest in event. The final on November 26th! That is bullshit
bltvd It was streamed live on Twitch. With RUclips, they edit the videos which takes time.
@@bltvd Agreed, but i give a sh*t about live stream, its good in here to share the recorded event in different vids, but not this way. It is complete BS..If Someone want the experience lasts longer, then he should watch them slower. I mean 1 vid/day or whatever.
Aside from rewatching it being a fun experience, it's another avenue of revenue. They want you to subscribe to the Twitch channels to get access to the VODs in advance.
@@pollsmor I can watch the Twitch VODs (albeit full - not split) without being subbed. I don't see your point.
michael could have won if he played it safe... twice in a row
Megaretro vs Jonas in the next round. No way he gets the upset!
“And Megaretroman is signaling to Jonas saying, ‘You’re next, pal.’”
What a guy.
Except he does.

Girl in the jacket behind Jonas. O_o so pretty
16:23 Bisexual shaming.
It spoils the competition when they say what happens on the side stage. So stupid
Not a fan of these commentators. Nothing interesting to say, there were times when they missed important things (like a topout) and they spolied the other matches being played at the same time. Probably no reason to watch part 2 of round zero because they told us who went through.
That girl is so annoying screaming the background
Absolutely atrocious commentary. DisAPPOINTed.
"I think we need to buy the CTWC commentators a thesaurus. They keep using the same terms over and over."
The booms have become obnoxious and overdone. They really need to end.
I end up muting the commentators and just play some music instead.
Can you do something as obvious as in any tennis tournament? The draw should be VERY clear but not the one you have. And can you have TWO damn players at the screen, not four? It is not even virtually possible to follow four players. And do not even show us that stacy after showing Jonas, Korean, Joseph, Jeff, GreenTea, Retro, and other tops please!
