Most people don't notice at first, including me, but when the predator blasted Arnold after Poncho dies, it mostly hits Arnold's gun. If you watch it again the gun breaks into two pieces and the blast wave puts him on his ass. That's why he is only slightly injured, probably from shrapnel. Also, the narrative of the movie came full circle when Arnold goes after the predator. You'll notice that after the predator gets wounded by the first arrow it begins shooting in all directions. That was what the green berets did before the predator wiped them out because they couldn't see it. Arnold completely turned the tables.

What Billy was doing cutting his own chest was actually an ancient act of defiance found in multiple cultures. By cutting himself, he was denying his enemy the privilege of drawing first blood. He knew he was going to die, so he chose to go out on his terms fighting, not running. That's why the Predator took Billy's spine and skull. It was so impressed that he chose to go out that way that he considered him the best trophy possible.

Before CGI, they had to be tricky about what they showed because most of the practicals looked bad if you kep them onscreen too long.. An unintended consequence was that there was mystery and the opportunity for the audience to use their imagination to fill in the blanks or even imagine things that never appeared on screen.
Early CGI was so expensive that the filmmakers would use the same tricks of showing flashes of an effect, with the same results.
Once cgi got cheap, they started showing too much and it ruined the ability for the audience to use their imagination.
I hope they figure this out someday and turn film back into both a visual and imaginative medium.

@@DocMicrowave The spaceship part was too much and it ruined a huge part of the mystery about the movie. The first half of the movie was an old fashioned 80s macho flick and the audience would have been caught off guard once the hand holding scorpion scene came up. The fact that it showed the ship drop at the beginning pretty much already told the audience that an alien is involved early on. That's the one flaw I believe this movie has in storytelling. Predator is an example of a film working with the "less is more" approach to filmmaking. The film was so superbly directed and written and well-acted that the viewer can figure out for themselves key plot points and relate to the characters and the Predator without exposition or over-explanation. There's a ton of non-dialogue scenes by necessity since the commandos need to be stealth so as not to give away their position. So the film relies heavily on the non-verbal acting and reactions by the actors, all of whom excelled in this movie.

I remember walking to the school bus with a buddy who saw it with me, and he kept looking in the trees, all scared, lol! Love the lore and had a bunch of the comics (Pred fought everyone; Batman, Superman, Terminator, Aliens and more; so many crossovers). Hawkins (soldier with glasses) is Shane Black who directed The Predator (which is strangely not good). Claude Van Damn was the original Pred (different alien, bug looking costume) but got fired and replaced by Kevin Peter Hall (who was bigfoot in Harry and the Hendersons). Minigun guy is Jesse the Body Ventura. Theory on Billy is he is a decendant of the tribe from Prey (don't think it was confirmed but would be a perfect tie in).

Just like the classic Alien, the ambiguity of the origin of the creatures is part of the mystique. If you ask alot of people who are fans of the original alien/s and predator movies, alot of the charm was from the mystery of it all. You tend to lose something when you over-explain and reveal all the details of something that was only enjoyable BECAUSE of its mystique.
I like Prometheus in a few ways, but it really didn't need to be an Alien prequel-origin story at all. It was better when we didn't know what or where they came from, much scarier as a horror plot device imo.
Same with The Thing, it works so well because you have no idea what the hell the beastie is or where it came from.

and i'd perhaps go a bit further and say that in addition to the mystery (or before the origin was spoon-fed to us), I like the potential that this was just an alien species that we simply happened to stumble across and it proceeded to devastate us. that really contributes the feeling of dread stemming from the simple fact that no matter how much we think we know, there's always something else that we don't. it also staggers the imagination if you consider that these things would have had to evolve acid for blood, and the ability to gestate inside another living host. imagine the conditions on its own homeworld if it had to do that in order to survive. i find that so much more interesting that simply saying "oh, these things were designed to kill us."

    "You're hit, man. You're bleedin'."
"I ain't got time to bleed."
    "Oh... okay."
Fun Fact: Theatrical film debut of Jesse Ventura and Shane Black.
Don't Drink It Fact: The Predator's (Kevin Peter Hall) blood - a goopy substance with the color of Mountain Dew - was made on-set using a mixture of the liquid from inside glow sticks and KY Jelly.
Practical Joke Fact: Jesse Ventura was delighted to find out from the wardrobe department that his arms were one inch bigger than Arnold Schwarzenegger's. He suggested to Schwarzenegger that they measure arms, with the winner getting a bottle of champagne. Ventura lost, because Schwarzenegger had told the wardrobe department to tell Ventura that his arms were bigger. You're going to have to get up much earlier in the day to get one over a professional practical joker.
Practical Effect Fact: The invisibility cloaking effect was achieved with a bright red suit (because it was the farthest opposite of the green of the jungle and the blue of the sky) the size of the Predator (Kevin Peter Hall). The red was removed with chroma key techniques, leaving an empty area. The take was then repeated without the actors using a 30% wider lens on the camera. When the two takes were combined optically, the jungle from the second take filled in the empty area. Because the second take was filmed with a wider lens, a vague outline of the alien could be seen with the background scenery bending around its shape.

I'm a sixty year old movie buff. I literally grew up in a theater house. Meaning my father owned two movie theaters. The first was a huge single screen Drive In theater in South West Texas. It was called the Winter Garden Theater. And he mostly showed, what im those days were X-rated movie. Now they are all reclassified as Rated R.
Then we moved to Austin in 1969 and he purchased the Harlem Theater. It was a single screen indoor theater that proudly displayed on an outside wall that we had air conditioning!
So I grew up watching movies. And Yes watching the same movie over and over again ever two or three hours every single day, sometimes for two or three weeks. Got pretty old. Especially when the movie sucked! There was no HBO, no Internet and only three channels on the televisions. So going to the movies was a much bigger event than it is now.
So I developed a real love for the movies. I saw Predator when it first came out. There was no " Predator Lore". As far as anyone else knew as good as it was. It was just another great Arnold Schwarzenegger action movie. Just one of many one off block busters. There was not even a hint of a second movie, which really sucked btw. But after watching the very first one I knew that the Predator was some kind of intergalactic Big Game hunter. And he just saw the human animals as a great species's to hunt and collect. And then he met Arnold! I remember being very grossed out as well as awe struck by the Predators first unmasking. I thought he was a really cool alien creature concept. But that was about it and I really didn't give it much thought afterwards unless asked about the movie. But no. 'Lore" as you called it was a term pretty much reserved for the comic book geeks in my time.

So the predators hunt humans obviously for trophies but they always try to find the strongest opponent and in this case it was Arnold hence why he revealed himself at the end for a 1v1. And that’s why he grabbed him to have a look closely at his skull. Pretty cool🤣

It's hard to see the first time you watch it, but the Predator shot at Dutch's weapon to disarm him. The Predator takes his prey out depending on how good they are. The weakest first, the one with the biggest gun shot from behind and Dutch earned himself a fight one on one. Not invisibility, no guns, just muscles and skill.
This movie was a lot of show and little tell. Many details you have to pick up yourself.
Differently from many movies today you are also shown how good Dutch and his team are. You are not just told that they are the best of the best, they show it and what it takes to shock them.

When Arnie was shot, if you look carefully the bolt strikes the rifle and blows it in half, the wound on his arm is from the rifle detonating not a direct hit. I think a lot of people miss that first time though and think it's just Arnie being uber-tough

@30:02 the tables have turned if one remembers what was determined about Hopper's crew. 'In a firefight . . . Shooting in all directions . . . '
You're right - this was the first - and anything that follows will add to the lore/etc. Books, movies, games, all take a shot at the title and want to bring something new to the table.

Movies back then left a lot of things unexplained and left it up to the audiences imagination to fill in the blanks. It's a great technique because it sparks conversations about what you think really happened or what you think was going on. You'd talk to someone else who had different thoughts that you hadn't thought of, it's great.
Whereas modern movies feel the need to explain absolutely everything so no one is left confused, and it sucks because there's nothing to contemplate or think about.

One of my favourites since childhood. Thanks for watching. Some interesting facts about this film:
    1) Jean Claude van Damme was originally supposed to be The Predator, but backed out after one day of shooting (he was in a full body suit, completely different from the Predator's design in the final film, and you would have never seen his face at all).
    2) Arnold actually LOST weight for his role in this movie, to look less bulky, and more like a trained soldier.
    3) The actor who plays Billy (Sonny Landham) was a real trouble maker in real life, always getting into fights, so the movie company actually had to hire a bodyguard to protect the OTHER people on set from him.
    4) The actor who plays Hawkins (Shane Black) isn't actually an actor, but a screenwriter/director, and he wrote all the Lethal Weapon movies' screenplays, as well as other movies like The Last Boy Scout, Last Action Hero, and directed Iron Man 3 and The Predator from 2018.
    5) The crackling sound of The Predator was done by veteran voice actor Peter Cullen, who is mostly known for voicing Optimus Prime in nearly every Transformers animated series and all the live action movies.

Story of Predator is that Predator, whose ship launched from mothership in the beginning of the movie. Predator's species are known as Yautja. Yautja species are known as warrior species. This Predator went on a hunting expedition for honor and trophies. He kills and collects bones, mostly Skulls from his conquests. Arnold's Dutch is a worthy opponent for Predator. Interesting fact is Jean Claude van Damme had the role as Predator, but he was too short for the role. Predator went to an actor, who stand at 7Ft 2In. His name was Kevin Peter Hall. KPH also did a cameo as Helicopter Pilot at the end. Legendary makeup artist, late Stan Winston and his team created Predator's design and prosthetics.

What a cast! Jesse Ventura was an ex operator and actually bigger than Arnold, and they were never filmed standing together! Bill duke was an amazing actor...juliard trained and amazing in American jiggolo! Billy was a complete wildman and had 2 guys for 24/7 security. Not for his protection but to keep him out of trouble!! The helicopter pilot is the Predator! They gave him one speaking line, so he could get a film credit and his sag card! There's many more predator films and Alien vs Predator! There's also a much larger tie in here. Aliens predators humans Replicants and Terminators are all related by a race of beings called Engineers, discussed in the movie Prometheus! In the 80-90s, Arnold was the absolute movie king of the one liners/memes! So many to repeat, but the most repeated line and meme in history is, " I'll be back!". Hard to believe this movie is almost 40 years old!

LOL, because of this movie, whenever I walked into another friend's college dorm room, I would never knock (their doors were usually open, anyway) but I'd just go, "Knock Knock". I love how Schwarzenegger's voice heard by the Predator sounded like a little child, at least when he was running away, LOL! You wanna see a real fun, good 80's movie with Carl Weathers, see the movie, Action Jackson. His short-lived tv series, Street Justice, was 1 of my favorite tv shows. I think Predator 2 is a pretty underrated movie sequel. Yes, not as good as this original movie, but I still had lots of fun with it. I think the movie, Predators, was also very underrated. Still not as good as this original Predator, but I had lots of good fun with it and thought it had more potential for other sequels in that same "world". IMO, I think some fans are way too harsh on the Predator vs. Aliens movies. Yes, I'd say they are more action than horror, but I still enjoyed them. On just a very slightly related note, Jean Claude Van Damme was originally hired to be in the Predator costume, but got replaced. I am a HUGE Van Damme fan, so count me in as a strong vote for you reacting to any Van Damme movies, LOL! As a HUGE Schwarzenegger fan, I'm game for any Schwarzenegger movies too.

For context, when this came out, Arnold had done a bunch of pure action movies, thin on plot which was an excuse to see him wreck a bunch of baddies. So everyone went in expecting something like that (I think this is after Commando). The movie subverted expectations, in a good way, by having Arnold and his team of SpecOps badasses get wrecked by this thing. We get an inkling that its not from earth, and keeping in mind, most alien movies are whole scale invasions. Not a single alien coming to earth to hunt humans for sport. For all its campiness, this movie still delivers on so many levels.

Billy is native american. Some native american tribes their warriors would cut themselves to show they had no fear, also as psychologicall warfare. Billy was denying his adversary first blood by cutting himself. If you watch it again, you will see that the blast Arnold took was actually ricochet. The blast actually his his gun, so the wound to his arm was much less severe. It was neat how Arnold made the Predator visible with the fire, which then damaged it.

Hawkins: joke about sex => die running after the woman
Cooper: chew tobacco => had his ribs exploded
Poncho: explosive expert => badly injured, indirectly, by the predator explosive's weapon
Billy: silent guy with a 6th sens for invisible stuff => killed off-screen screaming
Elliot: shave his head all the time => headshot
Dillon: loose the epic handshake => get his arm cut
The Predator : hunt from the trees => die from a hug log

Here's a bit of trivia for you... Stan Winston who created the Predator creature suit for Kevin, he wanted them to be a race of really tall like Rastafarian Warrior's called the Yautja that live for the hunt and only hunt the most deadliest of prey such as Human's Aliens etc, cause that's how they command the most respect from their tribes back on their home world, whichever Yautja has the most skulls as trophies commands the most respect... now because of the Yautja's size and height they got a great actor called Kevin Peter Hall to play the Predator, you may of also seen Kevin play Harry the Bigfoot in the movie Harry and the Hendersons staring John Lithgow... well Kevin Peter Hall in bare feet without the suit on he was 7 foot 2, but with the Predator suit on and wearing the feet that added a couple of inches plus the Predator head itself being bigger and higher that Kevin was inside, it made Kevin Peter Hall around 7'5 to 7'6, and Arnold is only 6'2 and the scene where Kevin as the Predator grabs Arnold and slams him up against that rock by his throat to where you then see Arnold's feet dangling in the air as the Predator holds him there before dropping him just shows the utter size of Kevin when he played the Predator.
Another piece of trivia for you is you know at the end when the Predator has blown itself up with it's self destruct weapon and you then see the choppa pilots and you see the black choppa pilot say... WHAT DA FUU...???... well that black choppa pilot is actually Kevin Peter Hall who also played the Predator, John McTiernan the Director of the movie Predator wanted Kevin to have a cameo appearance in the movie as a Human also as a thank you and a sign of respect for playing the Predator creature and for spending hours and hours in makeup and in the suit and not complaining once while in the suit for sweating and being able to barely breath and stuff while inside the Predator suit, John McTiernan the director said in an interview that Kevin was an absolute star and legend for never complaining once while in the Predator suit because it was so hot and sweaty in the jungle while shooting the movie on location. 😎👍

In the 70s and 80s when all of these sci-fi beings and worlds were brand new, there was ZERO expectation from the audience to get in depth histories and bios. Any bit that we got, we were happy with of course, but there was no expectation to get more. All of this interconnectivity and cross media world building is something that really took flight post Y2K. Before that, the extremely self motivated consumer could learn more about a character's world through comics/novels, but for the most part the general public was happy with what they saw on screen.
