The fight was actually shot at El Eden Restaurant inland from Mismaloya Beach, Mexico. It is about 45 min. south of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. In the late 80's, my parents owned a condo on the beach in Puerto Vallarta & told me about Arnold Schwarzenegger shooting a movie in the jungle down the coast. When my G.F. & I went down for a couple of weeks around 1990, we rented a jeep & drove down. El Eden was inland several miles down a dirt road into the jungle. It was on the side of a small river with a waterfall that you could use the current to slide off of the waterfall into a large natural pool. At that time it hadn't become famous for the movie & had no electricity. They cooked delicious food over wood fires & in wood fired ovens. They would stop serving mid afternoon in order to clean up before dark. We changed into our swim suites in the jungle with all of the jungle sounds. I'm glad that I was able to experience the location before they added all of the Predator tourist decorations.

Well, Mac yelled, "CONTACT!!" Which means he saw the enemy. At this point, no one had a clue what was going on. What happened with Hopper's men and what happened to Hawkins. When they see their friend firing, they trust the enemy is in that general vicinity even if you can't see them. Better that than they shoot you and you never saw it coming. In short, they did the right militaristic 🪖 thing. Even if you (a critiquing movie watcher) disagrees. -OG

    "You're hit, man. You're bleedin'."
"I ain't got time to bleed."
    "Oh... okay."
Fun Fact: Jesse Ventura was delighted to find out from the wardrobe department that his arms were one inch bigger than Arnold Schwarzenegger's. He suggested to Schwarzenegger that they measure arms, with the winner getting a bottle of champagne. Ventura lost, because Schwarzenegger had told the wardrobe department to tell Ventura that his arms were bigger. You're going to have to get up much earlier in the day to get one over a professional practical joker.
Don't Drink It Fact: The Predator's blood - a goopy substance with the color of Mountain Dew - was made on-set using a mixture of the liquid from inside glow sticks and KY Jelly.
Practical Effect Fact: The invisibility cloaking effect was achieved with a bright red suit (because it was the farthest opposite of the green of the jungle and the blue of the sky) the size of the Predator. The red was removed with chroma key techniques, leaving an empty area. The take was then repeated without the actors using a 30% wider lens on the camera. When the two takes were combined optically, the jungle from the second take filled in the empty area. Because the second take was filmed with a wider lens, a vague outline of the alien could be seen with the background scenery bending around its shape.

DUUUUDE! Thank you so much for all these fun facts! The Jesse Ventura story is hilarious! Poor guy lost a the bet early during the film process. I’m sure they teased the hell out of him haha Also the blood being mixed with glow sticks makes sense. It always had that bright neon ish color to it. And lastly as a cinematographer myself (Ari) I’m still blown away by what you explained. Mixing chroma key techniques and wider lenses at that time. To then come up with an artifact that was purposefully shot and had the shape of the predator….It’s simply genius! The problem solving to save up on vfx and come up with as much of a practical solution as possible. This is something I miss these days. Cinematographers and directors going through a creative route to solve a problem and not immediately going to CGI. CGI is an amazing tool but I don’t think it should be used for everything. Thank you so much for such an insightful comment. Definitely made my day man 😃

MY #1 FAVORITE ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER MOVIE!
Facts you didn't know about the movie:
Jean Claude van Damme played the Predator in some parts of the movie, but quit production as he was tired of wearing the original suit which looked like a lizard insect hybrid.
He even wanted to kickbox Arnold but the producers refused.
Kevin Peter Hall, RIP, was cast as the titular character as he was more of an intimidating opponent for Arnold's character Dutch being 7'2".
He even plays the helicopter pilot at the end of the movie.
Half the cast and crew got food poisoning except for Arnold and Director McTiernan whom ate Spaghetti O's and PBJ Sandwiches like Spielberg and Ford on Raiders Of The Lost Ark.
Schwarzenegger would later hire his own personal Chef to give the actors the food they needed. No hot meals were allowed due to the heatwave in Mexico.
The producers hired a bodyguard to protect people from Sonny Landham, RIP, whom played Billy, as he was prone to violent outbursts.
Landham said in an interview that, "We weren't making a movie, it was a survival story for all of us."
Oscar Winning VFX company Stan Winston Studios designed the PREDATOR suit for the movie and would later return to the franchise for PREDATOR 2 in 1990.
The scene where the stuntman falls off the cliff and lands in the water blew out his kneecap.
It rained for 2 weeks making filming even more difficult.
It was 110 degrees in the shade while it was 42 at night.
It was a box office success, making $100 million dollars ($360 million dollars today) against an $18 million dollar budget.
It was nominated for Best Visual Effects but lost to InnerSpace.
It's now considered to be one of the best Sci-fi Action movies ever made.

A little additional context for the fact about Kevin Peter Hall, they basically had to bring him in at the last minute because of Jean Claude Van Damme quitting. He was also a complete professional, never complaining while in costume, and that was an incredibly heavy costume with little in the way of ventilation. Because of that, they made him the helicopter pilot at the end, as a sort of thanks for the efforts he had made.

Regarding the Predator's camouflage: The alien isn't a gladiator or a competitive athlete. It's a hunter. It wants challenging prey, but at the end of the day it wants to go home alive, and with its trophy. Human hunters don't give the animals they hunt an even chance of killing them. Even when the Predator gave Dutch the "honor" of unarmed combat, it knew that no human is a physical match for it.

    • @ACoffeeFan238
      @ACoffeeFan238 4 месяца назад +1

Yeah. It's comparable to humans that hunt wolves and bears. It's a worthy prey that has a good chance to kill the hunter even with the hunters projectile weapon advantage. So trying to fight 1 bear or wolf without a weapon or with just a blade would almost guarantee your own death with minimum survival odds. Even though the predator has more advanced weaponry it isn't bulletproof. The only reason it survived the hailstorm of bullets and grenades was because it was invisible making accurate fire impossible.

Even with all of today's CG advancements, this movie stands up really well. Shows how much you can do with practical effects and good story telling. 36:55 is exactly the opposite of what y’all thought, the predator was actually scanning Dutch to check that he was a human, because this was something new to the predator, a human THAT capable and dangerous. So he was checking his skull to make sure of what he was.

    • @jmlaw8888

Yes this amazing scene got turned into a bit of a gimmick in other movies but the reality is hes checking to see if hes hunting a wolf among dogs so to speak. If Dutch is some sort of higher breed or caste. Once he sees its just a plain Jane, ordinary Humie he honors him by making the fight as even as he is able.
Lot of people dont pick on the subtle moments from this superb movie. Ive seen people think the Predator is just mimicking Dutch at the end. Instead of genuinely asking "no, what the hell are YOU!"

It still looks great but at the time it was mind blowing and one of those innovative movies that changed how movies were made. It was really a golden era for movies as there were a lot of movies like this. Great Directors like Stephen Spiielberg, James Cameron and Ridley Scott were still the new kids on the block at the time and were changing how movies were made. The way these movies from the late 80s through to 2000 still hold up to modern movies and in most cases look better is a testament to how fantastic the then young movie makers were.

A couple things I recognized as an adult vs watching as a kid.
Dutch and his crew are not friends with and Dillon.
The first thing Dutch says is “you SOB” and arm wrestles to show him who’s in charge. It’s not a show of friendship but a show of dominance.
Dillon asks why Dutch passed on the Libya job. Dutch doesn’t want to say it but clearly Dillon screwed them over on their last mission and Dutch has no intention of ever working with him again.
“My team works alone.” He doesn’t want him involved because he knows that Dillon is a corporate guy now and he’ll sell them out.
The scene in the helicopter when ”Jesse Ventura” spits on his shoe.
Also the scene when Dillon slips in the jungle and Mac tells him he’ll leave him for dead if he gives away their position…they all hate Dillon for whatever happened previously. It all makes more sense.
Secondly, when they discover Hopper and his men, and they were shooting in every direction and it looked like they walked into an ambush…it’s a foreshadowing of what happens when they first encounter the Predator, they have the same reaction. Just mowing down the jungle and shooting in every direction.
Side note: the helicopter pilot at the end of the movie…he’s the guy who plays the Predator.
The director felt bad that he was in costume the entire movie and wanted to give him some face time on camera.
PS the director is the same guy with the glasses who told the jokes about his gf. That’s why he was killed first.

One of the few, if not the only Arnold film in which he cannot defeat the villain with his biceps. The muscle he had to work out most in this plot is his brain as only outsmarting the Predator was he able to defeat him. Great choice for a film!! Was 15 when I went to see this, and still one of my favorites!! As suggestions if you haven't seen them, other MUST-see sci-fi movies from that time (aside from the original "Star Wars" trilogy):
    1. The Terminator (1984). THE movie that made Schwarzenegger, director James Cameron and makeup artist Stan Winston.
    2. Alien (1979). Has what many critics consider to be some of the scariest scenes ever put to film. Started the careers of Sigourney Weaver and director Ridley Scott.
    3. Aliens (1986). HUGELY successful sequel to "Alien." The Queen (also created by Stan Winston) is considered one of the greatest movie monsters ever created. Another James Cameron classic.
    4. The Thing (1982). One of director John Carpenter's best films. If you watch it, realize there is NO CGI or computer effects when it comes to the aliens; ALL practical, physical effects. The effects are so good they STILL hold up 40 years later.
    5. Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991). Yet another James Cameron blockbuster. First use of a CGI-generated main character in a film. The effects at the time were so revolutionary they helped show just how much computers can enhance quality filmmaking.

The big reason for why the Predator or Yautja as they are actually known stays in their camouflage/invisible mode even when they are hunting their prey, is so that they can pick off the ones that aren't going to give them an honorable fight to the death. However, once they find one that will give them that then they'll uncloak themselves and give their prey a fair fight, although, not all Yautja do this though as rogue Predators known as Bad Bloods don't care about honor and will kill anything that gets in their way.
Speaking of which, but Yautja follow a strict honorary code that forces them to follow which states that they cannot kill unarmed prey, the elderly, people who are sick, pregnant women, and children as they only hunt prey who are not only worthy but also a threat.
Also, the big reason for why the Predator used his Self-Destruct Device is to make sure that his technology doesn't fall into their enemies' hands and thus be used against the Yautja species. It's basically an honorable suicide rather than a cowards way out. The Yautja also use their Self-Destruct Device when they are seriously outnumbered when they fight the Xenomorphs as they do not want them to take over the planet that the Xenomorphs are on.
Oh and another interesting fact about the Yautja is that if given enough time with studying their human prey, they will be able to speak their language without having to mimic them with their Bio-helmets.
But anyway awesome video guys and sorry if my explanation was too long but there's a lot of information about the Predators that haven't been seen in the movies yet as they only appeared in the various comics and video games.

New to this channel and really enjoyed the reaction. Regarding the "fair fight" aspect of the lore, I think the Predator gives himself the same advantages any hunter does. The goal is to make the kill. When hunting dangerous animals we don't walk up on them and shoot in plain sight, neither does the predator.
