    * Noriko (female lead) might have been infected with G-cells (black mark on her neck) and survived the blast because of its regenerative power.
    * Takashi Yamazaki (director) explained that post-war Japan was at “zero” and the attack by Godzilla, Tokyo was at “minus one” - hence, Godzilla Minus One.
    * Amazing that Godzilla Minus One (2023) was made for under $12 million - just 1/13 of the budget of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024).
The American Monsterverse Godzilla is like a juicy hamburger while the recent Japanese Toho Godzilla is like a gourmet steak - both are “delicious” depending on your mood.
    * The latest American “MonsterVerse” Godzilla movies were full of CGI “eye candies,” and did not require me to think very hard.
In licensed “monster” movies such as Godzilla vs Kong (2021) and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024), I just “kicked back” and enjoyed the CGI spectacles.
More importantly, these two big-budget (over 130 million USD each) “popcorn flicks” were hugely profitable globally. This contractually restricts when and where the Japanese Toho could release or stream its Godzilla movies.
    * The latest Japanese “Toho” Godzilla movies were allegories of Japan’s traumas, which required me to think deeply.
In Shin Godzilla (2016), the bureaucratic Japanese government failed to address the 2011 (rapidly unfolding) triple disasters of earthquake -> then tsunami -> then nuclear plant meltdown using an “evolving” Godzilla as an allegory.
In Godzilla Minus One (2023), the people-led effort defeated Godzilla (temporarily) as Japan rebuilt after World War II (post-1945) with a compelling human story of “survivor guilt.”
These two low-budget (under 12 million USD each) “monster” movies won numerous awards including Best Picture in Japan (both) and Godzilla Minus One won an Oscar in the US for Best Visual Effects (the first-ever for a low-budget monster movie).

the nuclear testing during the Cold War inspired the Bikini, Godzilla. the name Bikini was from locals in the pacific ocean (maybe), then some french designer used the name to promote his lewd swimsuit. back then people went into the ocean in one piece suits to preserve their dignity

52:40 The reason he attacks is because Godzilla is like you said more akin to a force of nature. However, the bomb test that transformed him caused him immense pain. In a way despite all his power and regeneration, his existence is likely painful since his skin is all charred and burnt. He associates humans with the bomb and in a way is enacting vengeance on Japan even though they had nothing to do with it. Also fun fact but Godzilla has kind of always had a healing factor. It's more so tied in with his durability

Don't get me wrong, I love the Monsterverse films, but the characters in those basically exist just to deliver lines (to be fair, that's also largely the case in the older Japanese films too), but here you actually care about them. I’ve posted this comment before on other channels reacting to this, but the scene where Koichi is screaming after the atomic breath and what appears to be blood raining is a pretty great portrayal of a phenomenon reported by eyewitness survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki named “Black Rain.” The radiation ionized with the oxygen and hydrogen molecules in the water stored in the clouds, and rained a black and radioactive mixture upon the ruins. The Black Rain and the phenomenon such as the the people who were incinerated by the initial shockwave had their shadows blasted upon the walls in the positions they stood. There was one I saw of a child on a bike in the air, perfectly preserved, but that’s all that was left. Nuclear power is horrifying.

    • @Anton-qc1fk
      @Anton-qc1fk 2 месяца назад +2

@@DreamFearless it could be just ash in the rain that gives it that appearance, but in the nuclear case, radiation really likes hydrogen so while it’s probably not what gives the rain its black appearance, the rain that fell was very radioactive.

That's true. In terms of established lore, that's a sign of her essentially being "infected" by the cells of the monster - which leads on to other "things". In terms of the film on its own merit, some consider this part of the allegory that Godzilla is simply a symbol of the horror of early atomic warfare. Even those who survive aren't completely spared, and the damage lingers. So Noriko is alive, but not undamaged. Surviving, but the legacy of the monster remains.

Noriko got a piece of Godzilla's flesh which allowed her to regenerate and survive his atomic breath, she'd be dead otherwise. That's what is hinted at by showing the black marks on her neck. The long-term consequences are open to discussion.
Godzilla was originally an allegory of the horrors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki's nuclear bombings. What we saw on the Odo Island was his original state, the atomic testing in the Biklini atoll gave him his final form through massive radiation exposure.
He's never been a friend, an ally or an anti-hero. Just an unstoppable, destructive force of nature full of rage, pain and anger at those who ruined his life.
-1.0 will now always be in contention for the best Godzilla movie of all time. I personally rank it just below the first one (1954), but have no qualm with anyone putting it on top.

Fun Fact- the creator of the original Godzilla made him to represent the nukes that were dropped on Japan: a destructive force that levels cities and leaves behind nothing but destruction and radiation.
(The scene with the radioactive bicycle mirrors a real bike from the Hiroshima Museum.)

Regarding the G-cells in Noriko. Given the extensive trauma she sustained in the blast, she should have been reduced to jello but looked remarkably well except for the left eye patch. If she would have been a hybrid, her regenerated parts would look more Godzilla-like, but she looked like herself. The cells creeping up her neck were on the same side of her damaged left eye which suggest they would heal that remaining damage. I suggest that G-cells only have regenerative powers but not create a hybrid organism like Biollante. Also some of the 30,000 injured people may also have undergone regeneration

This version of Godzilla is what u closely see him as a wild animal that u encounter. For instance, in the Odo massacre Godzilla didnt attack until provoked, when Taki shined the light on him he became irritated not at the person itself but at the light which is why he attacked the guard tower. Same with the mechanics.. he didnt start attacking until he was shot at. Shikishima had the right notion when Tachibana asked him to get in his fighter and shoot at Godzilla. Shikishima stated that what if it only would make him angry which in turn did. Now when they were test bombing in the Bikini Atoll, my guess was that was Godzilla's place where he slept or laid dormant which is why u see him goin on a murderous rampage whenever any human boat came into its path. His encounters with humans made him increasingly angry not to mention the pain he endured during those bombings

(In the first place, Godzilla's existence exceeds the rules of physics and biology. That's why people are afraid of Godzilla.)
Godzilla is TATARIGAMI as mention Takashi Yamazaki in a interview, TATARIGAMI is a spirit (high-dimensional being) that continued to be feared even after it died a violent death as a human. There is also a theory that he is the incarnation of a heroic spirit who died during WW2. (TATARIGAMI is also depicted in Ghibli's Princess Mononoke. “The Black Stain" is common in both films.) Although TATARIGAMI is a wild spirit and is feared and shunned, if it is carefully enshrined, it can become a powerful guardian deity. They are the gods that are worshiped.
How would you describe the existence between God and living things as follows? The director and CG artists spent more than six months developing Godzilla's walking style.

Godzilla's greatest ability isn't his atomic breathe. It's actually his highspeed healing and regeneration ability. I believe it symbolizes the biological horror of misusing atomic weapons. Godzilla at its core, is to symbolize the fear of atomic war and nature fighting back when mankind mistreats it.

Ok… so I’ve mentioned this quite a few times during other people’s reaction to the movie and I don’t mind repeating it.
Godzilla was originally the villain during the OG films and this movie is a return to those roots. When we first meet him in the opening scene in his “Jurassic Park” form as I call it, he has a contempt but also a strange curiosity regarding humans. The only time he attacked is when he felt provoked into doing so. Kind of like how a spider or a shark acts when their turf is being invaded. But once Godzilla mutated and transformed into his familiar form, his contempt for humanity turned into outright misanthropic hatred.
He blames them for his condition and wants them to suffer. That’s why Godzilla is seen so outlandishly violent and destructive. He’s a divine creature full of wrathful vengeance.

Koichi seeing the boat for the first time reminds me of when Luke Skywalker saw the Millenium Falcon for the first time in Star Wars. you can insert that same conversation here:
Koichi as Luke: "What a piece of junk!"
Noda or Akitsu as Han Solo: "She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts. Plus, I've made a few special modifications myself, so if we'll all get onboard, we can get out of here."

The Godzilla Minus One director, Takashi Yamazaki, confirmed that the mark on Noriko's neck is made up of Godzilla cells, also known as G-cells. The mark suggests that Noriko now has G-cells in her, which could lead to a potential sequel. G-cells have been important in the creation of two of Godzilla's most well-known villains, Biollante and SpaceGodzilla.

4:50 "The gun wouldn't have done shit, bro!" PTSD doesn't always think logically. Tachibana is angry and scared, and the only thing left standing to rage at is Shikishima, the movie's main poster-boy for PTSD. Painful to watch, but very real.

You know the 20 millimeter gun on the plane would not have killed Godzilla but they did not know it. This was a first encounter. Hard to believe the budget was only 15 million. I thought Noriko's survival was a bit much even with the mark on her neck (Godzilla dna for the miracle healing?), but part of the fun of a happy ending.

That mark on her neck was a godzilla cell that got transferred into her and may have helped with her surviving. In an older godzilla movie called godzilla vs biollante, scientists mixed a godzilla cell with plant and human dna to create the biollante creature. Don't if that's what they were hinting at happening in the future, but really interesting thing they had at the end of the movie

So basically this movie is a celebration for godzilla's 70th anniversary and this movie is honoring and a reboot the 1954 original with a lot of changes but still respects it. Godzilla's regeneration isn't anything new at this point andis not due to the nuclearbombs it's natural to him. Sometimes he'll heal in a instant Sometimes it'll take sometime to recover. This godzilla is slightly taller than the one from 1954 by only a few meters and it's heat ray/atomic breath has always been a hug part of his arsenal

watched godzilla randomly on tv growing up in whatever order they were shown, but i sorta remember different iterations showing different aspects, like regeneration for instance... since he never dies. sometimes hero, sometimes force of nature, mostly a representation of nuclear disaster. most of japanese cinema has some representation of an apocalypse. there was also something in there about a godzilla particle, maybe resulting in regenerative properties, communication w the animal or creating other kaiju *monsters. when they were making these low budget movies, they didn't seem to heed continuity or write canonically, but the writer of this one may have gone thru the filmography to piece together this story.

The dark spot on Noriko’s neck is some of the cells that blasted off of Godzilla when he releases atomic breath. Those cells contain Godzilla G1 regenerator cells which were blasted onto Noriko’s body, and are the only things that saved her life from that blast by regenerating her damaged body. This is an ability of regeneration by the mutated cells and established as canon decades ago by TOHO productions. They have fused into Noriko’s cells and are now part of her. What becomes of Noriko’s future is anyone’s guess it could have a positive effect or a detrimental effect on Noriko overtime. I guess we’ll have to wait and see if they make a follow up movie.
This Toho movie and the original from 1954 were intended to represent the horrors of war and atomic power and what it can do if used. The Hollywood creation of Godzilla is like a superhero monster benefactor for mankind, and that is the image that most Americans 30 years or so of age think he is, but he is not Toho‘s Godzilla.
The Japanese on Odo island were basically aggressive intruders of Godzilla’s territory and because they acted in a hostile way toward Godzilla, also the Americans dropping the H bomb on Godzilla infuriated him and now he has a vendetta against all humans, this is basically how I’m seeing it.
