  • Ann Baldwin, PhD, is Director of Mind-Body-Science and Professor of Physiology at the University of Arizona where she studies the physiological effects of mental and emotional stress and quantitatively evaluates methods to reduce stress. She is a Reiki Master and has practised Reiki on people and animals for many years. Her new book Reiki in Clinical Practice: A Science-based Guide was recently published.
In the webinar, “Reiki - Get the Real Facts” Ann will describe her journey from sceptic to Reiki master and will explain how scientific research helps us to get the most benefit from Reiki sessions. We’ll also discuss Ann’s new book “Reiki in Clinical Practice. A science-based guide”.
Andrew Weil MD said of the book ‘Dr Ann Baldwin, professor of Physiology and teacher and researcher of mind-body science, places Reiki in the spotlight of scientific scrutiny and synthesizes a compelling, evidence-based case for using it in clinical settings. She describes just how clinical practitioners can take advantage of Reiki to optimize the health and well being of their patients and clients. I recommend this book to all healthcare professionals interested in how Reiki can be combined with conventional medicine to significantly improve patients’ experiences and outcomes.’

I'm loving this information thanks Dr. Ann.
The reason why this breathing technique is called Gassho breathing/meditation is because the hands are held in prayer position (each hand, palms together) _/\_ just around the heart. My Japanese teacher has said we breath in through the hands as opposed to the crown.

Wow. Thank you for this video. Very thorough. An honest look at a “pseudoscientific” practice by scholars with an open mind. I’m refreshed.

Reiki is a mind-body practice, rather than a 'pseudoscientific' practice. Do you mean rather that the mind-body practice of Reiki has been explored in a robust scientific manner?

Hi! Question: why does the stress induced micro vascular leakage decrease when their is noise and sham reiki? I understand it decreases less than in the real reiki situation

Hello Joan, we passed your query on to Ann Baldwin and this is her answer: "A great question! I think that the microvascular leakage decreased somewhat in the presence of noise and sham Reiki, compared to noise alone, because the rats responded positively to someone coming in daily and sitting with them. Even this small degree of personal contact may have been enough to induce a small relaxation response. Possibly, they linked a human presence with feeding or with enhancing the environment (cleaning the cages) even though that did not happen in this case. Ann"
