I just bought one of these last month, and it really is such a great quality Bible. The 3 ribbons in it make it ideal for annual Bible reading plans, such as the popular "Bible in a Year" podcast with Fr Mike Schmitz. One thing to note for anyone interested in grabbing this or any other Bible from TAN Books, is that TAN Books does sales quite often, so if you add this to your favorites and check in on it each month, you won't have to wait long to see it go on sale. I got this Bible for $34.98 on sale last month, and if you wait until their Black Friday sale, you can probably do even better than that.
I happened to find out about this a few days before it was released, and purchased it very soon after and really love this edition. I really like to use it aside my KJV comparing the two editions. God bless 🙏
Thank you for this review! I spent months contemplating which DR bible to purchase and this is the one I settled on. It is good to see you also like it. The only complaint I have read about is the gold on the exterior tends to rub away over time faster than it should. Your review gives me a great sense of relief since I have already purchased this bible. I really wish this were done as a premium bible, but then it would cost more, so I suppose that is the tradeoff. I really like mine! I call the DR the Catholic KJV. Thanks again! For anyone looking for this, or any bible, I went to a local used bookstore and asked them to find the best used one they could find, and it was about $20 cheaper than new. The best part is it was still wrapped in the original wrapping, meaning it was purchased but never really used.
Thank you, Tim. Looks like a lovely Bible, I'm going to put it on my wish list. And as always, I appreciate the way you review Catholic Bibles fairly despite your theological disagreements with us.
Thank you Tim. I'm going to put this on my list hopefully get this coming year. I've been hesitant to get other copies of Dousman Rheims as smaller print & I prefer red letters for the words of Christ.
Almost thou persuadest me to purchase this text. I just already have the Baronius Vulgate-DR diglot as well as their printed edition. I have an edition of the Vulgate I want to get from Church Latin, and it looks exquisite.
Hi Tim. I see how this Bible fits a niche when comparing to the sizes of the Baronius Press Bibles as you mention in the review. Something smaller than the Large Print and larger than the personal size Baronius editions. As far as layout, do you really think it's better than Baronius? Or how about the Loreto Press black hard cover edition (with the two large ribbons)? That one has a nice large font with a different footprint (from the Baronius editions) as well. It's nice that we have more choices to decide what matters most to us when picking one of these Douay Rheims Bibles.
Great review! It's a beautiful and high quality block and binding, to be sure, TAN having captured the early modern English Bible with Roman typeface look and feel in this one: they've knocked this one out of the park in my opinion, and if I were a Roman Catholic, it'd be the on the top of my list to get for my daily reader. As a King James Bible believer who keeps copies of all the major non-RT translatons on hand for reference, if I didn't already have a DR, I'd pick this one up because I'm sure that it'd last-but I do, so I don't see myself buying it. I'd like to hear from our Roman Catholic friends what they think about this edition.
Very nice review, appreciate the detailed review of its specs particularly. A little off topic question but do you own a Dickson New Analytical Study Bible? I believe it’s no longer in print but as I recall it had excellent helps.
Picked up this Douay-Rheims Challoner Bible on sale from Amazon a few months ago. It's a great Bible, but here are some caveats: - The gold lettering on the cover and edges shows significant wear even with careful handling. Might need repair soon. - Noticed a typo in Isaiah and one page in the New Testament appeared unusually large. Keep an eye out for these quality control issues. Despite this, it's become my go-to Bible, and I'd still recommend it.
Nice i like it too the font size is 10pt (compared times roman) . . I'm gonna give ya a heads up though . . The gold print can rub off easily. They might have fixed that because i got mine early. Also The first page of 2 Timothy is enlarged (12pt) All the info is there, it's just larger. I like it it feels good in the hand. And the font size makes a difference for these old eyes 😄 Great review 📖🙏
I just read 2 Timothy yesterday in this Bible and noticed the same thing about the first page which is enlarged for some reason. All the words were there, but a bit strange haha.
Hey Tim, could you tell me what the copyright/publication date of this volume is? The TAN website indicates March 2024. If that's the case for the volume you purchased as well (as in, you don't have an older edition than the one on the website) the Pope gaffe is pretty inexcusable. Francis has been Pope since 2013, and Pope Benedict died in 2022.
After getting into premium bibles it’s pretty sad and shocking how few options Catholics have for premium bibles. I have the douay rheims from the publisher you mentioned in bonded leather and it’s okay but it’s still not very premium. You would think there would be many more options for Catholics.
The reason latin mitres look the way they do is because of the translation about Moses' horns. A sideways mitre was used to depict old testament prophets.
But I don’t like about my Douay bibles is that the chapters are put on the inside margins of the page. It is much harder when Bible studying because one cannot speedily go from one part of the Bible to another like one can with a Cambridge, for instance, where the chapter is on the margin of the page, I don’t like the gimmick of red letters, since of course, that was an invention of the 19th century.
Based on your review I just ordered two of these, one for me and one for some friends. It's really sad to me, as a convert from Protestant, that there are no really top quality D-R Bibles out there. I've always assumed that it's because until quite recently the Church rather discouraged independent Catholic thought, wanting their followers instead to ask a priest. Thanks again for the review!
I'm honestly kinda sad that Catholic Bibles stopped using the Latin Vulgate for translations. I can't imagine it would be impossible to produce a solid critical text of Jerome's vulgate and compare it with the Greek and Hebrew text.
Could you please review the ignatius bible study old and new testament? Every review I have seen so far says nothing about the study notes. If it is more of that modernist garbage then I dont want it. God bless you.
My guess would be this printing (not this specific bible) originally came out before he was Pope. Cheaper to print what they already have than to update. It isn't hard to just write Pope Francis on the page.
It’s not ether or; it’s talking that here seed in a feminine tenses. And yes it’s her because it’s her seed do to the fact that Jesus has no human father that would provide that seed
Trigger warning: Obviously I knew Roman Catholics hold Mary highly, too highly imo (I think she’d be embarrassed if she knew - “if” purposeful there as I do not think she intercedes). Anyway, my point is that I did not know they attribute Mary as the person that crushes the head of the serpent. That would dramatically challenge many people’s understanding of that prophecy.
I have a problem with that. Mary did not defeat Satan. Jesus defeated Satan when he was crucified and rose again three days later. I've never seen any pictures of Mary hanging on a cross.
It’s a quirk of the Latin vulgate for complicated historical reasons. All other Catholic translations translate from the Hebrew correctly with he/it/they referring to the offspring of the woman.
@@MakeTodayAmazingIt's also been theorized that the identification of the fruit of the tree of good evil with an apple, has its roots with the Vulgate, as the Latin for apple and evil are very similar to each other.
I really like Bishop Challoner's note on the variant difference: "The sense is the same: for it is by her seed, Jesus Christ, that the woman crushes the serpent’s head.”
0:28 "Instead of he shall crush the serpent's head it says she shall crush his head instead of he. And it seems to be referencing Mary instead of Christ because the Catholics hold a very high view of Mary." YIKES! This and the other theological issues mentioned are not minor things. Such a book is important to preserve for history's sake and academic work. But as a "Bible" people must be warned away. Catholicism is not just another "denomination." It has an entirely different gospel.
@@nan.starjakThe NABRE has "they"... “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; They will strike at your head, while you strike at their heel.” Genesis 3:15 NABRE
You're right. The "gospel" you adhere to is a 16th-century invention that has no historical basis. No one believed in doctrines like "justification by faith alone" until Luther and others invented them.
Looks like a future rebind for me . Thank you for treating us Catholics with dignity and grace .

I'm not Catholic and have numerous doctrinal disagreements with the RCC, that said, I really like Mike Schmitz
You're a good man Mr Nickels.
One day...one day we'll get a "New Cambridge Paragraph" style Douay, I hope.
I got this about a month ago. Absolutely love this!
Looking forward to this. I may have to catch it on a replay.

Yea the enlarged pages in the beginning of 2nd Timothy. Haven’t seen the error in Isaiah.
Do you prefer this one over the large print Baronius press? I want an easy reading layout for reading at home. Thanks !
Yes. The Baronius has better paper, but the layout on this one is better. Red letter is not great on it.
@anickelsworthbiblereviews how does it compare with the loreto press?

I would like a 1610 version.
The gold on the outside of the bible wears off pretty easily. Also there is a typo in the back of the bible in the index I believe

What is the size of the font? Is it larger than baronius press large print?
Yes. The font size is not given anywhere. Pretty sure I guessed a 10 in the video.
Would you say this is better than the Baronius press edition?
Other than the red letter, yes.
@@anickelsworthbiblereviews The Baronius has red letter? I thought it didn't. Anywho, thank you for your feedback!

You are exaggerating! The Baronius Edition is better.
Ok
I am puzzled. How come they didn't put Pope Francis there? This Bible only came out recently. Pope Francis has been Pope for over 10 years!

I am glad actually
Most Catholic Biblical scholars I know of think the “She shall crush…” verse was a typo. As good as Jerome was, even he can make errors.
This is false. The pronoun used is gender neutral and either way the head of Satan is crushed by Christ, even if through Mary as this text states.
It’s not ether or; it’s talking that here seed in a feminine tenses. And yes it’s her because it’s her seed do to the fact that Jesus has no human father that would provide that seed
