I just wanna say thank you for posting this!!! I put a blue toned light gray permanent hair color on top of my orange hair and it turned a cool toned blonde!!!! So much better than bleaching and it worked!!
@@quynhuu Im sorry this was a while ago so I dont remember, but I got it from sally's. Just looked for a semi- permanent (or permanent if your hair isnt damaged) light gray tone. Dont use box dye, and looks for a blue toned light gray.
Thanks for being brave and venturing to color "outside the lines". Everyone wonders what we can get away with when straying from the instructions. Your contribution to popular understanding is much appreciated! 🙏🙏🙏
The color is MUCH improved. I am a mediun-dark ash blonde who is only greying here and there but mostly going transparent. No color to it at all so it's invisible and I look bald. Trying to find a shade that reflects my natural color but they were all too golden. Went with silver last time. Hair isn't silver but it looks great! Toned down the golden and put in the frosty highlights I had when I spent summers in the sun. The roots even blend in so there isn't such a distinct line of dyed and undyed. My hair was so dirty when I dyed it silver that I wonder if it kept some of the dye from being as effective. Getting ready to use the silver again (Nice and Easy, a new shade for them). Wondering if it will be a little more silvery this 2nd time using the shade. This is all new to me. Nature girl here. If I wasn't so short it wouldn't bother me so much that my cowlicks and transparent hair didn't make me look bald on top. Everybody sees the top of my head. So my fragile, thinning hair gets colored for the first time ever at 65.
Silver is too light, a level 9-10 depending on the shade, could even be 11-12 if just platinum level toners. But your hair is a mix of tones from a 4-5 brown to a very warm 6-7. Therefore silver is too light to effectively tone down your hair. It did a tiny bit, but if you want the Orange out, you first have to decide what end result you desire to achieve. Then you need to lighten your hair to be even or darken it to be even. Then you can tone it with the proper level and pigment.
Yeah 100%, kinda learned that lesson the hard way haha. In the past I've only bleached it to a certain level (lighter than the L'oreal achieved) to colour it with a bright pink or purple. It's a pity cos I loved those colours but I think the brand (RUSH) has since gone under.
Just a question I hope you reply!!! Buttt my hair is pale yellow like a baby yellow would silver bring that yellow down? Someone said to mix it with 20% developer and it should get rid of the yellow and turn it white like my other part of my hair. Idk I don’t want to mess it up I need help been doing research for days and your comment comes close to someone I need to help me, for reference I have the exact same sliver as her. Help… I can’t get toner till I can never had yellow roots before so I never thought of getting it with the rest of the stuff… 😢
The final colour came out quite nicely. It's pretty. For future reference, the roots always process more quickly than the ends due to the heat from the head. It's best to do the roots last. The Hair Buddha has lots of good advice on his channel. Maybe you'd like to check him out? 🙂
I have watched 100 videos trying to get the best outcome results to help me make a decision on canceling out this brassy + yellow hair of mine and yours was the best one so far! Simple but knowledgeable and your results came out really nice imo ❤🎉 thank you for sharing
Hi Maggie, just wanted to say thank you for this video, as I have been playing around with the idea of using that very colour! So, feel a bit more confident about it now. Of course, I’ll allow for the fact my hair is not yellow, but it’s great to see the actual colour of that particular dye!( purple base). Thank you once again! Brigid from Australia
HAIR TIPSS!!! check your shade level of hair, for example if it's too dark and orange and you get a light pigmented toner it won't be as effective as if you were to use a shade darker than your hair. I have brassy 6a natural ash brown hair and my previous dye was a warm toned brown... To go back I just need to go a shade darker for the blue and green pigment to really stick! I'm still struggling to find my color 😅
Thank you for posting I got the same “cookie orange color “ result as you but I went and brought a Dark Ash Brown hair dye to tone it down. Still got a “color disaster” but looks a bit darker brown. Thank You for sharing ❤❤❤
I went blonde a couple of times before and with dark hair u have to bleach it first and then use the hair color! But u got to go to a Sally’s beauty if u live in the states! If u do it with out knowing what ur doing then u run the risk of your hair falling out especially with using too much bleach! And dying it and then doing it again too soon!!
It’s true that purple and yellow cancel each other out. Problem is that you mixed purple with red,not yellow. You need blonde hair to achieve the color silver. You didn’t have blonde hair at all. Or yellow. And It was different shades of orange so that is why it wasn’t even. You can’t expect a light color to cover two different darker colors evenly.
Haha yeah, I kinda figured that one out in the end and went with a bluish dye the second time I bleached my hair. I think it turned out much better. Definitely a learning experience!
I fixed my struggle with brassy/orange roots this way: I bleach only the roots with a frost kit. The next day I then use my usual color (Ash blond). Loreal now makes a toner for blonds that cancels out 99% of brassiness between color treatments.
I would recommend topping your hair off with an ion color brilliance, semi permanent color that you apply with conditioner if you really wanna get rid of the last of the brassiness. But I think that the color came out really nice! It’s a very flattering color for your skin tone.
Put some drops of Gentian Violet in your conditioner and it will turn kill your yellow right away turning into ash color. I follow those instructions from a YT video and and my red and yellow were tamed. My hair is ash tone now.
It looks pretty but yes you have to leave in blue bleach with 20-40 vol long enough to pass the orange. Just do it one more time but don’t put it on your scalp until the end of application. What a great idea to use that as toner. If the developer is 20 vol. maybe dilute it with some water and purple conditioner so that it doesn’t over process the hair. Great job!
Im guessing your hair was much darker when you started. The red pigment in hair 8s the toughest to get through, so if your hair is fairly dark and you want to go light light blonde or lighter, you need to get through all that red pigment first, and if you want to have a blonde without red or gold tones, pick an ash tone blonde, because the ash t8be will neutralize the warm red tones
U gotta put way way more Product to ur hair, that's 1 of ur problems. Girl I wish I knew u,I would love to help u out... can't wait to see what u do next❤
Good of you to be a Guinea pig and let us see how this worked for you 😁 I have been wondering this myself after achieving that wonderful Lannister orange mane too 😂😂😂👌❤️
I have the problem of red too, however I use Loreal Super blonde, which can safely be used 3 or 4 xs I usually do it 3xs . I wait a day or two between and wrap hair in plastic while waiting 45 min to an hour. Each time. I have a beautiful blonde, takes some time but still cheaper than salon and it is very nice . If you read the small print it tells you you can use it up to 3 or 4xs
I guess in order to have your hair turn into grey color, you probably needed to bleach your hair once or even twice again (I'm Asian too, so I know a single bleach makes our hair go orange) until your hair turned blonde. Hope next time it goes well😊
I just want to let you know it is very normal for your hair to turn yellow at your first attempt because your hair has different coloured pigments that dominate your hair and your must be red or a gingery shade, what you usually do is take the colour down gradually if you are starting with dark hair and wanting to go blonde, if you think about it, it makes sense. I just thought I'd send you this to let you know you did not fail and just needed to take a longer look at it. 😊 good luck with your other ventures
You can always take a small hair sample and strand test the product on that before applying to the whole head with the product. Could save a lot of grief …
It went evenly you just didn't apply it properly........you apply it to the ends first and let it sit most of the time and when there is 15 ish minutes left you apply it on the roots as the heat from your scalp causes them to process faster...... if you apply on roots first and then the ends you get a un event results because again heat from the scalp make the roots process faster.....since the ends don't get much if any heat from the scalp.
Just use shimmer lights purple shampoo every time you shampoo while at the same time growing your hair out! It will be great plus not keep adding on more damaging effects to your poor hair!
The color looks more natural now instead of clown orange, but it's gonna be tiring to keep it this way as it grows out. Always dealing a 2 process. Let it grow out a bit a streak it, that would be pretty with your natural dark hair. But do it professionally this time, then no mistakes or guessing. 😊
When going to a lighter color bleaching most of the color you have on now , but leave a little color in, it’s like a sink if you bleach all the color of your hair color out the color you deposit won’t stay in long because it had nothing to grab on it’ll wash all out within a week so always leave a little of your natural or color treated shade in 😀 that box has 10 volume in it so thankfully you’ll get a little more lift , anything 10 or more is lifting 5 is depositing
They try to show people that it won’t lighten enough on hair that dark. With your normal hair color, you would have to use regular bleach and then when it gets light enough you would need to use something else to tone to a more pleasing color.
I like it in this video. A preconceived notion can alter one's perception of the present reality. You may grow to like it as well after a couple of weeks.

You need to lift some of the orange from your hair to get that grey to work in your hair. I'd lift it almost to white, condition the heck out it, and then use this color.
Should of rolled with the orange and make it cowboy copper cuz thays the new thing for winter. Cuz if you had dark hair you need to lighten again. Its a process. It took me almost 3 months of bleaching like once every other week and not using box dye anymore. But to get the purple/blue out of my hair i did one round of color oops and that made the purple blue. Then i used loreal effasol color eraser and it knocked the blue out like it was never there. And i barely lost any hair.
I expect my hair to look like this after the first hair to be like this after bleaching even with two hair color removers to help plus 20 volume and baking soda to and clarifying shampoo lol
