A Lion Runs Through the Herd and Elephants, Kumbura & Tokwe Quickly Protect Khanyisa!

- Watch as a normal day in the bush is quickly interrupted by a lion passing through the vicinity where the elephants are foraging! Khanyisa is easy to spot with her brighter pink skin but you'll have to look fast to spot the lion dashing off as the elephants trumpet! Kumbura and Tokwe both take to Khanyisa's side to protect her and Limpopo joins in soon, while Jabulani is close by and gives extra company to the calf as the herd wait for the lion to be long gone. While it's harder to see wildlife in the bush now with the lush vegetation everywhere, elephants use their sense of smell to pick up the scent of lions and other animals. If the wind is blowing in the wrong direction though, they can miss an animal located close by. Fortunately, this female lion moves on quickly and the herd return to feeding.
When the lioness got back to her pride: "Yes, it's true, she's pink" 😁
🤣🤣💖💖 the mythical pink elephant
Brilliant 😂😂😂
Love it! It was so nice to see how Khanyisa was "sandwiched" beetween Kumbura and Tokwe so she could be well protected.❤😘🤗
That made me laugh out loud.
Well done .
❤️🐘
Haha 🤣 bravo 👏👏👏
Love when the adult elephants go into protective mode 🤗💪🏴
Those tiny tusks are growing! My heart fills with joy when I see the protective love of all the herd toward each other. It is some beautiful to behold Love from Australia 🇦🇺
Goodness! One minute its all calm, next minute we can hardly see little Miss Pinkylicious, thanks to Tokwe and Kumbura immediately protecting her! Considering the lionness was so close, there didn't seem to be much alarm with only a little bit of trumpeting. She did hightail it out of there really speedily, best choice for all concerned methinks. Enjoyed Adine's impromptu language 'lesson' near the end of the video 😊❤🐘❤
Good grief 😲. A lion so close. Isn't it amazing that the older and bigger elephants protect the younger and smaller ones at all times, despite them not being related. So intelligent.
They are all related in a herd. Aunts, uncles, cousins, older siblings.
@@janejones5362 this herd is comprised of a number of adopted orphans who are loved and protected as if they were related.
If you look back through the history of this channel it is very moving and very interesting.
This elephant family is showing that they all don’t have to be related to be a very close knit HERD family.🥰❤️🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘
How they know they are not related . ?
@@liseouellet9705 Hi @Lisa Ouellette. Nice to hear from you. Khanyisa isn’t their blood family member but the Herd has welcomed her as their own which I think is so awesome and amazing too.🥰😊🐘❤️ If I’m correct, I don’t think that an elephant that isn’t related to the Herd family usually doesn’t get accepted but sweet Khanyisa was lucky and right was accepted into this Herd family. There is a male Bull elephant that is related to one of the mom elephants by blood and I believe the same mom to a girl elephant in the Herd too. If you go to their website, they have info on each elephant and who is actually related and who was basically adopted into the Herd. Some of the elephants do have sad stories as to how they were found and brought to this Orphanage. God bless you and have a good evening too. Sue M. (Florida, USA)🙏🏻😊👍🐘🥰
Hearing Adine and staff interacting in the field with the elles and occasional lion, the banter, exchange of knowledge, observations and stories is priceless.
Isn’t it, right? 👌
I was just thinking yesterday that I wanted to write in & ask about lions. Don't have to now.
It sounded ĺike there was also a French lesson in there. Good idea, it's one of the fastest growing languages in the world, driven by the demographics of Africa. Il est fort possible que le français deviendra une fois de plus la lingua franca. O tal vez el español. Or perhaps the long distance telepathic language of elephants.
French?
Don’t think so??? Afrikaans and Tigere’s language which is one of many in South Africa.
What an impressive sight to see and hear. That was a realy WOW effect. How quick they were to protect Khanyisa. The lion only tought was, away here. And off she goes. Good job for Jabu, Tokwe and Kumbura.
So very dear, the way the elephants rallied 'round Khanyisa ..... thank you for this.
Kumbura has always been my favorite of the herd. She’s just like me, a loving worrier, cautiously optimistic and always has a spastic heart attack ready to deploy when it hits the fan!😂😂😂
Ive always been fascinated watching elephant herds surround their babes behind their wall of girth, tusks and protection. Predators smartly and quickly back off. Khanyisa is so fortunate to have this herd family!❤
They are beautiful. And they all stepped into protection mode when the lion was close by.
It's amazing an animal their size only eats leaves and foliage, you would think they need more to sustain them! 🐘💙
🦁💙 I know that apex predators have to eat, too, but it's very hard not to root for the plant eaters... especially the ellies.
I find it hard to believe that animals their size get enough nutrition fron dry branches, leaves and grass. The safest place to be in the bush is by a baby elephant as the rest of the herd is so protective of the young ones. ❤❤
They are all so protective of little K. Worrying though to know there are lions so near. Blessings to all. Enjoy your day.
I love that Khaynisa 🐘 sticks the whole branch in her mouth and just starts chomping on it. That is very cute little girl 😜. Kumbura 🐘 is always close by her favorite little girl. That lion was very close but was gone in a flash. However Khaynisa 🐘 was well protected by her family. Just another day in the bush. ❤️🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘❤️
Yikes! Considering the lion was in fairly close proximity, the herd remained very calm other than a bit of trumpeting when they realized a potential threat was in their midst. I guess a single lion wouldn't have much chance against 14 elephants though (not including Khanyisa & Timisa as they're babies). 🥰🙏❤️🐘🦁
I was thinking even the youngsters could do some severe damage. Not a video I would EVER want to see.
Wow, I just love joining (virtually) the herd in the bush.
Fun fact, the lions were playing truth or dare, this lion chose dare
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Wow. The protectivness they have for the newest little "pink" member of the HERD is amazing. So lovely to see so much vegetation for them and when baby K eats, she seems to close her eyes and go into a "zen" mode. She such a happy girl, knowing she is loved, and part of a family worldwide that love them all.
Blessings and Merry Christmas to all.
🐘❤️🎄🙏🎉
They're exactly like how a group of elderly neighbors react when a carload of unruly teens drives down the street blaring loud music.
Adine, how many languages do you speak? Amazing lady. 😊
Oh my, Khanyisa is growing so big! She has absolutely thrived at HERD since she arrived as a tiny, traumatized baby! It’s wonderful to see 💕
I love them all but there's something that's quietly majestic about him. Always watching over the herd even from a small distance at times.
Amazing!! Interesting: the info concerning the rain 🌧️ and the vegetation.🌞🌳🪴- food for the wildlife.
Princess Khanyisa had her little ears flared but was sandwiched between her protectors. How beautiful this is to see❤❤❤
Elephants are so smart. I bet they would even protect you if the lion tried to attack you. Do you think they would come and rescue you???
I'd like to believe they would
Elles view the carers being part of Herd very tight bound.
Things some people say when they are at work: "Oh, there is a lion." 😁
Khanyisa still often eats like a child elephant, which of course she still is. She jams several whole limbs worth of green leaves into her mouth and uses her mouth to strip the branches. It’s quite cute! But she definitely still has a lot of learning to do! Love ya Khanyisa!
It's absolutely adorable 😊💕
The carers like Tigere are absolutely amazing. Their skills and knowledge of the local are invaluable.
Good morning my sweet little pink miss sunshine 💖💖
This needs to be on a special Khanyisa t-shirt.
💗💗🐘💗💗🙏😂
The lion was probably watching for a while. Because of the thick vegetation and wind direction, it was able to be so close before the elephants were able to sense it.
I wasn't able to see the lion. Although I did pause and replayed the video. Was it a lion or lioness?
I like that they will occasionally have reactions to or interactions with other wildlife. I'm been waiting for them to come across a snake. Sure they will just calmly dispatch it. Just as simply as they can easily chase off a single lion without a big fuss.
A lion is a more direct threat to the weak humans if they separate them. Hope all the HERD elephants and the humans caring for them will keep alert and be safe.
On the Community tab (on this channel), they have some freeze frame of the lioness pictures...and they give a video time stamp where you can see parts of the lioness fleeing. I think it is at 5:39 time stamp of the video.
@@vecarter569 Oh! Thanks for the hint. I don't think to check the community tab of the channels because there is usually nothing there for most channels of videos I watch. Got to the point I was wasting time looking.
I will go look now. Probably will discover I have missed out on a lot?
@@cheshkat6321 You are welcome! Both of their channels (HERD South Africa one and Jabulani one) are EXCELLENT for keeping lots of beautiful pictures (Rangers Ryan and Nathan's great photography); information of the Community outreach projects that HERD does; showcasing the Jabulani Tours Safari Lodge (& pictures that the lodge guests take); explaining their vegetation sustainability project; showing the children's school they support; providing info on the ladies who do the crafting that is sold to help their orphanage; and providing info on each of the elephants.
There is even the knitted Mubambi (or whatever it's name is) traveling elephant and all the adventures across the world that people take it to spread awareness of HERD and elephant advocacy. They even showcase their artist who does the Khanyisa and Jabulani artwork that is created for the merchandise they sell.
Both channels' Community pages are among the best!!! 😍 They post things weekly. I especially love the photography of the other Big 5 animals and birds.
O
I love your videos so much I look forward to watching them and I have learned a lot about elephants 🐘 thank you for sharing
Wow!
Sending safety blessings to all.
🙏
Que Papai do céu abençõe e guarde todos vocês.💕🐘💕🐘💕🐘💕🐘💕😘😘
Hi khanisa ❤️ hi all of you 🍀. Be well and safe 👍
I ❤️ how Tigre had to calm and stop ✋ Tokwe from chasing after the lions! Woah amazing!
They surrounded our pretty pink Princess so fast it was like a blur. 😂 🐘 💕
Omg a lion near the herd lucky their is mama Tokwe and curumba to protect Khanyisa Amazing . Lucky the Lion went away so this wonderful herd could grazing again .❤️🥰🐘🥰❤️
I mean Cumbura❤️🥰🐘🥰❤️
Omg, how can they stand outside with a wild lion running around?! 😳😵
Yes - it was so scary! 🙏💜
I've been thinking and have some guesses about what happened. (From my sofa - not at all as an expert.😊)
Elephants have been surviving for eons with these very behaviors. Maybe all of them running at once could be more dangerous. After all, lions are fast & will gang up on smaller or older - hence slower - elephants this way. (They do it with other hooved animals like gazelles.)
I believe herd safety uses different strategies. The carers seem to take their cues from nature.
Finally, it's probably impossible to round up 16 elephants not knowing what other animals are lying in wait or in pursuit.
It must be heart-stopping to have even closer calls than this. 🙏🐘💙
Hugs from an old chick nobody asked.😊
Most lion prides avoid elephants at all costs, it's actually rare they would even try to take a baby down, I'm not saying it's impossible for a lion to attack but saying it would be very rare in this situation
Tokwe is ready and Jubi is right there too ready to protect. Tokwe is thinking “girl, stay away from my family, yeah you better run
Sunshine is really showing her pink today😁💕look at all that good food😊
I love how elephants respect life.
Towke was ready to rumble! LOL
Oh my gosh! How scary for the carers too. I don’t know how calm I’d be with lions running around and trumps blaring! Yikes! Before the commotion though I was smiling at how Khanyisa was eating that small tree. Good on her. You eat that tree girl!❤️❤️❤️🇨🇦
Meisiekind looks very pink today 🌸
Yes I thought so too, in fact a few shots of her clearly showed her Princess's pink today
Thank you, I wondered what meisiekind meant. I did ask the question in previous videos, but didn't get a reply, I also tried to google the word, but I was obviously spelling it wrong. 🤗🙋🏼♀️
@@leandabee in Afrikaans it means little girl, amongst other meanings.
@@aparajitasaysbelieve thank you 😊. It is a lovely sounding word and I might even use it and say it to my Daughter, even though she is big girl now 😅💝🇦🇺
The lion seems to know HERD is the king here.
Aww, that gave me tears, seeing how they all rallied to protect and stand to attention!! Precious souls! What a gift God has given us!! 😇
Thank you 🕊🇺🇲💕
Herd will protect Princess Khanyisa at all cost, she's loved by everyone. 👍❤
Glad the little one is safe. How about you carers? Is there a chance one of you could have been attacked by the lion? Sounds like that could also be a human problem.
That's what I thought too!
I suppose the elephants help keeping humans safe as well as themselvs.
Exactly - I've wondered about this, too, seeing the carers walk, apparently unarmed, through the bush.
Honestly, tho, I've worried more about human poachers simply because they are often armed themselves and unhindered by morality.
To be clear, I have no specific knowledge about the size of the HERD range - or what parcels are near it.
I believe I read that the HERD property abuts other land that's a safe zone for wildlife. 🐘🌍💙💫🙏
Godspeed to the folks who put so much on the line to project these precious and varied species.
I think I heard of a time that happened in an earlier video and the Elephants surrounded the carers! How cool was that? The carers are considered part of the Herd! 👍
Lion against herd, no contest. Babies and humans protected by herd
The cows protect the calves and the bulls protect the cows 👍🏻
That was a very brave lion going so close to a herd of elephants.
Or confused one.
@Karen Stafford: I heard someone say that she has cubs. She may be desperate to find prey to feed them.
Absolutely amazing how they go into protective mode so fast. The love they have for each other can teach is so much.
She looks so good folks. You can hardly see her scars! She's come so far.
How safe are you with lions around? I couldn't see the lion on your film! I went back & forward several times.
We will post a time and screenshot in our community 💖
@@herdelephantorphanage ok good.
That was also dangerous for Adine and the carers. 😳
Jabu says " that silly lion interrupted my snacks". Booooo
Khanyisa is so tall now !!! oh la la it's wonderful !!!! love her so much !!🥰 Khanyisa enjoy to be able to catch tree branches now !!! Kumbura always protective to Khanyisa !! 💕🐘💕🐘💕
That lion wanted to get back to the pride by a shortcut, but wasn't interested in getting trampled. 😃
I saw a pale blur flash by only because I was told to look otherwise I wouldn't have noticed it. Dangerous! Thank goodness the carers are well informed and I guess armed in the case it is needed. Another exciting day in the bush. Thank you HERD
I was worried when she left the Orphanage, but Hurd takes good care of her.
Thku for circling where the lioness is. It's better in real life, as it's harder to see on film.
Shes so happy munching away there our little pink elephant xx
I wondered where Limpopo was when the lion came thru and then there she was a bit late but ready for action. Jabu seemed more interested in getting back to eating on that tree. Kumbura and Mama Tokwe always on the job ❤
Baby is pick up skills so fast, I love this herb for their sacrifice for Kanyisa
The first few seconds of this video is me waking up from a nap ... HANGRY!!!!
She is too cute. She looks like a little kid stuffing herself with everything she can get her “Trunk” on.😂😂🤣🤣🤣
I heard lions roaring in the distance when I visited HERD. Willington explained that the adult elephants, particularly the bulls, don’t countenance lions coming near the humans or the elephants.
Ooooo lucky 🍀 you!
@@user-vt9kd4no8j it was frightening. The lions sounded super close but the carers were unconcerned because the bulls were there - Sebakwe, Somopane and Jabulani.
That must have been incredible going to HERD. Did you see our baby K?
@@kp8381 I saw her from a distance. She and the adult females, young bulls and Timisa were already foraging. At HERD the ambassadors are Sebakwe, Somopane and Jabulani. I did ask about getting closer to Khanyisa but the Carer explained that the females are instinctively programmed to follow her wherever she goes so bringing her over to greet us guests would have brought Lundi, Tokwe, Kumbura, Klaserie, Limpopo, Timisa, etc…….
Close. Wow.
And what matriarch would not want to make sure that anything that put a calf at risk was ever going to have a second chance to do so? The fact that Tokwe wanted to head on out into the bush and put that lioness in her place, permanently, shows just how mu Khanyisa has been accepted.
They sent out a scout to see Pretty in Pink Lil K. !!!
To Khanyisa, the earth is a buffet
The interaction between the elephants and their human family is wondrous. Amazing people and amazing elephants.
One of God's most Beautiful Creatures is the elephant.
Jabu is so beautiful. Even his tail. Your laughter is musical folks, good to hear!!!!
I love family khanyisa
Watching the herd is definitely a highlight in my day, I can feel the love they have for each other, I love these ellies too. ♥️🐘♥️🐘🐘♥️🐘♥️
The look of complete contentment on the face of that elephant.
awwww i was so worrried phewwwwww thank god there ok hope u have a lovely weeek blessings to u alll kim
How exciting to see a lion....of course not for the lion....I would not want a herd of elephants watching me with one goal in mind....
Aw...Beautiful baby Khanyisa, what a lovely and exciting video 🤍🐘.
I know you mentioned, the elephants will protect the carers as well as the small calf’s. Do the carers carry any weapons. I never see any. What a scary sight, but the bush is shared by many wild animals. The lioness was more scared than the elephants, I’m sure. ❤ Be safe.
Nice to hear you all speaking French, as I now live in France. I am also English, and lived in South Africa for nearly 20 years, so, for me it's always a huge pleasure to see and hear the sounds of my beloved Africa. We lived in P.E. so had the Addo elephants close by, even saw one crossing the main road just by where we lived. What a glorious and exciting moment that was..
Thanks to the whole team for all your dedication and care of this wonderful (and spoiled 😆) herd. ❤❤❤
She is so enjoying
I love to hear the trumpets. Magnificent creatures!
I’m so excited I identified Limpopo as the elephant who was approaching Khanyisa after the lion scare!!! She is beautiful and caring. She is becoming one of my favorites of the heard! Jabu is and will always be my #1 fav! Then of course or pink baby girl!!
I would love to have body guards like these elephants! They are so amazing and protective over the younger elephants. I love watching it.
Amazing hearing the trumpeting. Bless them looking after Khanyisa. I bet the lion got a fright 🥰🐘🥰🐘🥰🐘🥰🐘xx
This family of elephants can teach humans a lot about family. 🐘❤
These animals are loyal and loving and beautiful. ❤
I love elephants, they are my favor animals an anything that want to kill an elephant,or abuse an elephant, such thing it shouldn't exist.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🌎
Watching Meisiekind forage with such gusto was a joy! She has such a trusting personality and that's normal for a little one. But, slowly she is learning the ways of the wild and will come to know which animals she need fear and which ones are no threat! Thanks!
That is pretty much lion nightmare, elephants and humans allied.
What's next, hyenas and baboons?
The end is nigh!
Nice to hear everybody talking back and forth now let me get this straight you see a lion nobody panics and you just go on like nothing happened wow crazy awesome video thank you so very much love to all from Canada 🇨🇦
I haven't seen Bubi in awhile. Is she okay?
She was in a recent video and walked up to greet Adine. 💙🐘 She looked very well.
And there was another video - can't recall date - where she was briefly 'scolded' by her mom for an unknown infraction. It was over quickly. All well.
😂🙏💙🐘
I was thinking about Bubi also, she could be with her buddy Fish somewhere.
Today i saw again how big they are! Jabu or Kanies will never ever fit in my livingroom for example😁 its brings a really other perspective how huge they are...wauw 😊
Канизочка вчера накупалась, нанырялась и вновь стала розовеньким слоником...
You know your ellies so well. I bet sometimes they wonder how their humans know what they’re thinking about doing. I can hear Tokwe saying, Gee, it should’ve just looked like I was la-di-da, picking leaves off the bush to eat…
7:08 several GREAT scenes 👍👍
Escuchar a Adine y sus angeles que la acompañan , da mucha tranquilidad ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Great photography!
Tigere is remarkable. He reads the environment better than the elephants.
Khalifa can really open her eyes on days like this over casted, which is a good thing you can see her pretty turquoise Eyes!! Blessings 🙌 to you all
WOW,!! I would be so scared and worried that the Lioness would come near the humans and the elephants too but, I do know the elephants that were near Khanyisa would go right to her protection and Jabu was so wonderful to go and check on his little precious Niece too sweet Khanyisa 🥰🐘🐘❤️. However, I did hear one of the Careers tell the elephants to calm down, was that long after the Lioness was gone or was it when she was still there? That shouldn’t be like that because if you want these elephants to be send out into the wild then you wouldn’t have done them damage. They will surly be killed or seriously hurt. Not a good thing when the elephants are doing what is natural.🤔 I think that sweet Pinkie girl Khanyisa is doing quite good and she seems to be doing very good getting the greens and other things off the limbs too. She shall get better as she continues to grow up more. I send hugs and love to my three favs always, Khanyisa, Jabu, and also Fishon too.❤️🐘🐘🐘🥰😘😘 Do hope that you Adine and your Carers all have a blessed and wonderful rest of your evening/night. Hugs, love, and many blessings too. Sue M.(Florida, USA)❤️🙏🏻🥰😘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘❌⭕️
