It never ceases to amaze me how family oriented elephants are. They welcome new members, young and old, with the same enthusiasm. If only humans could be as kind to strangers.
They are one of the very few species of mammal that recognizes themselves in a mirror rather than thinking the image is a separate entity, primates also do this

This video touched my heart! These elephants don't care where these new elephant came from, but rush to welcome them. They don't care about such a trivial thing! They just know they are the same species and want to let them know that they are happy to meet them. Too bad humans can't be more like them!
Imagine being Dok Koon, in a truck, not knowing where you are going, and then you see a bunch of elephants running to greet you. What an emotional roller coaster ride he had that day. Glad he is among friends now.
That looks to me more like territorial behaviour than welcoming behaviour. You see several elephants clawing at the ground and they also surround the human the way they would with a young elephant while there is predators near. Finally, you also see elephants urinating a sign they are marking territory.
@@obelisk21Did you get your elephants facts from a 80s tweaker? Elephants don’t urinate to mark their territory they are not dogs. And elephants are nomadic creatures with no set territory. They usually keep the newcomers in a separate pen for awhile so that they get acclimated to their surroundings and so as to not stress them all out too much. The new elephant will net veterinarian care, medicine, food, water, etc., so they keep them separated until they’re sure they’re up to mixing with the others.
@toscadonna Oh, I understand the necessity of what your saying, however, it looked as though they were taking him off the truck while the others were reaching out their trunks thru the slats on the truck. At the end, they had opened the back door to let him out & the other elephants were right there.
@@dhtisme7034 true but it would not surprise me if the herd was lured away after they had made their greetings…. These elephants likely remember their own arrival to this sanctuary and know the routine
