A Whirlwind of Elephant Commotion as Heavy Rain Pours Over Lundi & Phabeni’s Meeting

  • Part three of Lundi and Phabeni’s introduction is full of activity as heavy rain starts to pour down on everyone.
Read the full story by Adine about this introduction here: herd.org.za/bl...
Adine recounts the tale of the rains:
The weirdest rain storm started. It rained on the one side of the homestead and we could see and hear it on the roof, but we were still dry without any drops. Soon the rain started on our side of the homestead and poured down in buckets over the whole homestead. On the other side with the herd, who were out foraging in the bush, Sebakwe got spooked and ran, with Somopane and Tokwe. The three ran towards each other with loud trumpets. It upset Lundi and we decided to take Phabeni back to the orphanage to prevent any negative experience during the integration. Lundi twirled around and Jabulani also got a bit uptight. Phabeni was standing in the middle and unsure of what to do, who to follow. We battled to hear each other above the sound of the rain on the roof. We tried to lure Lundi with fruit and pellets, but she would come and then reverse to Phabeni, who was not sure where to go, who to follow.
There was a bucket at the gate with sweet potatoes and apples, waiting for Phabeni. With a bit of disorganised chaos, Lundi followed Joshua to the orphanage to walk Phabeni back home. Phabeni could not get past her though and it took some effort before he could enter the orphanage. With all the trumpeting and rumbling, he was upset and wet and cold, pacing up and down the orphanage. As it was sooner than anticipated, his milk bottle wasn’t prepared and while nursery carer, Khensani prepared his bottle, Joshua and I called and finally convinced Phabeni to come to the nursery for warmth and comfort.
Before putting on his blanket, we dried him with a towel. We were concerned that he could get a cold, especially with the stress of integrations, you can never be sure of the impact it can have on such a little elephant. How much are they able to absorb safely? Rather be safe than sorry.
In the distance, we followed the commotion as Jabulani and Lundi joined the rest of the herd. It was clear that they were not upset by the integration of Phabeni but about the rain and the storm, which was a relief as we are working towards a smooth transition for one and all.
Phabeni drank his milk and in the meantime, Herman sped off in the rain with the wheelbarrow to fetch some bedding for the clean nursery. The rain interfered with us, but we needed the rain and were happy with the buckets pouring down.
Lammie and Spotty joined Phabeni and soon, the little elephant took a nap in his clean nursery on his fresh bedding under his new Springbok ‘blankie’.
We are progressing, little by little, and in the end, all went well. We couldn’t be more grateful!

I love how Phabini tried to run back to Lundi and how gently his carers guide him and the rest of the herd. No sticks to prod or ropes to pull. Or even use of hands. Mutual earned trust through love and respect.

Oh my, what dramatic moments when the mighty African sky just opens the floodgates... And Mama Lundi and Jabu frantically try to protect their new baby, and scared little Phabeni sticking to his elephant family as closely as he can... Lovely to see him a few minutes later with a full tummy and cozy under his blanket - hopefully he was able to reconnect with Lundi, Jabu etc very soon after!! We are on tenterhooks!!!!! Thank you so much, HERD guardians - so much respect and gratitude for all you do ❤🐘❤️🐘❤️🐘❤️🐘❤️

Heavy rain means the big elephants are unable to hear or smell when danger is close by so it makes sense that they would work hard to protect the baby from all angles. Wonderful to see the lovely Khensani and the work she does. The young ladies of the world look to each other for inspiration.

Heavy rain also often comes with lightening. Big animals out on an open plain would be somewhat at risk for that. Also, with lightening comes thunder. Elephants are very sensitive to low frequency noise. Their own low frequency rumbles propagate through the ground and allow them to communicate at great distances. To an elephant a heavy storm probably presents a furious racket beyond our perception, in particular low frequency bursts coming through the ground that they feel through their feet.

I live in Connecticut U S A and have observed wildlife closely over my lifetime. My experiences have led me to believe almost , if not all, wildlife becomes uneasy during heavy rain or wind. It disrupts their senses of sight , hearing and smell causing anxiety. That is my take on it as a woodsman.

    • @donnievance1942
      @donnievance1942 7 месяцев назад +19

I agree. Also, it's a special case for elephants. They communicate over great distances with low frequency rumbles that propagate through the ground. They detect this through their feet. A heavy storm usually comes with lightning and thunder that would make a huge ground-propagated din. Even the downpour of heavy raindrops on the ground would just have the ground buzzing with low frequency noise. They are big animals that often live out on open plains, where lightning might be a threat, as well.

I think it was a great experience for Phabeni, knowing that Lundi and Jabu protect him and then Adine takes over for warmth and comfort bottle in his fresh little bedroom. Another new experience for him as he grows and learns. Lundi knows he is safe nearby and she will remember Khanyisa did the same. All is well and it was heartwarming to see. Phabeni needs to grow a bit bigger and stronger before he joins the nursery group in the homstead. Lundi, Uncle Jabu and Mambo will be just a trunk away through the fence there where he can touch them in the homestead. Patience. They might also change the procedures or even mama but either way, his life stories are just beginning for the little guy.

Wow, that was work!! Interesting in many ways! Learned elephants can dislike heavy rain, and don’t necessarily seek available local shelter. I suspect that, like other animals, they sense barometric pressure changes, but was surprised they didn’t head under the roof as the storm approached. Great team effort as you all got soaked! 👍❤️

Some elephants seem to LOVE lots of rain and mud.

Out in the bush the elephants will either huddle together or find comfort under a tree during heavy rain but we needed to get Phabeni to warm, dry and safe ground. The elephants don’t mind light rain but this was torrential 😂😂

@@herdelephantorphanageis it the storm and loud noise and not knowing where the noises of loud wind and thunder come from that spook them than the rain itself

I was so nervous when the heavy rain started and the sweeties started to trumpet and looked very scared, like they didn't know what to do. So happy when Phabeni was was inside with Lammie and Spottie, all dry and warm again, and what a beautiful new blanket! Love you all.

Wow that sure belted down, interesting to find out that elephants stress in really heavy rain. Don’t blame them. Well that was good to see Phabeni didn’t get trampled on, he seemed fine with it, no doubt that might change as he gets older. Gosh he gulped his mail down pretty fast too. So Adine I have been wondering re your thumb have you broken it? Oh loved that he wanted once in nursery grounds to go see Jabulani and Lundi near the fence! 💖👌

I never would have thought heavy rain could distress elephants. Maybe a fear of flash flooding?

What an exciting day! I was so nervous that baby Phabeni was going to get stepped on or knocked down. He didn't seem to be affected by all the excitement though!!!! You are all so wonderful and dedicated! That was really a downpour. The poor elephants were pretty shaken up. Why don't they like heavy rain? They so love the water. Just curious.

It was amazing to see Lundi and Jabu so concerned with the heavy rain I got a fright that Phabeni who was between the two whirling Dervish could get hurt but Lundi and Jabu were very cautious with their new Baby who still tried to nurse Lundi After many efforts from Adine, Tigere and Joshua the savior could get Phabeni safe in his cocoon with fresh straw that Herman has layed a bottle of milk prepared by Khensani in his tummy a new blanket to keep him warm and his Sheepy friends Lammie and Spotty in the confort of their orphanage calm restored after chaos
