I am from the state in India where this incident happened (Kerala). The men can be heard advise the JCB/Buck Hoe operator to be careful. The baby elephant's trunk may have got hit by the steel bucket. From his position the operator will not be able to see the elephant's trunk.
I don't think it was saying Thankyou. I just looked up elephant behaviour and widening their ears and raising their trunk at the same time is an act of aggression that says stay away ☹️☹️
Right? He was pushing the dirt down for the baby elephant to stand on, catching rocks that were falling, pulling the dirt out of the way. The whole time I was thinking "this dude knows what he's doing."
@@dixb.floppin798 I agree. The guy operated that machine like it was part of his hand. If you watch towards the end of the video, the operator was in an elevated position; he would not seen all that was below him. So given the confined space, his line of sight and the elevated position - I say, the operator of that machine was just magnificent. IMHO, he should have received an award from the government in recognition of that effort.
I saw a documentary where this guy spent his life rescuing elephants. When he finally died, it’s like every elephant knew for miles around & came to pay their respects. Incredible
This is years ago, I saw the documentary on TV. Even though the person died inside the house, the elephants knew for miles around that he had passed away. This man had devoted his life to saving elephants. How they knew, is amazing.
She says thank you, waits for a response. Nothing. She says it again. Still nothing. She turns to walk away but then decides, no, I want these people to know how grateful I am. Turns back around and with purpose and ceremony raises her trunk high into the air toward the rescuers. At which point they finally understand and call out to her, acknowledging the gesture so she can walk away edified. It's all as clear as day. Just mind-blowing.
They are SO intelligent!!! She raised her trunk once and they never yelled back so she waited a bit and did it again. She very deliberately wanted to make sure that they saw her thanking them. As soon as they cheered she turned around and they started leaving. Such an incredibly beautiful moment.
I agree. I noticed her waiting when she didn't get a response the first time! The second time she saluted and the people responded, she then quickly turned and ran to her family... it was clearly as you stated. What a polite lady to show such appreciation to the human rescuers!
It looked like she understood the humans didn't see her so she waved again and when the humans woohood she understood they saw her. Gosh I love elephants
@@aseelaadossery3378 it wasn't the baby it was the leader of the tribe it looked like. Waited for the family to go and followed them out as if protecting them. Pretty fascinating animals.

Im from Kerala - when the elephant raises its trunk at 3:15 the words that you hear in the background can be roughly translated to "Alright then, see you later". And it's very heartwarming because it's common local usage when you are bidding farewell to a good acquaintance as you part ways for the day :)
Aww, I like to think that the elephants know that too They have such good memory, I wouldn't be surprised if that elephant is still telling its grandkids about these people
@johny odisho Uh you do realize animals eat and kill each other all the time not just humans right? Hell cats and chimps have been shown to kill for pleasure not necessarily food and dolphins rape things all the time.
RosesofWillows I kinda want to cry because we all could be in this together. Even though animal nature is different like lions hunt other animals but also animals are smart. It’s just their nature and appetite.
It's impressive to see how intelligent they are, not only did they understand the people were trying to help their baby and thus not being defensive and attacking them, but they also clearly wanted to express their gratitude and made sure it was acknowledged before leaving
Omg I thought I was the only one who noticed that. She made sure her thank you was acknowledged before leaving. She even waved twice to make sure they saw it and when they all did, she then leaves. What an amazingly intelligent being elephants are ❤❤❤❤
the mother (?) waved her trunk once and got no response - a step or two later and she turned and tried again - then the men shouted all together, and she knew they understood, that's pretty clear.
@@activechaos128 " far more intelligent than people give them credit" We actually give them credit of being the smartest animals after dolphins, great apes and maybe corvids. Being viewed as #5 in the intelligence hierarchy is pretty good acknowledgement.
Hats off to everyone that helped out but especially the operator of that excavator. Probably the most delicate situation to use heavy machinery like that, and he did it like a champ.
As someone who speaks the language heard- they were shouting-"move along,go home", when the elephant saluted them the second time, one man shouted "we see you, we hear you". bought tears to my eyes. such magnificent creatures and humanity of it all...
I've been operating backhoes for 40 years and it's a pleasure to see this kind of absolute expert operation on that machine! One large rock could've hurt the little fella but the operator was very careful and absolutely expert in his control by sliding small amounts of safe clean dirt to bring him up safely. Great video! Thank you!
Robert Pillow Jr. the help from the crowd was great, too. He came VERY close to accidentally slicing off the tip of the poor baby’s nose, but the crowd worked together nicely to stop him. Very quick thinking.
Elder Millennial yeah, cause I’m sure his intent wasn’t to rescue the animal from a slow death from dehydration and starving. It was to slice him up. He wasn’t trying to create a path out. He was trying to bury him, but those bystanders stopped the evil machine operator. 😕😕😕😕
99% of these Indian operators and uneducated and get very minimal training on how to operate complex machines like these. But, most of them are truly skilled. In this case, this fell was exceptional.
2:58 - She gives a small thank-you wave; the crowd barely responds. 3:02 - She gives a medium thank-you wave; the crowd quietly responds. 3:15 - She gives a big thank-you wave; the crowd resoundingly responds, and only then, when she's satisfied they've undoubtedly seen and acknowledged her thank you, does she move on. ASTONISHING! Most humans aren't this profoundly considerate.
As a Vietnamese, I have always respected and love our India brothers and sisters. Now this video makes us LOVE YOU MORE!!! JAI HIND!! -- With love from Vietnam
Love Vietnam, I believe Vietnamese can relate to how Indians feel about Elephants :) I saw this movie once about a Vietnamese Elephant avenging the death of his owner, Really nice movie !!!

@@yawg333 The timing is too good. You could also hear the other elephants waiting in the background. Obviously they moved aside to stay out of the way of the people trying to help. They seem to have quite a bit of intellect, and for a creature that big you can expect their aggression to be worse than waving at something.
Even the baby understood what was happening and wasn`t panicked by that huge shovel, such intelligence they have! The icing on the cake and proof was the mother actually thanking the men for saving her baby.
I know a guy who's worked with elephants for over 30 years and he says she was actually saying something very similar to "thanks 'y'all muthhhhafuckaaas!!"
although we can feel warm and ASSUME that it was waving and saying thanks,.. actually the senior most guardian mother of the herd was staying guard as a firewall for the herd and was sniffing the air (couple of times at regular intervals) with her powerful trunk just to see if the herd was at a safe distance from the group of people.
How can anyone not feel love and respect for these magnificent creatures? Every time I see a vid like this I get all weepy at their obvious connection with humans.

@@tonidewonderful4187 Take off your cynicism and watch again. The mother elephant actually salutes twice. The people don't notice the first time (3.03). Then she turns around and salutes again (3.17). The second salute is longer and the people see it and they cheer.
The trumpeting & waving of trunk as they turned to depart was a "THANK YOU". The baby clearly understood the rescuers were using the machine to attempt to get the earth into position where he/she could climb out, showed no fear as the mechanical bucket came SO close. Such intelligence, & such gratitude from the elephant family. What magnificent creatures. Thank you to the rescuers from a lover of elephants!
They weren't saying thank you. They lift their trunks when they detect smells and become vocal when they are excited, upset or lost. They were excited to see their baby and they were smelling the humans in the area.
No idea why RUclips recommended this to me, but this is the most powerful animal to human connection I have ever seen! Very, very clearly the mama elephant is giving a “wave, thank you very much friends” gesture to the rescuers. Absolutely incredible
Truly amazing. The elephants were smart enough to realize the people were trying to help the little guy. If they thought the people were there to harm him, they would not have been so calm about it and this video would have ended much differently. The raising of her trunk was definitely a show of respect and gratitude for helping the little one. The animal kingdom never ceases to amaze me.
Yep. My great grandfather had an elephant 🐘. And the tales that my grandmother has told me about it is endless. Such a nice "pet" if you take care of it as if it were a diamond.
Plot twist: We are also animals, you are an animal marveling in awe at other creatures that walk the same plane of existence as us. If you take some time for self reflection you would come to realize that YOU are just as amazing. (mind blowing)
@Wyn S why would the elephant be upset that the humans saved the baby? The way they rush over and welcome the baby back and check him over and trumpet, they are ecstatic.
Every time I watch this video it brings tears to my eyes. Wild elephants. Showing gratitude. But not wanting to leave until their gesture of thanks was seen and responded to. Humans have a lot to learn from these majestic creatures. We're losing our humanity at a rapid rate.
You're literally complaining about how terrible humans are in the comments of a video where an ENTIRE CROWD OF HUMANS were gathered to help and/or appreciate watching a baby elephant being rescued for no personal gain whatsoever. Most people are fundamentally good! I will never understand how some people can't see that.

The thing that amazes me the most about this is that the head elephant isn't just blindly waving their trunk and leaving. They actually wait for some sort of acknowledgement before you leaving. You can see the first "wave" at 2:53, 2:59, and 3:03 before he clearly holds his trunk up and doesn't put it down until they receive acknowledgement at 3:16. To be acutely aware of the actions (or lack thereof) of other species around them is not only intelligent but incredibly perceptive.
I love how India sees these beautiful creatures as something to respect and protect. And to see the elephants show gratitude I mean wow how much more unconditional love does that show!?
We have our history in civilisation. Nature itself is considered god to us Andre everything which comes with it. As an Indian I’m proud of the way we have taken care of our wildlife. It’s extremely tough to control man animal conflicts and At the same time keep the forests buzzing. @Super Otter Indians have been educated in the benefits to saving their elephants and been taught that they are more valuable alive than dead. Africa's elephants roam over larger spaces and cross countries. African tusks are bigger and command more money and are killed at the behest of the Orient. I'm not normally one to anthropomorphise animals, but that really was such an intelligent gesture. Elephants are so much smarter than most give them credit for
there is some true story about about a poacher wrounded elephant that went to a a wildlife center. This elephant never had any true human contact before, went there, let the human there examine and put it to sleep without fighting. The humans of course fixed it up and got released later on. Why that one went there? One elephant in the group went there before. It look like they might actually talk and transfert their knowledge among themself.
People greatly overestimate the separation between animals and man. We are still very primitive creatures, with very primitive emotions. Yes we are flying into space, and have internet, however everything we have, was built upon the shoulders of those that came before us. Complex language, the ability to pass down ideas and record information these are the things that got us to where we are. If you take modern day humans and raise them without these things, to place them in the wild, not one of them would conceive the idea of sharpening a stick with a stone to create a spear. That was the Einstein of that generation. The humans raised this way would be indistinguishable from the animals around it to the average observer. As for emotions, where do you think we get them from? they obviously evolved. Fear (self-preservation) would of been the first useful emotion to evolve. The reward mechanisms, encouraging the desire to procreate. The foundations of love, to protect ones young. More complex 'newer' emotions developing through social animals, jealousy, anxiety etc. We like to pretend that we are high and mighty, and so far beyond the natural world. But in truth we are not too dissimilar.
Elephants never ever forget. They never forget. They have excellent memories and teach it to each generation. This group won't forget and might save a persons life in the future because of it.

That way we stop ourselves a little bit to evolve into more positive thinking.
But there is no easy way around and it's not rly that bad how it is, we just need to try to keep our own judging in our own mind or share the bad emotions with a small circle, so we can let out our bad site/feelings and maybe try to see why it was good what someone else did. I am from the state in India where this incident happened (Kerala). The men can be heard advise the JCB/Buck Hoe operator to be careful. The baby elephant's trunk may have got hit by the steel bucket. From his position the operator will not be able to see the elephant's trunk.
I was thinking the same haha. The elephant didn’t leave until it’s thank you was acknowledged
I don't think it was saying Thankyou. I just looked up elephant behaviour and widening their ears and raising their trunk at the same time is an act of aggression that says stay away ☹️☹️

To the person who was working behind that machine - just Brilliant.
Almost tore the babys trunk off about 5 times... He's not that good of an operator, just a good dude.
She says thank you, waits for a response. Nothing. She says it again. Still nothing. She turns to walk away but then decides, no, I want these people to know how grateful I am. At which point they finally understand and call out to her, acknowledging the gesture so she can walk away edified. It's all as clear as day. Just mind-blowing.

The joy expressed by the rescuers was as amazing!
I noticed it's the third world countries that really interact well with nature, and their impact on nature can be directly seen. Unlike in the 1 st world where we are so separated from animals other than pet dogs and cats we really don't understand as a population how much our combined daily choices have an impact on animals' lives all across the world
My sentiments, too. Blessings for those beautiful people who rescued that precious baby. The kindness of strangers for the least among us. Beautiful and inspiring. My eyes filled with tears when the elephant turned to acknowledge the humans.

Wonderful footage. I love seeing all the effort Indians go to to rescue their elephants. Beautiful, intelligent creatures.
@Super Otter Indians have been educated in the benefits to saving their elephants and been taught that they are more valuable alive than dead. Africa's elephants roam over larger spaces and cross countries. African tusks are bigger and command more money and are killed at the behest of the Orient. Don't tag your ignorant bullshit to my comment, stupid little prick.
@Super Otter The truth is that Oriental countries want the ivory and the poachers pay exorbitant amounts of money to anyone who will get it for them. They're armed with machine guns and kill anyone on sight. You don't want to know about the truth of the matter, you just want to add your two cents of African-biased bullshit.
For me, personally, one of the greatest values of the WWW is to broaden my understanding of the "ordinary" people in other countries, especially through videos of their love and respect for animals. In so many cases, including this one, they prove to be anything but ordinary … more like "extraordinary."
Hi I just at cereal but I spilled milk

Just out of curiosity, if you think that there is a ”god” that can do something, why did the humans had to help the baby elephant in the first place?

I met an elephant once in Thailand, I specifically say 'met' because looking into this creature's eye while feeding him pineapples and bananas I knew there's someone looking back at me. After he ate all the fruits I brought he gently put his trunk around my arm like a handshake and whistled. I cried.
It was the greatest moment of my life and I'll never forget it.

elephants are highly intelligent. And very emotional creatures. They think humans are cute from what I've heard. Thank you for saving this baby.
I'm not normally one to anthropomorphise animals, but that really was such an intelligent gesture. Elephants are so much smarter than most give them credit for
This isn't anthropomorphic - the elephants definitely were glad to have their baby back.
That's why they rule the world and invented the TV and radio.
there is some true story about about a poacher wrounded elephant that went to a a wildlife center. This elephant never had any true human contact before, went there, let the human there examine and put it to sleep without fighting. The humans of course fixed it up and got released later on.
Why that one went there? One elephant in the group went there before. It look like they might actually talk and transfert their knowledge among themself.
Frog Whisperer agreed.
Brings tears to my eyes. This is how we all should be.

If you heard the unbelievably cacaphony of drums and trumpets that the temple elephants are forced to stand next to throughout festival time, you might say many Keralites are totally indifferent to the torture they put these sensitive creatures through to satisfy their "needs."
@@mohannair1964 those poor elephants. It's so wrong to keep them in captivity like that. I don't care if it's cultural.

As a keralite I'm ashamed of those facts.
I was so worried one of those large loose rocks would roll and land on the baby's head. The guy operating the excavator is a boss.
The guy handling the camera was continuously giving directions to the crane operator especially when the machine came close to the baby's trunk.
You know why you care..? Because you're human. Trust me, a dog observing the same situation, or a cat, or a snake or a bird would not give a sh*t what happened to the baby elephant or "worry" about rocks falling in on it. That's why humans are more alturistuc and empathetic than animals any day of the week.

By the way, for the very person who has saved this little elephant's life, I wish you nothing but "God Bless You", bro. At the very least, one of nice people left in this world truly truly exists. Good job.
Alot of People are really nice and good in their heart but can't show because there are different opinions about good or not good, so that when someone thinks he's doing nice, there are usually people who think different and the negative experience stays more than the Gratefulness of the ones who think positive about it.
It's more of how we humans feel than what the best logical solution is to something, and to let those Systems Work together we need to decide and relearn some emotions, and evaluating things different. Just wanted to let out my thoughts:)
