- Wildlife Officials rescue baby elephant from a ditch. Elephant herd salutes the men before leaving
In Kerala, India, a baby elephant falls into a ditch (or an abandoned well) and gets trapped there. As the family of wild elephants watches and waits on the other side of the river, local people and forest officials use an earthmover to help the baby get out.
Watch when they come running and welcoming the baby, checking whether it is fine. The incredible moment then occurs when the elephant family head turns and salutes the humans, thanking them for saving their little one..
There has been some confusion on whether the elephants were actually acknowledging the rescuers or not. Numerous scientific experiments have shown that elephants are emotional beings. Elephants are known to comfort other elephants in distress and stand beside them touching with trunks and making soft sounds.
Here is a book by Virginia Morell - Animal Wise, which talks about the emotional intelligence of elephants available at amazon here -- amzn.to/2Xz0sep

National geographic talks about this in detail, adopted from the above book here --news.nationalg... - Животные

Im from Kerala - when the elephant raises its trunk at 3:15 the words that you hear in the background can be roughly translated to "Alright then, see you later". And it's very heartwarming because it's common local usage when you are bidding farewell to a good acquaintance as you part ways for the day :)

The "woooooo!!" from the crowd has the same sentiment as when the elephants reunited with the baby.
And I think the elephant family picked up on that.
I thought so too. The right pitch

Oh man, this got me. And the more you think about it, the more it gets you. That elephant TWICE raised its trunk to make CERTAIN that the humans understood she was saying ‘thank you’. Marvelous beings. Bless the people that helped. And yes, the care the heavy machinery operator showed was amazing.
I am from the state in India where this incident happened (Kerala). The men can be heard advise the JCB/Buck Hoe operator to be careful. The baby elephant's trunk may have got hit by the steel bucket. From his position the operator will not be able to see the elephant's trunk.
I was thinking the same haha. The elephant didn’t leave until it’s thank you was acknowledged
I don't think it was saying Thankyou. I just looked up elephant behaviour and widening their ears and raising their trunk at the same time is an act of aggression that says stay away ☹️☹️
Amazing animals.
It was reaching for the branch
the mother (?) waved her trunk once and got no response - a step or two later and she turned and tried again - then the men shouted all together, and she knew they understood, that's pretty clear.

I noticed it's the third world countries that really interact well with nature, and their impact on nature can be directly seen. Unlike in the 1 st world where we are so separated from animals other than pet dogs and cats we really don't understand as a population how much our combined daily choices have an impact on animals' lives all across the world
My sentiments, too. Blessings for those beautiful people who rescued that precious baby. The kindness of strangers for the least among us. Beautiful and inspiring. My eyes filled with tears when the elephant turned to acknowledge the humans.
Faith in humanity increased from 10% to 15%. Need more of like this to increase higher.
Why wait for others? You can make a change!
Faith went from 5%to 8%
@Craig Adams Faith reduced to minus infinite
the ditch was the trap humans made.
I saw this along time ago, so I am still at 1 percent faith.
This elephant was literally walking off and said, "Oh, lemme thank them!" Then waved and thought, "Maybe they didn't see me. Let me make sure they know how grateful I am." Turned around fully, waved completely, and then went about its appreciative way. Truly astounding! Bless this beautiful elephant family and bless those wonderful people who helped them out ☺️🙏❤️
Hi Danielle, I've been sitting here working out a suitable response. Then i changed my mind, you summed it all up so eloquently and beautifully. I join you in blessing the elephants and all the folks involved.
Danielle Hamlin Exactly the _feeling_ I got but I am not as sure as you and other seem to be that what you described is actually what occurred.
She made sure to stay there for like a minute to look at the people to gesture with her trunk. It's rare to see something so deliberate by an animal.
lol it wanted to eat tree leaves like the elephant behind it , but all the people wooing so much scared it off
Sorry to burst your bubble, but the way the elephant gestured is a threat to "stay away" or "stay back". Google it.
They didn't understand that the humans saved the baby, they understand that the baby was in great distress and that it came from where there were a lot of people.
The guys that did that are really terrific people

Beauttiful comment !
Just out of curiosity, if you think that there is a ”god” that can do something, why did the humans had to help the baby elephant in the first place?
Anti Matters Too Yes there is a God who created all. The thing is he gives us a chance to be beautiful or ugly loving or cold how great is that?
Richard Sapienza you still haven’t answered my question. Btw, please provide some evidence for your claims. Which of all the thousands ”gods” are you referring to?
Anti Matters Too I am not talking about any of the gods little g. I mean the one who created everything.
The one manning the backhoe was so gentle. And the baby fully understood what he was doing. Stayed as still as possible, working with the heavy equipment operator. 💙
seems like the baby elephant also tried to help with the digging
@@big_vladi You know, a couple of times I had the same impression!! 😄

Unbelievable the intelligence of the elephant. I adore that animal.
Intelligent enough to get stuck in a hole
@@datunes it's still a baby
It being a baby means it has about a 50/50 chance of getting killed by its own family. Somewhat depending on the amount of siblings born at the same time

Dolphins, humans and elephants I believe are the only self aware animals on earth so yeah they're smart
I'm not normally one to anthropomorphise animals, but that really was such an intelligent gesture. Elephants are so much smarter than most give them credit for
This isn't anthropomorphic - the elephants definitely were glad to have their baby back.
That's why they rule the world and invented the TV and radio.
there is some true story about about a poacher wrounded elephant that went to a a wildlife center. This elephant never had any true human contact before, went there, let the human there examine and put it to sleep without fighting. The humans of course fixed it up and got released later on.
Why that one went there? One elephant in the group went there before. It look like they might actually talk and transfert their knowledge among themself.
Frog Whisperer agreed.
People greatly overestimate the separation between animals and man. We are still very primitive creatures, with very primitive emotions. Yes we are flying into space, and have internet, however everything we have, was built upon the shoulders of those that came before us. Complex language, the ability to pass down ideas and record information these are the things that got us to where we are.
If you take modern day humans and raise them without these things, to place them in the wild, not one of them would conceive the idea of sharpening a stick with a stone to create a spear. That was the Einstein of that generation. The humans raised this way would be indistinguishable from the animals around it to the average observer.
As for emotions, where do you think we get them from? they obviously evolved. Fear (self-preservation) would of been the first useful emotion to evolve. The reward mechanisms, encouraging the desire to procreate. The foundations of love, to protect ones young. More complex 'newer' emotions developing through social animals, jealousy, anxiety etc. We like to pretend that we are high and mighty, and so far beyond the natural world. But in truth we are not too dissimilar.
The guy operating that backhoe has some SERIOUS skills!
those are pretty basic skills, moderate at best,
What skills?? 😂😂
I was nervous the baby would get hurt even knowing he got out
@ M.TTT. I would call it a little bit better than moderate when you’re trying to avoid a wild animal while operating it.
I thought so! The dirt looks to be very loose, just a little mistake would bury the little elephant alive. But the guy maneuvered the backhoe so gently and delicately that it did not jerk around at all. I'd say that's some great skill 👍👍👍
That indeed was sign of acknowledgment and gratitude❤

My heart just melted. Elephants are so sentient and intelligent. The mother elephant’s waving of the trunk to acknowledge the saviours of her precious baby was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. Proud to be from India! 🇮🇳
@@Luna_Belle_Voix i am proud of you. You hv a good heart.
This is a live version of an old story about a donkey who fell in a well. The farmer thought he would never get the donkey out so he was just going to bury him. But every time he shoveled dirt on his back the donkey would shake it off and step up. Until the hole was almost completely filled in and the donkey simply walked out.
Kind of a life lesson. When life throws dirt on you. Shake it off and step up.
The famer’s plan was to bury the donkey alive? And accidentally saved the donkey? Sounds about right.
In the process he closes a fully functioning well?. That sounds ver clever

Wonderful footage. I love seeing all the effort Indians go to to rescue their elephants. Beautiful, intelligent creatures.
@Super Otter Indians have been educated in the benefits to saving their elephants and been taught that they are more valuable alive than dead. Africa's elephants roam over larger spaces and cross countries. African tusks are bigger and command more money and are killed at the behest of the Orient. Don't tag your ignorant bullshit to my comment, stupid little prick.
@Super Otter The truth is that Oriental countries want the ivory and the poachers pay exorbitant amounts of money to anyone who will get it for them. They're armed with machine guns and kill anyone on sight. You don't want to know about the truth of the matter, you just want to add your two cents of African-biased bullshit.
For me, personally, one of the greatest values of the WWW is to broaden my understanding of the "ordinary" people in other countries, especially through videos of their love and respect for animals. In so many cases, including this one, they prove to be anything but ordinary … more like "extraordinary."
Hi I just at cereal but I spilled milk
@Super Otter it was white people that wiped out 90% Africa's wild life. And millions of African people so stfu.. dude

That’s true! There’s certain animals that never forget a human face and they remember how you treated them as well.

Elephants are too pure and sweet for this world. I hope they never go extinct
The elephant actually "Pointed" directly TO the operator! I can't help but think they saw the backhoe as the trunk of a large metal elephant. Regardless, respect was shown all around. That is a good day. ❤️
Well, im pretty sure a century ago when such machines were starting to be build and developed, they were partly based on the mechanics and use of elephant trunks. Backhoes, JCB diggers, excavators, etc. Elephants were the haulers before machines took over in those areas and im guessing when hydrolics and tractors were starting in the early years, such designes were done to replicate the excellent design of elephant trunks and movement.
Well said.
