No, we are messing with nature when we shouldn’t be. Animals in the wild die all of the time, it is how balance is maintained. We think we should be intervening in things like this, but it is wrong. Those Orcas would have been food for other species that scavenge for food. And with less competition other Orcas and apex predators would have more prey to hunt. It is a shame that a marine biologist let their emotions dictate their actions and not their knowledge.

I remember this rescue or one very similar to it. Can’t remember how many years ago it was but I do remember watching it on media channels. Orcas are sentient animals with language and culture (apparently) so they will have been grateful for their help. I remember seeing a RUclips video of 2 orca calf’s hassling humans and they wanted them to follow them and they led them to their mother that was tangled in rope and she obviously sent her calf to go get help and find humans to help her. She waited there calmly and let the diver cut her free and as sign of respect and gratitude for what the humans did for her, she disappeared for a minuet and brought them a huge stingray and gave it to them as a gift to say thank you. That is 2 different species communicating understanding each other’s actions and showing gratitude. Magnificent animals orcas, I hope they have the same opinion of us.

I remember an episode many years ago (40ish?) when 3 whales got ice-locked like this. People sawed holes in the ice to lead the animals to open water, but as time was running out (I think the baby died), a Russian icebreaker came to help. It was really nice to see the US and Russia cooperating to save the whales.

A great example of what compassion and expertise can do. From the whales cries of helplessness in the beginning to the wild applause ar the end when the last Orca found its way out into the vast sea of freedom -- a story that makes your heart swell and believing again in your fellow men. Bravo to all these unsung heroes!

Amazing story. Orcas are such special extraordinary creatures, I was very blessed to be able to spend some quality time with several of them when they swam into a bay and Silverdale Washington and they stayed there for a few weeks because they didn't want to go back out underneath an overpass for some reason. And they interacted with us while we were in our boat. They swam up and popped their heads up and looked at us and my legs almost fell out from underneath me. It was so amazing! Overwhelming; It literally took my breath away. I absolutely adore them. So happy these people were there to help them. Would have been so devastating to have lost them❤❤❤❤❤❤

I would do the same thing because it's survival of the cutest. However , how would a humpback whale feel whose brother had his mouth forced open by orcas that went in and ate his tongue as a snack. If we loving humans witnessed that what should we do? There's a exhilaration in working together through a difficulty to reach a goal. I suppose I'm happy for the orcas and sad for the humpbacks. Oh well...I did enjoyed the video. I'm sure the orcas approve.

What a beautiful story. It just shows how we humans are so little prepared. We think we have reached it all and indulge our best minds in petty things like a wider screen of a smartphone. But when non-standard things happen we discover that we cannot extinguish wild fire, rescure kids from caves or break the ice so that animals can escape. We humans deserve a veeeery weak C for our perforemance.
