Mother cow clearly asks man to rescue her newborn calf

  • This video tells the story of "Flo", a wonderful cow with a beautiful disposition, as she encountered serious difficulty soon after giving birth to her baby. On a very hot, spring day in Millbrook, Ontario, Flo was near the pond in the meadow that she called home. She and the rest of the herd live on a gorgeous farm where the cows wander freely and graze as they wish. It's life as close as possible to what nature intended for these sweet creatures. For whatever reason, Flo found herself beside the pond and up against the electric fence when it was time for her baby to be born. This fence is there to keep the cows from wandering on the highway and to keep predators out. The voltage is actually dialed down to a low setting. But her calf must have been slippery enough that it slid down the small slope and under the wires. It would have been difficult, if not impossible for the calf to get back under the fence, and Flo could not get to her newborn. The sun was beating down and the baby was supposed to be nursing, getting that first crucial dose of antibodies in his mother's collostrum. (First milk) Dave, a passing motorist who lived nearby had stopped with his GoPro camera because he wanted to film the other cows splashing and bathing in the pond. Their behaviour seemed interesting enough that he wanted to get some video. He stood by the fence with one camera in his hand and another on the fence post. He saw Flo acting annoyed to his left but he thought maybe she was just trying to express displeasure that he was near the fence. Dave knew very little about cattle and he had no idea that her unusual display was actually a request for help. Still not catching on, Dave began to film Flo as she pawed at the ground and paced back and forth. She looked at him and mooed as she did so. Even the other cows knew something was wrong and they came over to look. Flo was looking at the same spot outside the fence, and at Dave alternately. Dave decided he better investigate and he took his camera with him. He saw a small, newborn calf on the outside of the fence. It was lying still and appeared to be either dead or paralyzed with fear. When Dave got closer, he could see that it was OK but that it wasn't able to help itself. Dave knew the wires between him and the mother were not solid enough to hold her back if she objected to him going near the calf but he was now starting to understand that this is what she was asking him for. Cautiously, he moved over to the calf and used a stick to lift the lower wires. He could see the name "Flo" on her ear tag and he spoke to her as he worked to get the calf back into the meadow. The calf's umbilical cord was very fresh, showing that he was just born. Flo relaxed visibly as she saw what Dave was doing. Her agitation decreased and even the sound of her bellows had changed. She made no sign that she was angry as he shoved and wiggled the calf under the wires. The calf and Dave both touched the wire and got a few shocks in the process but Dave was relieved that the calf didn't cry out, as this could alarm Flo. An angry mama cow can sometimes be protective if they sense their babies are being hurt. The calf was eventually reunited with his mother and she promptly licked him and checked him over. As Dave walked away from the fence, she gave him a long look that seems to convey understanding and relief that this stranger had helped her baby. She led him off into the meadow and he was able to nurse right away. The farmers, who had been on an errand while this was happening arrived as she was leading the calf away. Dave offered to help them catch the calf so it could treat the umbilical cord with iodine and give it a checkup. They also had to tag the calf ("F20"). Dave filmed the two as they grazed with the herd. Unbelievably, the little calf saw Dave and wandered up to him curiously, seeming to recognize him from earlier in the afternoon. Flo also seemed to remember Dave and she gave him a long look before wandering off behind her baby. Dave was surprised by Flo's ability to communicate her need for help, as well as her patience with his inability to understand. She persisted until he finally got the message. What was also impressive was the depth of emotion that she showed for her calf, despite the widespread claims that animals are not capable of profound emotion. And one more thing about this encounter struck Dave as remarkable. Flo and her calf seemed to be able to remember that Dave had helped them. Dave created a video about this experience to demonstrate Flo's capacity for emotion, as well as he.

@@healingandgrowth-infp4677 I was semi-joking. That little piece of land between the pond and the road looks pretty dangerous to me. The calf is always beside the mother so the mother chose to walk along the treacherous side of the pond where it’s easier to fall in and closer to traffic, seems really stupid, and I thought cows were smart.
Also the video wasn’t too clear and for a sec it seemed like that’s where she chose to give birth? Which is also silly, animals try to find safe secluded areas to give birth.
Animals are pretty smart when it comes to danger so I’m still confused as to how the calf got there to begin with.

Cows may be less intelligent than some other animals but people have always underesrimated animals. We thought that birds must be stupid because of their tiny brains, but it turns out that crows can craft tools, solve problems and they understand Archimedes' law. Add to that they seem to remeber for years and have o sort of 'funeral ceremony'. Untill recently we thought that only dolphins are clever in the ocean, but now it turns out that a shark - a fish that has existed since before the dinosaurs, can ask for help almost like a dolphin. There have been several occasions when sharks that had something stuck in their body, would approach divers very closely and then swimming very very closely to them, untill the divers noticed the shark had a problem and removed the hurting thing from his body. Only after that, sharks swam away, but some returned for a minute like they wanted to thank. Speaking of cows, my grandmother told me that in a village, cows would use their horns to open locks on gates, they were then going on their own to a field where they would spend a day, and in the evening they were coming back, and they would close and lock the gate after them! All the farmers had to do, was to count if all came back, sometimes some cow could get lost, then they had to walk around and look, but otherwise the cows were walking on their own, coming back on their own, unlocking, opening, closing and locking gates. Animals are much more clever than we usually thought.

He noticed and shown that we might not be able to comnunicate even with very intelligent spieces, even when the other spieces tries everything it knows, to talk to us, and intelligently invents new means of commynucation. We can somewhat communicate with animals, becayse they've lived on the same planet. The evironment is similar, thus thinking is similar, and we share most of our DNA. Only a few % diffetmts us from monkeys, and about 30% from reptiles. I guess a cow's DNA must be about 85-90% identical to human's, they're mammals after all.

I worked on a dairy farm, I was in charge of the calf barn. Anyone in dairy will know what that entails, lol. One day we seem to be missing a calf. Found it in one of the lower pens tangled up badly in barbwire. Poor thing was cut up so bad, basically went lame. I cut it out of the wire, carried it up to a nice warm spot in the barn. I Tended to the wounds. Over the next few months I had to carry it in and out of the barn into a sunny spot out in the yard, until It could eventually walk on its own. Had to bring it her water and feed her by hand. Eventually my time at the Farm came to an end and I moved on.
"Two years" later I went back to visit my friends that were still there. I was standing in the middle of the open yard talking to the foreman, and suddenly I was lifted right off the ground buy something from behind me. It was that little calf, now grown into a very large cow. She begin to moo non-stop until I pet her and helped her to calm down, she remembered me !! She followed me like a little puppy for the rest of the time I spent there that day ! To everyone's amazement. But I secretly knew that cows are awesome❤️❗️
Due to all the response, and many questions, I thought I would add the following. The foreman on the farm was a registered New Hampshire veterinarian who specialized in cows, the calf was well looked after. ( The calf was very mischievous, and got out of its normal pen, and into a unused pen that still had Barbed wire, hence its injuries. Due to all the time the calf had spent around humans they decided to pull it out of the dairy rotation and kept it as a barnyard Pet. The cow lived a blessed & peaceful life, until it was put down of old age. And yes the story is true❣️

There was a paddock that contained two skittish goats in it and the fence line ran along the road. They never came near people. On this day however one of the goats ran up to me bleating and wailing before running away for a few metres and then coming back to scream at me. It was clearly trying to get me to follow it somewhere and so I followed it along the fence until I came across its other goat friend who had its head caught on the wrong side of the fence. I managed to get it out and as soon as I did, the rescued one ran off but the goat that had asked for my help jumped up on a tree stump so that I could pet it. Truly amazing.

Well, cows were domesticated for this purpose. Domesticatio demand social intelligence to not attack a human. A wild animal it's harder to eat because thay are agressive. Centuries of artificial breeding and you have cows for meat and milk, chicken for meat and eggs, dogs to hunt and protect, and the list continues.
Not only animals, but plants too. Domesticated plants gives us more nutritional parts and reproduce faster than wild plants.
It's just humankind using intelligence to gain control over nature.
