Debussy "Clair de Lune" on Piano for 80 Year Old Elephant
HTML-код

- Debussy "Clair de Lune" for a gentle female elephant called Ampan. Ampan is 80 years old and lives with us as Elephants World in Thailand. She is blind in one eye and can barely see with the other. 80 years old is very old indeed for an elephant, it’s about 10 years past the natural life span of an elephant in the wild.

Do you think Debussy would have imagined an elephant would one day enjoy his music?
No.
Yes!
He might have hoped, artists are dreamers after all
i like to think he wrote that piece with this very circumstance in mind, and that his wish came true ;)
I hope so.
For anyone that doesn't know.. Elephants typically flap their ears as a sign of enjoyment and excitement. The flapping on their skin also alerts other elephants nearby to direct their attention.
I'm pretty sure they also do it for cooling down.
Derpy Derp You’re right :)
they also do it to shoo flies
Hmm i was thinking they flap ears because piano is too loud
its ears are static until he strikes the first note. Amzing!
To be accepted by a wild animal is probably the highest compliment one can get from nature.

Elephant immediately reacts with ear flaps as soon as the playing started...it is also feeling the vibration of the piano through the ground, especially in the lower registers, so it's actually experiencing the music in ways we can't...pretty cool...would love to know what it's thinking about all that...🐘🐘🐘

This will always and forever be my favorite video of all time. Elephants fascinate me. They laugh, and they cry. They love and they hate. They have traditions and rituals. They play with their children, and they mourn their dead. All it takes is a set of eyes and a basic sense of empathy to recognize them as self-aware beings much like you and I.
An elephant's brain weighs 12 pounds. That's the same as about 4 human brains, not to mention we humans probably had to trade off a lot of mental functionality in order to have language. We think we're the smartest because we're the only ones that can have a conversation about it. But I guarantee that elephant is wiser than me.
The way her entire demeanor changes when he starts playing, you can tell she's listening and enjoying the music. Something about the way her ears move in recognition just tugs at my heart. It's such a melancholy thing to see that reaction from a creature that's lived such a long life and has seen much more than I have, or may ever see. There are emotional depths behind those eyes that we as humans could never fully grasp. But when we do manage to bridge that gap, even for just a moment, it's by way of pure empathy, and it's truly beautiful.
Wow, and this is comment is making me almost cry. I feel the same about elephants. They truly are an emotional animal.
Wonderful comment.
Beautifully said, thank you for putting into words what my tears are saying.
For me, it was the close up of her eye that moved me the most.
A few years ago I had the privilege of seeing this magnificent species in the African wild. It was the thrill of a lifetime.
yup, there are definitely at least a few animals besides us with that same sentience.
To respond to your mention of us trading some possible intellect for speech, this is called the Cognitive Tradeoff Theory. Through demonstration, we can show that the main ability we sacrificed is a photographic short term memory with complex spacial placement. Though, while I think humans are smarter overall, wisdom is harder to express or quantify. I don't doubt elephants can be wise. Wisdom is mostly influenced by experience and something that has lived for 80 years, regardless of intelligence, would have a wealth of experience.
With the happy ear flapping and the look of joy and contentment in her eyes, you can tell she is a truly happy old girl. It even looks to me like she shed a tear at some point. 🥺❤
"and the look of joy and contentment in her eyes"
What a load of crap. You believe it's joy and contentment because that is what you want to see. You obviously are biased and you're attributing human traits, emotions, or intentions to elephants which aren't humans. If you took a screen shot of the closeup of the elephants eye and printed out an image which you showed to a large number of people and asked them "What do you believe this elephant is thinking?" you'd get a great number of different opinions, none of which by the way, might be joy and contentment. The bottom line is that you have no idea what an animal is thinking/experiencing when they hear music. All you know it what YOU experience and you assume the animal does too.
TL;DR...You're a moron.
Only humans shed emotional tears.
I don't believe that@@Anon1gh3
@@Anon1gh3You could be wrong though. Elephants do grief whenever they lose a relative in a herd and they do shed tears, but scientists are unsure if it's due to an emotional reason or not.
But they do feel sadness and empathy, so I kinda want to believe they do cry.
@@its_johnH Well lets not let our wants obscure the truth. We humans have a bad habit of projecting our sympathies onto animals. By the way, "empathy" is based on shared experience, "sympathy" is based on emotion. People say women are more empathetic than men but that's actually backwards. Men generally want to help those they have common experiences with, whereas women generally want to help those who are the _most_ different or unrelatable, often to the detriment of both parties. If you don't know what problem you're dealing with, more harm tends to be the result. There's something called a white savior complex that exemplifies this.

Just like this elephant, she would stay quiet and enjoy until it was over. A few months after she's gone and this video appears. When you are close to an elephant, you feel that you can hear its thoughts. Just like telepathy. It's phenomenal. Elephants have so much depth in them and so do classical musician. It's almost a spiritual meeting of two souls.
As should every encounter should be. We humans are in the billions whilst these animals number in the thousands perhaps hundreds. It is indeed a meeting of two souls but it inherently more special because it's not as if you could walk outside and meet an elephant alost instantly. These animals are protected. And rightly so, anyone who sows the evil seeds of karma will surely be the hand that also wipes themselves out. Karma will always get you in the end.
But I digress, I say that elephants are unique and special. And it was a wonderful treat to see this video. I really could feel the emotions the elephant was conveying. Assuming the title might be talking about human years, in elephant years that's 91 and half 😮 Still impressing and very beautiful :)
George true
Wouldn’t it heaven if we could all be this kind?! You can see the appreciation the beautiful elephant has for this man ❤
I like your interaction with the elephants, they seem to enjoy it, it almost makes me cry (no not almost to be honest) It is simply beautiful to see how intelligent the creatures around us can be. Very impressive!
@Hello there, how are you doing this blessed day?
That elephant was born in 1938, what a good looking elephant.
(I love my replies😔)
1938. This was posted in 2018.
@@vimos.9996 Which means the elephant could not have been born in 1939 for it to have been 80 years old in 2018.
We don't need negativity. Look at the pretty elephant listening to the music🤭
Why It? Hey man. How did I find you randomly on this video?
@@vimos.9996 no as a matter of fact you are dead wrong.
Not only is the elephant flapping her ears in joy, she's crying as well. Now I'm crying, too. These two are best buds.
Mi Musisica how dare you, she's clearly a girl >:(
Umer Shaikh he's being ironic
but he's probably making a transphobic joke so-
yay you changed the pronouns, ty
@@ladylark10884 Nah don't act like you knew all along lmao you read the desc.
I love that the most replayed part of this video is the end when he's petting the elephant.
Because that's my favorite part too
These gentle giants never cease to amaze me. God bless this gentleman for his kindness in caring for them!
The people who disliked actually missed the like button because they had tears on their eyes and couldn’t see

3500 dislike... naa my friend. its more than that, they are sociopaths who cant show feelings or compassion. these animals have more compassion than most humans now these days...
@@x...CrankyOldMan...x honestly fuck those people and their problems.
That's so original!
I don't get it
I love the way she flaps her ears when he starts playing, its like she is enjoying it and reminds me of a dog wagging its tail. Although I dont know if it means that
Edit: Its been a while since I posted this comment and now returned to read the replies (8 months), probably one of the most wholesome reply sections I've ever seen :-)
Its heartening to see so many people watching this beautiful Elephant and talking about her / them
Flapping ears can express excitement or joy, yes, but it can also be used as a way to communicate with their herd if they are beating their ears loudly. In very hot weather, elephant may flap their ears to cool down, but I perceive in this case, she is expressing joy at the gentle melody. Thus really is the best thing RUclips has recommended for me in a while! 🐘
@@charliecoulls8095 ok do you actually know about elephants or did you just straight up rip this off of Google because that's exactly what the first search result says aside from the opinion.
@@thematturlookingfor That's what Google is for, if I'm not mistaken.
A exactly 😂
Dying on the "ripping it off of google" like it's taking some info and sharing it with others😂 that's not ripping it off🤦♀️🤦♀️
That elephant will never forget that performance.
Ah, how sweet...and Ampan looks darn good for their age of 80! Love how quietly the elephant listened...
I want this video to be the end credit scene of human life.
Would be a beautiful end if it was.
If something isn’t rare, what determines its value.
Essentially, unending life is unfulfilling and meaningless
@A mad scientist.... Student It’s objectively meaningless, I would agree with that
@A dead scientist Objectively meaningless perhaps since we're just a collection of organic molecules existing on a ball of rock, directed by the forces of natural selection. But in that sense, everything in the universe is meaningless.
BUT, things like this are subjectively very meaningful, and for no other reason than because we say so.
Don't get too caught up in nihilism dude.
@@hailarwotanaz5848
Unfulfilling and meaningless?
I have to differ. The fulfilment and meaning would be the ones you'd make of this unending life/immortality.
I love how animals appreciate music it’s really so beautiful, I have pet rats and when I play guitar they stop playing to come sit by me to listen. So beautiful
No way!! Record that i have to see tht
@@backing5284 my hamster does that when i play piano
@Howard&Erica no one cares, just enjoy the video 😃
BRO YOU LIVE IN NEW YORK?????
@Howard&Erica there’s plenty of scientific and simply visual evidence supporting the fact that animals can enjoy music. Or did you forget that humans are animals too? It just works diffently for different species.
Pure Heartfelt beauty! I am still wiping tears from my eyes. If everyone saw this it would give the world hope.
@Hello there, how are you doing this blessed day?
I am moved to weeping ….. what a beautiful display of gentility by the pianist to begin with single notes as to not startle or overwhelm this majestic creature.

And for three and a half minutes, life was okay
Lmao 😂 this made me sad but also happy.
So true

Nice reflection .... : )
Apparently elephants see humans as cute just like how we would see a puppy or a kitten. Which is just so amazing to me.
Purmhy that’s a myth buddy :/
@Aeolwn- Awwww.
Aeolwn I love forcing politics and world news onto nice comments!
Aeolwn gtfo of here with ur politics and negativity
Where the fuck is the politics comment?
Someone beautiful being given a gift like music. Her peaceful eyes speak volumes. Even though they are the largest land Animal, they choose to be the most gentle and appreciative.
Unlike small weak humans who choose to hurt her kind & other Animals.
But then you come across people like this. This little concert was a privilege for him to do and he knows it. Only special people deserve to get this close to the noble & regal Royals of the wild!♥️🐘♥️
Thank❤You Sir for doing this!🤗♥️☘️🐾🌈☮️🇨🇦🕊
That elephant was so happy to not be hit and punished by humans.
If you have been to Thailand and seen "elephant sanctuaries" there, you know. Heartless people.
The elephant actually pays attention... And this is moving
They’re pretty smart
I'm not crying you're crying
nvm we're both crying
In the deleted scenes the elephant actually applauses the performance and requests another of Debussy's relaxing pieces.
@@jimhalpert9898 😂
Notice how she hunches her back and backs up just slightly as the music gets more intense? I am just glad she can hear the music at 80 years old.
I really wanted to make a joke about Debussy but this just too much of a perfect masterpiece.
Thats the reason why i clicked on the video on the first place but now i cant even bring myself to make an -ussy joke

What's more wet: deep wells or Debussy?
Oh, Debussy, I love Debussy!
Sometimes all I can think about is Debussy.
Oh, look at the pianist!
The pianist is so good with Debussy.
I worked with elephants for a short while in Thailand and their empathy and inherent good and innocent nature changed my life for the better. I will be forever grateful for them. This is amazing!
You had a very profound Blessing to be able to work with such amazing beings! I can only imagine how it felt but what I sense from your words is quite amazing! Thank you for confirming what I have long suspected about elephants natural tendencies and behavior! ⭐💖🙏
