every animal enjoys music we just cant tell. We humans are so arrogant to think we would even know what an animal is feeling when we cant even properly communicate with all humans yet..
Its so interesting because elephants tend to prefer sounds in a lower register, because it is easier for them to hear. Every time Mongkol turns to look at Paul it is when Paul is playing in a higher octave. As if he is confused, trying to understand where the sound went, what happened, or trying to tell Paul to play lower again. Then every time Paul plays lower notes, Mongkol turns away to sway, flap his ears, or raise his trunk in happiness. He enjoys the lower sounds more and is having a more personal engagement with lower notes. When it is higher, it is almost like a more communal experience, because he is obviously curious about what Paul is doing or how he is doing that. Such a beautiful, sensitive, and intelligent guy.
The stillness and attention of this lovely elephant gives the beautiful piece of music more respect than many humans these days. Beautifully played. ❤❤❤
Elephants flap their ears when their happy or they like something. This big guy loves the piano, that also means they're intelligent enough to comprehend music...
Oh of course they are. They're extremely attentive to social cues, they gave great memories and pattern recognition. Even though you can't imagine what is like to be an elephant, they certainly share a lot with us.
They don’t comprehend anything, animals don’t have brains like we do. They just hear something that has a good tune and begin to flap their ears. They don’t need to comprehend anything, because they can’t.
American here, but man, there really is something about Elephants that I feel sets them apart from other animals. Somewhat like Horses, but it's much more intense with Elephants. You can really tell that these intelligent animals are thinking and processing what's happening around them. The fact that we mistreat them is a very shameful thing.
JCam I just meant it’s not like I’ve spent any time around elephants. But any fool can clearly see they are intelligent whether they have been around them in person or not.

2:00 AM on November 3rd, 2024, a moment of simple peace, watching an elephant enjoy a personal performance of this wonderful piece of art, petting my cat as she sleeps in my lap.
beethoven famously hated elephants and frequently hired poachers to kill them for their ivory tusks, only to let the poachers keep the ivory for themselves, as a kind of poacher prank/cold blooded elephant assassination. this satisfied his need to be mysterious and the smartest person in the room, while also assuaging his lifelong phobia of elephants because of their inherent wisdom and memory. he had made many mistakes in his life, and the thought of a nearby elephant both wise enough to understand his mistake and eidetic enough to remember it kept him in a state of constant paranoia that elephants were spreading rumors about him. in a way this video is ultimately a complete spit in the face to beethoven, who was an elephant racist for really weird reasons. it also serves as elephant retribution, finally allowing an elephant ancestor to hear the music they were so deliberately deprived of so many years ago, by a proxy murderer and coward. you should learn more about beethoven before you say something so ironic and so uninformed.
@@tonoornottono Source?? Aside from whatever inane falsities you thought would be a good idea to make up, Beethoven - being German - actually loved elephants as they were powerful like the Prince Electors and always remembered slights against them (just as the German Protestants remembered the transgressions of the Pope). I think you might be projecting your own insecurities as Beethoven often *was* the smartest person in the room - people around you must have paid more mind to him while you desperately begged for attention. Wouldn't seem so farfetched as whatever drivel you bothered to write, completely unprovoked, bore barely any resemblance to reality and seemed more as a sad, broken person making a desperate last grasp to forget about how little people care about him. Look inward.
This old elephant outlived many of his friends, his body nearly destroyed and visibly deformed, mentally tired. I see a great deal of contemplation as he just stands there and taking in the music. I hope he lives his remaining life in peace

The Anthropmorphism is off the scale among you plebs. This isn’t Disney and the elephant isn’t getting emotionally moved by this particular rendition of classical art to the point of tears. Music like this calms them. If it’s sad there’s probably a reason.

Does he wish the old bastard would stop making all that racket? Does it bring back memories? Does it make him miss somebody? His reaction is obvious but, i've no way to translate it and it's killing me lol...
What really makes you wonder is whether it can feel those moments of tension then joyous release that music will create. I know the brain has to learn how to hear music and it's obvious that this elephant has listened to that piano more than once coz of the patience it has. If it has spent enough time listening and growing brain pathways, it may even be able to anticipate the hints at the direction that music will give you as it progresses along a piece... and that is where the music also begins to emotionally reward the listener as well. It does make you wonder if that elephant has developed that coz it sure seemed to appreciate it... :)
@@pex_the_unalivedrunk6785 That's an interesting question. In his time such a thing was not frowned upon yet. They didn't comprehend animal cruelty the way we do today. Activists had not really taken up such causes yet. Elephants were still an exotic mystery to most of the world. One would hope mankind has not always been so wasteful.
Elephants are extremely intelligent, they remember every memory, every moment, every song, every bad thing you do to them. And it sticks. They can enjoy music, they even cry out of their temple when one has passed. They have ceremonies for the dead. They had trauma. They have scars. They feel love and hate.
I think it's because mankind is on this planet to have moments like this, to be caregivers of the planet, not to live in unrest, but in harmony with the other creatures.

Everyone's commenting about the music or the elephant, but I'm here feeling very impressed that someone hauled that piano out there to play for Mongkol. Mad respect.
It seems music speaks to elephants in many ways, including wild elephants. Here in South Africa there used to be concerts of small orchestral groups, performing in the Kruger National Park. The audience took their chairs out beyond the fence of the campsites/lodge, and settle down in a clearing in the bush. It was well-known that after a short time the human audience would become aware of movements in the bushes, trees and grass around them. Wild elephants had heard the music and come to listen. They stood quietly and fairly close up, and calmly listened. As long as the human audience did not react suddenly, the elephants were quite content and calm, just listening. When the recital/concert ended, these gentle giants would turn and quietly walk back into the shrubs and disappear. Quite magical. And these were WILD elephants.
@@kcl7864 No, sadly. They were/are organised by the music club here in Johannesburg, and to get to one of these concerts involved a long road trip (bus) plus accommodation in the lodge, plus ticket to the concert. It is all very expensive, and sadly my budget doesn't stretch that far. But I have heard several first-hand accounts of these magical events.
Elephants have large veins in their ears that use to cool their bodies, like a dog pant. They move their ears quite often, and although it can signal excitement, they're often just doing an autonomous movement, like blinking. Tail swishing and eye movement is a better way to tell whether an elephant is calm or relaxed.
If only Beethoven himself could see how his sublime emotional piece of music transcends species...True proof of the absolute power of music and the harmonies.

@Nadia Charoensuk you're right, description: Mongkol is a 61-year-old former logging elephant. His captive-held life was spent hauling trees in the Thai forest. His body shape is deformed through hard labor, he lost his right eye and tusk in this brutal logging practice. Mongkol was rescued and brought to Elephants World to spend the rest of his days relaxing peacefully in freedom by the River Kwai. I discovered Mongkol is an extremely gentle, sensitive elephant who enjoys music, especially this slow movement by Beethoven which I play to him occasionally in the day and night.

Elephants can hear in subaudible frequencies and you can clearly see him responding to the lower frequency notes with more excitement. That said it's awesome.
The hearing range of an elephant ranges from as low as 5-16hz to as high as 12,000-16,000hz. A piano is 27hz to only 4,000hz, so even the high notes are well and truly within the hearing range of an elephant. (A human is 20-20,000hz)

Elephants are known to be one of the few animals that can truly appreciate and understand music. You can really see that he is interested in what you are playing, listening intently. This is really beautiful to see.
Personally i think cows and certain types of birds also enjoy 'Human Music.'
Parrots are total music lovers. even budgies will bob their little heads up and down to the beat and mimic melodies. Big parrots will often straight up sing along. It's not just that they're repeating things, music is good for their mental well-being, and it's a recommended part of caring for a bird to play them music, sing to them etc. They're wonderful animals. (just make sure it's not too loud obvs)
@@wademichalski768 So it's not as much as enjoy it, many animals can enjoy the music but not many can understand it. Elephants are known to be able to understand rhythm, tone pattern and even the emotional tone of the music. as well as enjoy it.

Hard to know. He lived in a different time and AFAIK didn't have to idea to play to animals himself.
Are there character studies about him?
They say elephants remember forever, if true. Then hopefully so :)
beethoven famously hated elephants and frequently hired poachers to kill them for their ivory tusks, only to let the poachers keep the ivory for themselves, as a kind of poacher prank/cold blooded elephant assassination. this satisfied his need to be mysterious and the smartest person in the room, while also assuaging his lifelong phobia of elephants because of their inherent wisdom and memory. he had made many mistakes in his life, and the thought of a nearby elephant both wise enough to understand his mistake and eidetic enough to remember it kept him in a state of constant paranoia that elephants were spreading rumors about him. in a way this video is ultimately a complete spit in the face to beethoven, who was an elephant racist for really weird reasons. it also serves as elephant retribution, finally allowing an elephant ancestor to hear the music they were so deliberately deprived of so many years ago, by a proxy murderer and coward. you should learn more about beethoven before you say something so ironic and so uninformed.

I dont think the world is miserable at the moment. It's the best time ever to be a human.
Elephants can hear in subaudible frequencies and you can clearly see him responding to the lower frequency notes with more excitement. That said it's awesome.
I noticed that, but had no idea why. Thank you for the explanation. 👍❤🐘
@@robocathy359 I had thought about that. Time to play some 19th century Russian choral music for the elephant!
The hearing range of an elephant ranges from as low as 5-16hz to as high as 12,000-16,000hz. A piano is 27hz to only 4,000hz, so even the high notes are well and truly within the hearing range of an elephant. (A human is 20-20,000hz)
Read this as I saw that part! Sweet!
L'arte ,l'estetica, la bellezza, rende visibile l'invisibile e accomuna tutto il creato tutte le creature
It is so touching to see this beautiful elefant listen to this beautiful music. It is a real miracle - to present to elefant possibility of cleansing of his pain. You are real wizard and a man with a glorious soul.
My mum was an accomplished pianist and when she would play all the dogs and cats would lie down on the rugs and just listen ❤️
wow:) how beautiful ♥🐞
If animals are brought up with music it brings them comfort. I am sure they were so happy every time your mum played for them.
That's beautiful...
Great classical music has divine power u can also play like her if u take a firm decision to learn the piano
I've seen videos of babies and toddlers quietly weeping when listening to classical music, it can be so emotional
There is a place in the world where Moonlight Sonata is played to elephants. I cannot think of a more wonderful thing to say.
Bro it’s a green screen
what if there were two places
Is the elephant even enjoying it though

Kochari Asger Get hecked you heckin’ doomer. If you’ve never been to that place where the animal instinct lives alongside Beethoven then you’ve never lived. Spoiler alert: it’s beyond any base human experience, so far; ecstatic! SAD.
@@evesofia9722 wha?Did u just wrote Mozart then edited to Beethoven?Lol
Kochari Asger Yes! I momentarily thought Moonlight Sonata was Mozart. Shall I take myself to the salt mines, or will you cart me off?
Edit: same error + grammar! Oh dear. Salt mines indeed!
I’m only confused that it was Mozart because I have it sitting on top of a couple of Mozart sonatas on my piano, you see. I play it rather well!
This should be in a children's story book. So wonderful.
Indeed it should
