Thank god someone is going over this piece. I have this sitting in my studio and I am perplexed by how much it can do. And its so cool to look at. Everyone seems to always show love to the blue one (the EMX), but this one deserves as much if not more IMHO.

I think youtubers lean themselves towards immediacy ,so EMX being a synth, gives instant results without the trouble of doing up your samples first and then demo'ing them in some sort of arrangement. Personally I think the SD versions of EMX/ESX were the best grooveboxes from Korg.

I also have one of these, bought well over a decade ago and I've never used it. It's good that someone out there is still covering this machine. EDIT: Also, Octave One uses one of these in their live sets.

@@Flashback_Jack it took me about 5 years of owning one to actually decide it was time to lift the hood and get my hands dirty. Only then did I realize JUST how badass these things are. It's ... everything.

I have, without a doubt, the most advanced and comprehensive ESX video/tutorial collection on YT. There is an ongoing playlist on my channel, dating back 13 years. Cheers!

Old school synth guy here. I've collected and used a lot of fancy gear over the years, and I do mean A LOT. A shocking amount. Whenever asked what my desert island piece of gear is, "the ESX" without hesitation. I use it so much that my current band (-ism) is basically built around the it. .... maybe I'm just trying to justify owning 3 :D "well, that one is the backup for my primary backup" :D
    :D

Wow that's cool man. Old school synth guys tend to be very critical of consoles like this, I'm glad you didn't jump on that bandwagon!

That's a very soulful machine! The tubes add to it's luster. Record to tape to add saturation and lo-fi nostalgia. I've got a few of those vintage boxes/synths. They only increase in value.

Oh yes! The wonderful sounds of the elect tribe series. There’s something I just love about early groove boxes from the 2000s, They give me vibes of all sorts of things I’ve heard back then, that may or may not of used electrode on the song. Please do more Groovebox! And don’t forget my voice, Tommy called her videos. God bless you buddy.

Arguably the best electribes from Korg, especially the SD version - as nobody is using the smartmedia cards (smart WHAT?!). The valve tubes do make a difference, but they are running hot and need a lot power (check out the size of that AC/AC adapter - it's a BRICK). SD version was made more power efficient and added some sounds, although presets were always "oh, it's an electribe" sound pallette. Still, 8 bars and all functions clearly laid out on top panel, are something that is immediately lacking on the current electribe 2 series.

I had one of these was way too complicated i only used it for drums even then it would mangle the drum sounds into what sounded like synths to the point i would forget what i had done to get the normal sound back.
when the screen menu on my one started blinking and couldn't change samples easily i sold it

it might be confusing if you havent already got used to the older electribes. it seems to add a lot (too much) which is nice for electribe users but probably not optimal to grasp from 0. i have an es-1 and it is straightforward to grasp it all
