I think Yamaha Dx200 / An200 / Su200 deserve an honorable mention. I had MC303/505 (now I own its keyboard version JX305) and used all the Electribes products but still use DX200 + EA1 + ER1 to this day What I like about EA1 - Instantly sequence two mono step sequences into outboard or daw. It’s especially great for auditioning patches on Virus TI or other Va ER1: Instantly sequence drum patterns. It’s especially great to record drum outboard into RM1x or instant drum XOX patterns into DAW. I enjoy sequencing drum parts into mothfXF using ER1 sequencer. dX200 - I live mangling DX / FM sound modulation, really cool op/carrier combinations with envelope / LFO modulation. great 1 bar sequencing with realtime step rate/recerse/ cut-time/ double-time on both baseline/synth part and drums. I live recording midi performance with the realtime midi effects / cut/double time/ retiring /drum roll forward backwards effect into 32+ bars into daw or outboard. An200: same as above but with live va engine sound Sp202 and su200: great ~30 second sampling and loops with lofi built in effects. Great for making great lofi tones and loops
I own a 2004´Electribe ESX-1 and this unit is very cool to create new stuff with own samples. 2 years ago I purchased the Electribe Wave for my iPad - this is cool too 👍
I really liked the EA-1. It's best feature was using the audio in as a midi clocked audio gate. I used to play distorted guitar power chords thru it for Shamen Move Any Mountain style riffs.
Great video. I was on tour in 2001 and came across the ER-1 in a music store in Portland. I drove everyone nuts for the rest of the tour. I think I may have to find another one. Terrific explanation of the machines- I hope #Korg kicks you something!
whipped out my EA-1 and it's a ton of fun, because of the limitations but also because of it's hands-on ease of use. I also have the EMX, which is a beast, and just thinking about it makes me smile, though I am criminally not using it enough. I did get the volca FM because I wanted an FM synth, and it serves it's purpose, but yeah, the volcas are no electribes, I don't think they were intended to be that. Was (still am) on the fence about getting a new electribe blue, since it's polyphonic and it base sound design pretty good, but arguably lacks the charm and workflow of the original things.. It would be more from a collection perspective anyway. I do see a comment about the Elektron model:samples - I have the model:cycles and concur, these devices are VERY electribe-ey. In the end, as far as grooveboxes go, I think the EM-1 hit the nail on the head MOST in terms of value for budget back in the day and that original workflow just can't be beat.
tell me why i just literally found a “korg EA-1” on facebook market and i get it delivered in a couple of days , i definitely would love to talk privately about your take in great detail and advice you would have as a new owner of this machine …
i literally have a ton of questions about it and can i connect a midi keyboard to it would be my first and is it mono , or poly and can you switch from one to the other ??
I totally enjoyed that. I loved the original electribe series. They where all so well designed and very playable, We had such high hopes for the E2 but it was a huge let down. In comparison to the originals, the E2's are a downgrade. Then Korg continued to dropped the ball when they released the Volcas. It felt like a slap in the face to the dedicated electribe users, We needed an upgrade not cheap toys.
My favorite ones are the EM-1 and the ES-1. The EM-1 is my baby. Man that machine was my first ever beat machine ever and I absolutely love it so much!!! ❤ I love the presets on that machine so much as well!!!!
Iv used them a few times but never owned one my friend has one I might see if he's selling it .. I was gonna buy the newest one that samples but was not sure if it chopped samples or if it was only for one shots so or loops so I got the novation circuit rhythm instead I still plan on getting the electribe two..but I think the MPC is the way to go
@@User-wq9ri I love the primitive nature of the MC-303 where each track is either a percussive sound or lead. I used my unit as a sound module, and less about crafting songs within it. Usually I sample it through Renoise.
I’m sorry but I hate the modern electribe sampler sounds dead and it has a clunky work flow, at least the old esx has an amazing tube boost love the sound
@@BeekuBird A "Tracker" was not conceived of until The Ultimate Soundtrack was made for the Amiga. Therefore, things similar to program behavior before it cannot be called "trackers."
I think Fairlight CMI is considered the first music workstation. The walkstation concept was a portable workstation. For sampling only, MPCs predate walkstations.
great info. i own an er 1 , vocla drum, and a vocla fm. Volcas are great concepts but the execution makes it counter intuitive. Musicians need quarter inch outputs. LOL. ER 1 is a workhorse for sure.
I have a few Volcas in my setup currently and it is definitely kind of strange that they use 1/8” outputs. I have the Volca Keys Bass Drum and FM1 and they’re fun to play especially with the built in sequencers, but they’re not at all comparable to the Electribes. I’m not sure which Electribe to go for, but I know I would definitely go for one of those before an MPC or SP. Just have to figure out which one would vibe well with my MicroKorg 🤔

Recycology is such a boomer. He wanted me to let everyone know that.
the EMX-1 deserved way more love, greatest machine i ever owned
strange how taste work : the EMX is so pretty into its blue dress ! the most beautiful !
totally agree. I only got it for the blue dress. I have no idea how to use it. (yet)

I watched this all the way through waiting for you to get to MY model of Electribe EMX 1, and you said it was ugly : ( I'm going to cry in the corner

Thanks for the history on these 😎👍
great overview, thanks! EMX blue was a blast for me, still love it.

I have a battery mod for my EM-1. To think, they have the tech now to just flat out reissue them again and give a few updates. We can dream.
Yes they could give us battery powered em-1 with inputs, outputs, analogue filters... Sd card. But no.
i never knew they made that many. they all look so similiar. i would get the ones that could sample though.
The ER-1 is my first machine - bought it second-hand around 2004, and always stuck to it. Solid as heck too.
What korg added on the emx/esx are actual tubes, but maybe it's only worth mentioning when you make gabba or hardtek
gj cataloging
only missing the original black & gray cases for lowercase electribes (ES-2)
I have an ER1 which I still use. The EA1 is a killer piece of kit as well. Great vid !

Heh, good video. I wanted to know the differences between these various Electribes and this was perfect.
to this day since 1990's i can help but have an electribe in my set up. it just dos'nt feel right without one
Esx is basically the green and red one combined and emx is blue and black one
Korg, bring back the e-m1 tribe with modern updates. That was the best one they made. :)
Because of the pad And full keys
model samples is like an es1 on bath salts it is what the electribe 2 should of been.
Awesome video, I’ve done a bunch with electribe!

The EMX-1 looks and sounds awesome to me haha it is blue
Thank you for the information ! !
I love doing my own thing in a funny way.
Big shout out to Realicide!!
I guess they tried to make esx and emx to look more "metal" in the heydays of indie music. Didn't age too well. Still very capable and fun devices
I have an em1 and an emx still jamming with a roland sp808 250 ex. ....
Me too bro! check my videos I crush with an 808 and emx!
I had a choice between a Roland mc-303 and a Korg er-1 at the music store back in 2000. Unfortunately I chose the mc-303.
The MC-303 is a classic. Even the MC-101 echos it's workflow and production.
@@pilleater I'm thinking about using the mc-303 as a midi master in a dawless setup. I was going to buy a keystep pro but then the price jumped $100.

Yamaha's "walkstations" were released before Roland's "grooveboxes".
Well, we don't say "walk stations" to refer to the paradigm of all in one drums and synth song machines, do we?
If you're leaving out the portable aspect, the workstation concept is even older.

Ha! My old EA-1 in the thumbnail.
I miss my ESX it was fun to work with.
I miss the EM-1.
They're still around at pretty decent prices. I overspent on mine by shipping it from Japan, but no regrets. I'm madly in love with this thing.
Ha I have that avenue d record and an es1... never put it together that’s where the sample was from
EM-1 and ES-1
2:58 ahahahaha good fuckn video dude
this video is seriouslt so good thanks for making this
Lol this guy sounds drunk and high at the same time
I was.
hate the emx looks too. people actually like the way it looks.b
I like the look.
EA-1
Mine is er 1,I have em 1 2…..I don’t rate the new Electribe
