Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world's most hated audio tools. Today we are going to talk about the Korg Electribe EM-1 Music Production Station. Can this all-in-one music production tool from the year 2001 give us the sound of the 90s??? Is it on par with its more famous sibling, the Korg Electribe ER-1 rhythm synthesizer and can it keep up with contemporary grooveboxes like the Korg Electribe 2, Akai MPC One, Roland MC-101, Elektron Digitakt or Teenage Engineering OP-1??? The 90s called... they want their crunchy lofi samples back.

The 90's called to tell us their music was freaking awesome
❤️❤️❤️
💖
😎🤘
Mmmm mmmmm 90's music kicked A$$
I'm convinced that you don't sleep. I don't know how else you find the time to put out such high quality content week after week. Every one of your videos has great writing, meticulous editing, amazing bangers and an ungodly amount of memes. Just brilliant.
Thank you so much!!! I just try not to mess around too much
He read a lot of books, people who read a lot of books talk a lot! And a lot of weird words.
Vierd vords
@@jimiscott yeah, he put an extra touch on them.
He has a team to help, im sure. Or he goes on meth benders and he will crash soon 😂
jams in this episode were absolutely mint, can't stop replaying
Thank you so much!!!
!!
expecialy last one!!!
I’ve bought one of these units due to how good it sounds in this video 😂.
This box sounds like it could produce an entire soundtrack for a PS1 game.
So true!!!
It constitutes half of the drums in Metroid Prime Trilogy, and some synths in it!! Really powerful. you have a vst from korg too
Wipeout XL anyone?!
*nevermind it's ER-1
@@hadamanathat game rules!
I think this bad boy actually sounds great, that filter is baaaaad!
Superbad
So bad it's almost good
Perfect use of that Bob's Burgers scene! Sometimes I identify with Gene a little too much 😄
Oh, the Cap'n, what an honor. Yeah, Gene is strong in us all
Just found my EM1 after 3 years, just cleaned all the pot contacts and it still works perfectly. Now I have to remember how to use it again lol
I like those 90s sounds, especially in the last jam/recording with the extra processing on top of it. It seems more capable than I expected.
Yeah, it takes processing really well!!!
Ah, Electribes. Had a full set of the mark II versions, but found their limitations too much. Can definitely see why the ER1 is so well loved.
Nice!!!
I had the entire first series.
The ER1 must be connected to a distortion pedal.
Ever..never used clean.
The same thing for the volca drum.
It's fantastic✌🏻
@@Sandelec-gm2cl Nice! (Makes sense, heh.) Are you into industrial, or just a fan of distorted drums for other reasons?
Yeah they are limited as hell. But if you have some other kit, you just learn to use them for what they can do. I bought the ESX-1 as the brain for my setup and it was a huge mistake back then when I didn't have as much gear, but now that I have more stuff, I'm so glad I kept it for it's absolute filth and workflow that always inspires me in some unexpected way.
@@inthefade the best brain for setup is the EMX1. (5 midi channels)
You can control 5 synths parts and connect to midi whatever you want.
I have the Red and Blue from 2007.
The complete drum kits..the effects..
and the valve sounds..
does the best combo of many years ago.
Today I have other machines...
but if I want the classics drums..
I turn on electribe ✌🏻😀
I've been watching this show for ages and it just now hit me that, while you render a verdict, you never say whether the gear is "bad" or not. Well played.
I loved this. I think I enjoy the gear I have no interest in more than the ones that convince me to buy another machine (*stares in Tom Cat*)
I only say that it's bad when it's REALLY bad;)
I always figure if the gear gets a third jam, it is good gear.
@@hillbilly8621his third jam is what made me realize it had potential 😅. He always does stellar work on those third jams, not taking away from the others. He’s a master for sure. I just love that he manages to show their entirety, limitations and all. But when stacked with gear… so epic!
In the early 2000’s Korg had a flash version of the Electribes you could play in the browser including the ER-1. It was a lot of fun!
Nice, I need to check that out!
I could hear you were inspired by this gear, and when you mentioned at the end it is one of the most fun gear I got a confirmation.
Thanks for yet another great review.
Thank you so much!!! Always a pleasure!!!
Man, at 1:05 You hit us with early 2000's trance, then some acid and dub! You definitely know how to take my attention from the news on TV :)
Always a pleasure;) Thanks!!!
I have the EM and ER, and pairing them like you did is awesome. I also clock my MS2000 with them, for midi-mistimed sequenced hijinks. The mix combining the three is quite smooth. Korg had it going on in the late 90s/early 2000s.
Ya, my er1 main function is an synced gate/delay for my samples and background audio. And going chsssssssssshhhhhhhhhh.
Nice setup!!!
I bought a Korg EM-1 about a year ago. I absolutely love it. I mostly sample tracks from it either into my daw, digitakt or mpc. It's just so immediate and fun for jams too.
Nice!!!
Only a few Electribes left to review. I look forward to you getting the EMX-1, which, I believe, was the pinnacle of the 'tribes before the "2" dumbed it all down.
I really have to get into the 2nd gen
Holy Molly i really dig the character of the EM1. Very nice little tunes you made from it as well. Great video as always!
Thank you!!!
The aesthetic for this is STRONG! I feel like the only thing this is missing is a Roland D-Beam 😂
Lol, so true!!!
6:09 You know it's going to be a banger........
Thanks!!!
I thoroughly enjoy this show and always look forward to it every week. I would like to see more better gear episodes.
Thank you so much!!! Working on one!!!
FWIW, some talented techno producers still have the ER-1 in their live/daily setups. The bass drum sounds are still relevant to this day. 👍
True that!
...its amazing to me how limited most, or all, grooveboxes are today, sometimes lacking features that were common in sequencers from 1983... like polyphony
Cutting corners;)
Somewhere it's Mother still loves it.
;)
Finally. Had this little beaut sat in a drawer for over 15 years I should think at this stage. From time to time i bring it out and always pleasantly surprised again and again by its charm.
Yeah, instant throwback!!!
One of the first pieces of gear I could get my hands on in my late teens/early 20s and actually liked... Sat next to a novation x-station and a JV-1010, all of which played along well. The whole setup has been featured on the channel by now, if I'm not mistaken.
Never sounded clean or modern, even for the time, it just did its own thing with a gritty, boomy, almost bicrushed sound to it. But it was crazy fun, hands-on, and guaranteed to put out something groovy whenever given some time. Jams were hot. So much better than the grey/blue faced snoozefest that now holds its name.
This is unironically good gear in my book, Mr. Pilz. Greeat video as always, by the way ❤
Thank you!!! Wow, great 90s setup!!!
I am in love with the second jam. And those old electribes are such a breeze to use. Octave One uses or at least used this one on stage for drums, which I understand. Easy to use and surpsingly nice 909 samples.
Thanks!!!
the second jam hit me too 👍🏻
the memes in this episode were especially amazing! this gives me something to look forward to every week. thanks so much for all you do. ❤
Thank you!!!
SO GLAD you finally got to feature an EM-1! I love my Electribe 2 to pieces, but this quirky little machine has always tempted me: thank you for showing us what more capable hands can do with it, most of the videos I've seen are like 12 years old and not the greatest.
Thanks for watching!!!
Haven't even seen the video yet, but I've already dropped a like as I know it will be a banger by just seeing the thumbnail!
Thank you so much!!!
Repeating myself, but there seems to be nothing that you can’t make a frack with. Love your work my man.
Thank you so much!!!
I still have mine. Nice to play around with every now and then. Love your videos best thing on YT.
Thank you so much!!!
Love those presets, sounds like my entire highschool.
That trance line at 1:06 is something I still hear today.
Yea it sounds quite familiar. I swear its in my playlist somewhere!
Preset A01;)
@@AudioPilz absolutely slaps! They should make a whole genre out of it hehe
Sounds similar to M3 Bailamos. I thought same thing, sounds very familiar. Just a similar pattern
I ended up only ever using the Electribes with audio ins, for stuff like Shamen/System 7 style gated guitar. Having an Electribe clocked to a drum machine then running aux sends/Line 6 Pod to the Electribes aux audio in and using it as a gate always sounded epic!
Ah, the tempo gates of Electribes!!! Pure magic!!!
Also very nice for rhythmically chopping vocals.
Absolut geil....immer wieder erfrischend und informativ..und Sound und lustig und und.....
Vielen Dank!!!
Awesome ! I own so many of the ER1s, EA1s, and ES1s for fun off the cuff jamming but have always found it hard to find an EM1 but my search must continue ! Inspiring and hilarious as always.
Thanks!!! Gotta catch them all!!!
YES!! This gets a thumbs up before even watching it! I will NEVER sell my EM-1! And now that the Shaman has taken his sonic screwdriver to it... Oooooh!
The Shaman is a legend! Thanks!
I don’t have much space for hardware anymore so the iPad app has to suffice 😂 the 101 and 404 take up all my space.
My dawless setup in 2010 was this Electribe, a Microkorg and an Alesis Micron....this video brought back a lot great memories from that time. You verdict was spot on, it's not that great compared to other stuff, but it's super fun and intuitive to use, and for that it's still a great piece of gear.
Nice setup!!! Thanks!!!
I’ve never been the biggest fan of EDM but you make it sound like the best thing I’ve ever heard
Another great show!
I have two of the originals, red and blue that i just bought and forgot about before diving deep into.
I forgot what they sounded like and the raw sound is my thing!
Tonight i shall work my way to the back of my storage, rescue them, plug them in and jam.
Thank you Florian!
Thank you!!! Definitely worth giving it another try!!!
For me, the winner of the electribes was the EMX-1. The sample version was good too, but there were better sampler options. With both of them the ribbon/slider combo was SO MUCH FUN to play live. Put the arp in the key you're working with, program a melody and "hijack" it for fills and ornaments (including drums). Super easy to record live sequences that way too. Such a unique piece of gear
All about the Tubes of the EMX1 and ESX. The Holy Duo of grooveboxes. Why in the hell did I sell em, I'll never know.😅
Most of them was faulty and the rest literally died as of now
@@GityaLIVEdnb yeah, I had at least one that was borked, tried to get it repaired and that did nothing. Honestly though, if I had one now i'd want it for the sequencer rather than the sound engine
I really have to give that one a try!
PLEASE DO EMX-1
@@AudioPilz
I'm never gonna use my banjo on w record but I sure love playing it - there's nothing at all wrong with having instruments that are fun to play with a sound you really enjoy despite not being musically 'useful' in your chosen genre
Nice analogy!!! Well put!!!
The EM-1 and ESX-1 will always have a special place in my heart.
❤️❤️❤️
Been waiting for this one!
It was about time!!!
@@AudioPilz 🤘🏻I believe there is a modified firmware due out (soon?) for this unit too; maybe a better gear episode for the future?
Wow! I really loved this machine
Same here!!!
Someone brought one of these to synth night last week! It sounded great but we're all suckers for 80s and 90s sounds haha
Nice!!!
Damn, you gave me GAS for a second! Superb video, really loved the first acid jam - wicked!!
😀😀😀
Was für'n Tune am Ende 👌 mega geil
Besten Dank!!!
I had one of these briefly during my first DAWless period, around 2010-2011 or so. I can't really remember what drew me to it other than that I got a good deal on it.
I listed it for sale on craigslist and got an offer the same day. Went to meet the guy in a parking lot near my house, up pulls a (definitely self engineered) lifted pickup truck, out steps a guy wearing overalls, sandals, and no shirt, who runs up to me enthusiastically and exclaims "Man I've always wanted one of these!". I think about that interaction a lot and I often wonder what kind of redneck EDM he came up with.
That guy's basically me;)
I propose to step up the Electribe game and review ESX-1. Absolutely legendary sampler with fantastic fanbase till this very day (looking at you SnowMetal).
Damn, you're right. It's about time!!!
06:53 Perfect illustration!
Thanks!!!
Yessss I’ve been wishing for another electribe video! Not my emx but close enough!
I really have to give that one a try!
I still miss my er1 and es1 mII. So much fun.
Great duo!
За мем "очень плохая музыка" отдельно лайк . Приятно что вы чтите , так сказать , мемные традиции других стран . С любовью из Крыма .
Мем 🔥
With Weatherall, Keith Teniswood rinsed the mk2 versions and pulled them inside out to give us Tiny Reminders 🙏
👍👍👍
final jam was impressive, great video.
Thank you so much!!!
It’s pretty crazy to think you are more able to successfully create and monetise what is essentially industrial music than the majority of the industrial music fandom. I suggest a vocal fx pedal episode. AudioPilz for the Terror EBM messiah!
Thank you so much!!! I've always been fascinated by EBM and industrial but never even dared to think that I could actually produce it❤️❤️❤️
@@AudioPilz There’s a million sub genres now, so don’t worry, everything you’ve ever done will probably fit in to one of them, providing you took as little time as possible polishing it and spent a small fortune of Demobaza 😂
If you’re interested, my terrible Industrial bands were called CeDigest and Ruinizer - might be worth a little RUclips search, just to see how low the bar really is 😎
@@WVLFRVN @AudioPilz could cover the Casio VZ-1 and make some 242 style bass lines. I know 242 used the DX7/SY77, but the VZ-1 could do it!
@@AudioPilz You've definitely had more than a few jams that qualify - I say go for it!
@@this_connor_guy makes sense! Those 242 basses reek of FM
uhh, second jam provoked smile on my face lol, pretty hard to dislike this machine when i used to have so much fun dancing in a strange dark places to songs made with it.
That sums it up nicely!!!
well done as usual my man. keep 'em comin'
Thank you so much!!!
I didn't know the og Electribe actually sounded this good, might need to get one for myself now.
Love your videos man, every now and then I binge watch several at a time!
Thank you!!!
Classic EU Free-party staples!
So true!!!
These old electribes make for a nice ingredient in your tracks or jams if you give 'em a simple task. My beloved green ES-1, wich once was the center of my studio, has recently found a place as an fx box for the EMU Orbit and now they are a blast of pure digital bliss ...
Nice approach!!!
I had the entire first series.
The ES1 has a low volume..and the effect's quality is bad.
The best of the first series is EM1..because sonuds very similar to the next valve series.
@@Sandelec-gm2cl the "real" fx are really bad, but more digital sounding ones like bitcrush or flanger - I really like them!
@@andy.langusta yes..!! The chorus/flanger is the best..!
And decimator too.
Do you want a smart idea..?😏
You can use the input of electribe SX..for add effects..it' simple.
But if you program the sequencer on the "audio in part"..you can filter the sound and trigger It.
The decay knob work fine..😀
And you can divide in sixteen the audio input.
Everything in midi Sync with others machines..!
@@Sandelec-gm2cl yea man, did it all! But my SX is gone now, it was too big and had some minor issues - like the valve noise, and sometimes knob jitter... to be honest, I prefer the sound and the looks of the 1st gen. they are older but more stable and well built (from my experience)
this sound surprisingly good ! Thank you so much for the great content
Thank you so much!!!
Awesome use of All Tomorrows imagery for the jam!
Thank you!!!
I almost bought the version of this that had the vacuum tube in it. I was shocked at how good it sounded on crappy little speakers in the music store. It really did add a lot of analog warmth. I couldn't afford it though at the time it was like $500. I think it was the sampler version the red one.
I really want to have one of these!
@@AudioPilz holy crap they go for $1400 used now. The korg electribe esx-1.
More importantly if you put all the Electribe's in loose order of release it spells...
eA
eR
eS
Em
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
That last track absolutely slams❤️🙌
Thank you!!!
I enjoyed this greatly. Thank you.
Thank you so much!!!
Hmmm... strange but I like how the Electribe works, how it sounds and how it looks like. :) Good review!
BTW: If the small (but mighty) MC-101 is already reviewed then... maybe it is a proper time for Deluge? ;)
Thank you!!! Great suggestion!!!
+1 for Deluge!
Hate on the Electribe all you want, this box is so neat.
So cute!!!
This was my first introduction to electronic music production. So much nostalgia!

MIDI for grown ups ☝🏻😝👌🏻
❤️❤️❤️Oh yeah❤️❤️❤️
When Jungle took shape on the British club scene in the late 90s, there probably were only a couple of modules that could “do it all” in that field like the MC-505. This ElecTribe was probably designed only for that purpose.
Es hat wieder sehr sehr Freude gemacht 🙂!!!
Die Freude ist ganz meinerseits!!!
Was not expecting to see the Qu from All Tomorrows in a 90's groove box review
Expect the unexpected;)
Wow the mixdown of the last jam ist extraordinary clear. Not bad :D
Thank you so much!!!
I mustve missed it recently but congrats on hitting over 100k subs!
Thank you so much!!! Definitely watch the 100k episode!!!
Genius yet again..👏
Thank you so much!!!
3:38 keep it going DUDE
Classic preset!!!
high praise on this one great EP as always
Thank you!!!
Jam 1 @5:18, absolutely love that bass. Moves the floor in my home office! Patch 37 sounds great too!
Thank you!!!
7:11 jam is captivating. Nice job Florian
Thank you!!!
That high-protein jam was wonderful, if not too short-lived..❤❤❤
Thank you!!!
7:09 Ahhh yisss... odd and terrifying pictures beyond my comprehension! Fantastic. Good night everybody!
damn the jams go really hard this week, especially the last one
Thank you!!!
Hilarious videos man! I've had a few of these electribe grooveboxes back in the day. Interested to see an arranger module/groovebox review
Thank you!!! Great suggestion!!!
I’ve had an esx-1 for a very long time. And they fixed a lot of gripes the es-1 had. This thing then was the most fun jamming and live playing device I’ve had for a long time.
2nd Gen ETs are awesome!!!
I love the old EM-1 , EA-1 & ES-1….especially my modded ones.
Nice!!!
guten morgen! das video wertet meinen frühstückskaffee enorm auf -danke sehr 1 grüsse aus dem schwarzatal sendet dir pecb
Vielen herzlichen Dank!!!
i somehow think a lot of the old presets would sit comfortably in an aphex twin song lol
They'd certainly do!!!
I never pause a video more than yours holy shit!🙃
Way to go!!!
8:03. I choose the blue button!!
We all do;)
The jams where FIRE!!
Thank you!!!
honestly one of best sounding intro interpretations, everything from drums to bass line sounds just tight ! Iťs whole recreated on this electribe, isn’t it ?
It's 100% ET with a twist of mixing in Ableton
YEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! I still miss my EM1, even though I have the EMX-1 now.
Back in the covid panic buying days, I went looking for an EM1 and they were as much as EMX1s.
Nice!!! Both are classics!!!
Sounds great to me. Always loved jammin with Electribes. Easy to get lost in
Same here!!!
Used the ES1, ESX-1, and EMX-1 for almost 10 years touring and these things are built like tanks and have a ton of different sounds you can create with them, esp if you added your own samples. Loved this video, reminds me to pull the ole ESX1 back out every once in a while, cheers!
Nice classic setup!!! Thanks!
As a legally blind person I know the UIs on these are awful menu-divey pits of tar but I do like how there are now touch screens or tiny OLEDs with eleventy billion lines on it.
Hey Lexi!!! Any grooveboxes you would recommend here?
@@AudioPilz the Circuit Tracks is perfect once you memorize everything as there is zero display, the MC-101 isn’t too bad, and I really want a Deluge 1st gen as it’s all light pads. My centerpiece is a MPC One and it’s awful visually, sadly the fonts are super tiny. Also all the Aira Compacts are great.
OMG FINALLY IT'S HERE
❤️❤️❤️
