- Stimming is back. After many gear reviews, here he returns to inaugurate a brand new series….
15 minutes with...is 100% Stimming, spontaneous live jamming, impressive face expressions and accompanying dance moves, still with his kind of raw honesty and playful programming. The focus here however is what he can do with each of these machines as well as some commentary on his like and dislikes. So don’t expect a deep tutorial with every little detail.
This time Stimming chose the Syntakt by Swedish company Elektron. It’s no secret that Stimming is kind of an Elektron fanboy therefore he’s always very critical.
The Syntakt is a 12 track drum computer & synthesizer, fusing analog & digital synthesis into one all-round music mega box. So let’s see how Martin put the machine through its paces...

Sometimes moments happen in our lives that makes us grateful for still being alive. For me, Stimming reviewing gear makes up some of those moments.
Of the many Syntakt videos this is one of the few where the music that is heard is pleasing to my ears.
I think this is the video that finally sold me my Syntakt.

I just got a Syntakt last week and am so excited to watch and rewatch this. I just wish you had more time to elaborate and further explore the avenues you were going down! Love the 15 min idea but I guarantee you’d have thousands of loyal viewers who’d be even more excited for an hour of jamming and chatting. Anyway, love this regardless :)

I do prefer the review format as Stimming has such a unique voice in that space, and hope full reviews will continue on this channel, but this was fun for what it was

Great video, always fun to watch Stimming talk about gear! I wonder if he would consider releasing some of the grooves from this video as a SYX file for us Syntakt owners? They sound amazing, I'd love to look at how he made them in more detail!

I remember always using Stimming as a reference for my mixdowns as he has some of the cleanest in the game (especially his percussion!!). To know how awesome he is as a human being too, he is an exception to the never meet your heros rule. Love him!

Oh no, drei Videos mit Stimming gesehen und drei Geräte auf der Bukett List. Das Format geht auf und gibt mal tiefere und mal unterhaltsamere Einblicke auf die vorgestellte Ware. Finde die Reihe sehr lobenswert und gibt Anreiz sich eingehender zu vorgestellter oder vergleichbarer Hardware zu informieren. Top

Although I could watch Stimming for hours, I really like the 15-mins format. It might take 2-3 videos until the hastiness disappears, nevertheless I think this really might work out in the long run
So inspiring, Thanks SMM. 15 minutes with the Kijimi Synth by Black Corporation would be great. One of the most expressive analog poly synths in Stimmings hands.. hmmm.
Good stuff! Very useful and fun.
As this is a new series, I allow myself as a video creator/editor to make some small technical comments: your face is not in focus, I can recommend setting focus manually before the shoot. Second thing, it would be great to add a few comments in text, things that you would have liked to say about the specific button you push or the place the groove goes.
But anyway, great video! Almost makes me want to get the syntakt as a first "serious" synth, but for now I still have the Octatrack in mind ;)

The Syntakt really clicked for me when I stopped trying to make it sound like other instruments. It can do very strange things like turn a hihat into an ambient pad, or a bass sound into a snare, and you can morph in between the sounds, even lfo them in weird ways. Lends well to the angry esoteric music I make, so for me it's been a dream.
All elektrons are this way, they work best on their own as their own instrument. You have to really put yourself into a deliberate meticulous sound design mindset and things get rewarding very quickly
Yes, well said. I have not played with the syntakt but my experience with the digis is exactly as mentioned. The magic is outside the lines when you find yourself in uncharted territory.
Nice. Do any of you have recordings of your Elektron box shenanigans? I used to not like them but am enamoured by the Syntakt and Digitone and it's hard to choose between the two. I'd love to hear some strange music made with these awesome machines :)
Elektron machines have crazy sounding buttons. Love them though :)
Personally I love that click sound, it makes pressing buttons so satisfying.

Stimmings Reviews sind immer sehr nice weil unkonventionell, bodenständig, lustig und abgedreht. Mir gefällt der ungekürzte Stimming besser. Hier hastet er etwas wirr durch die verschiedenen Pattern und irgendwie fehlt einfach die Zeit sich richtig zu entfalten. Trotzdem Dankeschön dafür. Bin auf die nächsten Videos gespannt. Evtl. kann man auch mal andere Artists einladen für dieses 15 Minuten Format?
Ja, man lernt bei Stimming normalerweise auch immer viele nützliche Handgriffe. Vielleicht ja künftig ein kurzes Video nur mit Performance und ein längeres, das die Tricks dahinter etwas erklärt? Natürlich in gewohnt unvollkommen-spontaner Stimming-Art!

Loving this but first Elektron and lost on how to make it song length. It’s seems like preset patches so much longer than what I am making. Great videos man.
I have a Digitakt rather than this but I think one big difference between the presets and your patterns is that you need to make more use of the probability in the sequencer. For example, have a sound/step/trigger only come in every 4 times the loop goes around (4:1) rather than every bar. Or have some steps only come in at 30% probability etc. Also you can have some tracks be of a different step length like 25 steps, so it loops in a different time to the other tracks. Finally, use parameter automation to switch models on some steps and these steps/triggers can have probability as well.
Can one create the patterns in a DAW and export them to the device?
Wouldn't that ease the workflow a bit?

I just got a Syntakt and own a Digitone Key and Digitakt will this make a solid Trio combo for creating electronic music stuff ....
I wish it had more audio outputs. With just stereo out it will remain just a curiosity to me.
I think all of elektrons devices are just that, a curiosity.
That’s why it’s so impressive to see someone go ham on the octa-track, and some of stimming here was impressive but if you step back and look at the actions per min (like if it’s an real time strategy game) it’s way too high . So when simply being proficient in operating the device is itself a performance , that’s showbiz .

Is the digitakt still worth getting?
It's a sample Drum Machine with the same sequencer. So if you like samples, yes.
Samples are so different.
So somehow the spark didn't jump over this time, did it? So not for me either. I also had the device recently and returned it. Your expression "come on come on" almost in many ways for this video 😮
I love it and its gonna be often used tool in many tracks to come.

With all these sound sources, I wish there were more output jacks. I would love to at least a way to have my bassline going out its own output and have the drums going out another. The filters are great but the fx are not. I want to process the outputs on their own.
Maybe via Overbridge?
@@musictalk-tech Yes, but I want to process the sounds while performing live. By that, I mean if I want to use a different piece of gear to apply to the bass line vs any of the percussion sounds.
@@musictalk-tech Oh, I mean to process sounds when playing live. I did not think about needing more outs when I got the syntakt. I just purchased a DSI Tempest after because it has the outs and I love its sounds.

Sound great, but theres something that I do not like, like at the end of the base, it may be the recording microphone or the speakers, otherwise its good.
Why the time limit?? I would easily watch an hour+ stream

Great video and presentation. It made me buy the Syntakt and I love it. Very inspiring. Awesome device for starting a track and take it from there adding other synth/samples. Or as a core device in a life setup. This is fun and addictive… Thank you!

Syntakt is a synth too so a bit more flexible

8:23 I disagree with you on the filters on the digital engines bringing warmth to the engines. i actually find the filters to be the most cold/generic/clinical filters i ever tried the filters on the digital engines are not analog they are digital as well. and even the analog filter isn't that much better tbh. the filter on the OT sounds way better to me and that's a much older implementation.

hey, maybe I was unprecise in my wording: I meant the combination of the cold digital engines with the analog filter brings back a lot of warmth. that's pretty undeniable for my ears but yes, the analog filter itself still is on the cold/precise way of filters. its subtle and not obviously to hear but this is a quality of its own.
