I think this is the happiest I've seen Stimming during a fiddle around with a synth, not because other gear doesn't have its perks, but because the Grandmother never takes Stimming out of the flow - the momentum. He rides the momentum of both limitations and possibilities with the Grandmother and it's non-stop fun, which is the holy grail of a what a musician looks for: to stay in the flow of creativity. Great video!
Got a Matriarch and DFAM this year. And there is something magical about those instruments. They always inspire. Just don’t forget to press record before you start. You get lost in them…
The Matriarch is a contemporary classic. So is the Grandmother. But the Matriarch just has such a great tool kit. Especially if you use Eurorack at all. It’s amazing and so fast to use. And four oscillator bass sounds? Forget it. Pick a small kickdrum because your bassline is gonna be huge. Started with the GM and had to step up to the Matriarch because i got addicted. 😂
i never understood the thing about moog until i got a DFAM and shortly after added a mother32. There is indeed something magical in the sound as well as in the handling.
I have the dark version, and it is NEVER leaving my setup. I typically lean more "west coast" for analog synthesis, but the Grandmother is a perfect instrument. I get the same sorts of expressions playing mine all the time. :D
When you happened upon that murky bit at 8:37... I was listening in the other room, but came back to the computer to see you just as stoked about the sound as I was! Fantastic demo.
I don’t know if you always planned to do this vid but thank you so much for putting up with my constant asking for this vid! I am a super fan of both the grandmother and Stimming and the video did not disappoint. Dankeschön! 🙏🏻
This synth is so good, since i bought it, it's my best and main synth to make Devo , Kraftwerk style music. Creativity and intuitive , what I'm searching in instruments.
From this demo, I feel like it could be the center of a genius post punk band. Reminds me of the 90s when all those really good bands toured the east coast of the US playing smaller and midsized rooms, spreading their unique genius and never being recognized except the exuberant howls of the packed in humans of the moment...
oooh yes, I had this one and sold it in 2021, to buy the 2600 from behringer and some other things. I really liked the filter and some things with the sequencer, but it wasn't enough for me, it has good moog bass sounds that remind me of the model 15, but that's it, I didn't like using it for precusions, although it does a lot good drone sounds.
Cool video! This one has the Moog sound but it is sweeter than the old ones. . . . (which doesn't make it better, but different. All Moogs are precious)
Excellent stuff! Stimming makes me want a bigger bank balance inspiration indeed ;-) also any chance we can have Stimming reviewing someones actual Grandmother in the future?
@@christopherpederson1021 the designer told me that . Those legacy modules are out of there old modular synths . Regardless everyone loves this synth. ✌️👽
what kind of in-ear-headphones are those? Stimming, can you recommend anything to prevent tinnitus when producing music? (aside from "listen to low volumes") would you prefer headphones over monitors or vice versa etc?
@@musictalk-tech Thanks for the reply. Would you say they are neutral in sound? Looking at measurements of their frequency response they seem to roll of the highs pretty early. Is that also how you perceive them while using them? I'm primarily looking for in ear monitors for live performance, but occasionally I'd like to use them while producing and doing rough mixing.

@@musictalk-tech Thats a pitty, I really liked these. Just the right insights and some sound examples in an overall entertaining form factor. But ok :)
Now it is more focused on jamming and tweaking and less talking as we feel there are way too many reviews already and for a deeper review you need to spend way more time with a machine.
@@musictalk-tech True but not necessarily good ones. Sonicstate is nice but Loopop is more like reading the manual for example. I mean these 15 min jams are nice to extract the sound spectrum o f a machine. I have to adjust to this :) I do miss haptic ionformation though. Like poti resistance, case and how it feels. Grandmother is a plastic hoousing? That really put me off when I read that. Despite its probably pretty solid.
The only flaw in the Grandmother/Matriarch is having the keyboard CV/gate outs /Euro outs/etc. (worse on the Matriarch) on the back panel and not even labeled on top. I went with a strip of painters tape across the top of the Matriarch to label the ones I use regularly but it's an inelegant solution.
@@musictalk-tech Most synths don't have the Moogs' other patch points on top, though, so they could have made Euro integration easier by including everything on the top panel.
The CV and gate outs are on the front panel in the ARP/SEQ module. The euro out is on the back, but I usually patch directly between the GM modules and my rack modules anyway unless I want to run the whole output through a module like Beads (or a bunch of other ones I don't have yet). You can patch the LFO to your rack's VCA or filter, you can patch your rack oscillator into the GM's filter, etc. with no need for the Eurorack out.
@@kennethschumacher6392 Thanks for that. What about using the 1/8 output in the back that Stimming is using to go back into the noise channel? Or is that post-reverb? (I promise this is the last question).
