Been playing one of these in the shops. Can say that this is one of the best Moogs ever made in terms of fun, accessibility, fun, SOUND and, just the fun of it. Takes me back to when I first played a Minimoog 40+ years ago. Music is supposed to be this much fun. And these two fellas seem to be all in the fun of it as well.
These guys are a great pair for introducing gear. They have chemistry. Jack is the best hype man for synths on RUclips. Mylar is a perfect straight man with deep knowledge and an infectious desire to dig in and learn. Love it. Thanks.
19:31 You can make the oscillators drone if you connect the keyboard out into the attenuator and invert the voltage, and from there plug the inverted voltage into the pitch inputs of the oscillators. As the voltage is the same as the hard wired keyboard voltage, but with opposite polarity, the original and inverted voltages cancel each other out. You can also turn local control off, and just use CVs to control the oscillators.
ARP 2600 is the only other keyboard I can think of that had a Spring Reverb. And yup, this Moog Grandmother seems to put the best of Modular Moog + Minimoog + ARP 2600 all into one super small package. Brilliant. Amazing.
Wow it's the sound effect from Forbidden Planet 17:00. I have not much idea what you are talking about but i'm hypnotised by the sounds and your enthusiasm. I wish i'd got into music when I was young, I wouldn't know where to start now and if i'd pick it up.
DAMN!!! I was like, only 3 voices, very limiting, but the quality of the sound is epic! Those single notes are so FULL and rich similar to a real instrument soloing that adding layers to fill out the sound is not necessary.
I own a Voyager XL, and this interests me so much. When I first saw it, I thought it looked like a toy. That said, the more videos I see for it, the more amazing it seems as a musical instrument. Great video, guys.
I can tell you first hand that it doesn't feel like a toy. I sometimes just stroke or grip mine while doing other things on my computer because it just feels so solid and well-built. Great keys too.
I just got mine in black two days ago. I’m already addicted. I only wish they had built a patch recall into it. I love building sounds but loosing them or not having a quick recap of them is such a drag.
@@thomas_S.O.P. I got myself the minilogue (standard). The XD does has more features but nothing really special or worth the additional cost. However I've found that the minilogue on it's own is perfect. Full analogue circuit, built in delay and sequencer, up to a 4 voice polyphony andit has this very unique overall tone. If had describe it I'd say it's a /cold/ sounding synth. It's not semi modular but if your not entirely familiar with synthesis I'd say that's a good thing. I'm sorry for making this sound like an advertisement but I can strongly recommend.
Almost a year ago, I walked into a store wanting to buy a new VA poly synth, but it wasnt there. Guess what, I ended up playing the Grandmother....and buying it a few days later. Pure eargasms in the store = the best selling technique! ( :D i was exactly like Jack: "Woaw..." )
If I'm not mistaken, they have that super noisy patch below, then, they max the resonance of the filter that is key trackable (basically another oscillator that you can give pitch to with the keyboard) and start playing the patch as a whole as sort of a lead. Since the resonance is so extreme it works and is an audible melody And yeah it sounded awesome I think this is very do able in a prophet type synth, not exactly like that, but you can get a similar sound
Keen to hear from you all - Is there anything you would wish Moog can add to the Grandmother to give it a bit more functionality and capabilities with a firmware update?
they came with mattriarch because they listened to the custumors and what they wanted. i played both. both incridible synths, but to me , if you compare the prices the grandma is absolutely the winner. mattriarch is for ppl who don't have couple of thousends euro rack modules, because its a complete system in itself and costs almost 3 grand. the granma costs around 600-800 ( based on condition) used and you can sync it to your rac and absolutely go nuts. I will never give mine away ever again. I already bought it, sold it, bought it again , borowed it and now she came back after almost a year. now she is gonna stay forever!!!!
@@TheNimasan I think I agree/ if I had the room I would buy 4 Grandmothers for four notes but hey I don't have to, since they did come out with the Matriarch. With that said, the delay on the Matriarch is worth it's weight in gold by itself. But I do like the grandmother better.
@@dazeja have you had any issues with the mod wheel? I’ve been wanting to a get a grandmother for a while but seeing stories of people having issues with the mod wheel and pitch bend has worried me. What do you think?
Im really interested in the Grandmother. I'm sorry to ask, but how close could I get with this to Adam Holzman's lead sound on Steven Wilson's track Regret #9? Thanks.
Hey Jack as always thanks for a very entertaining video, cheers Alex :) Can you please advise how you set up the guitar? Lazy j cruiser? The moog manual makes no recommendations or suggestions for line in :( Your help would be greatly appreciated .
Hey John, thanks for watching mate and for your question. We used the Cruiser as a preamp essentially. Sounded a bit skinny on it's own so any drive pedal or compressor pedal would do the same thing and act to just beef up the guitar signal a bit before running through the Moog's goodness. Seemed to turn out ok. All the best and thanks again X
@@jackduxbury1632 Thanks Jack. You're a Bloody legend in my book. Would love to have a beer with you one day. You strike me as being as much fun as anyone I've ever known and I know some fun geezers. Rock on dude Always make me smile. Love your shows, whatever they're paying you ain't enough 😛
Interestingly, you rarely see professional musicians performing live with these. Perhaps it’s the 32 key limitation or that there are other monophonic synths with more features for a similar price. The ‘dark’ version without the coloured panels I feel is infinitely more visually and aesthetically appealing though so much harder to source
I really do like the way it drives, but I have a minibrute 2, and think this is very pricey for what it is. My minibrute can probably cover all the sounds (less reverb) that the grandma can.
That would be a bit untidy - I don’t see why you couldn’t attach a separate external spring reverb to the cables running to the verb inside. I watched LMNC strip a GM apart which shows the tank and it’s connections. P E A C E : )
Easy. Do you have $900? Get the Grandmother and then start saving for the D. Do you only have $300? Then get the D and start saving for the Grandmother. Dilemma solved 😉
Everybody needs a grandmother! Got mine today! Fantabulous piece of kit!
so fun to make noise with
Mine arrives today after months of saving. I am so pumped!

Great demo. Amazing synth. Near the end @ 38:39 with the guitar plugged into the GM .... WOW!
unreal sounds 🤩
Great overview! I ❤ Grandma
I really like this format... The synth gets explained quite well and you get an overview on its sound... well done!
Aside from a big moog modular, that’s the vibiest analog synth I’ve ever heard!! Unbelievable! Awesome video!!

Just saved up for one and gotta wait one more week for it and really cant bloody wait , it just really really grew on me .
How's it going with the old Grandmother, 3 years on?
So my list of what synths to grab (sorted from buying first to last) :
1. Grandmother
2. Subsequent37
3.Matriarch
4. Moog One 16
This thing sounds great in the video, and the spring reverb is great for some on board time effects. It's also not stupidly expensive.
It sounds even better in real life I got one
@@colourbasscolourbassweapon2135 Nice. 👍

Every-time I see Mylar Melodies, I press like.

What happens at 19:08ish? As in, how could I get that kind of sound from another synth? It's incredible!
It just sounds like a decent amount of modulation, some resonance and they close the filter a bit with some spring reverb.

Hell yes it is! Modern classic. This will be a sought after synth for years
or maybe it will be like the Sub 37; people all like it, and after two years, it gets boring and people sell it again for the next new thing ;)
Any recommendations for a good stand for this and maybe something two tiered that can another keyboard and laptop?
