Lisa Bella Donna you do rule and your review on reverb convinced me to pick up a grandmother...looking forward to it arriving so I can make some space beats
I recently bought the Grandmother and I love it!🥰 Wowzers👍 The rich Moog sound is simply amazing and there’s so much this synthesizer can do. Thanks Moog for giving us this true gift of synthesis and many thanks to Dan Fisher for showcasing this beautiful gem.👍🎹
Great demo! Really shows the depth of this synth's capabilities. Everyone was raving about the Moog One, but THIS was the new Moog that's really worth talking about. An instant classic.
i just bought one of these like 4 days ago and every time i see it or remember that i own one i still get that rush of adrenaline that i got when i first saw it. now I gotta get a dfam and ill be set (for a few weeks)
Finally ordered her. (From you guys of course) Had to buy the demo version so i could afford a speaker to play on, but idc, all that matters is ima have her.. Can't wait til she gets here Thursday. Sadly ima have to go to work and daydream about her and wait to play her after. Lol. She gonna be my first real synth, so it's gonna be alot of fun
Fantastic demo. The Grandmother and Reface CS make a great preset free combo, for when you need some polyphony. Plus the Looper on the CS can be midi synced with the GM clock.
After seeing/hearing all of the cool stuff @ NAMM 2019, I still want a GM. Maybe a GM and an Odyssey are the perfect way to turn back the clock and do some tangerine dreaming??? 🤔
I love your videos and this is another great one. I got incredibly lucky and recently acquired a Grandmother in a trade recently and after spending a week with it I know for sure this one, I won't be parting with. Even if I get the Matriarch, I'm keeping the Grandmother. It's really special.
If you are here wondering if you should buy a GM........just buy one! I was in love with the sound in the store and hesitated for a long time. I ended up buying it, even when I couldn't afford it. I have had it for about 3 months now and LOVE IT! Such a versatile and amazing synth. The sound is so smooth.
@@maxgoodrich3315 I don't think a micro and a granny can be comparable in terms of keybed. I love the micro but... a real Fatar keybed is something a bit better XD
@@Lainer1 it is fantastic! I have a JD-XI, and the keys feels like a toy in comparison to the grandmother. The feel of the knobs and eveeything is very good!
Hi @Monangel! How do you find it for ambient/sound scape sounds? Thinking about purchasing one but would like to make some atmospheric, film score type sounds as well as the phat bass tones. Cheers
Daniel: Can you hook this up and show us how it would work with some Eurorack or at the very least, some boutique gear? I would love to see how this GM interacts.
I just purchased this awesome machine. The only problem I’m having is with the midi connection. I’m trying to daisy chain a microkorg to it, but can’t seem too get a signal. What am I doing wrong?
Hi Brian. Daisy chaining implies that there are at least three devices connected. If you're just trying to play the microKORG from the Matriarch's keyboard you need to go from the Matriarch's MIDI Out to the microKORG's MIDI In. Then they MUST be set to the same MIDI Channel (which can go from Ch# 1 - 16). If they are not the same, the receiving device will not play MIDI that's on another channel. Thanks for watching! -_Daniel_
Mine sounds nothing like this before patching. Why is that? I've tried to see where your pots are and although they aren't all visible, no amount of turning or tuning can reproduce the deep sound you have here. Any ideas?
Hi inshreds. One thing I can clarify is that, other the occasional ping-pong delay and volume changes to keep my voice out front, no other audio post-processing was applied to the Grandmother. For the most possible low frequencies, be sure to keep the Low Pass Filter's Resonance low or fully counterclockwise. Thanks for watching!
@@sweetwater Hi great video. Thanks for replying. I've sussed it now. I watched it back again and noticed that you were using the left hand controls to lower and raise the pitch. Once I did this, I could match what you were hearing. Thanks.
Does anyone know if you can plug a smartphone into this synth so you can run a drum machine app through it? Instead of having to buy a drum machine to hook up to it.
Hi Purr Snickety. Audio is audio. Your Grandmother won't care if it's from another synth, a drum machine, or a smart phone. The crucial factor is if the device sending audio to the Grandmother is loud enough. If it's not, just get a preamp in between to boost the level. Thanks for watching!
@@sweetwater so could I also just plug a Volca Beats into the Grandmother? Or do I need a mixer between the grandmother and the Amplifier. I've heard both ways are right.
I'm between this beauty and the Minibrute 2S. I have read from users that when it comes to eurorack capabilities, the MB2S is more flexible, has more knobs which make it more versatile from the get go (and of course, it's cheaper), but at the same time... Grandma is a beauty, better sound, built quality, spring reverb, etc. One of those 2 is going to be my first physical synth, I'm not a novice, I understand the basis of synthesis and I have used software before. Please, help me decide.
Hi Mike. I made everything on the fly as I went along, so there's no documentation on what I did (other than what's shown on the video). Grandmother is very inspirational in real time. Thanks for watching!
I love your enthusiasm, but for us "high octave" folks, you do tend to stay in the low register not allowing some of the more subtle effects of the detuning of oscs. this is not well heard at the lower register.
Hi Matt. Because of its modular flexibility, you might be able to hack two notes of paraphony, but definitely not two notes of polyphony (without patching in some external modules). If you think you'll want to play three or four note chords, you'll enjoy the Matriarch much more. Thanks for watching!
Undoubtedly a wonderful instrument, though you rarely see professional musicians using them. The less disturbing ‘dark’ version seems very difficult to obtain unfortunately. Appearance does matter when you are spending £1000+ on a mono synth with no preset storage
This might be a stupid question, as I am very new to this, but in your description it says that you used the field recorder to record except when the delay was used. I was wondering why the delay would not be recorded.
Hi ML. I said it that way because the TC Flashback Delay is True Bypass. So, when it's bypassed, it acts as a plain piece of wire that has absolutely no discernible effect on the sound. Thanks for watching!
@@sweetwater thanks for replying. Hope you do an updated video if you find out. Wait.... u work for SW and don't have a manual??? How'd you learn what you learned? 😉
The video was made before the manual was available. I played my first Moog (a Micromoog) around 1977, then majored in Synthesis in 1980 on a Moog System 55, and have been playing on them ever since.
Like all such videos the most obvious shortcomings are overlooked. At the start he actually says envelopes when there is only one a fact neglected in many other reviews. How can you justify just one envelope in this context. Presumably its a project compromise dictated by having to come in at a preset price point as per the Behringer Poly D not actually being polyphonic at all as defined by anyone other than the fanboys (Doty) defending that particular project compro, mise shortfall of what was clearly planned due to cost problems. Though to be fair Moog does not make fatuous indefensible claims about the actual product in the advertising copy. But even so it is pretty hard to think of a full fledged synth out there with just one envelope on board.
My lovely wife just bought me one for my 65th birthday last week! I'm happier than a pig in poop!

Been waiting for Daniel to demo this synth. Love the sounds he gets.
Just bought one! Can’t wait to get started!! And thanks for giving me a brief tutorial, DF!!! (By far the best video I’ve seen on the Grandmother)
I am absolutely drooling over the Grandma! This would fit in perfectly with my (2) Mother 32s & DFAM rig.
Hi John. Who would have ever thought that would be a normal sentence ;-) Thanks for watching!
