A synth with zero sliders and only knobs is such a vibe. Vintage reissues could probably save a lot of space and cost by going with that approach, it has such a fun look to it.

    • @noahtotten
      @noahtotten 8 месяцев назад +12

You’re right about the cost thing, but I’ve found sliders at or under 40mm to use the same amount of panel space as pots! Sure, one might want bigger sliders, but imo 35-40mm is plenty of travel for parameter adjustment. typically the combination of pots and sliders is the best way to make space efficient panels.
Sliders also have other benefits like only needing a single finger to operate, meaning they can be bunched closer together, unlike pots.
I totally agree that the all pot design on this is great though!

I think this qualifies as a new instrument, maybe not just "another synth", because as with new instruments it's unique and does certain things differently from others like it. I can see this being a huge collector's item in a few decades - the one with the most cartridges and with original box in the best condition will be worth a fortune, because this is exactly the kind of brilliantly thought out thing that would get a cult around it. Even I want one and I'm a guitarist who usually does that kind of stuff with delays and reverbs and looping.

    It actually looks 80's Soviet.
For some reason this reminds me of the sounds I make with the AM-Synth plug-in.
    I think I'm in love.

Wow!!! Way cool!! Who ever invented this is awesome!!!. The Solar 42 is the only instrument that takes me to a special place above the heavens into the cosmos.🙂 love the melodies.

Thanks for talking through the various settings you were doing. There are so many synth / controller videos where you're not quite sure what's going on.

I'm a Boards of Canada fan and this is super great. So many sounds. I have a Virus synthesizer. Still working with that keyboard. Awesome sounds. Am also a bass player...so way cool.

I can’t play, but seeing an instrument like this it motivates me to learn again.

A very very cool looking, absolute monster of a canvas to work on. That being said, it sounds JUST like a Moog Matriarch... But with that Soviet filter and all the effects choices. Though less dynamic playability, which might be fine for ambient. I'd love to see this paired with the Nonlinear Labs C15.

Great to see this drone synth being used in a different context, thanks for the video!

Those light sensors could be accused of being a 'gimmick' but I am blown away by their inclusion.
It gives the machine a theremin like ability that during live performance could be game changer.
Those switch out cartridges look like a bit of draw back though. They should have been hard wired under the hood with a dial/switch that swapped between them on the front panel.
There is too much chance of loosing the entire pouch in transit or damaging the individual cartridges.

I listen to a lot of Sci-fi/ Ambient music and always feel a lot of the songs never go anywhere.

Amazing. I love the fact you can use it as a guitar pedal. I guess you could plug all sorts of instruments into it.
