    When you call up an initial patch on the Sub37, the filter keyboard tracking is set to 1:1. If you set it to O, it dramatically opens it up, and you will get the high end sizzle that is missing in this video.

    I finally got to playing a Grandmother, in the worst of conditions (a grimy synth corner in Guitar Center), and I have to say I was expecting to not be impressed, but I was VERY pleased by the Grandmother. I've had substantial time with a Moog Mother-32, SUB-37, and Minimoog, I've been wanting to play the GM. I was sort of hoping to dislike the Grandmother, but wow, the keybed is phenomenal, the pitchbend and modwheel had just the right tension to them, I actually preferred it over the feel of the SUB-37 ones. In fact, there was extra tension to the Grandmother keys, making you have to press just a little harder, and they spring back perfectly - I think it's the best keybed I've ever played. The tone was just buttery smooth - growling in just the right way. Lovely keyboard, I'd recommend to anyone. I am at a loss now as to whether it's better than my SUB-37. I'm even considering replacing the SUB for this... but the SUB has more control over tone. I think you can mimic the Grandmother tone if you set your settings just right (a little overdrive and such)

      Honestly for a newbie that doesn't understand the patch holes in the granny the sub 37 would be easier to understand since being more 'self -contained' ?? Would this be correct???

    • @corbinslaymaker3346
      @corbinslaymaker3346 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@excitationofstereocilia2103Yes, the Grandmother has wayyyyy more control once you incorporate your modular setup. That's the advantage. The sub37 has more control if you're only using the devices themselves as they are in this video. But even then, they didn't incorporate internal patches on the Grandmother in this video really at all.
      If you are into modular (all roads lead to modular) the Grandmother is most everyone's favorite controler.
      If you just like to play around with the synth itself, go for the sub37

    For me it's the GM. The unit is based on the Voyager OSC's - whereas the S37 is based around the 'newer' voiced OSC's that I can never quite get into. Plus the modules on the GM are pretty much the Sys 15 modules with a keyboard. THAT'S the Moog sound I am after. The mixer alone is bonkers. Surprised they really didn't talk that much about these differences in the video.

    Subsequent 37 >> GM, any day of the week. The extra oscillator and paraphonic capabilities alone put it in another tier. But thats just the beginning. It has two envelopes with ADSR + optional Delay & Hold, plus multitrigger and sync options, vs the single basic ADSR on GM. And the difference in the LFO situation is even more drastic. The modulation capabilities on the Sub37 are staggering, and you CAN input CV from modular systems to modulate it (with a specific caveat that the CV must be kept within 0-5 volts). And in terms of modular connectivity, of course don't forget about (a) Subsequent 37 CV which has 6 CV/gate outputs as well as the 4 inputs also found on the standard seen here; and (B) even for the standard model, MIDI and the existence of Eurorack MIDI>CV converters mean that even a standard Subsequent 37 can still integrate well as a Eurorack "brain". Beyond that: more keys, storable patches, and full DAW integration over USB that lets you fully control, play, and record every single parameter on the synth without even touching it physically, via a brilliant VST plugin. Meaning that you can record every knob wiggle & key press and hence replay your performance back identically later. Or better yet, improve it by editing those accidental sour notes you hit in the 3rd measure and dial back the resonance & boost the envelope decay during that filter sweep you played during the bridge - all from the convenience of your DAW's piano roll. But hey, the Grandmother *does* have a spring reverb.

      That’s your opinion! Never wanted the 37 personally. I ended up with the sub phatty and a grandmother, for nearly the same price as a 37 alone. I really like the tone of the Grandmother more than the 37, and for me, tone is everything. Modulation capabilities don’t matter a whole lot to me when it comes to my moogs. For mods, I’m into the hybrid synths. I have a dreadbox Medusa, and that thing has 5 LFOs and 5 envelopes and 6 oscillators, and it’s the same price as the grandmother. don’t get me wrong, I love every single synth Moog puts out! I would love to have a 37 as well!

    I used to own a Sub 37. It’s great and the presets are definitely handy for a gigging musician (which I am not). But the problem, for me at least, is it’s too tempting to just cycle through the presets rather than twiddling the knobs and experimenting, which is what owning an analog synth is all about. I sold it and got a Voyager, which is on a whole other level. But then I also bought the Grandmother when it came out. There’s something so fun and utilitarian about it that just begs you to play with it, that’s even before you get to all the patching options. The built-in reverb is also a fab touch. It’s a brilliant synth to learn synthesis on too and the colour coding makes it user-friendly and looks cool. Hard not to recommend the Grandmother unless you absolutely need the other features of the Sub 37.

      Yeah, the different filter slopes on the 37 open up a lot of sonic possibilities left unexplored in this video. Definitely biased to make the GM sound better with that high end sizzle, which the 37 is quite capable of but which is never shown in the video. I love the energy you always send out , and the “intro Indian morning Raga” vibe with that dash of the mighty Genesis and some Ozric breakfast, just had me picking up my Chapman Stick, and tweeting a little Levin’esque bird lingo, with some Deep staccato basslines,, - now too the realtalk ... I just had a tired mailman, dropping of a “Packet” for me, here in Copenhagen, all the way from youre beautiful England !
      A Boxfull of “Granny on Roids”,- and i gotta say... That machine packs a set of utubular balls of FIRE, and make having sex while skydiving, seem mundane ! ;-)

    Subsequent 37 has hardware profile in Omnisphere 2.5
    So that's what we got.
    Way more than just simple keymapping, we have the poorman's Moog One now, polyphony and all.

    I think that at 10:00 you got the patching wrong: in MODULATION , you patched Wave OUT with Noise IN. In your talking you meant Wave OUT patched to OSC1 IN (or OSC2 IN). Great video by the way, guys.

    Sub37 is noticeably bassier and meaner. Gm is like an oberheimy sound, a little brighter but more old school sounding too. Pretty sure Trent Reznor used the sub37 or minimoog, and previously a voyager. If I ever got one I’d get the sub37. Would be nicely paired with a take5.

    The Grandmother sounds so much better than the Sub37, but the Sub37's expanded features make it hard to choose the Grandmother. Would love to see you guys do another one of these videos once you get your hands on the Matriarch

    • @thes.wilsonchannel203
      @thes.wilsonchannel203 5 лет назад

      NachoMist I like to play live most of the time, so the fact that the grandmother and matriarch don’t have presets is kind of a bummer. But that’s what most modular/semi modular synths suffer from.

    • @msbmanagement7301

  • @RoomAtTheTopStudio
    @RoomAtTheTopStudio 6 лет назад +1

    Oooohhhh!! Edit out getting the sequencer wrong lol!!!
    I'll answer that one. The sequencer on the Sub37 and the Grandmother are very similar. They're both 64 steps. If you can use the Sub37 one you will quickly pick up how to use the Grandmother one without having to use a manual or watch a tutorial. They work the same way. I've only demo'd a Moog Grandmother once at the store and once I got to the arpeggiator and the sequencer it was practically the same as using the Sub37. I was kind of chuffed about that.
    Great video as usual guys. I'm not so up on the modular side of things so this was very educational for me with the comparisons. Thanks

      Caramello Koala it beats the Sub37 then. I only tried it once at the store and I only took it to 64 as I didn't realize it could go further. Thanks for letting me know. I'll try that out next time I go to the store

    Most Subsequent 37 vids on YT don’t properly demo it. You can get way more sizzle out of it by turning KB tracking off, it’s jam-packed with routing and has a huge low end. Nice vid but not showing it’s full power.

    Ok, although I know the fun here is in comparing 2 moogs with similar things, without a doubt my peacock synth can be played with a guitar and things that can be jammed for a live drone sound, can be played improvising things while another sound comes in from another synth in the filter...
    Yes, I am referring to My dear Korg MS-20 my king to do great things in a compact or minimalist equipment like an MS-20 and some guitar with some microkorg.
    None more than I play so much and the MS20 is also an ideal equipment to enter the eurorack world although its filter is a sinusoidal that can be played chromatically for sub-bass or moog bass, these things are also in others, but the MS20 does it It does so much good, it's hard not to be without that thick bass thing using 2 resonant filters.

    cool review guys, thank you for this.
    i actually learned a thing or two, and yes!..yes.. a musical instrument video review featuring actual music performance !
    cheers from Portugal
    PS: currently divided between the sub 37, and the sub-phatty.
    anyone got any input on that?
    ( for a musician getting into synthesis, from a more jazzy/organic multi-instrumentalist background.
    I’m looking for a synth that will give me this same great timbre, in a very similar lead approach as featured in the little jams on this video.)
