I own the Sub 37 and love it and all your critiques(both positive and negative) were accurate and you made me love the 37 a little more as well as want a Pro 3. Thanks for the video.
Very interesting video. I have the PRO3. My experience is a bit particular: after a lifetime of work in the field of robotics, the possibility finally arrives to dedicate myself to an old dream: learning to use a synth. I should have approached these machines with more caution, but I started with the PRO3. It was hard because at first I understood little and gave too much importance to the data on the display. Only later did I realize that I had to use more intuition and leave my hands free to rotate the knobs in search of the right sound for the moment. I realized that this approach was the right one after also taking the Take5 which has the least complex display and forces you to use your ears and search with the knobs. I am very satisfied with the Take 5 which has fantastic sounds and using it has allowed me to regain confidence and face the Pro3 which I now use with less awe. With this complex instrument it is nice to be able to discover new things every day and experiment. As for the Moog, for now it remains a dream. I am an amateur and do not find it right to make too high demands. I apologize for my English, I send greetings to all from Italy.
@@LordoftheBadgers I'm honest: I use the automatic translator and I'm not sure what I want to say will reach others. Anyway thank you, you are very kind and nice !!
people definitely understood^^... yes with a pro3 and a take 5 you are really already set very very "appropriately" in the analog space... if you add something, I would go for maybe an OPSIX or a Hydrasynth (personally prefer the OPSIX) to get some nice FM sounds and gritty digital into your mix... they complement your analog setup really well... and if the price is right you could also add a modwave or wavestate for dreamy pads and soundscapes, although the OPSIX can be quite effective with that too... if you are hardware only you could also think about a drum machine or something, so you can create complete performances.
@@philxdev Thank you very much for your advices. I like to discuss with more experienced people who have the same passions as me. I'm working hard and I think your advice goes in the right direction. I need sounds that complement the range I can use. There's little point in adding a Moog to the two Sequentials right now. In my previous writing, I didn't want to brag and I omitted that I also own a Modal Cobalt8, a Model D and I just got the Zebra2 which is now on offer with many sounds. I'm experimenting and in the meantime I'm studying scales and harmonies....I haven't solved the problem of the drum machine, which I can't use with Ableton lite...I'll try to improve, it's hard for me but I enjoy it a lot and I always improve a little . Thanks again. Greetings and good music!
@@eligioelini9194 yeah I am also always using my little setup with my daw, as I am always trying to record my ideas and compositions and make it easier to work on. if you already use ableton, there is probably no need for a drum machine, as you can realize all that with ableton.. you could defenitely check out the free and IMO very good access virus emulator ( plugin ) dsp56300. this should already ad a lot of nice digital sounds to your portfolio... and the arpeggiator on that thing is really something;)... I am also thinking about a modal but the argon8 maybe with the big keybed as the keys were fantastic ( had one on loan for a couple of weeks ). Looking at what you have... what you need is basically "nothing":PP... everything else is IMO just nice to have for the ambitioned hobbyist to be frank.. and not everybody can or should be some "G.A.S.-guzzling-room-full-of-synth-with-no-music-to show-for-kind-of-guy"like a lot of youtubers seem to be these days;) Cheers Mate
I got a pro 3 because I love sequentials filters, but I managed to pick up a subsequent 25 for a steal of a price and I can’t imagine picking one or the other. I do find myself sticking to mainly bass sounds on the sub25, while I use the pro 3 for bass, leads, arps, etc
The Pro3 is hands down the better of the two synths. I ended up selling the 37 and keeping the Pro3. You can achieve so much of the Moog sound on the Pro3 but also sooo much more. The sequences is ridiculously good and the FX are a welcome addition to the precursor the Pro2. The Pro3 is a chameleon mono/para and can be what you want it to be. The Sub 37 sounds like a Moog and not much else.
I agree there is sonic territory the sub37 just can't cover that the Pro 3 does with ease. Pro 3 is more other worldly and definitely can be a bass monster when needed.
The PRO-3 is my favorite mono synth too. You can get a very good bass low end to the sound if you put the oscillator 3 to the sine wave form and run the coarse frequency to the lowest position. Then you can put the oscillator 1 and 2 to sawtooth and let the OB6 filter do the rest. The results are very bass rich synth sounds.
FWIW, i eventually ended up with a similar combo on my BARP2600. the sine wave is the secret sauce. i put osc1&3 as sawtooth a touch detuned and that sine on osc2. then open the filter part way to the sweet spot where the speakers have to earn their keep. the sine alone is totally boring and almost inaudible, but it is the essence of the bottom end of the 3 oscillator setup
As a PRO 3 owner, I think you are spot on with this all. There is nothing I dislike about the PRO 3, yet I still find myself wanting to have a sub 37 for that low end grit. That's all that it would offer though in comparrison which to me wouldn't be worth spending nearly 2 grand on. The PRO 3 does absolutely everything I want and more and the best part is how easy it is to get to that place vs something like a hydrasynth. I think the biggest thing to add in favor of the PRO 3 on it's 3rd Osc is the ability to add user wavetables to it
Thanks for watching my friend! To be honest, nothing out there sounds like the subsequent 37 and I keep it 100% for it’s sound. To me, after having had various Moogs, it’s my favorite one and though pricey, it justifies the 2 grand every time you touch the keys❤️ I’d recommend you give it a try sometime, it makes an awesome friend for the Pro 3🔥
@@MidlifeSynthesist Apologies for the segue, as you stated that the sub 37 is your favorite out of all the moogs you’ve tried/owned, what are your feelings now on the moog matriarch? I am tempted to get one, though I am resisting as I already own a Voyager.
Sequential have gone up loads here in Canada. The Pro 3 was $2199 in 2020 and its now $2699 The prophet 6 was $3500 in 2019 and its now $4800 ish. Rev 2 16 voice was $2,619.00 and its now $3,499.00 Everything has gone up - sit and wait for 6 months if you can, and these prices should come down a bit at least.......
@@sonicneutronic interesting, the prices here in the US hasn't gone up by that much, not even close to those rate increases. In fact if you ask most vendors here for a discount they will easily grant that to you, sometimes up to 15%. One purchase I had 20% shaved off a brand new, never opened synth. Can you buy from US without a heavy duty tax ? I always heard Canada had high tax rates. If you're close to the border drive over and buy here, especially from the states that have no sales tax. Not sure what border states that applies too? I know for sure it's not New York State. When you go back home just take if out of the box and put a couple temporary stickers on it to make it look used. Those tough, bearded Canadian border guards will be no more the wiser. I remember many a night trying to get past them so we could drive into Kingston to go to the full nude strip clubs you guys had over there. Plus during the 70's my folks would cross to get cheap gas. Now it appears the tables have turned.
@@Synthshop interesting, so what prices can you currently get the above listed synths for in the US at your chosen supplier - eg Pro3, Prophet6? Final price. BTW I haven't even factored taxes on those prices.... They all need another 13% on top for HST
i picked up a pro 3 recently. the one thing that i love is the flexibility! different filter options, patching options but beyond that is so expressive and just love how the oscillators sound. The moog sound... lets talk about that for a second... sounds good but I think you dont really get the value for money as with sequential. Moog seems to be all about sound but in terms of features per dollar is really hard to beat Sequential stuff.
Interesting video, as always. When I saw people mentioning choosing Pro 3's over Sub 37's, and then I came across this video, I thought those synths would actually be somewhat similar, but soundwise, the difference between wavetable and analogue oscillators is so monumental I'd not even class it in the same category of synthesizer to even consider them candidates for comparison in the first place.
There are so many ways to overdrive the Subsequent: the mixer, feedback, and multidrive. The multidrive is a FET, and a FET is essentially a transistorized version of a tube. The saturation inside the box with the Moog has to be heard to be believed. You can also dial in some drift in the Moog VCOs via the menu. The drawback is the clunky mod bus, but I love the synth and would never part with it. To get the most out of the Sub’s sequencer, use a computer and the Moog plugin. I don’t know if it is RUclips compression, but the Sequential just doesn’t sound that good. And if I need crazy modulation, I’ll just use Pigments 4 that I bought for $100. It has modulation for days.
For the sound I'd say the Sub37. That's what I bought anyway. That said I couldn't demo the Pro3 in person so....just going on online demos for better or worse. Also the sound of something is subjective anyway. You might prefer the Pro3 etc. I think one important area of consideration, maybe most important, is how easily you can integrate either into a modern production workflow and also how comprehensive that integration is. Everything is about automation nowadays in modern production. Sub37 has a Moog released editor which works well for this. Not sure how the Pro3 fares here since I don't have one. But yeah that feature should be foremost in one's mind if this will be a production synth. In a studio I mean. For live I don't know. I don't use them that way. Great overview/comparison though thanks.
Excellent review. If you are able, I would suggest trying out a used Pro-2. It is regarded by many, including me, as Dave Smith's best modern design. The oscillators are digital, but the filter, VCA, and distortion circuits are analog. If you ever give one a test drive, it would be great to hear your thoughts on it. I am not sure why the four digital wave morphing oscillators in a FM ring and digital modifiers were dropped in favor of the two DCOs plus one digital oscillator in the Pro-3. The tuned feedback in the Pro-2 (and Prophet 12, Polyevolver, and Monoevolver) are also essential to the character.
As i own both the pro 2 and pro 3, i can offer that the the 2 vco are more useful for the average user. The osc are continuous wave shape for better modulation. The pro 3 is far superior in its presence in a mix. The tuned feedback has been perfected on the pro3 w/ more useable and musical range. The lack of the character section is somewhat compensated by the complexity of the more modern wavetable oscillator which supports custom wavetables. What I feel is missed on the pro 3 is less 1 less touch strip which lost pressure sensitivity and the lack of 2 stage serial/parallel filter configuration. The pro 2 is slightly more profound and nuanced but the pro 3 is an absolute beast by comparison. I'm constantly taming the pro 3 and always searching for sweet spots on the pro 2. So I think pro 3 is the most versatile and unless you are really seeking the most abstract sounds, it has 16x4 instead of 16x1 sequencer and 32 slot mod matrix instead of 16. The keys on pro 2 are terrible as with the p12 which I also owned. The newer sequential keybeds are much nicer and not subject to discoloration. My solution was to keep both but this isn't an option for everyone. Pro 3 has needed updates to make it much easier and faster to use. It's not exactly fair to compare these as each dsi/sequential synth is designed to be an instrument in its own right but the evolver/pro 2/prophet 12 aren't for everyone. The rest of the lineup is much more accessible for great sound and ease of use.
@@Obtunder too own both and I think your comparison is spot on. Happy to own both but I find myself gravitating to the Pro3 more often than not. Sometimes less is more. I do often prefer the Pro2 for paraphonic patching but I was surprised that I didn’t miss the additional (simultaneous) filter when patching the Pro3.
Used DSI Pro 2 is worth looking at also. It has similar fx, multitrack sequencer, CV/gate pairs for modular munging…only lacks a big knob for cutoff IMO. With the $800 you’ll save you can find something Moog-y I’m sure.
@@Kung_Fu_Jesus not that hard if you compare the oscillator structure - for myself I really like the control over waveform reset and not having phase cancelation
Have owned both. The subsequent is my favorite built mono synth. I think the oscillators blew the pro3 away. I thought the pro3 was a bit sterile and adding modulation or effects was just make up. The sub37 is a little dark sounding and I personally preferred the brighter Grandmother and Model D. I would love a sub 25 !
@@XanderEwald Fellow Brothers - i'm not sure how you are hearing that. I myself have not played a Sub 37. But im a big fan of it, the Matriarch and the new one the Muse was it? I was gonna get a Sub37, and i watched every vid on yt as i do, with gear. And then i saw the Pro3se, and watched all the vids on that, seen some really great comparisons between the two, and i think the Sub37 has slightly more ballsy Osc's, and very nice filter and everything sounds like its so dialled in - sweet spot wise. Moogs Ladder has a richer sound for sure - i prefer it. But the Pro3 has 3 filters... which filter are you talking about , when you Champs describe the sound as: a metallic, glass like sound? The consensus from the users of Pro3 ive read talking or i have talked to - we either use the prophet6 filter or the Oby6 or both - thats the sound of the synth for us. And both of those are louder and bassier, than the Ladder filter - *if anyone new is reading this. Its sounds pretty harsh to say that is Sequential's Signature sound - if they had a signature sound - Judging by all the vids ive seen - it would be a warm analog pad, from one of their polys. Don't you think? or maybe a huge stacked Hoover....
Just added a Moog Sub 25 to my rig (Sequential Prophet Rev 2 and Crumar Seven piano) and I couldn't be happier. I do use it primarily for bass and the sub osc really does make a huge difference. The thing just owns the low end and the multidrive on the filter gets you from silky smooth to chainsaw aggression in a couple moves. 100% recommend.
I've chosen the 37 over the Pro because of it's lack of effects and mono output, because I like to have the flexibility to combine with guitar effect pedals (phaser, distortion) + stereo delay and reverb effects on the mixer. This gives me a little more hands on control.
I have both. I need to let one go to get a Take 5. The Moog cannot ever leave my possession until death. Only one choice left! Seems to me that only way to know the answer to this question is to own BOTH.🤔😎
Sold my Sub37 to buy a pro3. No complaints. Moog filter is in tons of their better synths. Buy any of them for that same sound. Pro3 is just a way better synth.
I really want to like the PRO 3 and I may even get one down the road for the right price but there is something truly special about the Subsequent 37. It sounds so much better to my ears. Yes, the P3 has way more features and is easier to program but there is a tonal quality and vibe to the S37 that’s hard to ignore. I’ve been going back and forth on which monosynth to get and am still so torn. My problem with the P3 comes down to the core sound. It has a metallic sound to it where as the S37 has a much more natural sound to my ears. I don’t know what I’ll end up doing. May just stick with my MS-20, BUT it would be nice to save presets 😅
The Sub37 is a beautiful instrument, but the Pro3 is the all-round more versatile machine. I'd be happy with either, but I'm planning on buying the Pro3 to use with my Hydrasynth. The Pro3's UI is much better, and its onboard sequencer is a beast.
The "on paper" comparison so clearly favours the Pro 3, yet your intuition said that it'd be a close call - I think that really says something about your connection to the Subsequent 37. Funny enough, after this video, I think I'd be _more_ inclined to buy the Subsequent 37 over the Pro 3, if I suddenly somehow had the funds for either...
Watching for a third time. I had a subsequent 37 tribute. I now had a pro 3 se. Long story short I sold all my synths when moved to a smaller house. Recently had the synth itch, again. Got a pro 3 se. Because: 3 rd oscillator with wave tables, effects, 3 voice paraphony, mod ❤matrix, and the big one : the sequencer. Did the mood sound “better”? Probably but the versatility of the pro 3 wins out. I’d love to have both one day. Oh and the moog was unreliable. Faulty cutoff pot meant I had to do the board replacement and one of the oscillator foot pots failed so I sold it at a reduced price. I also had a moog voyager old school. Which was simply wonderful …..
Pro has lots of cool features but the 37 just sounded so good here. I have a Quantum Mk2 and its features are a bit like the Pro but with poly. Im considering getting a pure analog one but have not decided yet. 37 is a candidate also OB X8 and Moog One. De isions decisions…
Thanks for giving more food for thought. I’m still convinced that sub25 is my way to go if choosing among 37 and 25. Frankly speaking I’m a way too big of a fan of the Moog sound and slightly afraid to get Sequential instead, which is clear and functional but to my ear doesn’t have that magic Moog timbre in sound. However I was crazy enough to sell my Matriarch for the sake of a new laptop, maybe I’ll have it again sometime as this is really an amazing synth, lacking presets though due to its pure analog philosophy. Btw, haven’t seen matriarch with you for some time, are you still its happy owner?
Hello my friend! The struggle is real lol. Don’t worry though, both the 25 and 37 are amazing options. As for the matriarch I traded it a while ago but I’ll definitely get one sometime in the future, I miss it’s sweet tones❤️
About the sequencer on the Moog....have you used the FREE editor that is included with the Moog? You would go back and edit your sequencer section if you had. Unless you just enjoy wading through the knobs and buttons to sequence, the editor is the best way to sequence on the Moog it gives you a visual into how the steps are configured and allows you to just click on the parameters that you want to change. Good video.
Having had and loved the subsequent 37 for a long time, the Pro 3 adds a completely different flavor to your sound. They are beautiful together and compliment each other perfectly. Give the Pro 3 a shot, I doubt you’ll regret it👍🏼
Hope that Moog is the Ferrari.. She's my baby together with the Eventide Space. Test that combo next time. And also, try the Sub 37 Editor, to discover the sequencer potential in the Sub 37. Maybe you change your mind after that..
yea i had both, ended selling the 37 for all of the reasons you described......I regret it tho, shouldve found a way to keep both.....one cant replace the other......i learned that the hard way.....hate buying synths I already had, lol...guess it's an ego thing....so I have been around the block trying to get that sound again and i've bought and sold a few moogs (sub phatty, little phatty, voyager) to no avail..gonna pony up and just buy another subsequent 37 soon🤷♂, i honestly didnt understand why that thing sounds so good until you explained it in this video...that sub osc is magical....only thing that comes close is the sub osc in vintage Rolands....
I wish I had hands on before making a purchase, but I'm literally in the middle of nowhere (and I don't drive). I chose the Pro-3. It just seems to be something I can have a journey with. So many possibilities, and folding feedback while staying in tune?
I’ve been debating the subsequent 37 vs pro 2, thought I’d decided moog for its simple playability and classic sound. Now thee Waldorf iridium’s come along and thrown me into a quandary. Aware it’s a different beast altogether It would make a great mate for the iridium but at these prices not really an option? Tough call 🤔 What do you lot think?
Great video, love your style! Yes, the Pro3 can make all sorts of sounds....that I'd never use! Moog on the other hand has THAT sounds right out of the box. Maybe it's an age thing, I was around when Moogs were pretty much the only game in town, and perhaps i spend my days trying to recreate those days/those sounds. My dilemma is Sub37 og Matriarch. Pro3 ...not on the list 😉
@@kierenmoore3236 meanwhile I have come to agree with you, the sub37 doesn't really have the fat moog sound. Why when you compare filters and oscillators you play low keys on moog and upper mid on pro3? Instantly get impression that pro3 is thinner which is not the case at all.
Yeah sorry for that, I realized that after uploading it. I just tend to use my sub37 for the lows and the pro3 for leads, that’s why I naturally used them that way when I demoed them. For anyone reading, the Pro 3 has SERIOUS low end as well👍🏼 thanks for watching my friend!
Subsequent 37CV is my Moog choice. You’ve reminded Pro3 is my future pick for DS. Spend ducats this year on ARP2600m while it’s accessible and on sale (amazing btw). And last year was Buchla 208c….. how many mono synth would you need? :) because exactly as you made a point - unique makes them all important and inspiring.
On,y reason for me to keep the sub 37 over the pro 3 would be the kick bass which is hard as hell but I just sample it up and sell it in. The pro 3 is amazing and next is the take 5
Little story on this actually. I did somewhat of a round trip. I had a sub37, and I loved it - but obviously it's got some limitations and some other filter options would be great. I tried a pro3 in store, love at first sight and I thought "wowee this thing will replace like 4-5 of my things!" So I waited till payday and picked one up and put the s37 in storage to see if I'd miss it before I sold it. I had it for a few months, and for while it did cover some bases (easy pun opportunity there) I felt there was sometimes just a magic missing from it, but then I started to dislike it, I'm not sure why but it didn't invite me to use it as much as the s37 did. I felt like I was fiddling with it way more. The mod wheels to me felt super super cheap, keys didn't have that nice resistance I liked on the s37 - didn't spring back the way I'd like. It's weird - there was a lot to love about it, the other filters were great. But the lower volume on the ladder annoyed me. I think that's the best way to sum it for me; it wasn't one thing that made me dislike it, just a lot of little things, I eventually found the extra features a little overwhelming. (probably because of my busy day job.) I ended up missing the moog and sold the pro 3. I haven't really missed much at all*. I think I was more in love with the potential of it, not so much the actual thing I used it for. (Ugh, same as this Jupiter X I'm about try and sell. Too, toooo fidgety - but that's another story) *I do miss the screen and mod matrix from it from it though, absolute dream. But those were for playing around, just finding patches but never really used for anything. That's be fine if it were cheap but it's not. I do miss that sem filter, but I only used it for super simple patches. Honestly comfortable with the s37 again. But if someone could bring out something with a sem filter - like an erebus sized sem mono or duo, i'd be over the moon. I think I'd rather two machines that are more inviting to use to use.
Appreciate this story. Gassin for the Pro but not sure I’ll deep dive into sound design. That sequencer and the onboard effects seemed like a blast though.
I think I am the same, tempted by all the bells and whistles of the pro2 but the sub37 just looks so playable. And tougher! Figure it will last longer and retain its resell value better. On the edge of picking one up but the shiny bells and whistle of the Waldorf iridium are singing it’s siren’s song.
I’ve had a Sub 37 tribute for years and love the sound. Not even contemplating the Subsequent 37 as its not much of an upgrade and Sequential gear rubs me the wrong way.
The dsi synths I’ve used have an immediate and wonderful sound, like the pro 2 for example is huge sounding . The moog I use can sound like no other, but you have to work for it. I couldn’t pick a favorite sound out of them.
Not to mention, preset morphing, custom wavetables and 4 possible variations on the sequencer. Don't forget extensive cv controls which also allows passing of audio rate modulation.
I have the sub 37 and I totally agree about the sequencer, it sucks but.........The sound is amazing. Like you said, together with an elektron device ,you can solve this issue by using the elektron sequencer.I did the same in my studio. I would NEVER sell my Mooooooooog
i have, and love, both, but i wonder if you’re too much in the honeymoon phase with the Pro 3 (2 months) to give a fair assessment. but i agree, the sequencer on the P3 is 🔥🔥.
A really nice review and overview. The Moog for bass seems so solid to me. Harder to get that filter and “ooomph” from other things. But yeah, not as versatile as the Pro 3.
For better or worse I'm moving and need to lay off buying gear for the foreseeable future, but wow are both of these bad boys on the potential list for whenever I do start buying stuff again!
I have both, and I can’t say one is better than the other. Though there is a decent amount of overlap, there’s also plenty of non overlap and uniqueness. Get both if you have the money. With the 37, you’re going to want to get a decent reverb pedal for it though. As said in the video, the pro 3 has more range of sounds, but nothing beats that rich Moog punch on some of the duophonic patches, and the aesthetic look of the subsequent 37 is hard to match.
You forgot to mention patch morphing with the Pro-3 in OS 1.2. I own both and couldn’t part with either because I just can’t that Moog Bass from the Pro-3.
Nice video. I got the Sub 37 a few years before the Pro 3 came out. When I saw the video where Dave Smith showed Nick Batt the Pro 3 at whatever show that was I remember thinking, "hmm. That does everything the Sub 37 does, and then some." If I was in the market today I'd probably buy the Pro 3. But since I have the Sub 37 I don't "need" the Pro 3. The Sub 37 does everything I need from a mono when I perform on stage. A question I have is: Are the oscillators on the Pro 3 as stable as the Sub 37? That's one thing about it that I really appreciate. It's pretty much in tune from when you turn it on until the show is over.
My Pro 3 is possessed by a benign ghost. After warming for 10-15 minutes, it will make a parameter change with no user interaction. It does this only once per session…really weird behavior. Sequential said it might need a board replacement, but the issue is so small, it hardly seems worth the effort. As for favorite mono synth…it is the Moog Sirin. The box is small and the sound is huge. If USB didn’t create a ground loop, it would be perfect.
Some analog synths need to warm up, but it might also be that you need a _power conditioner_ to (1) find the sweet spot for the synth, and (2) to keep constant voltage. Power conditioners give you what they refer to as clean power. Lots of different types of audio work better with them.
0:09 Please help me choose which one would be a fetter fit for me. :D I had to go back and listen again to see if my ears were deceiving me. :P Thanks for another great presentation, Mid.
Both have been on the GAS wish list for a while and so this video raises a new question…. If the Pro 3 covers the ground of the Sub 3 but we agree that “we owe it to ourselves to own a Moog” then which Moog would be the best complimentary companion for the Pro 3?
The Subsequent sounds way better to my ears. That with a Prophet Rev 2 would be a perfect combo for my mind. If I want other stuff I’m sure my VSTs can handle it.
I sold my 37 to buy the Pro 3. It might’ve been just me but I couldn’t get the moog to have an edge or sound aggressive. I loved the warmth and vibe but i wasn’t able to get the sound out of it that I was looking for.
its not you, modern moog is just too dark and muffled sounding. the oscillators lack high end frequencies to begin with, and the filter doesn’t open fully either. Also the mod bus is digital so modulation depth for oscillator or filter fm is just weak and dull sounding.
New subscriber from Sweden, I really enjoy the content of your channel, Very informative. Quick question, which one of these would be the best choice next to my prophet 10 if I supposed to use it as a midi controller as well? Appreciate your help.
Great video! Quick question . When changing presets on the moog. Is there any way of knowing where each knob is set for that preset. I know on the pro 3 there is a "show" button. Thanks.
Hi, the Moog Sub 37 has been on my GAS list for awhile. On an impulse, I bought a used Mother 32 for my first Moog. Any thoughts on the tones compare for Pulse and Saw between the Sub 37 and Mother 32? Happy holidays.
I still don’t know…How can one survive without the Moog Bass? Pro 3 can sequence my P5 and provide effects. But I’m not In love with oscillators. Tough call. 😅
Great channel. Would love to see your hot take on the Hydrasynth. I don't know if you usually cover digital synths or if you've ever had a chance to look into it? Just got the explorer and fallen in love
For those who already have keyboard and control surface(s) in place (though the Pro 3 sequencer is amazing) and do not care about the at best mediocre Pro 3 effects the SE-3X also warrants serious consideration in this space. Also the ability to have 2 fully articulated voices on a Matrixbrute plus the extra octave and modular integration (for some) might make it a "better" choice for some.
@@novalogue yes, personally I would take a good condition Pro 2 over a Pro 3 any day. Then again I would take a good condition pots edition MEK over either one...

@@klstay has the desktop evolver the same guts - if so I´ll use this as a reference I guess the just planned to make a kinda cut down Prophet 12 and in the feature make another synth with a stereo signal pathway apart the pro series to bring out even more synths instead of combining everything into one - usual marketing
As a long term owner of the Pro 3 I have some important facts to notice regarding this synth: 1. Ladder filter. It has the option to compensate for the volume loss which greatly affects the signal loudness and drastically changes the resonance character. It sounds a lot more like a Moog with that switch disabled and has a lot more pleasant resonance peak! So if if you want to match the creamy sound of your favourite Moog synth don't turn it on. And you will need to set oscillators level quite low too, at least 12 o'clock. It will make the sound even quieter and you will need to compensate it manually with the general volume control. After that you will notice that the ladder filter is a little bit noisy ;-) I have managed to make it sound exactly like my Moog Grandmother. And after that I decided to sell my GM, because why keep it if it can be matched almost 1-1. 2. To make oscillators fat like on the Moog just mix in some triangle waves on your Pro 3 oscillators. That will add that fat bass bottom we all like in our Moogs. 3. Automating Attack , Decay on ADSR is tricky. It doesn't work like you expect it. In sequential they believe that the higher the rate of the Decay the faster it is. So when you turn the decay knob clockwise during automation it will actually make it shorter! Counter intuitive indeed! 4. You can easily recreate 303 sounds by using SEM filter with high resonance and enabled glide. I think it sounds even better than 303. But you will need to sequence it from external midi as the native sequencer doesn't allow you to join notes of different pitches. 4. You can make multitrack sequenced patches by automating volumes and pitches of each oscillator in paraphonic mode. While doing that you will discover some unfixed bugs ;-) 5. There is no good patch librarian software from the sequential and you will need to buy a 3rd party program for it. But there is a free solution anyone can use. The web-site "presetpatch" will allow you to save your presets, share them and upload patches to Pro 3 all within the browser window. Quite handy! I shared my multitrack patch "Sweet Dreams" there which recreates the famous song we all love. Check it out. 6. The best way to upload custom wavetable to Pro 3 is using Serum to create a 16 frame table and then use the site wav2pro3 to prepare a sysx file. Pro 3 oscillator has a really good interpolation between frames so in most cases a simple operation in Serum to limit the wavetable will work just fine. If you have a Pigments synth you can easily upload some amazing wavetables from its library.
Thanks for those comments! I'm presently trying to decide between the S37 and the Pro3, and I was leaning towards the S37. But now if it's possible to get that Moog sound out of the Pro3, then my decision becommes more difficult, lol. Also, what I would love to see is these two synth being available with 44 note keybeds.
I think both are great but would serve different purposes. When I think of the 37, it makes me think more bass, funk, etc. The Pro 3 gives me more of the pad-ish, space, brass vibe. Both sound great but it would be hard to chose one as a do all.😅
I love the Moog 37 ... however, my April 2022 unit went bad, the filter cutoff potentiometer went bad and now need to replace the PCB .. tearing the unit apart, pulling off all the knobs and replace the entire PCB. Just curious, anyone else having any filter cutoff pot issues ?
Hard choice. Really hard. I’d like to try Pro3, Trigon, Prophet, ob-6 , but not sure if it will ever happen. Just to have at least one analog synth with signature sound would be nice, mainly Prophet or OB-6 or its siblings. Nevertheless i’m happy with what i have
I have had both and prefer the Moog. Very low quality by Sequential, avoid the wood special edition, the wood in Sequential is the worst made, at Arturia level. Moog is another league. Moog is the Ferrari and Subsequent 37 is the one to choose in fact it replaced my Voyager always in the shop to repair, minitaur, sirin, ...
Really? I’m a cabinet maker and synthesist, the walnut on the SE version of the Pro3 is stunning. It’s also a stunning synth, just different to the Sub 37
I own the Sub 37 and love it and all your critiques(both positive and negative) were accurate and you made me love the 37 a little more as well as want a Pro 3. Thanks for the video.
yes to the pro-3! it is incredible...
You have very good English - but apologising for that IS VERY English! Ha ha
I went with the 37! Very satisfied!!
The sheer weight, density and ooomph of The Moog bottom end... there's NOTHING else that comes close... Perfection!
I have both and can attest, the Moog owns the low end.
Wow, fantastic review on these two amazing synths!
Moog synth prices went up by a lot in Canada a few months ago, and I think Sequential prices have mostly stayed put. This is a timely video for me!
Here in Spain..the same..the Sub37 near 2000 euros...before near 1500euros
Sequential have gone up loads here in Canada.
The Pro 3 was $2199 in 2020 and its now $2699
The prophet 6 was $3500 in 2019 and its now $4800 ish.
Rev 2 16 voice was $2,619.00 and its now $3,499.00
Everything has gone up - sit and wait for 6 months if you can, and these prices should come down a bit at least.......
@@sonicneutronic 1200 savings for OB6 keys, 800 savings for OB6 desktop
i picked up a pro 3 recently. the one thing that i love is the flexibility! different filter options, patching options
but beyond that is so expressive and just love how the oscillators sound.
This is true, plus you get an extra osc and more mod control. I have both but the sound of the Pro3 is so much more analogue without even trying.
@@Kung_Fu_Jesus not that hard if you compare the oscillator structure - for myself I really like the control over waveform reset and not having phase cancelation
One point in favor of Moog: they provide an excellent software editor/librarian *for free*, and this makes it very easy to build complex sequences.
I've had both, and the Pro 3 just has this metallic, glass like sound I couldn't get passed. I'll definitely get another 37 one day though
Ive never heard that, anywhere. maybe its you.
I have the same, want to like it, but cant stand the tinny sound 🎉
@@craigmoran893I get what he is saying, it’s the Sequential signature sound. Some people love it, others can’t stand it.
I have both and I agree, the pro3 I’m considering selling for a poly sequential it does not sound as good as the Moog.
I went from a subsequent 37 to Pro 3 SE. the Moog has a little more character and burn but the Pro 3 can do most of that and a ton more.
Isn't that the Subsequent 25? The're some differences between the Sub 37 and the Subsequent 37.
Seems to me that only way to know the answer to this question is to own BOTH.🤔😎
Tone, simplicity and aesthetics go to the Subsequent 37.
Versatility, interface and features go to the PRO 3.
Can’t go wrong either way.
its actually very easy, you can go to sub37 territory with Pro 3 but not the way around plus Pro 3 doing exponential much more
Sold my Sub37 to buy a pro3.
Funny enough, after this video, I think I'd be _more_ inclined to buy the Subsequent 37 over the Pro 3, if I suddenly somehow had the funds for either...
i now have both
Solid video, subbed.
Thanks so much🙌🏻
You'll change your mind. Sub 37 will be your go to over time. Simplicity. Tone is King and nothing touches the raw sound of the Moog. IMHO.
I totally get it!
Would do you like more about the Pro 3 in comparison to the Pro 2
Good video.
Great video. Own a subsequent 37, would love a shot of a pro 3

Too, toooo fidgety - but that's another story)
*I do miss the screen and mod matrix from it from it though, absolute dream.
I LOVE MY PRO 3!! its absolutely amazing. im gonna guess thats the winner before watching the video
HAHA i was right!
I need to watch the video, but what about Matrixbrute?
My favorite mono synth is the Voyager Performer Addition, but I might get a Pro 3 for easier touring and variety
I have the sub 37 and I totally agree about the sequencer, it sucks
but.........The sound is amazing.
Like you said, together with an elektron device ,you can solve this issue by using the elektron sequencer.I did the same in my studio.
I would NEVER sell my Mooooooooog
Would be great to know what patch you are using during the demo, especially the Moog. Nice video, greatly appreciated.
I own both the subsequent 37 and pro 3.
It would be so hard to have to decide between them.
Same situation. I love both and no plan to release any of them.
When faced with this choice I picked the MatrixBrute lol.
That’s a great synth, Sonia the Pro3. They CV together beautifully.
i have, and love, both, but i wonder if you’re too much in the honeymoon phase with the Pro 3 (2 months) to give a fair assessment. but i agree, the sequencer on the P3 is 🔥🔥.
Molto diversi. Pro 3 è un fantastico incursore, ma se vuoi un suono dolce hai bisogno di Moog.
Very diplomatic my friend 😂
So glad I held out from getting one of these and just LOVE my brand new Yamaha Montage M6 with that INSANE AN-X (Analog sounding) engine😍
This right here❤️🙌🏻
You forgot to mention patch morphing with the Pro-3 in OS 1.2.
@@commodoor6549 Thanks, this sounds like a good plan. I’m definitely going to give this a try.
@@chriserikbarnes Thanks and good luck. Have a Happy New Year.
That is a known issue, contact sequential and they will get it sorted out.
I had to send mine away for 2 weeks but no problems a year later.
This is due to a faulty resistor they used in a certain batch. Can be fixed easily by a technician in half an hour.
0:09 Please help me choose which one would be a fetter fit for me. :D
I had to go back and listen again to see if my ears were deceiving me.
The Pro3 covers all of the Moog sounds, plus alot more. Don't need a Moog.
Outstanding video Mr. Midlife.
Would you be able to share your opinion between the Moog Subsequent 37 Vs. the Sequential Take 5?
man thats a bit of an apples vs oranges. an expensive mono vs a cheapish 5 voice poly?
Now I'm wondering about ASM Hydrasynth in comparison to PWM Instruments Malevolent... 🤔
😱
Great thoughtful review. I’m curious how the pro 3 handles bass versus sub 37 ?
Thanks for the vid! would have liked it tho if you would have played lower notes on the pro 3 :)
As a owner of Sub37 I found it saddening. Nonetheless- why is nobody comparing pro3 with pro2?
For those who already have keyboard and control surface(s) in place (though the Pro 3 sequencer is amazing) and do not care about the at best mediocre Pro 3 effects the SE-3X also warrants serious consideration in this space. Also the ability to have 2 fully articulated voices on a Matrixbrute plus the extra octave and modular integration (for some) might make it a "better" choice for some.
Then you should also consider the Pro 2
@@novalogue yes, personally I would take a good condition Pro 2 over a Pro 3 any day. Then again I would take a good condition pots edition MEK over either one...
@@klstayInteresting to hear about the MEK - seems like a real classic
@@novalogue stereo signal path start to finish like Super 6 in super mode. Plus a modulatable delay line per side (in addition to a 3 tap overall) BUT no phase offset on the LFOs and only 1 assignable EG instead of 2 so you cannot assign 1 to each side both set differently, but Super 6 cannot do that either. If only Dave had decided to keep those features on the Pro 2 which has more EGs and more LFOs which have phase offset.
@@klstay has the desktop evolver the same guts - if so I´ll use this as a reference
I guess the just planned to make a kinda cut down Prophet 12 and in the feature make another synth with a stereo signal pathway apart the pro series to bring out even more synths instead of combining everything into one - usual marketing
As a long term owner of the Pro 3 I have some important facts to notice regarding this synth:
While doing that you will discover some unfixed bugs ;-)
Also, what I would love to see is these two synth being available with 44 note keybeds.
this is a very helpful comment!!! thank you for taking the time @V.Popov
I think both are great but would serve different purposes. When I think of the 37, it makes me think more bass, funk, etc. The Pro 3 gives me more of the pad-ish, space, brass vibe. Both sound great but it would be hard to chose one as a do all.😅
Get em both!
Great and informative, ive never really got to grips with my pro 3,but its has its powers
Out of my league yet I'm here to massage the algorithms. Highly skilled synth player. I knew it! Nice job. Stay safe!
I appreciate that greatly brother🔥🔥🤟🏻
as you say if you are buy a pricy synth you have effects... equally a sequencer.. so both moot points while you decide which..
Buy both
Nice video! Do you still have your polybrute?
This is easy, I own both of them! They are not in a competition because they are not the same thing whatsoever
I own nine different synthesizers and modules. Pitting them against one another is a Fool's game
Why choose. Own both.
Choose Matrixbrute :)
The best of the bests: Aston Martin vs Bentley!
