The bad gear intro is the soundtrack to my weekend starting. I think AudioPilz is playing Pavlov with his European audience so we will like him more :D
I have come to lodge an official protest. This is quite possibly the best device I've purchased, not saying it's the best device, I just know that this thing solved a massive drum machine problem for me. The synth element is actually a pretty sick bonus that makes this one of the most fully realized groove boxes I've even owned.
I get the feeling bad gear is t necessarily "bad gear." I think it's more about showing that it doesn't matter what you have, but rather the fact you can make awesome pieces regardless.
I'm so glad that you call them out on their business model and how simple it would be to add polyphony, an arp, and some other stuff. Maybe they read that and feel a bit introspective. Let's hope for a firmware upgrade down the road! I doubt we'll ever see sample playback though. Cheers!
You're in tricky territory this week but you continue to tell it like it is! As a Digitakt fanboy myself. I bought the Syntakt on pre-order, but found it fairly disappointing and solid it while it was still hot. It is exactly what it seems to be: a Model Cycles with some Rytm Mk2 voices hot glued into it shipped in a Takt box. It's really useful for those that had neither device but utterly pointless for those of us that are working on our third cup of the Elektron Kool-Aid and are more than willing to shell out for a does-it-all-Elektron-holy-grail.
@@GuitarsAndSynths I have both and find them to be pretty decent together. I get why people complain about the stuff from cycles, but I'm not going to buy one of those anyway, so having that, with extra analog voices + stereo analog filters and effects from the digitakt is pretty great. I think it serves it's purpose of the being a nice all in one device. I do find it kind of funny how the hate is driving the price down, because I think as soon as someone uses it to make something great, it's going to go back up. The new engines from the last update go a long way towards addressing some of the earlier issues I had with the device. Personally, I find that RAW analog engine much more user friendly than the engine they borrowed from Rytm.
TL;DR, I think the syntakt is a nice all in one box, does a few things better than rytm and it's pretty useful if I want to write an entire track on the couch.
Well what if this is the dilemma.. I don’t want to spend hours recording samples off all my analog gear and perfect it to fit into Digitak to then face limitations with samples albeit I heard it’s an amazing machine to manipulate the samples. I wanna just get up, plug in and go and make beats to jam with. I’ve been on the fence the last 8 months between them all since I also don’t want to spend 1 grand on the Rytm. So with that being said. What’s recommended here? Is it worth to just get lost in the sauce of sampling where again I’ll spend hours recording sounds off my Moog’s, Andromeda, Juno’s, Korgs and Roland’s to put into a box that then my ADHD kicks in and I get up and walk away? Or just get a box that can…. “groove” and call it a day? I played on the Models Cycles and to me it’s too limited and felt somewhat boring 😅 I also have the same alesis little drum machine he used here as a wingman too xD
You have become the high priest of music technology - your evaluations are precise, even if they can be uncomfortable for some at times. I love how the Syntakt get a thumbs up. Love your work mate
Completely different beast than the small and mighty MC-101. However... MC-101 is a little jealous about these 12 tracks and parameters lock. Great video!
I love my syntakt for ambient and downtempo basslines. But yeah, it can take a while to dial in sounds for a single box jam. Great work as always, keep it up!
Great episode (as always). I love my Elektron’s. For better or worse it is true though… they all are different enough and inspiring enough that you want them all. Happy Syntakt owner here :)
The Elektron Syntakt is a Model Cycles who started taking steroids only to develop a guilty conscience midway through the cycle. For the price of one of these, you can get two Model Cycles and an analog drum machine. Or three of the Sonicware Livens. Or a Circuit Tracks and a Microfreak.

Once upon a time, these limitation would've been because the hardware of the time truly could not do more, unless they made it three times more expensive... But when you were describing these limits I was wondering if Elektron did it so it wouldn't canabiize sales of other models. Which you then nicely mentioned at the end. Once again, I am reminded of the Synthstrom Deluge which doesn't have any of these artificial limitations. But Synthstrom only have one model - it isn't in their interest to put these limits on the Deluge because there is no other model to compete with it. :-)
@audiopilz - Side thought - I'm not sure if you want to break the formula but after a year plus of your videos, I think a sort of taxonomy of bad gear video would be fun to watch. I'll be honest. Syntakt was the greatest synth/drum machine/groovebox I've ever owned. I absolutely loved it. Until I didn't. Syntakt, Digitakt and Digitone together are fantastic. But just jamming got a bit tired, grew up and I sold the lot and got a DAW 😂
Awww, you were so close! I pair the Syntakt with Ableton Live. Overbridge along with song mode makes it so easy to move from a jam to a multitrack arrangement in the DAW. It seems like the Maschine workflow is working for you though. :D
@@peaceful_1 never managed to bond with Overbridge. I gave it a go but that was during my DAWless headphase. I was so anti-DAW but the overall raw sound from my Elektron gear never sounded professional enough. Maschine opened my eyes to how DAWs work and I'm now 100% Logic based an I don't miss DAWless/hardware at all 😊
Your just in the middle stage where the wonders of DAW's are intoxicating... your almost at the final stage where you realize that each is just a tool, and neither of them are really important, when the music actually comes from you. You are the best instrument. Anything you use just facilitates the outcome.
@@peaceful_1this is sort of what I want to do, using ableton but can’t decide between Digitone or the Syntakt as my first box. I love the FM sound and synthesis of the Digitone, as I own an Opsix and the Digitone has arpeggiator! But this video blew me away with the Syntakt as well with plugging in a mic and doing Vox stuff in sequence to then the overall clarity and versatility of the Syntakt. So limitations aside for I too use ableton.. which one would be wise for me to get first? I can see both being so much fun! I also am a sucker for dark ambient techy sounds hence why I first was entranced by the Digitone. But the 3 jams he did in this video.. made me transport somewhere .. and I liked that lol So.. Digitone.. or Syntakt? 😊
Dear Florian, Thank you for returning our floor model. We couldn't help but notice that the Elektron box now contains one TD-3 and several 2004 issues of Tape Op magazine?? -Klangfarbe
If the Syntakt sounds a bit too clean, well then Elektron has another machine to offer: The Analog Heat might bring the distortion and glue you are looking for :)
@@AudioPilz freshly announced ruclips.net/video/3Ja8SvxIsIo/видео.html for just 999 credits. wait if you turn that number upsidedown its 👹👹👹😆 I'm afraid I will buy that too. double heat!
@@AudioPilz It was my first piece of gear. Bought it in 2002. Does a bit of everything, drums, bass, synths. I initially didn't like it because I was making hip hop beats and it was made as more for accompanying guitar players. But I learned the basics from it. The pads are positioned in a unique way resembling a guitar neck. But I rediscovered it and have been boosting it's cheesy old synth sounds with FX pedals. I love that it's portable and use it on the bus. It's bad gear in the sense it's from 1993 and has the obvious limitations of it's time.
What comes next for Elektron is what excites me... A completely refreshed big box line up. Im going to spend a lot of money the day they release them 😂😭
@@AudioPilz honestly, I want 3... 1 with all the Analog synth/drum capabilities, 1 with all the digital synth/drum capabilities, and finally the sampler to end all samplers... Give thanks to the elektron gods🙌🙏😂
Actually you can already unlock Overbridge, analog voice cards and an IRC client on the Octatrack by inputting a special sequence known only to selected Elektronauts forum users who will reveal it to you for a blood sacrifice.
It has a lovely, rich and punchy sound, And with the elektron versatility it definitely has a valuable place on the table. Thanks for another great vid!
A month into making electronic music and my setup is a Syntakt controlling a Minilogue, Moog Grandmother, and a Roland TB-3. Riding that Bad Gear wave.
Awesome, this video shows how quickly you can get going on an Elektron machine if you are familiar with the workflow of a previous model. Your "little" tracks kick ass, Audiopilz!
what does he mean 3 of the analog sounds are identical? also, i want oneof these due to the gnarliness of the distortion and LFOs and SUPER apparent easy linear worlflow... BUT does the cycles do this kind of thing? i want this so bad everytime i hear it
@@AudioPilz thank you so much for your reply, but I still don't know what that means! haha.. like... their attack and decays are locked together as the same? so no deep long kick and a short raspy snare? I'm sure I can find what you mean somewhere... I just haven't yet! haha thanks bad gear dude
I was starting to feel uncomfortable about owning a piece of gear that wasn't on this show...thanks for sorting that out 🖤 . I've had it for about half a week now, loving it.
Hi There, another great video. I have owned several of the item featured on your show. In some cases they were purchased after seeing them here. Anyway, I saw you covered a plug-in a little while back and an audio tool that I think is worthy of your treatment is ZynAddSubFX. This little synth is one of the most most beautiful sounding things on the planet but is also a completely super complicated time vampire. I revisited the new Zyn-fusion incarnation in the hope of a usable ui, even paid them the £45 for a clear conscious, but still have not managed to successfully install it!
Had this terrible intrusive thought about a Synth obsessed couple going through a rough patch; "Babe I'm really needing an Elektron-style workflow to this relationship, and you're giving Volca which is Valid but not my vibe."
I desperately hope that the theoretical "Bad Gear - The Ticked Boxes" album release contains Jam 2, because wow I'm in love (and not just with the snare)
It would have been so much cooler if it was the analogue section plus a sample player (like Model:Samples) instead of an analogue section plus FM. Like, when you add in the drums from the sample-based SR-16... that sounds great. I'd much prefer to have that kind of palette available inside the Syntakt than all the FM machines, but that's just me.
@@tezeta3725 Lots of elements are recycled and remixed across the 3 tiers of their product line at this point so I don't see the problem... You could just as easily say a Digitakt is a less flexible version of Octatrack, and yet it seems to be one of their most popular devices.
I’ve had a play with the RK-002 as well and love the sounds I’m getting, but I run into a problem when I’m trying to record. When I hit play I only end up hearing the trigs on track 9. Any ideas?

But the 3 jams he did in this video.. made me transport somewhere .. and I liked that lol
So.. Digitone.. or Syntakt? 😊
Fantastic! So much effort and love seems to go into these episodes! Truly a marvel at a time when few bother to make anything substantial!
Thank you!!!
Dear Florian,
Thank you for returning our floor model. We couldn't help but notice that the Elektron box now contains one TD-3 and several 2004 issues of Tape Op magazine??
-Klangfarbe
Lol, how did you know?;)
Wow much praise, and this is BEFORE the updated machines it looks
I updated the machine somewhere mid production
@@AudioPilz it’s way better with the update
If the Syntakt sounds a bit too clean, well then Elektron has another machine to offer: The Analog Heat might bring the distortion and glue you are looking for :)
I will never financially recover from this;)
@@AudioPilz freshly announced ruclips.net/video/3Ja8SvxIsIo/видео.html for just 999 credits. wait if you turn that number upsidedown its 👹👹👹😆 I'm afraid I will buy that too. double heat!
Love that you threw in the Boss DR-5 in that shot. I recently repaired mine and have once again fallen in love with it.
Thank you! Is it Bad Gear worthy?
Im going to spend a lot of money the day they release them 😂😭
One that does it all;)
@@AudioPilz yeah! like the Roland Fantom or Korg Chronos? Multi timbral analog with digital?
@@AudioPilz honestly, I want 3... 1 with all the Analog synth/drum capabilities, 1 with all the digital synth/drum capabilities, and finally the sampler to end all samplers... Give thanks to the elektron gods🙌🙏😂
Actually you can already unlock Overbridge, analog voice cards and an IRC client on the Octatrack by inputting a special sequence known only to selected Elektronauts forum users who will reveal it to you for a blood sacrifice.
That first Jam at 6:25 was damn golden sir…
Thank you!!!
It has a lovely, rich and punchy sound, And with the elektron versatility it definitely has a valuable place on the table. Thanks for another great vid!
Agreed!!! Thanks!!!
What is the video of the last piece?
The video that starts at 8:20 is awesome + music makes it a power whammy!
That's some natural cristallization processes under the magnifying glass
crystal clear tech house..nice
😀😀😀
Oh I just noticed you used my Octatrack meme! Thank you! 😆
Always a pleasure! Thanks for that one!
I am disappointed the thumbnail doesn’t say Model:Recycled
Also fun fact: today is the 1 year anniversary of this machine 🥳
Great idea, just changed that!!! Thanks!!!
@@AudioPilz I love you
The Finale Tech House is one of your best jams! So groovy and inspiring..💥💯
Thank you so much!!!
DORIAN ON THE DELOREAN!
Lol
A month into making electronic music and my setup is a Syntakt controlling a Minilogue, Moog Grandmother, and a Roland TB-3. Riding that Bad Gear wave.
This might be one of the world's least hated audio tools lol.
It's still an Elektron after all;)
You're almost 100K subs Audiopilz, kudos in advance, I wonder which gear will you feature on 100k episode.
Maybe Bad Gear?;)
Thanks!
Hey, thank you so much for the support!!!
Every single time it's so pleasurable to watch this nice show. Please continue!
Thank you!!!
I truely believe that an episode on the Yamaha YS-100 will put your channel at a higher level of success !
Great suggestion, thank you!!!
Awesome, this video shows how quickly you can get going on an Elektron machine if you are familiar with the workflow of a previous model. Your "little" tracks kick ass, Audiopilz!
Thank you!!!
I'm so glad I re-bought my long lost SR-16. I've never used it since and probably never will, but I just like having it.
Legend!!!
@7:20 That SR16 sounds so much like NIN Pretty Hate Machine! A classic.
Love it!!!
what does he mean 3 of the analog sounds are identical? also, i want oneof these due to the gnarliness of the distortion and LFOs and SUPER apparent easy linear worlflow... BUT does the cycles do this kind of thing? i want this so bad everytime i hear it
They are structurally identical
@@AudioPilz thank you so much for your reply, but I still don't know what that means! haha.. like... their attack and decays are locked together as the same? so no deep long kick and a short raspy snare? I'm sure I can find what you mean somewhere... I just haven't yet! haha thanks bad gear dude
I just got a Syntakt and own a Digitone Key and Digitakt will this make a solid Trio combo for creating electronic music stuff ....
Nice setup!
Alter! Dein Christa clear tech house ist phenomenal..! Super cool!
Vielen Dank!!!
Thanks for the video! Still trying to understand which new groovebox to pick (as Circuit Tracks is quite limited), and this is one of the options..
Thanks for watching!!! Hard decision, I know...
Omg, I've made it into history! That's my white noise generator at 1:51 😂
If I ever have grandkids, I'll show them this. True legacy.
Nice one! Thank you!!!
The esx-1 meme was amazing. Great show!
Thank you!!!
I was starting to feel uncomfortable about owning a piece of gear that wasn't on this show...thanks for sorting that out 🖤 . I've had it for about half a week now, loving it.
Always a pleasure;)
What’s your favourite thing about Syntakt
@@pierrefitch the clicky the buttons🤤
its a great machine to get you into future-modern-beat territory
Hi There, another great video. I have owned several of the item featured on your show. In some cases they were purchased after seeing them here. Anyway, I saw you covered a plug-in a little while back and an audio tool that I think is worthy of your treatment is ZynAddSubFX. This little synth is one of the most most beautiful sounding things on the planet but is also a completely super complicated time vampire. I revisited the new Zyn-fusion incarnation in the hope of a usable ui, even paid them the £45 for a clear conscious, but still have not managed to successfully install it!
Thank you!!! Great suggestion!!!
Hardware Jam compilation when? these are amazing, every one in each video
Great idea, thanks!!!
5:37 - All three takt-tones: the Syntakt, Digitakt and the Boss DR-5 ;P WELL at least I have ONE of those!
Perfection!!!
Had this terrible intrusive thought about a Synth obsessed couple going through a rough patch; "Babe I'm really needing an Elektron-style workflow to this relationship, and you're giving Volca which is Valid but not my vibe."
Don't Roland me!!!
no significant other would abide this level of dedication to making these videos; you must be single
It's just a matter of communication;)
Hi Florian. Your final track sounds great.
Thank you!!!
I desperately hope that the theoretical "Bad Gear - The Ticked Boxes" album release contains Jam 2, because wow I'm in love (and not just with the snare)
Thank you so much!!! Still not sure if it's going to be a Techno or a Synthwave album;)
The right answer is both
Fantastic show as always last jam was crystals clear
Thank you!
I feel the exact same way
I mean you're kinda just describing a less flexible version of the analog rytm at that point
Any ideas?
Just did this as a proof of concept - I'd have to test this workflow further. I'd like to know too
Good show today, as always. Thanks,
Thanks!!!
