    With the ER-1, pan the kick hard left and all the other drums hard right. Then you have the kick on it's own mono channel and the other drums on their own mono channel. You should put reverb and or delay on the right channel and compression on the kick. Thank me later.

    Gosh I am finding all of my old gear in your videos this morning. I remember when I bought the EA-1 and ER-1 to use with my DJX keyboard at the end of ‘99. While they were limited I had a blast playing them and forever regret selling them, though I used that money to buy an Access Virus A, which has been my favorite.
    I was close to buying a second pair about 15 years ago at a used music shop where I could have gotten them both for $200 but it was Christmas, money was tight and I ended up getting a layaway refund 😭
    I still look around for them from time to time and have almost pulled the trigger on several occasions. Maybe... someday.

    Early digital stuff is so fascinating. It never nails what it's going for, but sometimes it creates it's own extremely unique sound. And when I say "early digital stuff," I really mean like 80's and 90's and early 2000's stuff, as legitimate virtual analogue stuff that was good at copying analogue sounds didn't really come about until the mid 2000's at the earliest. And honestly that makes me really happy because I like different sounds, not just stuff that sounds like something else.
    I always wanted the original Electribes. I used to compare them to the Roland MC boxes and even the SH-32. After all these years I'm still not sure how any of those stack up, as I've never owned them, but I still have a soft spot for all of them, being pieces of gear that I've longed for. I always liked the layout of the Electribes. They seem very intuitive.

    I happened to pick one of these up for under $100 US the other day. God it's awful. Sometimes these old VA's have a charmingly thin and nasal sound, and this one doesn't disappoint on that front. It's like the added they cheap distortion to make it sound even crappier. I still like it though. Crapy is good. Rather fun to fool around with. Def. going to pick up an ER1.

    The ER-1 was my first drum machine and it sounded tinny and flat but with a BBE Sonic Maximizer it could fatten up the kicks and low end. I also had the Electribe ESX-1 SD which had built in effects, sampling and a touch sensitive strip to control drum rolls, pitch etc. During that time period the only other step sequencer drum machine on the market were made by Roland (MC-307) or Yamaha (RMX1.) I also had an SP-505 by Boss and that was very hard to use. I’d love to see a video on that device! It was a lot of numerical editing to get things in the right order.

    • @Lhenndyn
      @Lhenndyn 4 года назад

      AudioPilz it’s the first midi synth from Roland (1983). There is preset yes, but it’s more like a light Jupiter 8, very different from the Juno. It was based on a guitar synth, and they decided to do a keyboard synth finally, 6 voices. It’s actually a good vintage synth, but some people hated it, or underestimated it, because... some sounds are crappy in the preset bank, I gess (best synth to do dying cat’s growl), but some other are great and emblematic (maybe it’s not a English word, sorry I’m French...) of the 80s. Maybe it’s a too good synth for your show... but it’s controversary (yeah... I’m pretty sure this word is not English at all).

It wasn't nearly as bad as when we had to replace an Ensoniq Mirage with a toy-ish Yamaha keytar someone handed us from off-stage mid-song (that red one that is actually pretty cool for lo-fi sounds).

    well to be honest, all the presets on that thing were great to see what it could do... but i wasn't huge on any of that. i never really used the sequencer either..... outside of that, the ea-1 is one of the loudest machines i have owned. for some reason it is damn potent and rugged. i use it only for making quick bass patches that i sample into other things... sometimes i have sequenced it with an mpc or something (you can sequence all the knobs via midi so that is neat) ... i think it really shines as a simple bass synth. they have gone up in price on the used market so i can see how some people might be disappointed these days... but back when i bought that one there were not too many affordable synths. the analog wave 2.0 didn't happen yet.

    TBH I found the latest electribes are worthy of a bad gear entry too. When it was released you couldn't even switch patterns without ALL effect tails just cutting off. That was somewhat fixed but it was still severely limited, and yet managed to require menu diving. Absolutely terrible. ALSO, if you ever do a GoodGear (tm), consider the Deluge. It's... I don't know how Korg is able to sell any electribes. Or that new sequencer box they shoved out. The Deluge is an absolute BEAST.
    Also also, if you wanna borrow mine for an episode let me know :)

    I've been a synth geek for decades. The EA-1 remains one of my favs.... not because of the instant "fun" factor/knob tweaking (though for that as well), but (to your credit, you mentioned, the low price tag), it's ease of use (menu "diving"??? I disagree... it's quite quick to learn/simple), but mainly, it gets some GREAT spacey and crunchy sounds with it's automation recording (while tweaking over top especially). I'd like to know a better analog synth with as many features and interesting sound potentials for the price. Seriously, is there one?

  • @allenpaley

    I found one for dirt cheap on Reverb, and it sat by my desk for weeks. Finally tonight I fired it up and was immediately disappointed. BUT! After patiently wheeling along to A.19, I found a patch that actually sounds GREAT. Imagine the JD-800 "Wailing Guitar" patch, but with about 50% of the nuance and about 90% of the tone. NOT BAD 🤓 Seems like this little box has some potential if one can muster the patience to coax out the magic.
