The bands listed all stand out amongst the crowd. Sabaton, Powerwolf, and HammerFall (as much as I love them) are all generic.

@@obnoxiouslisper1548 For me the most important aspects are the use of power chords and melody, even if it is no fast, or doesn't have symphonic elements, but it still sounds melodic, and it has power chords, it is still power metal.
It is definitely a subgenre of heavy metal, but the melodic aspect of it is what distinguishes it. Basically all those uplifting sounding choruses people can sing along in concerts that have their own vocal melody.
Listen to the band Magic Kingdom for example, songs like "No Mercy For The Enemy", "Sleeping Beauty", "I'm A Lionheart", "Monte Cristo", "In The Name Of Heathen Gods", "Evil Magician", they are all perfect representations of what power metal is, and how it sounds.

Power metal's my most favorite metal subgenre and I love a lot of the bands here. Other bands worth mentioning : Sabaton, Lost Horizon, Stratovarius, HammerFall, Powerwolf, Gloryhammer, Twilight Force.
Other bands still worth checking: Pyramaze, Iron Fire, Iron Savior, Firewind, Edguy, Brothers of Metal, Kamelot, Bloodbound, Avantasia, Freedom Call, Tarot, Primal Fear, Dragony, Manticora.
Sabaton got me started with power metal. It's my favorite genre too!

@Ben I think that's down to the fact that Blind Guardian's sound didn't really get found until 1990, and that Helloween were already on the radar as early as '85.

Sabaton is not heavy metal, seriously, I listen to them a ton and they have all the bells & whistles associated with power metal. They have some heavy/gritty songs, yes, but most of them are super fast with epic melodies & harmony & the like, imo one of the most easily-defined power metal bands in existence..

These lists generally intrigue me because I know everyone seems to have a slightly different take on metal. For instance, we were up to number 3 and I started getting nervous if Blind Guardian was going to be mentioned or not, then they appeared. A true sigh of relief, and I'm very glad they were included on this list!
Nightwish isn't power metal. And Symphony X is progressive metal. Plus no "top 10 power metal band" list is complete without Hammerfall, Stratovarius, or Kamelot. Loudwire, get your shit together.

Well, Nightwish does have several songs that qualify as power metal, just with a soprano singing instead of your typical high pitched male vocals, especially from the old days, but yes, the ones you mentioned are full on power metal and they're also great, so it makes more sense for those to make the cut.

Savatage deserves to be on this list. "Sirens" and "The Dungeons Are Calling" are pioneering albums for the American style of power metal. With "Gutter Ballet" and forwards (where they took a more prog metal approach), they are one of the first metal bands to make extensive use of piano/keyboards, thus paving the way for many, if not all, of the modern "theatrical" metal bands (such as Avantasia, Kamelot, Symphony X, and so on).
