Hi John, I grew up and live in Spain. Just adding a few comments that might clarify a few things. 1) I am fairly certain they mean a motorcycle helmet. It is actually not that weird to see young men walk around in their helmets if they do something quickly off their bikes. I've had delivery drivers not take off their helmets quite a few times, so I can see how it wouldn't necessarily raise suspicion, even less so in a big city like Madrid. 2) About the landlord checking the apartment, that is highly illegal in Spain. Landlords are not even supposed to have keys to the apartments (although they all do) - but going inside a rented apartment without very clear permission from a renter is essentially a criminal offence. So I understand that given these circumstances the landlord will not break that rule. 3) I don't watch TV much, however, I have heard about this case from several others, so it seems to be in the media quite a bit. 4) I read another comment that seems to think that she might be viewed as a "sudaca" (a highly racist term) here, but I can tell you I really doubt it. While this racial discrimination does exist, it is usually directed at people who are deemed lower class, with little education, in way more precarious situations, and darker skin. I think Ana would absolutely not face that kind of discrimination from people or the police. She's the kind of person who would fit right in in a city like Madrid. I bet she made a bunch of friends in the time she stayed there. I really hope she is found safe and sound. Thank you for everything you do.

Associated Press is writing that it is a motorcycle helmet.

    • @hg278
      @hg278 7 месяцев назад +10

I had the same thought about the helmet. I feel like seeing motorcycle helmets on young men in major European cities is pretty common! Not the case in the US, so I think that's why there is some confusion.

Thank you for sharing this info. I know because of the congestion in Madrid motorcycles are common. I think if the guy somehow forced her to walk with him, it would not draw attention. It's sad people can be so cruel although I would have expected her US citizenship to be more of a problem. I am glad the media there is covering her disappearance. The husband is obviously suspicious. Maybe he hired a hitman. I hope the US is able to pressure law enforcement there to get a search warrant to enter her apartment. I have a feeling she is there.

@sandilou2U My understanding is the apartment was checked, in terms of making sure she isn't in it and there were no immediately visible signs of a crime, they just can't get the warrant to do a full detailed search like in drawers, through her paperwork etc

By the end of this video, I am extremely suspicious that this is a hired hit paid for by the ex-husband, or even that he did it himself. Sounds like money and a protracted divorce are two very strong motives. If I were the family and I had the means, I would hire an international private investigator. The first thing I would do is investigate the ex-husband's travel.Could he have traveled from Serbia to Spain and back again? My prayers go out to Ana and her family and friends, and I pray that I am wrong, but sadly, after watching so many of these, we have learned to look at the spouse first.

Yeah, I'm also suspicious at the mention of therapy. Assuming that was not her, how would they know she had therapy even? Even if you're stalking someone, it would be kind of hard to know for sure. It's just a strange thing to mention. She wouldn't have been honest with them if she'd been captured, and the family would have pointed it out if she were not in therapy. Her ex husband, however, that would be something he might be preoccupied enough about to mention to someone hired to take her. The only other way I would think that would be mentioned is if they searched her phone for things she commonly spoke about doing.

Okay, some extra information from Spanish media:
-She went missing from the Salamanca neighbourhood, one of the wealthiest of the city.
    - she spoke with a friend on Thursday about an apartment she was looking into. She texted the same friend on Friday the 2nd at 11:30 saying she had not liked it.
    - That same night, around 22:00, she texted a different friend that she was in her apartment and was ok.
    - By noon on Saturday 3rd she had not answered any text or calls which was very unusual. Her friends started contacting people from her social circle asking about her.
-They found out a friend who lives in Sweden had received the english version of the text around 13:00 on Saturday. Another friend in Spain (not sure which one) got the spanish version of the text some time after noon. It’s unclear when, some sources say there was a two hour difference. Both messages stated that “we are leaving now”.
    - One of the friends went to her apartment and received no answer. She slipped a note under the door asking Ana to contact her as soon as possible.
    - She went on to ask the neighbours. They hadn’t seen or heard from Ana but thought they had seen light in her apartment around 1 am. They had not heard any commotion or screams of any kind.
-They also mentioned that the previous night someone had attempted to rob the building because the cameras in the intercom and next to the elevator had been spray painted around midnight but nothing seemed to have been stolen.
    - This alarmed the friend who called emergency services. Police and the fire department showed up and the firefighters entered the apartment through the window. They found no signs of an altercation.
    - on monday that same friend went to the train station at 11:00 to see if Ana would show up to catch the train for their day trip to Barcelona. When she didn’t show, she contacted the family.
    - Police is reviewing footage from cameras from all around the neighbourhood and have obtained an order to track her phone.
As a side note, police in spain are a lot less forthcoming with information than they seem to be in the USA, which might be why there seems to be little information.
Also, SOS desaparecidos (SOS missing persons) is a Spanish organisation that compiles profiles of missing people and you can report tips or sightings to them. Ana has a profile there and a missing person poster that you can download and post on social media.

According to the friend, she was last seen by neighbors outside of her apartment on Feb 2 at 22:00. That would be around the time she sent the text about staying in for the night. The helmeted man was seen in the building about half an hour earlier. I was wondering if she ever made it to the apartment that evening. Speculating that her husband is involved, it would be plausible that he wrote the texts since he is not Spanish speaking and would have used google translate, a stalker in Madrid would speak Spanish no? and if the husband did flee to Serbia, there is no extradition in Serbia, it would be a safe haven for him. John, in all my years as a broken person searching for something meaningful in all the wrong places, whilst in active addiction, I never would've met a strange man in a park, and allowed him to take me away to his *home/cottage, especially when I know cell reception is spotty there* . There are days when I think about where I went, with whom, whilst blackout drunk, and wonder how I didn't wind up in a ditch, and I can still say with certainty, I would have never willingly put myself in that specific situation. Now this woman wasn't in active addiction, wasn't in self destruct mode, she was a healthy, intelligent, business minded, hard working woman who was embarking on a new life that very much sounded like she was looking forward to. I do not believe those texts are from her.

Dual US-Spain citizen here. Just as in the US, the police here in Madrid focus mainly on the investigation, not on keeping the public informed. This may include withholding info from family members - just as can happen in the US. There have been cases here where the police knew who the perpetrator was for weeks or even months, but nothing was said or leaked as they built their case - they don’t want to tip their hand. In terms of how serious this is being taken, from the local press it appears that it is being taken very, very seriously. Not much can be concluded from the fact that it is called a “missing person” case. These labels define what powers the investigators have - they will escalate the classification of the case when and if they feel they need additional powers of investigation. They will release the photo of the person with the motorcycle helmet if they believe that the public might have relevant info. There may be many reasons to withhold it - they don’t believe it’s linked to the case, there is something in the photo that they don’t want the perpetrator to know that they know, etc. Again, there are many cases where security footage was never released until they had the perpetrator in custody.

Spanish police "is not like the US doesn't have the capability yada yada " because they're not doing podcasts about one missing tourist 2 weeks ago, in a gigantic city, when the apparent culprits know what they're doing, when they had local women disappearing in a small village for DECADES and it turns out the guy lived walking distance away from the bodies. I think based on what our Spanish friends have said in these comments, there's likely some requirements or procedures LE in Spain have to follow that are unfamiliar to us in the US, which causes some confusion. It sounds like more is likely happening behind the scenes than we can find out or they are willing to tell even the family. Hopefully the state department can help facilitate better communication with the family and LE. I'm sure theres a ton of coordination that is complicated between the US, Serbia, and Spain. I imagine it is happening but this coverage may encourage it to happen faster.

I understand your frustration about the lack of details for this case and certainly at least the Madrid area could have been named on articles. However, as a European I think I may have a better understanding on this matter.
I don't speak for the whole of Europe but I do know how things work at least in the UK and Italy. LE tend to keep their cards very close to their chest, they release the minimum of details possible and investigations are indeed very private. Unless you have specific and trustworthy tv programs dedicated to missing people and murder cases, done in collaboration with the police and where help from the public is explicitly sought (and they do exist: Chi l'ha Visto on RAI television in Italy and Crimewatch on the BBC in the UK), general publications and media either have very few details or it's common policy to release the bare minimum.
I don't know which method is more fruitful l: sometimes public knowledge is the turning point in a case, other times it damages the investigation. But I get the frustration of the family and friends, as well as that of those RUclipsrs who try to help.

I’m from Czechia and I can confirm this. Our police almost never releases detailed information to the public and when they do, it’s months later after they run into a dead end. Same with the media, they publish only the most basic information, sometimes not even the gender of victims. Things are done differently in Europe to protect people’s privacy.

There is a huge difference between Colombian Spanish and "Google translate" Spanish, so I believe her brother when he says it wasn't her who wrote it. Sadly, as someone who lives in South America and has dozens of friends who have moved to Spain, I know that there is a lot discrimination against South Americans there and the police might not be interested in fully investigating her disappearance due to that (or even care at all). To them, she's just another "sudaca," that's it.

Absolutely - the difference in dialects between Spanish speaking countries is massive! My sister has dual Canadian/Mexican citizenship, and my BFF is Puerto Rican, and comparing their Spanish is always hilarious, because even in that short distance, the language has evolved so much that some standard Mexican sayings are downright filthy in Puerto Rican Spanish, and vice versa! One thing that they can both agree on though, is that standard "Spain" Spanish is weird, and makes no sense to them as people with roots in Latin America. I have no comment, since I only speak DuoLingo "tourist" Spanish. I guess I need to spend more time at my sister's place in Nayarit!

How much more obvious does her soon-to-be ex husband wants to make it to look like he did it (or paid someone to do it on his behalf). C'mon! A few days before she is kidnapped, he reports his motorcycle gear is suddenly stolen...I bet you anything that's even his motorcycle helmet seen on camera...didn't even bother to buy a new one. He's seen in the general area of Spain and n-o-t at his house, his normal place of residence, where mail & Amazon boxes are stacked up? And he suddenly leaves the area, supposedly, right after the kidnapping (or he'll claim 'just before'). Someone with his same helmet (I am assuming it's the ex's), half hour before the kidnapping, late at night at 9:30 pm, spray paints all over the cameras in the elevator and common areas that she will be walking thru, and then she is "missing" at 10:00 pm. The text messages from her phone are obviously not hers. With the following info, IMHO, I think the ex did it. I don't even think she was lured downstairs and into the night by a phone call that she had a package or someone needing her to come outside to him. Why spray paint cameras in the building if you're just going to lure her out...whoever did it was going to be O-N those cameras otherwise and that's why he painted them. I think he took off the motorcycle stuff, had regular clothes underneath, had a gun or knife, went up to her door, and walked her (close enough to her or had the weapon in a pocket) out of that building to a close-by or waiting car. If you were the ex, and you paid someone to kidnap her (which where would you get a guy willing to do that in a foreign country no less, he might talk, and also it could be a setup with an uncover police officer)...wouldn't you be 1/2 way across the world from where the kidnapping was happening with all sorts of people around (eye witnesses) and make sure you were on camera, to solidify your alibi??? Maybe make sure you were at home? Wouldn't the anonymous person who was paid to kidnap her use his own disguise and not the ex's? No need for it to be "stolen" then. This seems sloppily done, maybe even last minute to me. Mail/delivery boxes left at his house. His motorcycle stuff stolen just days before so he didn't have to buy a disguise. And the ex was in the general area "just before" she gets kidnapped and suddenly leaves the area? C'mon. At the very least, IMHO, the ex kidnapped her, and may have handed her off to someone else, if there was someone he paid...and I don't even think t-h-a-t happened...I think the ex did it all himself. I bet you anything, when police get ahold of his (the ex's) and/or her phones, it would show where he went with her and they'll find her. Sadly, we're seen this scenario many times before in divorce situations. Poor lady. R.I.P.

If this was a Stalker, how would they know which people to contact on her phone & exactly what to say? English to the friend, Spanish to her Brother, that seems to him to have been entered into Google translate so doesn't sound like Ana with her Columbian throwback, to actually be writing it? Possibly the estranged Husband hired somebody then? Or maybe at the viewing of the apartment(s), there could have been another person viewing who overheard her telling the EA where she currently lived? Or, as is common, she filled in details at the viewing for the Agency to capture incase she lost that apartment & they would be able to find her something similar, & that same "other property viewer" saw those details? She's definitely in danger & didn't disappear of her own free will. I think a PI needs to be hired being a foreign Country as laws are so different. Madrid has been my home for the past 30 years since I quit the U.S. I will only say one thing: my money is on the husband. I do not think she will be found alive unfortunately. Whoever took her either convinced her with a lie to go with him or her or she is somewhere on the property where she lived. Spanish police are astute and they will get to the bottom of this.

I actually think she's depressed and pretending that she's happy. She sounds Lost first of all she's from Columbia then she was illegally living in the United States and now she was probably illegally living in Spain. It sounds to me like she thinks she could just go do whatever she wants and live wherever she wants but now it has caught up with her, and some evil person has gotten a hold of her probably another illegal since Spain has hundreds of thousands of them. In recent years there are many dead women turning up all over Spain. She is not the first to disappear there are thousands of women missing
