One of my great grandmother's favorite phrase when we were misbehaving was "vas a cagar pelos sin comer mango!" Literally it translates to "you're going to shit hairs with having eaten mangoes." Basically, it means you'll be in serious trouble. I guess it comes from the fact that mangoes are fuzzy and presumably you poop the fibers out, but you if you don't stop misbehaving you'll be in so much trouble you won't even have to eat the mango to poop the hairs. It strikes me a lot of Cuban phrases derive from bowel movements! Also, the full version of "me cago en diez!" is "me cago en dios cabron!" Another PC version is "me cazo en diez!"
Great video! I'm an Argentinian teacher of English. I've never been to the USA but I came across one of your videos and fell in love with the Latino characters, with whom I feel so identified, and the Spanglish. I love linguistics. So funny and interesting to notice the patterns of Spanish-English mix. BTW, tremendo paquete would also be understood as male junk in my country. Bendiciones!

I'm not Latina at all, but I am learning Spanish and all of these videos give me a great sense of pride in learning about all of these beautiful cultures and this amazing language, despite not having a family background in it.
Living on the hyphen is a concept found in a lot of latino/latina literature. Studied it through many different writers and for a couple of semesters in grad school. :)
Brought me back to my Abuela's living room when the whole family came over. Also known as every day of the week. I'm from Peru but was adopted into a Cuban family.
de pinga! or if you don't want to be so vulgar then "del carajo". The first version is one I say often. If something is unbelievably bad then you can say "Eso esta de pinga!"
I LOVE THIS!!! "Temendo paquete" en PR is a "Big lie" I never understood why people say, "Me cago en diez!" (I've said it a lot) Now I get where it comes from! Thanks! En PR, se dice, "Arroz con culo"
Cuban-American poet Gustavo Perez Firmat wrote a book called "living on the hyphen." "Tremendo paquete" means either a big lie (me conto tremendo paquete) or something really annoying (ay caro wants me to join her club, me metio en tremendo paquete)
Hey Jenny! Great video! Oye, I heard you say your friend came up with "Living on the Hyphen". That's actually a book by Gustavo Perez Firmat, so that's probably where he/she got it from. Clever indeed.
Mateo era un vecino de abuelita y abuelo desde Publix y Winn-Dixie. Sadly, she is long dead, and I still try to relive the memory of her beautiful accent and wonderful smile. Her aching back and complaining about the weird strangers walking from Winn-Dixie. She was always careful to tell my abuelo to stay put and hold my hand while I jogged with him down the sidewalk and jammed down in the Saturn car from the small shed with the ruined tarp. The windows had those awful metal bars to keep intruders out and always kept the windows closed and blinds closed to block out the sun. Those beautiful trees my grandparents had. How sick they were, and I cried so hard. I lost my mom's mom when I was 8 years old, so I really don't know what happened to her. The dog is so old and becoming blind to remember them. She is so depressed when they left her and knew of their souls along with their spirits passing on. I'm still mourning and grieving. It's like I'm clouded by 3-4 generations of spirits and ended up with a demon along with possibly two other demons. I feel really weird and weak. Soulless and completely dead. Like I don't exist.
Like the word Bistec in Cuba , moms and abuelitas used to say ‘’I’m gonna cook some Bistec for dinner ‘’ ( if you’re a real Cuban you know what I’m talking about) I just realized that Bistec means Beef Stake 😂😂😂
In a way Cuba reminds me of Ecuador only because , in South America Colombia Venezuela and Ecuador were part of a nation , until they became independent anyway , around a time , Ecuador helped Cuba , I believe they kind of opened doors for them , and apparently some Cubans stayed in Ecuador!! In Guayaquil we use a lot of their words , jama, oye, uItima/o Coca Cola del desierto, socio , chor, believe there’s more but in a way , I Kind can say I respect Cubans a lot more then any other country in the Caribbean only because there very strict people , Puerto Rican’s and Dominicans are more like gente chevere relajado which isn’t a problem , but a person like me , el tipo serio , es la movida !!!

I can’t imagine this accent being used In a professional or intellectual conversation. Soo Tacky. And please don’t bring Mexicans into this. There’s is absolutely no comparison.
Blue jeans? We don't say that in Cuba...we call them "pitusa". Also, "paquete" is not "drama", it is something like."a huge lie", something too difficult to believe. Actually, "paquetero" is a person who tells lies constantly. Also, "mami" does not necessarily mean "hot woman". It will depend on the intonation and context. Just think that women also use it, referring to other women. It's just an endearing term most of the time.
