      For sure, I would do that, or maybe a big latching contactor with an on/off switch in the cab. (latching only uses power to switch). Not sure how easy it will be to find though. Big DC loads require a very beefy switch.

  • @vintageshed965

    Hey Gingium, you need a good socket set. I've spent many hours choosing the one that doesn't skip any sizes and ended up buying these two sets. DeWalt dwmt72164 for 1/4 and 3/8 inch Drives; TEKTON 13203 1/2 inch Drive Socket Set, 84-Piece.
    These sets don't skip any sizes, will cover all your mechanical needs from 4mm to 32mm range. You will have an organized tool set and will never have a problem to find that rare socket again ;). Hopefully if you make a review of them, it will cover the purchase cost. Hope it will help you. Good luck.

    If the battery is in the back of the bus then probably the battery grounds to the frame in the rear and then those wires connect ground to the engine in the front. while the positive lead has a dedicated wire to the front. You may want to check for corrosion where the battery negative grounds to the frame, etc.

    ADD MORE GROUNDS. Grind some new shiny spots on the frame and the body and add a couple more ground cables. REplace all your battery cables and your main starter cables too. Also ground the block to the chassis directly, and you wont have any burnt up grounds anymore.

  • @roadwolf2268
    @roadwolf2268 5 лет назад

    The smaller wires would have more resistance, hence get hot and melt. A great rule of thumb for any car is what car audio people call upgrading the big three, upgrade the size of wires (positive and negative) from battery to starter, alternator to wherever it goes, and all the grounds. I usually replace them with 4 gauge or 2 gauge (smaller number means thicker wire) as most (not all) manufacturers use 8 gauge or smaller, I also suggest making sure the ground wires or the biggest if you have to choose in size. Also if you have any worries about if a ground wires is good enough, you can always add more, having a ground from engine/starter to frame, frame to body, body to engine/starter seems stupid but it's better to have a backup if one becomes damaged or corroded. A suggestion for anyone who is going to work on something big like the bus would be to go with 0/1 gauge power and ground wires with 2 gauge alternator wires or all 0/1 gauge wires and I would also put another ground wire from frame to body in the back to help with tail light grounds and any other body grounds near the back.
    Just my 2 cents worth, upgrading the big three has a few videos here on RUclips explaning why it's a good idea

    I knew it, that´s why it took long time to start it before because the starter motor was dying.
    My second car the Volvo 740 estate had starting problems just like what your bus did before, like it needed to run starter motor for long time. Then I visited the main dealer and they swapped the fuel pump or starter motor relay, and the problem was fixed. And the guy at the main dealer said that the relay was so sooty that it was a miracle that it even worked.

    I'm a bit late to the party but the reason why that wire bew up just because the batteries are mounted and grounded straight to the Frame(meaning there is no ground wire going from the batteries to the engine bay directly, rather the frame is used as a central grounding point witch the batteries are connected to), is the responsibility of those wires(in the eng bay you showed) to ground to engine block to the frame and thus the batteries. Since starter is bolted to the eng block and thus grounded through the engine block, all of the current to the starter from the batteries runs through those wires. The reason why the gauges and electronics started to go crazy with was because those wires were melting and making an intermittent connection to the body and was switching on and off the electronics and starter rapidly(up and down starter noise). Be sure to double-check and make sure that's the positive wire going to the starter is not burnt up as well, as that wire is constantly powered when the batteries are connected.

    I had this happen once, I left the negative cables loose luckily and saved it. Give that a try. Oh and also, 1/2" = 13mm, 3/8" = 10mm, 7/16" = 11mm. No they aren't perfect, but when your starter solenoid is stuck do whatever is needed, a new cable end isn't much compared to a new vehicle.

    When I had my starter rebuilt the new rebuild locked up on me the same way... multiple times. I had fast access to the terminals so I was able to disconnect it before it went entirely bad, but the starter/alternator guy that had rebuilt mine said that I could usually undo the damage just by knocking on the starter relay, which worked! He told me this usually happens when there is a bad connection or low charge and the starter isn't getting enough juice, and for some reason that causes the solenoid to weld itself together and cause the starter motor to run continuously, just like yours did. So my suggestion would be to replace the starter ground and power as well as the battery terminals. But I'm no Master Tech :/

    I'd expect nothing less from a krusty ole ferd, at least they offer a good cooking surface.
