REMOVAL OF FREE ARM SLAB: I couldn't get Kevin to help me with my problem, other than to point me to the service manual that's incorrect. Fortunately, the technician at the Singer Distribution Center in Chicago helped me. To remove the free arm slab from the machine, section 2-5, figure 5 says to remove screw "K", but points to where there is no screw! In that same diagram, screw "K" is actually the screw that is all the way to the left, in the center. After you remove the screw, you have to free a plastic clip on either side of the plastic cover that holds the free arm slab to the aluminum frame. They are on the right side of the slab - one in the front and one in the back. Just spread the bottom of the cover a bit on each side to free the clip. That's what figure 6 is trying to tell you, but that's a lousy illustration also. I can't see a way to upload an image here, or it would be obvious. I hope my explanation is not too confusing.
That is because I was on the road for an extended time when I answered you. I did create a video to address this though. Sorry I wasn't able to help you sooner.

Thanks a lot! You saved me hours of troubleshooting. By the way, the tension knob (at the right of the spring) is reachable from the left with the tip of a screwdriver. I've been able to tighten it by only removing the left cover. If you raise the presser foot it's easy to turn.

My side wheel of my machine is stiff iv taken out the bobbin put cleaned it and still is stiff iv been looking to find a video , my manual isn’t like the one in this video , and please please help
Kevin, thank you so much for the bobbin timing tutorial and the service manual. I now need to look at fixing my tension, but can't seem to get the arm top cover, successfully followed 2-1 - 2-5, removed the screws L & M, but the arm top cover is not coming off. Any chance of a video showing the process of removing all the covers (how you got to the starting point above)?
There is a screw hidden back behind the bobbin area. Get a flashlight and shine it into that area and you'll see it. I will see if I can do a video on this since others are having trouble finding it, but it will be a couple of more days before I can get to it.
Your videos have saved me so many times. Have you ever experienced upper tension being too loose? I thought maybe my lower tension was too tight (it wasn't that). I can only get a good tension balance I'd I set my upper tension to 9! Otherwise, the lower thread will not pull through the top of the fabric. I thought maybe there was lint stuck between the upper tension control disks, but no luck there. Have you experienced this? I am so frustrated
I have a video on adjusting the bobbin tension too. Between that and this video, which shows how to increase the needle tension you should be able to balance it. It you still can’t then buy a new bobbin… sometimes they can go bad.
Hi Kevin, I watch your video and downloaded the manual. I tried to take my Singer Heavy Duty 4452 apart so I can tighten the tension. I have my tension set on the highest setting on my machine and still getting loops on the underside of my fabric. Anyway I could get the bottom parts of my machine off and the knobs in the front off but couldn't get the top and the front or back sides off. Is there a trick to taking them off? It seems like everything is interlocked together. Can you please help me out with that. It would be nice if you could do a video on how to take the machine apart to help us out with how to get the sides and top off. Thank you for the manual. If will really help if I can get this crazy machine apart.
@@kevinsews Can I add a "Me To"? My sticking point was the arm top cover, successfully followed 2-1 - 2-5, removed the screws L & M, but the arm top cover is not coming off. Thank you so much for the timing video and the link to the manual.
Thank you very much for videos like this. I sew everyday and I love this machine for sewing fleece.m. It began knocking and I could not find any answers anywhere. I was able to see the gear on the bottom of my machine. It was not clean looking like yours and I was afraid of removing what was there. I’ll be ordering the items you’ve listed and cleaning my machine. I found my thread coming off of the spool was too loose from the time I received it. Manipulating my tension dial didn’t help so I solved it with putting a netted sleeve on the spool of thread. Now I’ll be able to tight the tension. I’ve been able to fix most things but was too nervous to do this. Your explanations are clear and concise. I’m doing this. Thanks again
Kevin Sews I have one more question. Should the gears look as clean as yours do? I looked at mine and they were black and appeared to be caked in the ridges. I work with fleece so I’m sure there are fibres mixed in. I wanted to know if I clean it until the ridges are like yours. Thanks
Question if you don't mind: singer heavy duty 4423 Tension not trapping evenly touching at the back but not rthe front, whether the spring is out or well in.
First, check your thread tension. I have a video showing how to get the thread tension as a starting point on my channel. If this isn't the problem capture a video with your cell phone and post it on your channel showing the details of the issue. That can be really helpful.
@@kevinsews Thank you for the reply, I found out what the problem was. It was the arm that pulls the tensioner apart when you lift the foot arm up. With the foot arm down, the tensioner was going too on an angle and it was the arm still holding the tensiner off (not closing too evenly and trapping the cotton no matter where I put the tension wheel 0 - 9 didn't make any difference. I bent the arm a little and it's done the trick.
Hi Kevin, My needle is positioned too far to the left. The left right center works but with reference to the incorrect starting position. I found a video showing needle bar adjustment on an older model but the guts look different. Can you please give me some direction? Thanks!
@@kevinsews For some reason you video started about 5 min into it ( I probably started watching previously) so I initially missed your reference to the service manual you posted. Mine is a 4432 but it was close enough to the manual posted that I was able to get it adjusted! Thank you so much for these videos! I opened everything up and oiled and cleared the lint yesterday and it’s sewing like a dream!
My manual does not show how to take covers off for Singer 6423. I have removed the one on end but it is still attached on top and We cannot find another screw that would release it
Hello Kevin. I managed to download the file from my computer. Thank you so much! would it be possible for you to do a tutorial on repairing the tension unit of the heavy 4423 please? a screw has jumped and the wheel of the tension unit spins in a vacuum. I don't know how to fix this. Thank you in advance for your help.@@kevinsews
@@kevinsews Thank you so much for this video, especially for sharing the service manual! Thanks to the service manual I was able to disassemble my 44S and fix the issue it had. I bought it used and when I got home and threaded a bobbin, the motor no longer engaged just like Kuanghuei's machine. In my case, I found the sliding gear inside the handwheel wasn't re-engaging after I moved the bobbin threader to "normal sewing mode". I removed the pin from the "axle" behind that handwheel (I fashioned a press and pressed it out), slid the handwheel off, and cleaned the internal gear slide. I happen to have some Tri-flow on hand and I applied that and it runs beautifully now! Well, it's a little squeeky (very dull squeek) and it has some resistance on the handwheel. I'll have to figure out if that's normal or not. I think it's coming from the "drivetrain" closer to the needle, like under the "needle platform"... but it was doing that before I disassembled it... I'm so tired it's 3am I had to finish fixing it before going to bed. Forgive me, I'm brand new to sewing machines and I don't know the terminology for the parts. Anyway thanks again and take care!
@@legocircus The drive part of the machine that connects to the handwheel and to the drive shaft might be a bit out of time. Take another look at the service manual and see if they cover this. It can also be the bobbin gear getting into a bind. I've seen this from time to time.
I can do a quick cell phone video showing you exactly what mine is doing when I change the stitch from a straight stitch to a zigzag. You can then compare it to what yours is doing.
I have singer merrit heavy duty 2112 seeing machine .I want to remove tension assembly .Dont know how to remove it .It looks similar to yours at the top left of machine .I have stich dual on front .Any idea how to remove it .
They don't show how to do it in the Service Manual I've got. If I had to I could do it though. If your machine is already broken then what can trying hurt by trying is my attitude. That is the way you learn things. Either way it needs to be fixed to be useful.
Kevin Sews My machine is not broken .Its stich is not proper sometime loose so I wanted to open the tension disk .But i dont know how to open it .I am trying to open the front cover but couldnt .There is a stich width dial in the front which I am not been able to remove .I tried .Do you know hiw to remove knob .Is there any mechanism .Any help will be appreciated .
Dude save your time on the manual, it's total crap, what he provides here is literally one million times more helpful than the crap black-and-white manual, just my two cents
Hi Kevin, love the video. My singer heavy duty has froze up and can't turn needle with hand control. Can you tell how to fix? Or why it froze? Thank you so much..
It is due to it being way out of time. This is a bit beyond simply setting the bobbin timing when it is a bit off. The one thing you can check though it to make sure there aren't any loose screws inside. I've seen this cause the problem before.
After cleaning and greasing my machine (much thanks to you!) the machine is running so much smoother. Before I did it there was a knocking noise. After I did it the knock was almost gone. The sound is coordinated with the up and down motion of the needle shaft. It’s very low but is still there. Is there something I can check? Barb
On the top side of the needle bar that is a stop. Check to see it is raised slightly above the needle bars' lowest point when the needle is in the down position. Sometimes it hits when the needle is reaches the lowest point. Simply loosen the screw and raise is up so it doesn't hit. If this isn't the issue then your needle may need to be moved a very slight distance away from the hook. Sometimes it slips forward and starts hitting the hook. If you need I can do a quick cell phone video for you showing you exactly what I am talking about, but it will be late this evening before I can do it.
Thanks very much Kevin. I was out of cell phone range so I’ve just read your reply. I’d really appreciate a video. I’ll check tomorrow to see if I can do as you suggest. Hello from Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada.
Hello Kevin :) I have just bought a used 4432, have fully serviced and adjusted everything (this is not my first rodeo but your videos have been helpful anyway) and it is sewing perfectly apart from the top thread showing on the underside of the fabric. This happens to some degree regardless of any stitch settings and the top thread still shows slightly even with the tension turned all the way up to 9. Without buying a thread tension gauge is there some way that you can suggest for me to decide whether I should adjust the bobbin tension or recalibrate the top thread tension dial? TIA
@@kevinsews Wow! Thanks so much for the quick reply :) No, it's a basic medium weight cotton that I was using to test the machine. It makes almost no difference whether there are 2, 4 or 8 layers with thicker giving a slightly better, but still unacceptable result. I'm using a new universal 80/12 needle and regular polyester thread
@@kevinsews Yes I have, my problem is how to figure out whether it's the bobbin tension that needs adjusting or the top thread tension dial that needs calibrating. I don't really want to buy a tension gauge just for this, I've never needed one before and I can't see myself getting much use for one in the future
Hi Kevin. I want to try to add an accessory to my 4452. To do that, I need to remove the stainless steel base plate. Do I need to remove the free arm slab to do that? If I do, section 2-5 says to "remove the screw (k). (5)." However, "k" points to a place that doesn't have any screws! What exactly do I need to remove to take off the free arm slab, and if that won't get the stainless steel base plate off, what will? Thanks.
@@ambrosiaarts I did not find it. I'm going to go to the nearest Singer service center and get them to show me, even if they want to charge me. I really just need to remove the stainless steel base plate. Maybe I don't even need to do the steps I'm doing, but I don't know. Hopefully, I'll find out more tomorrow. I guess Kevin's one reply is all I get.
Try as might, I cannot get the top cover to come off--I've removed the two screws under the the handle, but it will not move. I've tried prying it loose with knife blades and a screwdriver--no movement at all--it acts like it's glued in place--. Definitely the same SInger 4423 as in your video. Purchased in 2020. What's the solution?
@@kevinsews Confused by this answer. Only one screw to remove on the back cover and it would not come off or move at all. Also the PDF service manual for this sewing machine seems to say that you have to remove the top plate before the back cover will come off. What am I missing here? Thanks for your attention--really appreciate it.
It's a shame, once you had all the covers off, you didn't give us a 'tour' around the inside of the machine from all angles, for the sake of curiosity, to show what's going on inside.
Hello! Sr. I know you heard this question a lot but don't know what to do I would like to know what machine it's better for us (beginners) like me ,my concern is all about of what kind a sewing machine I have to buy because I'm trying to do some hems on jeans obviously and I curious trying to do a little proyect that includes tick fabric (pouch ) maybe could be the singer heavy dury or brother st371hd and and I'm thinking on pq1500sl help me please !! I hope you you can answer thanks for you videos ...
Brother PQ1500 series is a great machine. It is very powerful and it has been great to work on Jeans, Canvas, Maine Grade Fabrics and Upholstery. It is the machine I take on the road too. Between the Singer Heavy Duty and Brother ST-371hd (I own them both) the Singer has more power in my testing. Now if you really want power in the under $400 price range I would look at the Toyota machines. Check out the video I created using it a few years ago: ruclips.net/video/84y80YKTVnA/видео.html
@@gabrieluribe7410 Get the 4432, and then watch Kevin's 55 minute explainer video on the 4432 once or twice, all the way through, while sitting next to your new machine, and if you do that, then you will have substantial mastery of the machine by the end of his videos. My 4432 has been sewing 4 ply webbing daily for 5 years, and at a beginner price point it can't be beat.

Okay, I just uploaded a quick cell phone video to address your question. Take a look and see if it is helpful.

My 328 singer is not catching the thread on the bottom when there is material, if no material it does catch, timing us good tension is good
The needle depth when it goes down might be slightly off.
Try using a Ball point needle. # 14. Singer

You're welcome. I am working on the video that shows how to set the timing next.
Kevin Sews I have one more question. Should the gears look as clean as yours do? I looked at mine and they were black and appeared to be caked in the ridges. I work with fleece so I’m sure there are fibres mixed in. I wanted to know if I clean it until the ridges are like yours. Thanks
Barb Cnockaert Clean them and grease them. The grease is clear, so you will see a big difference.

The handwheel is engaged with the needle, but not with the motor (Motor is running, but the needle is not moving.)What should I do?
Remove the cover to ensure the belt hasn't come off would be my first suggestion.

@@kevinsews can we time it ourselves or do we need a professional?

TIA
Is your fabric the kind that no mater what you set the tension too it still shows on the bottom only?
@@kevinsews Wow! Thanks so much for the quick reply :) No, it's a basic medium weight cotton that I was using to test the machine. It makes almost no difference whether there are 2, 4 or 8 layers with thicker giving a slightly better, but still unacceptable result. I'm using a new universal 80/12 needle and regular polyester thread
@@denziljoe Have you viewed this video? ruclips.net/video/7lyxWXCh2dQ/видео.html
