    Thanks for mentioning all the spots that need oil. I have always oiled the metal to metal in the past, but, the recent video I saw said to oil the felt and did not mention the grease or other parts to oil. You have made my day. Now I have to take it apart and oil the rest, and grease it when I receive the grease. Your video has made me happy now that I do not have to spend $$$$$ on having it serviced. May God bless you for taking your time to bless others.

    This video was a lifesaver!!!!!! singer HD 4432 user here. I run an Etsy shop sewing goods and due to what I just learned is a timing issue, I thought I was going to have to go out and buy a new machine, on top of notifying a customer their order would be delayed 😢. Hi Kevin, I was using the button attachment yesterday and bobbin seemed to jam, no nesting but the bobbin is making a ratting noise and jumping around the casement. Do you think this is a timing issue as I've rethreaded the machine, changed the needle and dropped the dog feed just to see if it's any of those. Still no joy!

    For those that can't get the 3 set screws off the gear, or the gear wont rotate because the set screws deformed the shaft too much: you can still fix the timing yourself. Take all the screws off the bottom of the machine, remove the base cover. Slide the belt off its gear, set the timing as described in this video. Try not to rotate the shaft and slide the belt back onto the gear. Way easier than bending allen wrenches

    The only step I didn’t understand is the adjusting of the needle in the top housing.
    Am I loosening it to make it move up and down or tightening it to keep it completely still?

    • @RnG_Ry
      @RnG_Ry Год назад +1

      How deep should the needle be?

    • @kevinsews
      @kevinsews  Год назад +2

      In the case of the one I was repairing on this video it was thrown out of time by trying to sew something that was way too heavy for this type of machine. This caused the needle to push up slightly. Therefore, it wasn't coming down to the lowest point timing wise. This means you have to loosen the needle bar screw and then rotate the wheel until the hook rotates around to the point it would be picking up the thread. Then you lower the needle to that point and tighten up the screw that holds it. This may require a slight adjustment, but it will get it close.

    Hello Kevin, Thanks very much for this very helpful video! I have a Singer heavy duty 4423 and it has never had a problem in it's 8 year life. I love it! However, it went dead head on me (hand wheel wouldn't turn, everything was locked up). In all those 8 years I never had it serviced so that was why I'm sure! I watched this and lots of your other videos and did everything you showed in them: i opened up the whole machine, got out all the lint, oiled and greased every moving part, and also loosened some of the screws to unlock the place were it had seized. I don't actually know where that was, but it got to working again, and when I put everything back together, everything retightened, it turned and worked except there was no stitch! That was when I watched this video again and adjusted the timing with the hook and needle, just like you said. I also watched your other post on adjusting the tensions on top and bottom, and did that too. Now I have the machine stitching ALMOST perfectly, but only straight stitch and only in the middle or far left position of the needle. Problems are, even as good as it gets there will be one or two missed stitches every 10-20 inches or so. Also it is cranky about the needles I use (it doesn't like a brand new one identical to the one it does like), and it refuses to do a zigzag stitch no matter what, eitehr doing a terrible straight stitch in place of it, or skipping so many stitches that it looks like a dying heartbeat! It will not stitch at all in the far right position. I don't see any problems inside (opened it up and looked thoroughly at it again). I have worked and worked at it (desperate to use it again!) but maybe this is just a problem with a diy-er tinkering so much with such a delicate machine! Can you give me any ideas? I'm pretty stuck and have now invested a lot of time into it! I could replace the entire bobbin case to see if the bobbin case is ruined in some way that I can't see. Anyway, I'd take a video of it or pics if that helped. Thanks for your consideration!

      All I do is place the machine in the widest zigzag and rotate the hook to see that it catches the thread on both the right and left. You may need to adjust the needle height at this point. These adjustments are almost always very slight. A tiny movement at this point cab make all the difference.

    • @rachelbeeman
      @rachelbeeman 3 года назад

      @@kevinsews Ok. I'll keep trying. I did set it on the widest zigzag the last time I adjusted the timing: and the hook was coming right above the needle's eye, just like it seems like it should. I guess I could buy a gauge and try to do it the way the repair manual specifies? If I were to adjust the needle height, what would I be looking for? I did loosen it but I didn't quite understand what height exactly it should be, if the needle eye is already going below the hook when they meet.

    • @kevinsews
      @kevinsews  3 года назад +1

      @@rachelbeeman You will notice the needle height issue when the needle swings to the left side. That is when you may need to make a very slight adjustment to the needle height to allow the hook to catch the thread. It is a balancing issue for sure because it has to be almost perfect to allow both sides to catch the thread with every size needle the machine supports. And yes, buying a gauge would be very helpful.

    Thank you so much for making this video, my singer 4423 had jammed, I followed all the steps and I have finally managed to fix it. I had to stop every step to get all the tools. I have learned a lot, it took me a month to fix it but I finally did it. When I was stitching checking if it timed, I wasn't closing the bottom cover, the thread was getting wrapped around the gears, and it was making a very loud sound. I couldn't see it because it going right under the felt between the gears. So now I understood why Kevin was closing the bottom cover and opening it up to adjust it. So follow every step in this video and you will go no wrong.

My Singer 4423 came out of box new with horrible timing difference like 180 degree between the hook and the needle. Without your tutorial I was about to mess the needle pole just to align it with the hook.
    Shame on Singer to ship machines with such flaw that requires a "Recall".

For some reason, loosening the Allen screws of timing did not work for me and did not rotate more than 90 degrees which was still far from the needle. Instead, I loosened the Allen screw of the hook's pole, pushed up with hook compartment, aligned it with needle at the position where it goes up, pushed the pole back in, and tightened its Allen screw. The machine now is functioning perfectly. I wish I can share a PDF of the part that I adjusted the hook. Many thanks again :)

      @@salroebuck8330 sorry for late answer. Okay, at minute 23:05 you will see the bottom of the hook pole base fixed with two screws on the sides and an allen on the top. Unscrew the base and loosen the allen then you can manually turn the hook pole to time/adjust the hook with needle right at the position when the needle would go up. You do this by turning the hand wheel to place the needle at the lowest position before going up. Now you can put back the hook pole base and tighten the allen. I hope I could clarify the process well. Good luck

    Kevin, you are amazing at teaching us how to do this stuff with our own machines! I had a problem awhile back with my upper and lower tensions and managed to find a groove in the needle plate. I filed it smoother with a metal nail file and it did ok but I was still having a problem with jamming so I ordered a new plate finally. THEN I lost one of the screws trying to replace the needle plate! SO, I began to take the machine apart to find that screw. I kinda tilted it upside down and back and forth before I did that. But I quit hearing it move around so I took it apart. I had not seen this video yet. I only saw the one showing how to service the machine. I ended up finding the online service manual and downloaded it to help me figure things out. It helped a lot except it didn’t show where and what kind of screws go back where.
    After I took that free arm slab thing off, I thought I would never get it back on but I finally managed to miraculously do it! Now I see you address removing that part in this video! However, I’m finding that I am missing a few screws (in more ways than machine wise! Hehe). So I am writing this long winded comment to ask if I am able to order replacement screws anywhere before I take this free arm slab off again to do the adjustments you describe here? My upper thread is not catching at all or even trying to catch. IT just spins around and around when I turn the handwheel. So I will try to be patient and see if you’re able to let me know if and where I can possibly order replacement screws. Either that or maybe I should buy another new machine? I already bout a singer 1500 that I dont like at all. If I take it back they will charge me to rebox and for Re shelving. I have people I can sell it to or give it to cuz I don’t like it at all. It makes me LOVE my HD 4423!

I’ve tried tightening the screws for that part but that hasn’t worked. It looks like it’s slightly bent so the thread keeps grabbing there. Should I try to fix it myself by bending it some (I have needle nose jewelry pliers) or just try to order a new one? My Janome built (90’s) Kenmore [which I’m onlyONLYonly-just learning to use] likely has multipleMULTIPLEmultiple shenanigans. The ‘hook’ is capturing but not releasing the thread. Additionally, it was the looping/bird’s nesting bobbin threads + hopping & bopping in concert, rocking the casing. I’ve adjusted tension here to yon and I just don’t yet know what the complete hey I’ve yet to well learn! Aaaaarrrrrgh. I’m going to look into ‘timing’. While ThisTHISThis wonderful offering is today a bit over my head I’m learning MoreMOREMore each day. I’ll be studying so thank you SO much Kevin!
