I can easily adjust the speed without taking anything apart. the model of my pedals is FDM FC-2902D. it is to CE europe standards if that can help you. back in the day here in the usa, my cheap singer machine had that external adjustment. i wonder if they make them without it now so that most folks take it in to a singer repair shop.
I checked my foot pedal as i have just finished sewing a big canvas project and the fast speed made it a nightmare. My pedal has a small hole where you can depress the pedal and insert a small jewelers screwdriver and adjust the speed, I did not know this !!! Now it is so controllable ! Thanks Kevin, much appreciated, you are my go too help line :-) Greetings from South Australia.
I have the 4432 (European version) of this machine, and the galloping speed as soon as you touched the lever with your foot has always been a bug bear of mine. I followed your steps (hoping that the pedal had the speed adjuster inside, it did!) and now I have a progressive speed pedal that I feel more in control of. Can't thank you enough Ken for this handy tip! You're the best.
I would give this video 100 thumbs up if I could. Got myself a Singer Heavy Duty recently and, although I like the machine, I was struggling with the fact that it seems to go from 0 to 100 mph with nothing in between. I'm what you might call an "experienced novice" so the ability to go slowly is important to me. In fact, given that what takes time in sewing is not the sewing itself but the measuring, cutting, pinning and ironing, I'm not sure why any home sewist really needs the ability to sew quickly. Anyway, it took me about 30 seconds to take the pedal apart, fiddle with the thingy to get the needle at the speed I want it, and put it back together. Thanks so much Kevin, you've made my day. BTW mine is a European version.
Mate! Been searching for months how slow down machine foot pedal. I have tried countless combinations of search phrases. The algorithm has not been on your side until today. Thank you.
We watched this video, and got hold of our foot pedal, and my husband slowed it down, result. So he also did the same to my new back up foot pedal, both work a treat, easier for doing my small bits of stitching . I’m in the uk, so mine was the same as in the us. Maybe slightly different position. Thanks
Thank you so much for this video - I've been recently trying to learn how to sew and the takeoff speed of my Singer 4432 has been driving me insane. Your instructions worked perfectly. I was starting to think I was going to have to give up and get a different machine, but hopefully this will solve my problems.

I watched your video a few days ago and I am happy to report that the Singer HD6335M (aka 4432 version with more accessories) here in Europe (UK & ROI) also comes with a foot controller that has the same speed adjustment in place (slightly different circuit board layout). I was able to slow down my sewing machine as well. Thank you.

Kevin, thanks so much for this video explaining how to slow down a singer foot pedal. Although we have 220v in India and i have an 8280 model. I had to turn the speed control clockwise to make it slower. But this great! I can finally sew slowly which is really helpful for a beginner. A big thank you!
This was super helpful I have a brother Xm2701 and it was way too fast. I used a skewer stick to adjust because I didn't wanna take any chances, now the speed is to my liking and I dont have to be so anxious on the startup. Great video!
This video was so helpful thank you. I bought the Singer HD as a ‘smoother’ more up to date model from my old semi industrial Janome. I was almost at the point of selling on my Singer, so I could buy a slower brand/model with more control. Your video has just made my day here in the UK! Thank you
Thank you so much for this video! My 2006 mechanical Kenmore has similar parts inside the pedal. Not just like it, but enough to recognize some of the parts and what you were doing. So I fiddled with the screw thing and turned it to 6 o'clock. That little white roller thing had to be positioned behind a pyramid-shaped wedge in order to be able to push the pedal down. So I had to use a butter knife to keep it positioned behind the wedge as I was closing the case. I did not have my machine plugged into the electrical outlet while I was working on it. I was too nervous to do so. But guess what? I plugged it back in, turned it on and it worked! Thanks!
Fantastic! I just did this on my Singer 4423. Easy! I was about to buy a new machine. I was afraid to test it plugged in, so I just set it between 6 and 7 and it was perfect! It used to grind at the beginning- now it doesn't. Wow. Thank-you

Oh my goodness! You have possibly saved my relationship with Florence (I name the objects in the house I am particularly struggling with). Can't thank you enough for this. Sue
Thank you!!! I have the Singer Heavy Duty version. I never felt like I had control of this machine, since it took off like a bat out of you know what, and kept on at that speed! I followed your directions and it worked. Now, maybe my seams will look more uniform, like I know what I'm doing, Lol :)
I have one of these machines and I'm surprised and disappointed that it didn't come with a manual speed control feature. It seems obvious to me that they should have included it like so many other entry-level machines.
I just used this method on my Singer 1408 (EU 220v version) which I got secondhand and it worked! Thank you😁I almost wanted to buy another sewing machine.
Thanks for this great video! I followed your directions exactly, had no difficulties, and got the results I wanted. A slower starting speed is especially helpful when I'm doing free motion embroidery on my Singer Heavy Duty 4423.
Hi! What's the model of your pedal please? I'm desperately trying to find a solution for my current university project, I have two pedals and none have this feature 😢
Thanks for the video. Another option would be to buy a cheap phase controller from ebay, aliexpress or banggood and plug your machine into the controller without adjusting the pot inside the food pedal switch.
UK version (Cambodian, I believe) I have is layed out differently, but using the same tecnique as yours gets you there in the end. I can now sew at sublight speeds which is great for a noob. Thank you for posting this video. It only took me a couple of minutes but has helped tremendously.
Singer 4452 in Canada that I just bought the other week. Took my pedal apart, instead of a set screw mine has a mosfet. Unable to change, but instead I just super glued a piece of wood onto the pedal so I couldn't go any faster than I need to.
thank you so much !! I was so ready to cry when I watched another video saying I needed parts and had tools I didn’t have, but I turned the little dial thingy and it worked perfectly !! :)) thank you so much.
It really works! My model is Singer Heavy Duty 4423. The only difference is it actually speeds up when I turn the screw to the left. It slows down when I turn it to the right. Big big thanks!
We ordered the 4423 model from us, which initially came with us outlet; in addition, we bought an eu outlet adapter, and as you might assume it was running so fast. I did try to lower the speed in the pedal as shown on the video, but no luck unfortunately. However, I thought that maybe the problem was with that eu adapter we bought, so after receiving the European version of the pedal the issue was resolved, I still needed to lower the speed in the pedal, but at least it allowed me to set the needed one. I hope it is helpful for someone in the future.
The US Energy grind operates on a different frequency. Probably not a good idea to import a product like this. Nothing in the foot pedal will shift the frequency. You don't need to pop the pedal open anymore since they have an access screw now but I had to take a look. Looks like they only changed the component placement and added an access hole to the potentiometer.
THANK YOU, Kevin, this WILL certainly help me on my sewing of Gear and putting on things like Webbing, Scratching type Para Cord on my tents and all that type of sewing and Backpacks too👍🏼
This is the exact speed controller for my dear little Brother XL-3600 (bought in 2006) and your instructions on how to slow it down worked perfectly (apart from the fact that it was necessary to turn the little screw clockwise to soften the speed - so it must be wired differently). Thank you so much for posting this!
I bought some refurbished Singer 4411 sewing machines for my classroom; the foot pedal on them has one speed: Mario Andrade! Thanks so much for the tutorial video :-)
Thank you Kevin! I have bought a new Singer 411 european version in Italy(220/240V). There is a difference compared with your version: inside the pedal there is a silver screw, that is slightly on the right of the screws you adjust in the video. When you turn the screw counterclockwise the engine slows down. Perfect sewing machine.
Excellent info! I ordered the 4452 last Friday, hopefully I'll get it (1st ever sewing machine) this week. This will be the first thing I do, if needed.
Can't thank you enough for this help! My new Singer Promise was consigned to the cupboard a few years ago after my first efforts failed dismally, but I recently decided to try again, and use Google to help me which led me here. I'm now producing cute little stuffed puppies in all sorts of fabrics! 😆 Thank you!
Many thanks for this video, Kevin. Very clear and concise. I've followed your instructions with success, even though I'm in UK with a UK Singer HD 5523, bought only last month, ie Dec 2021 :)
My wife was very disappointed with the fast speed of this machine that she was going to basically give up using it and go back to her old machine. After seeing your video, we made the exact adjustment you recommended and it works great! Thanks so much for your efforts.
I really appreciate this video. I bought my Singer Heavy Duty 4432 four years ago and it was my first machine. I had a really hard time with the speed though, as it would go from 0 to nearly full speed no matter how slowly I pressed the pedal controller and I could only get a slower speed by easing off once the machine started sewing. I even phoned singer to complain and they sent me a new foot pedal which worked slightly better, but person I talked to never even mentioned the possibility of adjusting the sensitivity on the inside of the pedal. *facepalm* I just opened both my pedals and they both have the place to adjust the speed. The make numbers (I assume) on the bottom of the pedals are 8401 for the one that came with my machine, and 8501 for the replacement one I was sent. Both pedals provide better speed control now that I have adjusted them. I am in Canada.
@@kevinsews I just looked back at my invoice and email and I purchased my machine in September 2018, and talked to customer service and was mailed a replacement foot pedal in December 2018. So only 2 years ago. It would be interesting to know if the speed adjustment was a recently removed feature or a recently added one. Can you tell me the make number of the foot controller you bought that does not have the speed control? I fount the number on the top left of the bottom label above the letters FDM.

I followed your advice (here in France) and it gave a great result in the control of the slow speed. Thanks a lot!
Thank you! Glad to hear that it helped.
Thanks!
My pleasure! That is great to hear. Thank you for letting us all know it worked.
Fantastic! I just did this on my Singer 4423. Easy! I was about to buy a new machine. I was afraid to test it plugged in, so I just set it between 6 and 7 and it was perfect! It used to grind at the beginning- now it doesn't. Wow. Thank-you
That great to hear. Thanks!
Hi! What's the model of your pedal please? I'm desperately trying to find a solution for my current university project, I have two pedals and none have this feature 😢
I haven't found this tip anywhere in the internet. BIG THANK YOU
You’re welcome!
I just purchased a signer HD in August 2024 and this worked for me! Thank you so much!
My Pleasure! I am glad to hear it worked for you.
Thank you! I have this same Singer and the speed has been an issue when sewing intricate applique.
You're welcome!
Oh my goodness! You have possibly saved my relationship with Florence (I name the objects in the house I am particularly struggling with). Can't thank you enough for this. Sue
Thank you! I am glad it was helpful.
That is great to hear!
I have one of these machines and I'm surprised and disappointed that it didn't come with a manual speed control feature. It seems obvious to me that they should have included it like so many other entry-level machines.
The latest release on this machine is an electronic version. It allows you to adjust the speed control.
I just used this method on my Singer 1408 (EU 220v version) which I got secondhand and it worked! Thank you😁I almost wanted to buy another sewing machine.
Thanks for letting all of know this!
Thank you so much! What a difference this has made to my singer 5523 uk version. Can't thank you enough 😊
You're welcome! I am glad to hear it worked for you.
A GENIUNE THANK YOU, I KNOW THIS IS ALL CAPS BUT THIS IS HOW I EXPRESS JOY AND MY SEWING MACHINE IS NORMAL NOW! THANK YOU THANK YOU!Z!
My pleasure!
Thank you so much! Worked on my Singer as well. You saved me from buying a new machine. 😅 Cheers from Sweden.
You're welcome!
Thanks for this great video! I followed your directions exactly, had no difficulties, and got the results I wanted. A slower starting speed is especially helpful when I'm doing free motion embroidery on my Singer Heavy Duty 4423.
You’re welcome! I am glad to hear it worked.
Hi! What's the model of your pedal please? I'm desperately trying to find a solution for my current university project, I have two pedals and none have this feature 😢
Thank you for the help! I’ve had my heavy duty singer for almost 2 years now. Finally had the courage to try this. Totally worth it
You’re welcome! Let us know how it works out for you.
Still works, even on EU version too!
Thank you Kevin!
Thanks for letting us know.
Thanks for the video. Another option would be to buy a cheap phase controller from ebay, aliexpress or banggood and plug your machine into the controller without adjusting the pot inside the food pedal switch.
Thank you Kevin. This was so helpful, a game changer for me. I had been really concerned about the fast speed. Great help. Judy
My pleasure!
Thank you, I was apprehensive on purchasing an HD machine, but with this instruction I'm going to give it a go.
You're welcome!
Thank you SO much for this! You just saved me a LOT of hassle and helped me enjoy my machine more.
You're welcome!
Thank you so much for putting out this video. It helped me with my new heavy duty singer. I was almost ready to send it back when I found your video.
My pleasure!
UK version (Cambodian, I believe) I have is layed out differently, but using the same tecnique as yours gets you there in the end.
I can now sew at sublight speeds which is great for a noob.
Thank you for posting this video. It only took me a couple of minutes but has helped tremendously.
You're welcome! I am glad to hear it helped.
Singer 4452 in Canada that I just bought the other week. Took my pedal apart, instead of a set screw mine has a mosfet. Unable to change, but instead I just super glued a piece of wood onto the pedal so I couldn't go any faster than I need to.
Gotta do what you can to fix this issue. LOL
I have one from Canada and I've got the same problem! Tried this hack but it didn't help 😭
Thank you so much Kevin🙏 I just bought the “heavy duty” and now I can start slow… thanks to your explanation 🎉
Hi from the Netherlands 🇳🇱 🌷🪡🧵👋
@@lisette7640 You’re welcome!
thank you so much !! I was so ready to cry when I watched another video saying I needed parts and had tools I didn’t have, but I turned the little dial thingy and it worked perfectly !! :)) thank you so much.
Great! You're welcome!
I have an Australian bought singer heavy duty, looks a teeny bit different inside but I finally have control of my machine. Thank you.
You're welcome!
It really works! My model is Singer Heavy Duty 4423. The only difference is it actually speeds up when I turn the screw to the left. It slows down when I turn it to the right. Big big thanks!
That Is great to hear!
It worked perfectly on my heavy duty 4423! Thank you so much, you just made my work so much easier :)
You're welcome!
Thanks for posting this!
Can’t wait to get home and try this. This could be a game changer!!
Reporting back to say that it did indeed work! Can still get to the same speed but the build up has slowed down
That is great to hear! Thank you for the update.
Thank you for the video. I have a 44s classic, but no matter how i moved it, it kept going fast
Nemesis Rosado I have one as well. I will take a look at mine and let you know what I find.
@@kevinsews Thank you, i'm a newbie so your videos are much appreciated ☺
THANK YOU, Kevin, this WILL certainly help me on my sewing of Gear and putting on things like Webbing, Scratching type Para Cord on my tents and all that type of sewing and Backpacks too👍🏼
My pleasure!
This is fantastic. Thank you. I could not even sew the way it came!
You're welcome!
Thank you for letting us know!
Thank you tor this SUPER HELPFUL video!!! The original machine speed is nothing short of terrifying! 😂
You're welcome!
I bought some refurbished Singer 4411 sewing machines for my classroom; the foot pedal on them has one speed: Mario Andrade! Thanks so much for the tutorial video :-)
You're welcome!
Thanks for the tips. I have done as you have described, and now it is working very well and smoothly.
That is great to hear! Thanks for letting us all know.
Very helpful! I have one similar to this as my first machine. And there have been times where the speed becomes frustrating.
Great! This why I decided to post this video. I figured it might be helpful.
Federico Albasio Thank you for letting us know. It will be helpful for those who have the same version machine you own.
thank you very very much!! I have been struggling with this high speed.., You changed my sawing life so much better, thank you!!!
ツノちゃん My pleasure!
The foot has a hole where you can insert a screw driver to turn the speed adjustment without opening it!
Mine didn’t have one. Maybe some other model pedals do though.
@@kevinsews The pedal is a FC-2902D, which is a pedal of a Singer 4423, purchased in 2024, EU model.
@@EconaelGaming Ah, that explains the difference.
@StelutaSabau I used... a very thin screwdriver. One from those cheap "micro precision screwdriver" sets.
Did it work for you? I tried it and now my machine goes so fast I cannot use it. Trying to figure out what to do since it doesn’t go back to normal
Thanks so much, fixed our machine in 5 minutes
Well done! Very good result
You're welcome! That is great to hear.
Excellent info! I ordered the 4452 last Friday, hopefully I'll get it (1st ever sewing machine) this week. This will be the first thing I do, if needed.
Great! Let us know the results.
I am glad to hear it was helpful.
I’m so glad that I googled the speed problem on my 4432 machine and got this video. Thank you!!❤
My pleasure!
Thank you SO MUCH! I was never able to do the curves right with my 4432 until I saw this. This is an EXCELLENT video!
My pleasure!
I just did this on my singer CG 590. I honestly thought I was going to have to live with this monster! THANK YOU!
That is great to hear! Thank you for letting us all know it worked for you.
Thank you SO MUCH! I was about to return my Singer 44S and you save my day! it works perfectly, thanks for sharing your knowledge.
You're welcome!
Turned it right down and it worked fine. Thank you so much. Mine was almost either on or off.
You're welcome!
Thanks for this, Yesterday I was actually wondering how I could adjust the speed on my Singer machine👌🏾🙏🏾
I can't grantee your machine's foot will have this feature, but it is fairly easy to check.
Kevin Sews Ok I will check👌🏾
Many thanks for this video, Kevin. Very clear and concise. I've followed your instructions with success, even though I'm in UK with a UK Singer HD 5523, bought only last month, ie Dec 2021 :)
You're welcome! Happy New Year!
My wife was very disappointed with the fast speed of this machine that she was going to basically give up using it and go back to her old machine. After seeing your video, we made the exact adjustment you recommended and it works great! Thanks so much for your efforts.
I am glad it was helpful.
You're welcome! Thanks for all of the info.
@@kevinsews The parts that adjusts the speed is called a Variable Resistor. Hence the VR next to it.
You are AWESOME!!! 🎉 I’ve been having a Donald Duck style battle with my foot pedal for weeks! Thank you 🙏
You're welcome!
Excellent instruction. Singer should have set their machine like this - OR make this speed adjustment available for users.
Thank you! I agree they should allow the user to make adjustments.
Super! Just made my wife very happy with this adjustment!
Jim Coun Great to hear that. Thanks for letting me know.
Thank you I wasn’t sure what was going on one day. It was sewing like normal and then the next day it was going 90. It’s back to sewing normal thanks to you.
My pleasure!
