@Teddy Li that is so true. I'm flight attendant and I was asking our pilots what they thought 1st thing the weather was not good 2nd (not saying Kobe was like this) but celebrities dont care and want to be somewhere at this time no questions asked. 3rd its weird how the pilot veered off
@Kewana Nedd I think so too. He was finally cleared to take off, but according to one experienced pilot he may have become disoriented. No amount of money would be enough to get in a helicopter with weather like that.
@@PFlower15 It's true. We all know it's the law and that no one lives forever. 12kadira I hear you man, personally I think the pilot was selfish if he didn’t mention anything to his passengers, 15 minutes is a lot of time to make a decision, if police and news choppers were grounded that day why even fly. Wish outcome would have been different.

No kidding. I think we've all had a "close call" story after some time flying. We also set a series of "decision points" to establish a "fuck this shit" decision point to avoid getting to that IIMC point. Hell, I've landed at an airfield with birds in the pattern after returning SVFR in a hurry. Thought fuck it, we'll do some traffic pattern work. Tower clears me for left closed traffic and about 100 feet prior to traffic pattern altitude I start scraping clouds again. On the downwind I ask Tower like "are well calling this thing or what?" This MFer comes back with "yeah, we were going to call the field IFR after you landed." Like....mfer why'd you let me take off?! Can't always count on TWR and ATIS.
That part got me thinking too. Holding for 15min is way too long. He knew something was up and sounded nervous when he said "okay we'll continue holding." ???

@@RS_Alvarado4 Exactly. Some were saying Kobe was found with his arms wrapped around his daughter. Can't be true because everyone has to wear seatbelts that strap around chest. Like you, I prayed it was just over.💔
Unfortunately, they knew something was wrong. They were flying in clouds completely blind with a pilot asking for visual help. I am a pilot myself and this pilot basically was on a suicide mission flying in conditions like this. He was using the freeway as a makeshift GPS because he didn't have IFR rated instruments. So he made a special VFR flight, in IFR conditions. Its his job as a pilot to keep visual separation at all times. The part that kills me is the pilot outright LIES at one point. The METAR is 1100FT visibility and he claims he is at 1500FT VFR. The pilot was Scud Running in Fog and nobody survives scud running in a canyon in fog.
Bad weather. Sad they didn't just take a private transport from Burbank or van Nuys. These loss of lives could have been prevented. I still cant accept it...
You know I'm really thnking no one even knew, unless the pilot had a medical emergency, if it was so foggy as everyone is saying then they never saw it coming 😪😪
Andrew Spoto I think of that too. If the blade clipped the hill then descended? The fear they felt. Although they said they should’ve died on impact. These babies aren’t here anymore.
No, cause at that point there was no danger at all. They were waiting for air traffic to clear and that's it. Clearly whatever happened, happened right before the crash. It looks like something happened to the pilot.
@@haydencook682 Could simply be vertigo. He had lost sight of the ground, and pulled hard up, likely to stay clear of the terrain. Strong acceleration and no visual cues leads to a rapid drift in the sense of orientation. The pilot may think he is level when he is actually in a bank, or vice versa. When you can't tell if you are stalling, diving or spiralling, you don't know how, if or when to recover.
Seems like the pilot was definitely disoriented with his surroundings and the fog. Looks like he was trying to turn back around but lost control. This is just beyond tragic

*FACTS* • The helicopter could fly in zero visibility conditions (foggy weather was not an issue) • The pilot had 20 years of experience • The pilot stopped answering the radio approx 50 seconds before the crash took place • The helicopter dropped 325 feet In 14 seconds, reaching 176 mph in the process *The pilot probably had a heart attack or a stroke*
They said all victims died from blunt force trauma. If it was a medical issue for the pilot, wouldn't that be listed on the coroner's report? Just curious.
N.L. Hudson i mean its easy to assume that it was blunt force trauma considering what happened. Not sure if they went as far as to check past that or of the bodies are even in the condition where they would know
The irony is Kobe took the Helicopter to avoid traffic. It was Sunday and traffic should've been much lesser. Also, they were circling for more than 15 minutes. Maybe, they should've landed and take off again.
You know they didn’t hit the fog until the mountains came about? Which was about 30 minutes into the flight. An they were circling due to other planes in the same area. Not because of anything else. So him taking that heli was not his fault. It was clear where they left from.
Traffic is still bad on Sundays in LA. It's bad all the time. Orange County to Thousand Oaks can take 2-3 hours. Helicopter is under an hour. Wish they would have drove but you can't blame them.

There was no perceived emergency. The conditions were bad, but presumably manageable. He was trying to climb to get out of the fog, but ended up getting disoriented and quickly lost control of the chopper. By the time he knew he was in an emergency situation it was too late.

It seems that he never was in contact with the hand-off between controllers in the final minutes of flight!

I thought the same thing. It's like he was flying blindly in that fog. Everybody on board must of been nervous from the start. I'm now thinking they didn't realise they was going to die so suddenly
seems experienced pilots just dont do that. they are trained to fly not to cancel the flights. this only regular(normal) people would do. but that's the reason they never fly.
@Mook Wolf flying blind doesn't explain the dropping 300 feet in 14 second and reaching up to 170mph. In that weather no pilot would intentionally fly the irradically. Maybe engine failure and because of fog it was too difficult to properly do an auto rotation landing is my guess
4:45 the pilot sounds nervous and distressed with a nervousness in his voice. whoa...conditions were getting bad or he must have had a bad feeling about this...
The FAA’s helicopter flying handbook states that losing all visual references during a flight “can cause sensory overload” for a pilot, who can then lose the ability to think rationally. This is most likely what happened. My family friend is a pilot and said that he once flew into fog and couldn’t tell that his plane was on a 40 degree angle ... Up was down, down was up, fast seemed slow, etc. it was the worst experience of his life. This is probably what happened.
@@angelpaige685 he is responsible because he made them take the 101 instead of the 118. The reason was so he could show others his academy from the air
We don't know the pilot, - please be respectful. I was just told the pilot was a VERY experienced one, who had flown this route many many times in all kind of weather. There is a Police helicopter pad little under a mile from the crash, - maybe he knew this and could therefore answer the sudden last turn. So sad.
Maybe he had a seizure or something because he stops talking and whenever they would ask him stuff prior he would answer quickly then all of a sudden he stops answering and guns it or heart attack or he just decided to end this .. it’s not normal
Idk but seems like some kind of malfunction as they lost contact..seems kinda like he tried to regain control and it just nose dived. He didn’t sound like someone trying to die.
Debra Salinas - Those videos from the ground were NOT in the area that it was foggy... just low clouds. And, the area they crashed in had hills and mountains at a higher elevation and had fog coming in from the ocean through the pass that highway 101 goes through
He probably he couldn’t see, turned around and dropped altitude to get under then fog but seems like he ignored or couldn’t hear the air control person. By then it was to late
yeah maybe the pilot disoriented with the fogs and had an attack that triggered their horrible situation and this happened very quickly maybe during that transition from van nuys to socal
You actually only are hearing one side of the convo when hes taking to Socal because the Helicopter's side wasn't being recorded. A expert pointed this out in another video.

Dee .F.D You’re an Idiot. You also can’t spell. Just because the pilot had 13 years experience, doesn’t mean anything. I would tell you to watch the video and listen to the audio, but you’re too stupid to understand it.
To those of you asking if the pilot had a medical emergency, there's no reason to come to that conclusion. This was a textbook case of spatial disorientation. The pilot knew that he couldn't proceed any further and was trying to climb up to a safe altitude to avoid the terrain and head back the way he came. The problem is it's very easy to drift when hovering in fog, and when you climb in those conditions you can easily lose control and end up inverting the craft with too little altitude to recover. It can happen to the best of them, and happen fast. Kind of a perfect storm scenario. The delay at Burbank allowed the conditions in Calabasas to deteriorate before they could get through. The terrain, the fog, the frustration, the kids ... one slight lapse of judgment and it's over.
This is the most likely scenario that has happened many times before. Just last year a pilot crashed into a tower in New York with heavy fog and low visibility. If only the helicopter had a CVR and FDR, would have better data than what the flight tracker shows.
It wasn't Kobe's fault, they interviewed another pilot who he use to fly with Kobe all the time and asked if Kobe had ever pressured him about flying in unsafe weather and he said no Kobe was all about safety. And if the pilot would of said its not safe to fly Kobe being the family man he is he would not of put all their lives at risk like that!
The owner or lessee (lease) in this case always has the last say on GO or No Go. That guy was Kobe Bryant. Bryant trusted the pilot and the other 7 passengers trusted Bryant.
I think he did but you know my boy kobe wanted everything on that same spot. He was a guy that wanted everything good and well done. Maybe the pilot follow kobe orders instead of the airport.
Wow now I feel that something malfunctioned in mid air because the pilot was responding very consciously and then the plane just veered and all of a sudden it was flying too low to get further following instructions..... man this breaks my heart...
It was foggy on that day. Pilot had planned to use the highway as a visual reference but the visibility must have been horrible if he had to fly so close to the ground. It's quite likely that the pilot had tried to u-turn out of the area. Unfortunately, due to the poor visibility, he ended up diving into the side of the hill. ppl think it's a textbook example of CFIT (controlled flight into terrain), a combination of bad weather plus human error.
Nothing malfunctioned. Many pilts die by going into the clouds. Your helicopter can go sideways/upside down in literally 5 seconds if youre not paying attention to instruments or making great effort to remain level without looking at instruments.
@@melvinthedeathless.melvint6727 He wasn't close to the ground, he climbed into the clouds in the final moments of the crash, then came plummeting down at extremely high speeds. Obvious indication that he lost control.
Your question is the same question from the people who knew about operating helicopter. VFR vs IFR; he chose VFR. I think he should choose IFR mode to fly in that condition right?
I think he got disoriented once he climbed into the clouds to avoid terrain. I feel that explains the sudden and rapid drop in altitude at the end. It's very difficult to go from VFR to IFR at low altitude in mountainous terrain. It can get the best of us! So it seems it did...
Ironically, the NTSB has recommended (which is all they can do) that black boxes be mandatory in helicopters. It's the FAA who is responsible for the regulations, and they haven't followed through on the NTSB suggestions.
Something went wrong.. when he tried to climb high above the weather... after a minute it was like his mind could tell left from right. He freaked out.
So your gonna fucking try to talk while dropping like a lead ball moron? Or are you gonnna try every trick of the trade to regain control? Here im free falling let me see what air traffic control can do for me . Grow up nut job conspiracy theorist.
Actually the pilot was still talking to the air traffic controller, however the pilots voice was not recorded when he switched over to SoCal a.t.c. This is explained in another video, go to 7:00 on the following... ruclips.net/video/t7dHUCnxQD0/видео.html
Is it me or did the pilot say 34.2 instead of 134.2? He was on the wrong channel and in vfr conditions he needed guidance. Once he couldn’t establish the 134.2 which was the correct channel, he was at 34.2 because you can here him say that and not the 134.2. The fog got him disoriented.
Other LA based Helo Pilots are saying he hit a wall of fog and either tried to go up to clear it or turn around. But in both instances he looses his sense of level and spatial surrounding because of the fog and the Helo went hard left down and was not enough time to recover. But heart attack or health episode was my next theory too! Also he would have seen the fog and disobeyed company policy and the FAA by flying into the fog. So he is sadly negligent on that count. Also why was he flying do fast into inclement weather with known hills in his flight plan.
I’ve been thinking something might have happened to the pilot too but if that happened I think the crash would have landed on a house or a street or store but it crashed out where nobody was so I think the pilot was aware of that and tried to steer them away from a place that people were likely at
Other reports are conflicting this. It has been said that he was going to climb for flight following. Why has that audio not been available when all the rest has? I want the black box data.
My guess is this pilot flew into a cloud or heavy fog which caused 0 visibility and instead of switching to IFR (Instrument flight rules) he tried to fly out of the fog without visual references. He banked hard to the left without knowing his position relative to the ground which caused the helicopter to pick up speed. When he finally excited the fog he was to low and going to fast and was unable to avoid crashing into the ground.
It was spatial disorientation. Pure and simple. Another factor: I just read LA Times article "Helicopter diverted from usual route." The transition from following Hwy 118 west to Camarillo, to flying southwest to intersect and follow (the usual) 101 west, proved deadly...I think pilot wanted to usual his usual 101 route to destination so much so that he flew to the path with the worst weather. He could've just followed the 118 west ALL the way to Camarillo since he was VFR when flying up there at 1500' MSL (per radio call before he requested turn to SW to get to 101); it was more inland, further from coast and fog. So sad... so unforgiving... sigh...Here's the LA Times piece: www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-01-27/kobe-bryant-helicopter-crash-becomes-focus-of-intense-federal-investigation

FitLife 120 no, not necessarily. Statistics prove its more likely you’ll die on the ground in a car than any mode of air travel...regardless of weather.
FitLife 120 the point is if there was reason NOT to fly he wouldn’t have flight clearance from the numerous ATCs (air traffic control centers) during the SCHEDULED flight path...they didn’t just randomly decide to fly to the camp that day...Kobe’s pilot likely had an entire month or beyond tentative flight schedules submitted. Helicopters aren’t cars, you don’t just hop into one and fly around...clearance is required for all take offs and landings AT ALL TIMES...violating these regs would cause a pilot a citation and likely suspension of their FAA pilot’s license...in other words...pilots aren’t “drivers”...pilots don’t ‘make the call’ to fly or not, ATC does. Google FAA rules and regs sometimes. Respectfully, Nurse Dee, USAF Veteran pilot and current civilian licensed pilot. :)
The most important information here is why did he not respond, what happened the last 30 seconds, it's like he had a stroke or something, now that would make sense to all this, slumped over and accelerated, that's the only thing I can think of the facts given...
Jerome Garcia exactly I originally thought he maintained radio communication but now it’s obvious something either went wrong with the helicopter or the pilot.
It is a possibility that foul play is the culprit. I have heard that Kobe had made a disparaging comment about Donald Trump. [ www.snopes.com/fact-check/kobe-bryant-trump-quote/ ] ...... So, is this what may have happened to the Hellicopter? VIDEO: ruclips.net/video/-9WcxqQbGn0/видео.html I have seen a VIDEO of 2 helicopters flying over the crash site. I don't know how long after the crash happened that these 2 helicopters were over the crash site..... probably not too long after it happened, though. The fog didn't look so bad then...just saying.
I’ve never been in a helicopter before but the circling of the same area would’ve probably raised my suspicions as a passenger. Kobe Bryant had been on countless flights, I wonder did he or anyone else start to question the situation to themselves or aloud. RIP to all souls lost on board.
Helicopters fall out the sky a lot. I wouldn't fuck with them. But this wasn't intentional. This was a major fuck up. NTSB said this helicopter did not have the safety devices needed to fly around that terrain in foggy conditions. Altitude changes quickly around hills. The gage could be reading 1500 ft but if the terrain rises it will be to late to notice in the fog and without the proper devices.
Flying 1400 in heavy urban area puts a varity of things in your path. Birds, Wires, Towers, Drones just to name a few. To be honest this was suicide from the start. Million dollar aircraft has more than enough instruments to guide a pilot.
Yet no helicopter terrain awareness and warning system. Thanks, FAA!! The NTSB has been pushing for HTAWS and black boxes on helios for over a decade now. The FAA is really the tombstone agency. They let the bodies pile up before they do anything.
@@gt362gamer They are not required by the FAA to have them even after decades of fatal crashes. Most rescue and emergency helicopters use them. This situation is so terribly sad. I don't know if an HTAWS would have helped. The pilot may have been transitioning from VFR(visual) to IMC (instrument) and lost control. It happens way too often. Unfortunately, public and proactive safety measures are NOT the top priority of the FAA.
Safety should've come first with how bad the fog was. This accident didn't have to happen. Very tragic.
They all took the risk. Very sad 💔 I hope this will change the way things are done, as one of the interviews pilots said.
@Teddy Li that is so true. I'm flight attendant and I was asking our pilots what they thought
1st thing the weather was not good
2nd (not saying Kobe was like this) but celebrities dont care and want to be somewhere at this time no questions asked.
3rd its weird how the pilot veered off
The pilot had special training to fly in those weather conditions.
Yeah but looking at how far they flew It's possible that the fog wasn't that thick where they was flying to at the time of takeoff.
@Kewana Nedd I think so too. He was finally cleared to take off, but according to one experienced pilot he may have become disoriented. No amount of money would be enough to get in a helicopter with weather like that.
The most painful thing is that nothing will bring them back. And that's what so unbearable about the untimely death of these people.

It's true. We all know it's the law and that no one lives forever. But this a tragedy that perhaps could have been avoided, if only someone had the foresight to meticulously check the weather, check to see why the police helicopters were not flying that day. And a wise pilot might have said; hey, let's turn back because things don't look too good?
pikenova48 I think that’s where the problem intensified.. it was too late to go back and with having that route mapped in his head and the little he can see with the experience he had he took that deadly risk

Can't always count on TWR and ATIS.

seems experienced pilots just dont do that. they are trained to fly not to cancel the flights. this only regular(normal) people would do. but that's the reason they never fly.
@Mook Wolf we have no idea. There's no data box.
@Mook Wolf flying blind doesn't explain the dropping 300 feet in 14 second and reaching up to 170mph. In that weather no pilot would intentionally fly the irradically. Maybe engine failure and because of fog it was too difficult to properly do an auto rotation landing is my guess
Riley Christian or maybe a missile hit it 🤷🏽♂️ fell that quick that high? Hmmmmm
4:45 the pilot sounds nervous and distressed with a nervousness in his voice. whoa...conditions were getting bad or he must have had a bad feeling about this...
I don't hear what you do
The FAA’s helicopter flying handbook states that losing all visual references during a flight “can cause sensory overload” for a pilot, who can then lose the ability to think rationally.
This is most likely what happened. My family friend is a pilot and said that he once flew into fog and couldn’t tell that his plane was on a 40 degree angle ... Up was down, down was up, fast seemed slow, etc. it was the worst experience of his life. This is probably what happened.

Why did the chopper lack the instruments to fly itself.
But he could have had a medical emergency as well , right? If so, that could explain the reason why the helicopter veered off course.
He is also a older man
Pilots make mistakes no matter how experienced you are.
@bobsidog I’m not sure if it did, though

Debra Salinas - Those videos from the ground were NOT in the area that it was foggy... just low clouds. And, the area they crashed in had hills and mountains at a higher elevation and had fog coming in from the ocean through the pass that highway 101 goes through
I think the pilot got disoriented because of thick fog, and he's turning 180 to back on track
The pilot should’ve landed instead of circling that airspace, It would’ve taken them 45mins tops to get there via car from that spot
He probably he couldn’t see, turned around and dropped altitude to get under then fog but seems like he ignored or couldn’t hear the air control person. By then it was to late
Tsunami Waving you can’t just land where ever you feel like lol

Becki Green stfu
The terrain, the fog, the frustration, the kids ... one slight lapse of judgment and it's over.
that sums it up.
Jew and Greek so it just stalled out and they hit a free fall?
Reasonable scenario 👍makes sense..
This is the most likely scenario that has happened many times before. Just last year a pilot crashed into a tower in New York with heavy fog and low visibility. If only the helicopter had a CVR and FDR, would have better data than what the flight tracker shows.
I agree
No way such an experienced pilot would fall to the ground at that speed. It was either intentional or he passed out from so much pressure and anxiety.

Stolen comment
Obvious indication that he lost control.

iHateDentists in the ocean water can have whirlpool effect. Can that apply with clouds too?
My question is, If he couldn't see the ground through the dense cloud cover, why didn't he watch his Altimeter to determine his elevation? So sad.
It literally could be anything. Won't know for a while
Altimeters dont detect hills and mountains, they measure air column pressure. Radar detects mountains and hills.
Looks like a malfunction not pilot mistake...
Flight data recorder should have been installed really and a camera should have been installed too.

FAA, how is a Black Box not mandatory? Now we may never know if it was a mechanical problem or the pilot was disoriented.
Ironically, the NTSB has recommended (which is all they can do) that black boxes be mandatory in helicopters. It's the FAA who is responsible for the regulations, and they haven't followed through on the NTSB suggestions.
That helicopter has two engines and can fly with one working. Rest assured, it was the pilot error.
In not one comment do I see people commenting on how the eye witness said they heard the engine stall out right before the crash

Other LA based Helo Pilots are saying he hit a wall of fog and either tried to go up to clear it or turn around. But in both instances he looses his sense of level and spatial surrounding because of the fog and the Helo went hard left down and was not enough time to recover.

He could've just followed the 118 west ALL the way to Camarillo since he was VFR when flying up there at 1500' MSL (per radio call before he requested turn to SW to get to 101); it was more inland, further from coast and fog. NY Nurse obvisously mean the pilot shouldnt have even flown considering the conditions... this was totally preventable
FitLife 120 no, not necessarily.
Statistics prove its more likely you’ll die on the ground in a car than any mode of air travel...regardless of weather.
NY Nurse i hear u but if there’s indications of horrible weather causing low visibility then no one should make the call to travel is the point!

Was thinking similar after watching the video
I think it was all planned
I had that thought of intentional go through my mind too
Helicopters fall out the sky a lot.
Guys that has to be the most scariest way to go! Imagine knowing this going down and see just how foggy it was. You can barely see the helicopter.
Flying 1400 in heavy urban area puts a varity of things in your path.
Birds, Wires, Towers, Drones just to name a few. To be honest this was suicide from the start. Million dollar aircraft has more than enough instruments to guide a pilot.
Looks like we've got a licensed pilot over here.
Yet no helicopter terrain awareness and warning system. Thanks, FAA!! The NTSB has been pushing for HTAWS and black boxes on helios for over a decade now. The FAA is really the tombstone agency. They let the bodies pile up before they do anything.
Shut. The. Fuck. Up.

@@gt362gamer They are not required by the FAA to have them even after decades of fatal crashes. Most rescue and emergency helicopters use them. This situation is so terribly sad.
