    Whenever I watch ISS tours it always surprises me just how much *stuff* there is everywhere, everywhere you look there's a ton of equipment fixed to the walls. It even looks a mess sometimes. Sci-fi films like '2001' definitely got that wrong with their clean, uncluttered empty interiors.

    • @courtneypitcher

      2001 is depicting the future though, this here is like the black and white old fashioned days of space exploration. But they never tell you what they're doing up there, she says 4 months but doing what apart from sleeping, eating, shitting and pissing what is the tax payer paying for these people to actually do? It's never explained.

      Keep in mind, 2001 posits a future we aren't in, we're just now seeing the beginnings of what 2001's world had, nobody has built a von Braun wheel equipped space station. While it should definitely work once one is built, it's going to take a lot of launches even on the largest modern platforms like Starship to put one into orbit, if there's even the political will to get it done.
      Space travel may start to look more like 2001 once space stations begin to have some form of artificial gravity. Until then, though, it just makes more sense to slap things where ever they can go, space is very limited in the ISS, unlike Space Station 5 which we see in 2001, which is a much larger construction.
      I have no doubts we'll see things become less cluttered as space becomes better traveled and more inhabited, and as it becomes more commercialized (most wealthy space tourists aren't going to want to stay on a cramped, cluttered station like the ISS), but we're not likely to see that until a proper, larger scale successor to the ISS begins construction.
      @courtneypitcher
      I suspect both visions will be true in some way, Kubrick and Clarke's will be true of commercial space, Tarkovsky's will be true of scientific, government-let endeavors. One clean and uncluttered for the tourists, one packed dense with scientific equipment for scientists and researchers.

      I'm sure they do. They don't work all waking hours.
      It would just be a matter of finding someplace to float since the station is pretty crowded and lacking in open spaces without stuff on the walls.
      Or I guess you could learn to just be aware of what's around you and gently press off when you get close... Cause it's impossible to stay still in low /zero g.
      Your breathing would even move you around a bit and you'd eventually end up on a wall.

    How do people not go crazy at the thought of up and down not existing in space??

    • @rogerpenna
      @rogerpenna 9 лет назад +10

      TOBI OBITO well, up and down DO exist in space. It does not exist in microgravity/freefall.
      But you can be in space and have gravity... like by spinning a wheel and being inside it... or by accelerating a spaceship... of course, we do not have tech to accelerate a spaceship at 1g for long periods of time. Chemical Rockets can achieve several Gs but they burn all their propellant in like only 3 minutes.
      Also, suppose that you build a really tall tower whose top brushes the ISS orbit. If you stand on the top of that tower, despite being in space AND in the same height as the ISS, you would feel almost the same gravity push as if you were on Earth's surface.

      The space station can't go further into space, because it wasn't designed for that. It doesn't have the right kind of shielding, or engines.
