Defense team delivers closing arguments in penalty trial for Parkland school shooter Nikolas Cruz

- The lead prosecutor of Florida school shooter Nikolas Cruz made his final push Tuesday to persuade jurors to sentence him to death, telling them during his closing argument that the 2018 attack that killed 17 people was cold, calculated and meticulously planned and deserving of execution.
Mike Satz said Cruz “was hunting his victims” as he stalked a three-story classroom building at Parkland's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School for seven minutes, firing into some victims at close range and returning to some wounded victims as they lay helpless “to finish them off."
He pointed to Cruz's internet writings and videos, where he talked about his murderous desires such as when he wrote, “No mercy, no questions, double tap. I am going to kill a ... ton of people and children.”
“It is said that what one writes and says is a window into their soul,” Satz said as the three-month trial neared its conclusion. The killings, he said, “were unrelentlessly heinous, atrocious and cruel.”
Cruz, 24, pleaded guilty a year ago to murdering 14 students and three staff members and wounding 17 others on Feb. 14, 2018. Cruz said he chose Valentine’s Day to make it impossible for Stoneman Douglas students to celebrate the holiday ever again.

I have been in the medical field for twenty years. I have met people with fetal alcohol syndrome. they never killed anyone.
Facts !!
Exactly!!
Doesn't happen very often at the best of times.
That’s a not a good argument. Some people’s bodies respond favorably to certain things, ie medications, other people have fatal allergic reactions. Everyone is affected so differently by numerous things.
Her saying that a 4500 square feet home ; you can tell she was trying to give him a good life and even his sister would have love to grow there; his sister suffered living under the roof of her biological mother. Now she is talking about innocent victims and families but throughout the trial she and the defense team disrespected these families. I don’t believe in death penalty but what has been proved is that he’s a walking evil entity and she is trying to convince one juror to vote for life. I would have decided to death penalty. He was faking mental illness.
Melisa mcneill is a excellent lawyer. She is doing everything in her power for Nikolas cruz.
💯💯
Not saying she isn't we are disputing what she is defending because there's no excuse for his actions FAS or none there's no excuse for his actions
I agree. It's very hard for people not to be emotional about this but she's doing her best and IMO, doing "the right thing" as she says.
If you’re moved by this defense plea in any way remember he tortured animals as well. So do it for Spot 🐶.
So ignorant
This woman needs to open her own law firm
He sure knows when to look remorseful. Someone who is described as being so brain damaged is capable of playing with the emotions of others.
I think he looks annoyed with his attorney 🤣
He seems like he's looking at the red head attorney every time his attorney moves. Lol
He’s working it as best as he can he doesn’t wanna fry he figures he can just live the rest of his life for what he did and everybody pays for his little free pass I’d like to see him shit his pants in the electric chair
He doesn't like being talked about that's for sure. Well he shouldn't have committed any crime and acted like he was mentally ill.
Florida authorities dropped the ball on this one. They should be held accountable too.
So did the FBI. They got multiple calls about Cruz, including direct knowledge of his guns, violent instability and his desire to shoot up a school too..
💯
No, give him life . Bubba in cell 636 will do the stares work .
Death penalty takes 18 years on average to execute
Why they did not put the death penalty (Firing Squad) for Nikolas Cruz
Having a bad start in life is not an excuse to shoot 34 innocent people, murdering 17 of them… like I understand that’s the only thing they could use to defend him but it just sounds so silly considering what he did. He had 33 chances to have second thoughts on the horrible crime he was committing but still chose to proceed with no remorse what so ever. He deserves nothing.
That’s not true. He deserves the death penalty. That’s something
No one is exusing anything he did.
They are trying to justify it by claiming he couldn’t help it based on what his mother did when he was in the womb. It’s a lame defense
💯 facts
atleast he is now famous hahaha lol
I would sleep like a baby after voting for death if I was a juror here.
Read it as weep!
Me too! I would not lose a minute of sleep. Lol
Knowing you did an act to make your society better. Removing a stain.
Good for you, tough guy.
@@Mark-Smeaton not about being tough… not like being a juror means you have to be a badass, just need to do the right thing.
Very dramatic and condescending. So far, the defense looks like a bunch of liars to me, pushing FAS when two experts said otherwise.
Did I hear the judge name a juror when she asked about knitting needles?
Yes..I heard it too
Did she say the person's full name? I missed that.
@@admin1815 I thought I heard her say Miss ‘the name’
"There is no time in our life when we are more vulnerable to the will and the whim of another human being then when we are growing and developing in the whomb or our mother".... 😐
EXCEPT WHEN WE ARE CHILDREN SITTING IN A GUN FREE CLASSROOM AND SOMEONE COMES IN AND TAKES OUR LIFE WITH A GUN! But, poor Nick, his mom was possibly on crack 19 years ago!
What an insult to the parents.
(I fixed my comment and made it PG for your mass murder trial live feed lol)
Get the story correct before making comments on broken people. Words can hurt and break some people.
Personally I started to get really tired of hearing about Nikolas Cruz upbringing etc fair enough he had it rough etc but still didn't give him any right to do what he done no matter what problems he had growing up he still knew right from wrong and tha state of Florida was bang on with their opening and closing arguments
No one's saying he had the right to do anything he did. They are saying to choose life in prison over an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.
@@wendylittle2041 I understand what your saying I wouldn't want to be tha jurors situation even though I know what he's done
@@wendylittle2041 he doesn't deserve life eye for an eve. He took lives why should he get to continue on with evil and hate in his heart . He wants death give it to him so taxpayers and others don't have to keep him up for many many years. No excuse for his behavior or actions none what so ever. He had and still shows no remorse for the lives he has taken.
Absolutely ridiculous for her to continue. None of this matters as to him murdering 17 individuals. He pled guilty. What is she so passionately arguing for? He's guilty. Death or LWOP...either way, justice will never be served.
Our prisons would be 99% empty if we used the childhood of each prisoner in there as a reason they committed a crime. There is no excuse.
Women judges smh
She just wants to piss the judge off and get her time to speak what she wants for once in this trial. 😄
I agree with you on every word . 💯
No excuse that's what there is too much of nowadays as it is. All these excuses for behaviors and actions. There is no excuse we didn't do stupid stuff like take lives because we were mad or had issues as kids growing up or in our mama's wombs. I got my behind tore up with a belt lol. That made me stop doing things to get in trouble or be punished for it didn't take but a few times and I have anxiety and depression but i also have common sense not to go be a killer .
Well what do you expect her to do? She's not arguing that he's innocent. She's not arguing that he should be set free, ever. She's passionately arguing for the jury to spare his life and not give him the death penalty . Like it or not, that's her job and that's his right under the law. And the jury happened to agree with her.
Manipulation not even at its finest 🙄
Life in the prison without the parole
@7:20 I would suggested anyone invested in this whole trial to f.o.i.a. the text message that attorney is sending out while speaking to that killer. I'm seeing an inappropriate relationship between these two. Maybe attorney is hybristophiliac???????
It can be too easy to make a decision based only on anger and hate. As i’ve said in previous videos, what Nikolas Cruz did was indefensible, horrendous, and can never be justified. These families will never recover from this. But I strongly believe that simply executing another human being based on anger and vengence will not bring closure for these families. It will continue the trauma that they have already gone through for the last 4 and a half years. And in any case, is it really going to create a better society in the long run? I don’t think so. There is enough hate and vengence, and a lack of empathy in this world as it is. Do we want to create a better, more humane society? Because if not, then i really feel like we are going back to the stone ages. And i say all of this as a former law student, and someone who has gone through a fair bit of bullying myself and other things. Whatever the final outcome, it won’t be easy for the jurers, and it certainly won’t be easy for the families, who will have to live with this for the rest of their lives.
💯
Our system has a set of punishments. They are not there for vengeance but to as an attempt to provide a deterrence for others who might consider the same actions. It is OK for people to believe in this case the system failed to provide justice.
I have never been a big believer in the death penalty because of the errors in administering it. But this case is just so clear. The premeditation.
I suspect he will face true justice in the future.
@@fw8465 thanks for your comment. Even if the death penalty was imposed in this case, and we now know that it wasn’t, it is likely that the outcome would have set the stage for years, if not a decade of appeals, followed by a possible retrial and then an execution.
@@MrStundon1 and that is all that is wrong with our system. For all the handwringing about “drug addiction, fetal syndromes and “mental illness””, think of the resources wasted on this case and
others (Darrell brooks) that could have been utilized to help treat those issues.
We spent hundred of thousands over 15 years trying to fix this unfixable human. Now we will spend hundreds of thousands more to incarcerate him.
Cut your losses. Darrell brooks needs to go away too. Not one more dollar. No more torture for the families he destroyed.
God failed, both of his mothers failed, medicine failed, schools failed and society failed.
And he failed.
Sorry. We’ll try harder on the next one.
@@fw8465 yes the resources wasted and tax payer dollars. Btw, i am not from the US but i’ve spent plenty of time there i worked in Florida as part of my university work placement at a center for people with visual disabilities. Life is not easy for so many people and many people with mental illness do not carry out the horrific acts that cruz carried out. I’ve had a life time of struggles throughout the education system where i live along with my parents and I never turned to violence. And unfortunately we will never know what really drove cruz to carry out the massacre, even though all the evidence was there that he planned it so far in advance, all the videos etc. And it must be so difficult for the families, many of whom may or may not understand the legal system etc.
If this kid with about a million red flags popping up had been subject to red flag laws, he would not have been able to easily get a military rifle and several hundred rounds of ammo. And those 17 people would still be alive today. And these families would be living their lives in blissful obscurity rather than sitting in a courtroom watching him weasel out of a death sentence.

Being a defense attorney isn't easy. She's doing her job, and it's a good thing everyone gets the right to a defense.
Simply put, it’s her job
Lamest excuse to be a horrible human being, not show compassion and break the law by bringing up stuff that’s not in evidence, karma works in special ways

I don’t like her repeated use of the phrase ‘in her belly’. I think ‘in her womb’ would be more effective. Society associates the womb with nurturing and this would portray the difference between what is expected, and what occurred in this case.

Am I the only one getting major Amber Heard vibes from this vial woman?
Linda Cruz adopted two children looking to give them a better life and this woman is trying to put the blame on her. 🤦♂️

I’m w you , defense attorneys. What an awesome closing. You rock.
My heart goes out too all the families that lost their child. I cannot believe that so many people wanted the death penalty for a damaged, broken kid, it worries me so that they believe in an eye for an eye. The school system and the state of Florida is whom you should be taking your anger out with. He warned everyone, he was hurting. No, it wasn’t right, but this boy’s ways of thinking, we’re not brought on, on his own. It out Gov’t you should be upset with. Do the math, when Castro sent all his worms too Florida, this is an end result. Good job for all defense and prosecutors. And, I pray for all the families. If that many people in Florida believe in an eye for an eye, well that’s bad news for our country
You say you can not believe that so many people want the death penalty for a broken mentally ill person, but it is okay to give the death penalty for 17 innocent normal people??
Mental illness is not an excuse for murder. He insight for a premeditated crime.
@@MarietaTruter yes facts ! Hey want to OMG her comments too lol . But anyways I agree. He did bring it on himself. He acted one way I. Front of doctors, another in front of his parents and teachers and students. He was fully capable mentally and emotionally to control himself throughout the court proceedings a person who's truly mentally ill would not have been able to do that. He was smirking and drawing and writing notes to his attorney’s the entire trial
Sad these days people use mental issues as a crutch and that's what is wrong with the world now . There's a medical diagnosis for everyone who acts out. My God if that's the case then why hasn't a million other people in the world acted out as he did when they are angry or just want to feel powerful. It's disgusting that intelligent people such as himself based from watching his conversations with doctors. He isn't stupid nor is he mentally unstable
He is someone who was allowed to get what he wanted his entire life by acting put which when I was a kid only carried the penalty of getting my hind end a good spanking. My parents didn't use the crutch or even think maybe I was bipolar or depressed or had adhd or anything like that just because I had tantrums and he was the one who wanted attention so he acted weird and done weird things to get undesired attention therefore I completely blame him . Jet jet you may need to be checked yourself thinking like that and if you have children I feel sorry for them because the reality of the world is you can't just go around killing people when u want or because your not happy with your life. Those people did nothing to deserve that ..the last doctor that testified even said he played out his mental illness but yet spoke so intelligently about guns and what he did wrong. Now go look up videos of people on RUclips that have been deemed incompetent to stand trial and watch how someone really acts and handles themselves throughout court hearings. Then speak up for Nicholas Cruz
