I Remember Times When Patrick Ewing Schooled Shaq!!!

  • @vgynylrecords
    @vgynylrecords 4 года назад +28

My earliest basketball memories are from the mid 90s onward and the way I remember that era, Ewing was definitely not underappreciated in his time. I feel like the dialogue around him was that he was basically an automatic hall of famer. Clashes with the Bulls were legendary, just ask Spike Lee. However, the winds of time have definitely been less favorable to Ewing than they have to other players you mentioned like Barkley and Malone but it depends where your knowledge of Ewing is coming from. He seems to appeal less and less to younger fans and players, but anyone who watched the game actively while he was playing for the Knicks has applied the eye test and would probably argue that he's a top ten center of all time.
Basically if you remember that John Starks could spontaneously take over a quarter despite not being a consistent All-Star caliber player then you probably also remember how consistently excellent Ewing was.

Especially in Jordan's first 6 years. After that I don't know how they could be so inept at getting Ewing another dominant player. The Knicks ownership and management is still inept! I always said when he was playing that NY did not fully appreciate Patrick Ewing and that they'd regret that - well when Ewing retired they were never able to get another player or have another run like when Ewing was leading in a talent packed era. Ewing played in the time of the bigs - dominant centers and with Jordan! He still excelled!

I don't really think he was underappreciated, maybe he became so by some younger fans but to me he even felt kind of overappreciated, because he played in one of the biggest markets in their last great NBA era and he was a truly positive figure for all we know.
Everybody ranks Pat in the top 50 and often top 30 players of all-time, in the top 10 centers, as one of the greatest Knicks ever, and so on. Everybody who knows a little about basketball knows him as a great college player, the face of the New York Knicks, and a defensive presence to be reckon with.
Then, there is the fact that he didn't win a ring (tough when you have to play Jordan's Bulls and Hakeem's Rockets) and played in a decade where other great centers were around the place, so maybe that's why you could say he is "underappreciated". I think most people value him correctly, he's not in the same discussion as the top 5 centers but comes right after alongside David Robinson, Alonzo Mourning, Dwight Howard (who's arguably more underappreciated)
There is also the "Ewing theory" of 1999 when his team played better as he got hurt, which may be a reason for some people to underrate him.

If you go look at Basketball reference they have gone back and rated players for defensive win shares and defensive rating. Ewing was number 1 in the NBA in both in back to back seasons, Not just amongst centers but all players. He was in the top 3 four other times yet he only got one all-nba defensive team in his career. The weird part was that the Knicks in that era were known for their defense and everybody knew that started with the big fella in the middle.

This is very good context. In particular the part about how he was a great player on good teams but didn't play with anyone else who is all nba, all defense or even a 20+ppg player.

In Ewing's entire career, his teammates combined for 3 All-Star **selections**, two of whom were injury subs (Starks and Oakley in 1964). Ewing haters tried to blame that on Ewing not passing, but when many "disappointing" players left Ewing's Knicks they got **worse** (Xavier McDaniel and Charles Smith). The *one* guy whose game improved from not playing with Ewing was Anthony Mason.

Hes definitely one of the best defenders also a player who should have won DPOY even during his career he did kind of develop a 3pt shot but he gets ranked lower because of that bad series in 94 finals where hakeem destroyed him in that series also missed a open wide game winner aganist the pacers

I would only say Hakeem was slightly better than Ewing, Shaq couldn't be counted on in the 4th quarter of games due to his horrendous free throw shooting and was not a great defender. In their primes Ewing outplayed Shaq. Hakeem and Ewing were close and Robinson was a benefit of the style of play. They are all great, also keep in mind with Ewings offensive stats. Those Knicks team played a slow style and there weren't as many shots. Ewing still averaged 29PPG one season which is amazing. I would rank 1A-Hakeem 1B-Ewing 1C-Shaq 2-Robinson 3-Mourning

Still think the best team the Knicks had with Ewing was 1996-97 when they had Ewing, Oakley, Starks, Allan, Houston, LJ, and other role players. Problem was that team was stupid enough to leave the bench and get involved in a fight with the Knicks which cost them the series eventually.

Very much under appreciated. HOFer, one of the greatest centers of all time, was a massive reason for the Knicks success in the 90s and honestly their defensive minded play style. Ewing was a TOUGH dude... BUT he’s still like the 7th or 8th best center of all time. Kareem, Wilt, Bill Russell, Shaq, Hakeem, Moses Malone, David Robinson, then Ewing. Ultimately the thing that puts him there is the fact he could never get it done in the Finals. He had 2 chances in the Finals and fell short. Again, HOFer but not as good as his contemporaries at the time.

I dislike putting Shaq in the same debate with the likes of Ewing, Olajuwon and, Robinson
because these centers had many years on Shaq. In regards to Ewing vs
Shaq, like video stated, Ewing never had superstar players on his Knicks teams.

I love that you are giving big Pat the love he deserves to say he wasn't just as good as Shaq, Hakeem, Robinson, and the other bigs of his day is just wrong. I'm not sure if you saw him play back in the day but I grew up watching Ewing. Ewing was a monster. One of my personal top 5 centers of all time. His lack of accolades is the only reason why young players don't think he's that great. Had he won an MVP or two or even a championship ring I think the conversation would be very different, but Ewing is the greatest Knick of all time. To add to that remember Pat was the starting Center for the original Dream team.

At last! Someone said it about Ewing and the missing all time great (or even an all star) by his side through the most years of his career. The fact he kept the Knicks at the top (from No1 to No3) of east conference most of these years said it all.I know you cant make history with ''if'' but there are the ''but''....and many players people always rank above him have many ''but'' at their careers (like joined a super team or being lucky enough having another all time great or greats at their team etc...)

Another key point is; Ewing had a jumper from as far as the three point line, therefore his FG% looks inferior than all the great big men. Shaq, Hakeem, Robinson, Zo, etc; didn't need a jumper because they had other guys for that all they had to do was close range shots, that's why their FG% looks better than Patrick's. I just like to mention that because fans like to criticize his FG% making him look like he was not a good shooter compared to the other big men.

Another argument is the downfall of the Knicks since he left. They were never the same anymore, never a contender again. Also, for the east teams in the 90s, while Jordan was playing they would never win a champioship because they wouldnt even go to the finals, so only 94 and 95 seasons are left, while Jordan was on his Baseball attempt. And on these years the Knicks made great playoff runs, making it to the finals in 1994 losing in 7 games to a better Houston team, and losing in the semis in 1995 to the Pacers also in 7 games. He just needed a little more help to get to the finals again and maybe beat Hakeem and the Rockets. Still one of my favorite centers alongside Hakeem, Shaq, Orlando Dwight.
